Title: Talk Sport 2
Post by: kipeye on September 05, 2020, 09:59:27 AM
It's been a while since this was mentioned but have been listening to it for the last year, mostly on my long commute to work. I have now managed to filter out those appalling ads so that I can catch up with the news and now tune in regularly. I have found it reasonably entertaining and nowhere near as bad as you lot said. I have never heard Brazil, so that might be a reason.
Anyway, I wanted to ask-is there a Talk Sport 1? Just curious as I can't find it if there is one and what sports radio would you recommend-my commute is an hour each way minimum and usually 8.00 am and 4 pm. Ta.

There is a TalkSport 1, but is just called TalkSport.  I find it a really hit and miss bunch of shows though with Illiterate Alan Brazil and Ally 'I think I'm really funny' McCoist in.  Shouty Jim White on afterwards, although I do find Simon Jordan talks some sense.  Hawksby and Jacobs are a really non-funny pair of air fillers.  Adrian Durham just winds people up but can be ok on the drive home.

Cheers Newby. That probably explains why I haven't heard Brazil. Not sure why I can't find it on DAB or FM, not that I want to now.

I have a really low bar with stuff like this and can easily put up with listening to rubbish presenters without getting annoyed

but even for me Jim White, Jason Cundy and Andy Goldstein are absolute wankspangles

Wankspangles may become my word of the day.   I couldn't agree more.  There are days when I just can't listen to Brazil or Durham as my tolerance of their winding up is low.  The Moose is also a fuckwit.  They are the Daily Star of the airwaves.  Saturday football coverage is pretty good though and Durham is very good at that.   On a different note, I am pleased that Soccer Saturday has had a cull.

I'd go along with this, and add Simon Jordan and Danny Kelly to my own non-wankspangle list.

Each to his own but I can't stand either of them, or that bloody idiot Moose.

I can't listen to TalkSport any more.

Years ago; I used to like the Sports Breakfast with Parry & Brazil. And then there was a two Mikes show with Parry and Mike Graham, which was on through the night - that was funny. The rest is Aids for your ears.

I reckon Laura Woods is ok on the breakfast show Monday to Wednesday, Brazil now only does Thursday and Friday. I agree about The Moose, absolutely useless.

Danny Kelly was the other one I was trying to recall, seems a decent guy. Too good for that shit.

I wouldn't admit to polite society that I'd ever listened to TalkSport, but to you lot, I think Hawksbee and Jacobs are excellent and Max Rushden and Barry Glendenning's Sunday morning show is also really good. Danny Kelly is also a great broadcaster.  The rest of it is total shit, however.

I have to filter my listening depending who’s on. Hawkesbee and Jacobs are OK if only to listen to Andy Jacobs rants after Chelsea fail to do anything other than win every game comprehensively. I really like Max Rushden’s self deprecating style and him and Barry Glendenning are very good, although now teamed up also with Charlie Baker on Saturday who’s a funny bloke.
Danny Kelly is excellent especially as they sometimes pair him up with any old co presenter. Durham is very good at what he does, throws out the bait and waits for the bites. Simon Jordan is very good especially when talking through football finance issues.
The list of awful contributors is so long though. Abrahams mumbling “my best mate” routine, Darren Gough being the font of all knowledge, Brazil’s comedy freebee pisshead act. Danny Murphy, he’s angry isn’t he? Bob Mills from Win, lose or draw. Eh, have I missed something?
Two stand out for me though for different reasons. One being Andy Goldstein. If anyone is more in love with himself and his opinions I don’t think I’ve heard them, totally dismissing and condescending to anyone who disagrees with him. The other is Jim White, the ‘face’ of transfer deadline day and all round sycophantic friend of the footballing world. I turned on this week and heard “let’s hear a clip of Andros Townsend and let me say do you know what I have so I’ve been so impressed with him since he joined us here on Talksport his contributions have been magnificent”. It must take him an age every day lubing himself up the amount of backsides he goes up.
Natalie Sawyer, she’s awful too.

Talksport.  Radio for people who think BBC 5 Live is too high-brow.  And considering how that station's output has deteriorated in recent times the bar isn't set particularly high.

Football Weekly is a staple for me, as is the Football Ramble (originally because my mate is part of it, but I think it's just genuinely good too).

Hawksbee & Jacobs are excellent broadcasters. They can do both the serious stuff and the humorous stuff equally well. They are a very good combination. Hawksbee is the upbeat one and Jacobs is the world weary one.
I quite like 'The Two Mikes'. Mike Parry is actually a very intelligent and knowledegable journalist but most of the time he prefers to be controversial just for the sake of it or he plays the buffoon.

Some of the best memories I have of Talksport was when Colin Murray and Keith Gillespie went out to Euro 2016 to cover Northern Ireland. They were basically broadcasting whilst being pissed for the entire time they were out there.

As mentioned above Rushden and Glendenning are a good listen and Danny Kelly is always ecellent.

Living in Thailand i listen to Talk sport often as keeps me upto date whats happening in the UK,
Before i did enjoy Alan Brazil in the morning ( Midday Here ) but changed to Thursday and Friday, The Monday to Wednesday Laura Woods is terrible and Mccoist laugh at his own jokes for 10 minutes which not funny at all.
Jim 10 - 1 believes his own hype but only listen when Simon Jordan is in as like his Knowledge whats goes on behind the club.
H and J i do like, ( i'm usually driving home this time) clips of the week sometime really funny.
Drive time winds me up and usually switched off by then as can't stand him with Gough sorry forget his name. Think his a peterborough an.
In the Morning guest Rupert Bell  is good as speaks sense about the Villa.

When I was pretty ill a few years back I listened to Talksport whilst I was in hospital. When I got back home I was confined to bed and on a lot of medication which caused me to drift in and out of sleep. I found it hard to concentrate on TV for long so being able to put Talksport on at any hour of the day or night (even if a lot of the time I fell asleep) was what kept me sane. I even started to enjoy the quaint discussions on 'Fisherman's Blues' even though I have no knowledge of or interest in fishing. I am pretty sure the guy Nigel who does it knows each and every one of his callers personally.

It's owned by Wireless Group, which was bought by News UK. It's why Collymore was let go (having been a big supporter of the Justice for the 96 campaign, and therefore critical of The S*n) and why Colin Murray resigned (for similar reasons).

Ken Early has a brain but he can be insufferable. I also cringe how they discuss English clubs most of the time yet are always dismissive towards the England national team because "we're all Oirish here". Hardly a novel trope in Irish media but it's reductive and tiresome. Then they'll have a respected English guest journo on or have an exclusive interview woth Danny Rose and be as nice as pie to him.

On the main station Darren Bent has a Sunday show
5-8pm
Darren Bent's Boot Room

'You can Join Darren Bent for the ultimate weekend review
Where he will also discuss the best boots on the market and the flair of his own wardrobe which boasts over 10,000 shoes '

Also another ex Premier league player, Jamie O’Hara, has a show as presenter for GameDay Countdown on Friday nights 7 onto 10pm

Yes to Bent
No to O'Hara

Other way round.

Bent is a mundane yes man, O’Hare has an abundance of more charisma.

I agree Early can drone on a bit and his review of the weekend's PL is often my least favourite bit of it. I generally prefer the audio clips and the coverage of other sports that I wouldn't necessarily listen to a dedicated podcast on.

As for your second point it doesn't bother me as much and I'm probably guilty of the same thing at times. :)

Did anybody listen to talksport whilst there was no sport going on?  I was curious as to what they did to fill time. Television can throw on repeats or clip shows. Did talksport air best of Andy Jacobs retrospectives or something?

Obviously I was never curious enough to put the radio on and find out.

Years back, I worked on a job with a chap who'd done a load of work on Sralex's country pile. He's apparently also a man with a penchant for footwear, and from the way my contractor acquaintance told it, his shoe collection had something akin to its own house. During remodelling work there was a slight fuck up in communication and somebody knocked through a wall straight into said collection. The former Aberdeen and St. Mirren manager was allegedly really, really, really not happy about this.
