Have sacked Le Tissier, Thompson and Nicholas as they want a more diverse panel. Merse keeps his job as the recovering alcoholic diversity pundit.
-
Perfect timing. Not about the OP, but I was wondering where I could mention that against the dark blue background, Jim White is almost a floating head right now.
-
Interesting, could mean a job for Steve Sidwell or Dave Kitson.
-
Le Tissier is pro VAR so he can get gone, Thompson was so biased he had to be removed from Liverpool games and I've never forgiven Nicholas for that down on one knee celebration at Villa Park. No loss.
The best thing about this is the reaction from the dimwits who are already fuming about Rule Britannia. Arf.
-
None of them are journalists so not too fussed.
-
A freshen up of that panel was due - having 4 blokes half of which haven’t played this century laughing at same jokes week in week out has gone stale.

I didn't have a problem with Le Tissier, Nicholas and Merson but I always thought Thompson was a crap pundit.
-
Sue Smith & Clinton Morrison will take 2 of the spots so just one left up for grabs....
Sky Sports is shit now anyway so no big deal!

Personally I thought Nicholas was the weak link, he just spouted off what he read in the mornings paper
-
Nicholas was crap, annoyed me that he couldn't pronounce "Hull" and he was always just desperate for goals and seemed delighted when the favourites were winning.
-
Didn't mind Le Tiss, the other two were shite in my opinion.
-
Get our Gabby in. He hits many diversity targets.
-
Clinton Morrison I find very irritating. Hope he doesn't become a regular. Sue Smith I think is very good.
-
Hendrie or Gabby to fill a spot.
Big Time Charlie and Big Nose good riddance, Le Tiss I’m ambivalent about.
-
Get our Gabby in. He hits many diversity targets.
About the only targets he's hit in the last ten years.
-
To be fair, he exceeded his target weight...
-
Am I allowed to admit that I quite like Clinton Morrison?!
-
Am I allowed to admit that I quite like Clinton Morrison?!
I'm glad you said it first as I do too.
-
Am I allowed to admit that I quite like Clinton Morrison?!
Me too, I actually like Micah too - sometimes some of them get too deadly serious about a game so mixing a bit of fun with proper punditry works.
I actually think Collymore changed that role, absolutely nothing to do with race / diversity or anything but when he started on c5 UEFA Cup coverage you could tell he put the hours in doing his research before games & you can see the same now in likes of Neville, Rosenior even dare I say it Savage.....
-
Goooal at Goodison, what's happening Merse?
"oooh, it's (makes 3 attempts unsuccessful attempts to pronounce the players name).....he's beaten the defender, it's in the area...the keeper...oh look at that.... he's had a shot....looks like it's.....I don't know what the defender was thinking......and it's a goal Jeff"
-
When are they going to get rid of Martin Tyler, should have been pensioned off a long time ago.
-
Martin's not the worst. https://www.skysports.com/football/news/12799/11962220/aston-villas-villa-park-martin-tylers-guide-to-the-ground
-
Given the amount of kids he’s got, he seems to be on point with another target.
-
if they had Gabby as a pundit must would need the subtitles on to understand what he was saying.

Apparently following the sackings, Jeff Stelling is now considering quitting as presenter, now that would be bad news.
-
They’ve sacked Scott Minto now which I think is a shocking decision as I thought he was a great presenter.

He phoned them to tell them he was leaving, but after waiting on the phone for about and hour they gave him free multiroom, and Sky Cinema and Sports half price for a year and he's decided to stay.
-
That is very funny.

I like Clinton Morrison's enthusiasm. Rosenior is more laid back and considered but he tends to talk a lot of sense. They both have different styles but I like both of them.

Totally agree about Rosenior, he does talk a lot of sense, mainly because he isn’t lazy and puts the work in getting the accurate background information

Agree I think he is excellent, shame they could not of given Prutton the P45, although no doubt Caroline Barker who started to do the odd Sky EFL game will be the lead presenter now

Totally agree - I’ve heard Morrison abit on Talkshite and whilst he talks about his time within the great unwashed, whenever we are
Mentioned he never takes a cheap dig and is always objective.

I've only heard Morrison on 5 Live and find him irritating tbh. Rosenior is a very good pundit but probably not suited to Soccer Saturday. Someone described Micah Richards as football's version of Kris Akabusi which tickled me as did this. https://twitter.com/NUFC_LEW/status/1298146210579128321

Minto knew his stuff when it came to Spanish football. As does Terry Gibson.

I never liked Sky's coverage, you could practically smell the aged testosterone. Idiot as he may be, I like Merson. That's about it.

That's his appeal to be fair, he doesn't carry the ego of the others. I met him once, he was great, slightly indifferent when introduced until I mentioned I was at Everton when he scored that ridiculous last minute winner, and then he suddenly lit up and we had a good blather for about 10 mins.

I was there too, and there weren't many of us. None of this selling out away allocations then! Truly terrible game which made you wonder why you bother going. Then one moment of magic made it all worthwhile.
-
Apart from Mersons goal right at the end, the only other thing I remember was Gascoigne pulling a muscle taking a free kick and going off injured. think he slipped and fell on his arse.
-
Was sooo cold that day - the goal & Xaviers hair ‘who let the sheep out’ were the only memories I have
-
Today's Soccer Saturday panel is Paul Merson, Tim Sherwood, Clinton Morrison and Tony Pulis, come back Le Tissier, Thompson and Nicholas all is forgiven.
-
I quite liked Sherwood today. He describes the action very well. There I’ve said it.
-
Yeah, I thought Sherwood was decent.
Regarding Sky presenters, I quite like Morrison I have to say. Thought Higginbotham was very knowledgeable last night and whoever it was alongside him was good as well.
Martin Tyler seems past it now. Annoyed me with his Leeds love in against Liverpool as well.
But no one beats the number one Villa fan - Gary Neville!
-

Whether or not you rate Sherwood as a manager he can certainly talk a good game.
-
If I was Jeff Stelling I'd knock it on the head & just leave Sky to it! It was the go to show for years if Villa weren't playing but its just going to be so predictable & boring now!
No great loss to be fair!

We were talking about this in the pub and were pretty much in agreement that you watch the programme to find out the scores, the pundits are relatively inconsequential.
A big fuss about nothing.

True, but I guess we all have our favourites. I like Lawrenson, Crooks, Keown - all the bad ones that nobody else seems to like. I find them much more entertaining.

Garth Crooks doesn't half bang on. He was interviewing someone once and I reckon he should have contacted the Guinness Book Of Records because I am convinced he asked the longest question ever asked.

Yep, I love stuff like that. I'm also a big fan of him interrupting and shouting over people.

Taking this on from the other thread about Richard Keys and him digging at Jeff, I find out it a whole lot better watching it when he is presenting it. Yes, the stats men make him seem really knowledgeable but you also need a naturalness and the silly jokes and banter is all him. No one else comes close.
-
One of my biggest regrets is that many years ago I was on holiday in a row of 3 houses on a remote property in Normandy. Jeff, his wife and eldest son
arrived next door. Instead of spending my evenings drinking wine & chatting to him I was in bed with pneumonia.

He's brilliant but as good as he is I still watch when the "Happy Shopper Stelling" is on midweek if I want to find out how Villa are doing.
-
They're wheeling out Gabby again to talk about us/ Grealish.
Fair play, he can't be as daft as he looks and sounds, getting all these high paying gigs.
Wonder what the thought process at Sky is in getting him on.
"Ex Villa. He'll do."
-
Deary me, they're grasping for content aren't they?
Are they going to go back to offering John McGinn/James Maddison/Harry Kane to Man United instead?

I read a couple of great interviews with him. Believe it or not but he does most of his stats research himself on a Wednesday and Thursday at a services in Winchester close to where he lives!
I loved these two excerpts from the recent interview.
“But I always have an eye for little curiosities. Swindon have just signed three players called Smith: Tyler Smith, Jonny Smith, somebody else Smith. They’ve already got Sam Smith on their books. Stirling Albion once had four players called Smith. Chris Smith, Gordon Smith, Darren Smith and Darren L Smith. When they were relegated, I said: ‘Heaven knows they’re miserable now.’”
But you have to do it. Think of Jelleyman [in one of Stelling’s most memorable moments on Soccer Saturday he said, ‘Gareth Jelleyman has been sent off. Let’s hope he hasn’t thrown a wobbly!’] My research told that me Jelleyman had never been sent off. That kind of stat excites me. Then, on the day he finally got a red card I delivered the line.

About that dinner party.....I've just checked my diary and it appears I've another social engagement that night. Sorry!

I haven't got much time for Lawrenson or Crooks but despite being a miserable git Keown is a good pundit. I actually think the fact he is a misery guts is part of what makes him a good pundit.

He was on Talksport this week comparing Jack Grealish to Iniesta to much wailing on social media. Brilliant stuff, when he's playing he has them on strings and when someone talks about him it's the same. Piss funny.

I suspect the media use Gabby as he is always available. Although now the Jack stuff has died down Gabby might not be getting so many phone calls from Talksport and SKY.

Gabby talking about Jack on Talksport:
"It's the movement of the body, he's gone. A little bit of acceleration with the ball and he's gone. I know it's a big statement but he reminds of a bit of Iniesta in his prime, skipping past you. That's Jack for you."
To which O'Hara tweeted:
"Someone stop this man, Gabby you need a temperature check pal."
Gabby's reply:
"Maybe if you had played for England against Iniesta and longer in the Prem you would understand"

-
That is excellent. I didn't think Gabby had it in him to be so witty.
-
I have enjoyed Gabby on the radio and they are inviting him on lots of shows.
-
Gabby’s been a breath of fresh air, even past the strong Erdington accent he has proven to be far more articulate and insightful than even his most arduous detractors.

The strong Erdington accent is glorious to hear on national radio, there needs to be more of it. Definitely.

Probably not as strong nowadays, but it has been on American TV for several years and with a lot more regularity then anything on British produced broadcasting.

Yep. I know that accent all too well seeing Gabby and I have that in common.
He's actually doing quite well. I thought he'd embarrass himself but he's made some decent points and naturally very defensive of the club and our key players and challenges the often lazy media perception of us.

Born on York Rd me, always Erdington no matter where I live. Good to see our man representing. Wilton Market Forever.

I was born in Aston, but moved I think at 2 to Erdington. Lived just off Kingsbury Rd, not far from Rookery Park. Went to Birches Green. I remember going to Wilton Market with my mum. Erdington high street last time I went is such a dump now. Sad to see. Really went downhill after Littlewood’s and Woolworth’s all closed down replaced by low cost stores.

It is yes, very sad. Before starting school I would have been up there nearly every day with my Mom and Nan, with an iced bun from Wimbush as a reward for keeping schtum. I'd pop up there now and again as it's the nearest branch of Game, but it's heads down and don't make eye contact till you get in the shop, it's like the valley of the damned.
-
They really had their z list of celebrities out last night including Jamie Mackie and Danny Cowley who couldn’t even be bothered to describe Newcastle’s first goal.
-
Every time you turn on sky sports all they talk about is sancho signing for Utd, they have been on about this since July, they even now have a reporter in Dortmund
I hope Dortmund don’t sell him!!!

Is he any good ? 🤔

There isn't much solid information coming from the reporter in Dortmund. I think the guy they have covering the story is Ed Winchester off of 'The Fast Show'.
-
This is Sky all over. Dortmund set a deadline of 10th August for the deal to be done and then said he isn't going anywhere. They have somehow kept this shite going for another 7 weeks. Apparently they still offered £30m less than they want this week. He had a respiratory infection and didn't travel to wherever they were playing this week and Sky blew it up out of all proportion.
-
Sky were very fair with their presenters for last nights Brighton v Man U match. With Brighton being the home team one would expect there to be someone who knows the club, can give insites etc. but no we have Andy (sorry) Andrew Cole and Fletcher doing the match analysis. Biased or what?
-
Sky Sports has been poor for at least the last couple of years. Like everything else it just seems to have been dumbed down for a brain dead society.
Sign of the times I suppose!

They could’ve at least got Michael Robinson who played for both.
Edit no they couldn’t. He died in April!
Edit. Oh and he didn’t play for Manure. Apart from that my post is valid.

It's even worse when they have very obviously biased ex-players co-commentating, eg Carragher on Liverpool matches.
-
I think Carragher and Neville are both biased when it comes to us. They gush over us. I mean as well they should, but still.

They love "inoffensive" big teams like us who bend over regularly to take it from their teams though. Alex Ferguson used to be the same. I look forward it to changing when we've kicked them all over the park and humped them 3-0.
-
The ones that don’t like us across the media are:
Savage obviously
Murphy no idea why
Jenas well he blames us for tripping over a sprinkler.
Mills again no idea why
Quinn but thankfully he’s been put out to grass
I think the others kind of like us.

Murphy is a right misery guts. He will speak fondly of his time at Liverpool and Fulham but it still doesn't stop him moaning about both clubs when he sees fit. I have heard Murphy say something positive about Villa as a club and Villa Park as a top ground but I have also heard him suggest we have underachieved over the years.

Difficult to disagree with Danny there
