Title: Aston Villa 0 v Crystal Palace Pre Match Thread.
Post by: kippaxvilla2 on July 11, 2020, 11:35:51 AM
Fwiw.  0-0 bore draw.  They haven’t scored three in a game all season long but don’t give much away.  We don’t score.  Or a 0-1 Ayew:Benteke link up.

We will start okay. Palace/Everton/Arsenal/West Ham will realise that we have no goal threat and grow in confidence.

They will take the lead due to a refereeing controversy/jammy deflection/piece of shit defending and that'll be that. The only question being if they settle for one-nil or go on to score two or three more.

Sorry, thought I would do all my remaining pre-match predictions in one thread to save time.

We have the most fouled player in the league. What would every other team do? Stick him up front and get him in the penalty box as much as possible.

                Reina

Guilbert Mings Hause Taylor

McGinn Nakamba Luiz Hourihan

          Davis Grealish

2-0 to the villa. Two penalties scored out of 5 given.  :)

I reckon this will be one of the almighty shocks of English football. We'll win 1-0.

It will be right up there alongside Woking winning at the Hawthorns.

Start McGinn and I swear to God I'll swing for both him and Smith. The rest of our lot will be still bollock-tired and feeling sorry for themselves after Thursday night, never mind the unfit and overweight Scottish chap.

1-3 Palace will pick us off as we tire in the last twenty minutes, Terry will stand there thinking he is still so right in how Villa teams knacker themselves out. The Beast and Ayew both on the score sheet just to rub salt.

And as for those inspirational pre-game huddles that he instigates.... Blinding!

Yep.  With that in mind, we've got to at least try and get some creativity in the team.  Push Grealish back out wide, play Nakamba with Luiz and give Hourihane a free role in front of them.  Not CH's biggest fan at all, but at least he has a goal in him.

Why not! Despite hourihane being very limited at this level and lacking pace, I do think he’s one of the ones who gives a shit. He looked seething when he came on against Man Utd and was throwing the f bomb round at a few of them. Also ran round like a lunatic...to little effect, but I’d rather that than passively letting the game drift away.
I felt really deflated when Watford got their winner earlier, but fuck it. It’s absolutely clear now, win or bust, no fucking around. We somehow scrape a win, we’re within 4 points of Watford and West Ham, preferably Watford lose to West Ham midweek and we scrape a draw at Everton, we’re 3 points behind with arsenal at home and on the beach West Ham away whilst Watford have Man City home and arsenal away. Absolutely delusional I know, we’ll know by 4.30 tomorrow.
I just home Smith tries just anything different.

This all day. it would be the best appointment in a long time, if we could get him.

There is a lot of B.S about 'style' and 'Philosophy' in today's game. Let's just start with the basics? We have been in decline for a long time and a soft touch for a long time. We need to run before we can walk. We need a change of mentality, we need work-rate, we need to have more backbone. Once we have established those basics we can then look at things like style.

'The Villa engine', 'laying traps'...I don't want any more bullshit when it isn't producing results.

I was as down as anyone after the results yesterday and I don’t think we will get out of it, but the amount of people throwing in the towel completely is ridiculous. We need to change tactics, maybe go 3 at the back again and get more width from the fullbacks if Guilbert and Targett are fit, but if we get a win today we will have a chance to get back within striking distance of Watford or West Ham come Thursday, possibly even both if their game is a draw. I actually think we will get the win today, then it’s a long shot but we aren’t down yet.

My main reasoning behind this is coming out of the Derby 4-0 game last season. I remember thinking it was a great performance, but had come a few games too late and we had no chance of catching enough teams to make the playoffs. It’s a lot later now, but it won’t take a massive swing for us to still have a chance of staying up on the last day - we just have to win our games, hopefully that focuses the players minds.

I don't think 3 wins will be enough - We need all 4!

I can see West Ham/Watford drawing, and Watford beating Man City (they beat Liverpool convincingly remember, and Man City will have one eye on the return of the Champions League by that point). West Ham/Watford could both realistically finish on 38pts (assuming West Ham beat us), leaving us 11 points behind. We need all 4 wins, and hope that they don't put similar runs together.

Based on our current form, I think it's pie in the sky stuff. We won't gain another point all season.

You don't even get the 'laying traps' bullshit from Smith any more, these days it's more "it's highly unlikely we'd get anything from the Liverpool or Man U games".

Odd that we were laying traps when we looked more like we were laying cables

It's a big risk though.... The form they've got themselves in, and with Pearson in charge, is it too unrealistic to expect Watford to pick up points against either Man City (H) or Arsenal (A) if needed?

Sorry to be pedantic, but it's two - Chelsea(H) and Leicester(A).  THey beat Bournemouth (A) prior to that 2-0.  ;)

Anyway, going back to Damo's comment about their CBs being out... .They could play rush goalie and still win comfortably. Not like we're going to be a threat on their goal!

I’d say we’re pretty consistent with our set pieces.

Consistently awful at defending them, and consistently poor at delivering them.

It does, but if you look at the two teams' run-ins, and their likely motivation at the point that they face each other...

Watford will need one more win at that point to probably secure survival, whilst Man City will have just come off the back of the FA Cup semi against Arsenal. Man City's two remaining league games, prior to facing Real Madrid, are Watford and Norwich. I don't think they're going to be going too gung-ho in either of those games with that on the horizon.

Yes, they're still a formidable force even in second gear, but Watford are definitely one of the teams that you wouldn't want to face in that situation imo.

Time and time again when the teams around us have failed to get points, we subsequently proceed to shoot ourselves in the foot.

We are where we are because we have f*cked it up for ourselves and let’s face it  - for the main we have been imposters in this league. Hurts to type this but it’s fact and from day one sitting in the sunshine at Spurs last August -phone in hand - ready to hit the cash out button before they equalised it has been the same time and time and time again. Cyndi Lauper will tell you that, she goes with me to all the matches. She just wanted to have fun but our true colours came shining through. I’ve completely lost track of what it was that I was posting about now so see ya, I’m off.

Which is fine, but you can apply that logic across the board - why would Palace and Everton be any more motivated in our games given neither have anything realistically to play for. You could argue City’s player will be playing for the Champions League final places so will have more motivation.

I know it’s unlikely, but I don’t see the point of looking any further ahead than we need to at the moment. Last season we had to win 10 on the spin to make the playoffs and we did it -  we now must win the next two and see where it leaves us.

As match approaches, there’s always a new found optimism. Unfortunately, usually followed by ffs once the match actually starts. Seems an age since someone has posted scorcioooooooo.
Improbabile, but we could go 4 matches unbeaten, say..win today and v West Ham and draws against Everton and Arsenal, giving us a total of 35. With our goal difference we would need 36 at least and I also think West Ham and Watford will pick up enough points to finish on at least 36, possibly 37.
It’s the hope that kills you so, as a rational person, probably best give up hope so that we are alive to keep following our beloved team in the Championship next season!!
