He has lost the fucking plot.

Thought the rumour was 2 up top. What is the point in trying to keep them at bay.  The only way to play these is aggressively get at them and take it to them.

Be passive and they will destroy us with ease

You know the answer, don't you John.

We can't be playing it from the back, it goes to Mings and gets the big gun. We keep our shape; seen it all before.

You can get 9/1 against us winning. Pile on if you are an optimist.

Manure give no fucks. They're playing a 4-2-3-1 which is basically a 4-2-4.

I wonder how many headers Hause is going to head nowhere near the goal tonight.🤔

We've done passive, it doesn't work. We've done keeping our shape and keeping it tight, in the end the other team scores.

What we haven't tried is taking the game to the opposition, getting in their faces. It may not work and against this Man Utd team, in the form they are in, it probably wouldn't work but by God it would feel positive, energising.

Watch Trezeguet toil like a lost child for 65 minutes before being replaced.....
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Manchester United Match Thread
Post by: chrisw1 on July 09, 2020, 07:43:42 PM
I'm not sure what people were expecting, it's not as if we've got a glut of quality available.  Two up top was a disaster against Wolves.  Trez gets a run as he's persisting with Grealish in the middle, which is what everybody wanted.  Personally I'd have probably played Elmo right and Ghazi left, but frankly it's just shuffling an awful deck.

There's no way he would just chuck Guilbert straight in ater 4 months off and an injury.

We were reasonable against Liverpool and could easily have nicked a goal if our finishing wasn't so poor.  He's obviously hoping for a similar performance with more luck from set pieces.  Obviously we'll probably lose, but then given Utd's quality that's hardly a surprise.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Manchester United Match Thread
Post by: sickbeggar on July 09, 2020, 07:44:19 PM
Well with that line-up, I can only conclude Smith is worried about ManU not having the money for Grealish if they don't make the Champions league

It can only be that he saw that we held out for 70 mins against 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' and believes that this is the way to go again.
The problem as ever will be, that even if we hold on or even get in front, he won’t know what to fucking do

Stonewall penalty for Spurs earlier. Not given by the ref. Not given by VAR.

Clear mistake for Man Utd pen. Not overturned.

VAR was sold to us on the basis that it would correct mistakes.

VAR refs are disgusting and corrupt. They will not embarrass their mates on the park.

I said early in the season that where you had a senior ref giving a decision, no way would a less experienced ref, just up from the championship, overturn it and it’s been seen time and time again.

The problem this season has been the prolonged meek acceptance of low standards. Low standards of fitness, low standards of coaching, low standards of game management, players repeatedly not delivering, low standards of recruitment.

That second goal was a perfect example. Mings lingering, taking care to cover his bollocks, Greenwood given all the time he wants to shoot, our 74 year old goalkeeper not getting anywhere near it.

Yeah we played well for spells, and yeah, the penalty was never a penalty, but sorry, even taking that into account, it's not good enough and it hardly has been at all this season.

No, we never get anything out of Man United, but the point is, it was the pathetic acceptance of low standards that left us in a desperate situation where we HAVE to get three points.

Just not good enough, and I can not believe Edens and Sawiris have pumped all the money in and then just watched it all get pissed away like that.

If they decide they've had enough, we are properly fucked.

Second was a good finish but to me it highlights the lack of nous we have in games at key times. It's the 49th minute. Don't go over committing and just keep the ball for an extra 30 seconds and go in 1-0 down and still in the game. Instead it's over and I worry now our GD will take a big hit especially if we get more phantom penalties given.

This is very measured and true. Struggling to be measured at present but this is true nevertheless.

It has been a horror show really it has. Recruitment, coaching, fitness, everything about it has just been so poor.

Which is true.
In the sense that any goal changes a game, yes.  What he should  say is 'We started well, got well and truly fucked over by the pen, couldn't handle it and started playing like shit.'  Bet he doesn't though.

He shouldnt be here for the next fucking match.

He should have gone in December.

Hopefully he won't want the job anymore. Looks like it.

Ignoring the complete and utter capitulation thereafter.

Which is actually a fair point but it doesn't mean that a team automatically has to fold at the first piece of adversity.

The lack of character is startling. He needs to explain that.

2015-16 set the bar as high as it possibly gets for an unlikeable team.

But these lot aren't far behind. I can't stand the majority of our players. Slow, inept, weak, cowardly, lacking basic skills...the list goes on.

c***s
Bland.
They mirror the manager.

We have also become the stupid club again. The Mings 'bot being subbed' thing at home to Leicester epitomized it as does the lack of concentration for a lot of the goals we concede. Oh, and having no recognized striker for, what was it, 5 top flight games in January?

I didn't think we would win, in fact I thought we would lose, but the manner of the defeat is unacceptable. I'm not on about the scoreline, that can happen against good sides, but the reaction is so bad, so weak, so poor. We have to win Sunday. There's no hope if something goes against us, we collapse.

And whats worse is the senior players, Mings and Grealish have been the biggest culprits.

well on the plus side, we knew we'd lose this one. On the minus side, Smith shows himself incapable of using a foregone conclusion to his advantage and trying something different. No doubt next game, we'll have Davis up front, with Samatta coming on, or Samatta starting with Davis coming on, or both of them..
