One of the most out of form teams in Europe vs one of the, if not the most in form team in Europe. A team that can't score a goal, versus one that has multiple 20 goal scorers and new teen sensation who now has 9 goals in 8 games or something like that. The good news is they have De Gea. I'll go for 1-0 up with 2 minutes to go and a late goal by Scholes to win it for them after Giggs equalizes. Or maybe they bring on Macheda as their 5th sub

More valiant losing methinks. It's a free hit, might as well go for it.

Do we have to? For the 100th time in our history we're playing them at exactly the wrong time.

Could've done with playing them in January instead of Man. City. We played really well at Old Trafford in November but they were starting likes of Lingard, Periera and Mata back then.

I said before the Liverpool game I thought of the two Man. United were more likely to give us a bigger hiding so I think we'll lose by a three goal margin.

Simply have to go all out for the 3 points v Palace regardless of what happens on Thursday.

In a funny way thought I'd be interested to see how BCD impacts on this fixture. VP is like paranoia central whenever Man. United cross the halfway line if we're a goal up given the history of this fixture in last 20 years so at least that won't filter down to the players this time.

There is a quick turn around to the Palace game on Sunday. Some of our players will be fooked after this. I'd be tempted to rest/drop McGinn so that he's not blowing out of his growing arse on Sunday.

Unfortunately can only see 1 result and it is not us winning - 0-3

Whenever we play Utd I always think of the Graydon cross to a leaping Andy Gray at the far post (for me that was a goal of football beauty)

I just want us to be bold, have a crack and see what happens.  Currently we are going down without really laying a glove on anyone. We have to be more unpredictable, give teams something to think about. If that means 5-3-3 with Barry and Samatta up front with AEG out wide then so be it - just dont be so utterly, mindnumbingly pedestrian FFS.

             Reina

         Hause Mings
Guilbert                  Konsa
               Luis
McGinn                AEG
              Grealish

        Samatta  Barry

Liverpool were on the beach, and still beat us without breaking sweat.  Man U need to win to try and catch Chelsea in 4th, and also stay ahead of Wolves.  In Fernandes, they probably have the most in form player in the Premier League.  Only one way this is ending.

They might be on form and scoring freely but Bournemouth managed to score twice against them the other day meaning there is a definite fragility at the back that we can aim to exploit.  I don't want to see a repeat of the Chelsea game - let's just go for it.  Get Louie Barry involved in the squad from now onwards, too.

God I hated that game. Baffled why we gave them the whole of the lower Witton that night instead of the usual Upper North for FA cup games as we do now. Was just an open invitation for them to do their pitch invasion after the thirs goal (which the press just ignored). Think that really started our near 20 year inferiority complex against them at VP.

Think we also drew them 4 times in the 3rd round of the FA cup in just 6 seasons. Leicester probably had shorter odds when they won the league.

Giving them effectively home advantage that day by having supporters around 50% of our pitch perimeter has got to be one of the lowest points in supporting our great club, something I’ve always wanted to ask Steve Stride as he always seemed to have his finger on the pulse , just what were you thinking?

Such is the hoodoo they have over us in this fixture, they could pick 11 random fans to start, and still somehow end up winning.

Lawro on the Beeb website is also going for an easy ManU win, but he actually makes some good points: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/53308609

Quote
Liverpool could do that because, since football restarted amid the coronavirus pandemic, teams are allowed to use five subs now, instead of three.

I don't think there was any need to make a change to the laws of the game there whatsoever, and what it does is give all the top teams with more depth in their squad an extra chance to make that quality count.

It is a factor in why the bottom four have picked up so few points since the restart, and it is another problem for Villa in this game too.

After Watford’s result tonight, it does now kind of feel like the end is nigh, even with their tough final few games. Lose this as I think we will and it piles so much pressure on the palace game, especially if Watford are 7 points ahead by then which they could be.

Or somehow the miracle performance we’ve all been waiting for, strong and disciplined at the back, tenacious in midfield and creative up top. It ain’t gonna happen but feck it 2-1 villa, with a late goal from McGinn.

Post by: Gareth on July 07, 2020, 09:32:20 PM
We now have to produce the freak result vs United that Watford did vs Liverpool - we just to need to achieve it without a home support, in a game where managers get to give 4 team talks & in a game where 5 subs make it almost inevitable that the stronger squad prevails in the final 20 minutes when you reduce the variables.

Never thought there would be anything this season that would be worse than the awful implementation of VAR but Project Restart is utter garbage.  Changing rules mid season to purely favour the big clubs isn’t even subtilely corrupt...not that the football media would highlight it as they depend on games being played for their jobs.

In terms of Thursday Samatta for Davis, anyone for Trezeguet & the same other 9?

Would probably take a point :-) :-) :-)

We haven't leaked too many goals per game since the restart. It could happen against someone and maybe these as they seem to be good again. I fancy us for the draw.  1-1 maybe.

I'd take that Bren. Our XG against has gone from the worst in the league to the 4th or something daft- so we've stopped giving away such a glut of chances. But we need to risk more in the final third.

Mind you, McGinn's improvement on Sunday seemed to coincide with a much better counter attack.

This is basically it. Win or bust. We've already got a 4 point gap to make up, with shit goal difference. Unfortunately we've already had our token once in a blue moon good performance against Utd. I think we're gonna get trounced, and if West Ham or Watford pick up anything in their next games, we might as well start planning for life back in the Championship. We have to win our home games at least to stay up. We're gonna need 3 wins in our final 5 games bare minimum. I just don't see that. The chances have been there since restart but we've not taken the opportunity to catch teams on beach mode. We've not played a single side that looked all that sharp yet, and we've given sides very comfortable 2nd gear victories. There's just too much to do now. I think the players know that, so I expect us to crumble at the first sign of trouble. If/when Utd score we'll cave.

We're a shambles at the back, only slightly better than Garde and Blacks shambles of the Lescott, Richards, Cissokho, Richardson, Hutton, Lyden, Bacuna, Clark and all that toss era

I don't think we've been too bad at the back since the re-start. It's the other end of the pitch that's the main problem.

You Forget how horrid their fans are until you talk to one. Had a united supporting employee tell me that Grealish isn't good enough for their bench today, and would be annoyed if they signed him and he stopped their better youth players gf trying game time.

Told him he'd be their best player.

Hope we get an unlikely win.

Dean's pre-match blurb: "We have to maintain our standards defensively and better them if possible. If we do that, we're in the game and we have to make sure that we turn on our quality in the final third."

Got it. So, play better all round then.
Just needs " we go again" at the end of the sentence to be the second coming of PL
I'll go for - pointless optimism 0 defeatist but realistic pessimism 3

I absolutely hate this fixture. I have an intense hatred of the red scum and wins over them are so rare. They're bang in form and although we played better at 'The Mighty Reds YNWA', I can only see one result. Us nil them 3 or 4.

At least we won't have to endure their scumbag fans. I remember going to the North Stand on a non-matchday just after that semi final when Giggs scored that goal. A game they won but they still ripped out a load of seats. Heathens the lot of them.

I hate this fixture more than pretty much any other one.

However, my biggest objection is having the vile ****** in our ground in the first place, which isn't a problem this year.

So we're already ahead.

3-0 no fucking bother.

On one occasion I sold H&V outside the away end entrance at VP. The arrogance and sheer ignorance throughout the 2+ hours was unbelievable. The highlight, though, was when one of them shouted out at the top of his voice directly at me, "Have you won the European Cup?"

"Yes, mate. May 26th 1982 against Bayern Munich." He just stared vacantly at me.

This is the worse possible time, we could be playing United, with the present form of Fernandes, Martial, Rashford and Greenwood. Just hoping we can defend as well as we did against Liverpool and can keep the score down to a respectable level, being realistic wouldn't be too unhappy with a 2 goal defeat.

Much as I love him, McGinn has looked more likely to score himself a Balti pie at full time than a long-range screamer since the restart. He is bang out of form and I just can't see it.

Luiz is due a howitzer though, and Jack will be playing up to impress his new boss

I would be surprised if the SKY commentators even mention us, they will just talk about them constantly, they cant wait to get there beloved Man Utd back in the top 4

Strange when they were in the top 4 - Sky always said the "big 4 teams" once they started to be 6th in league it became the "big 6"

I hope we win - the finance director a Utd fan and season ticket holder, where I work reckons it will 7-0 to UTD, i hope tomorrow morning I am the one laughing at him!

Jon Moss is ref tonight btw, this decade's Phil Dowd so will be 90 minutes of just being grateful to get a free kick in the opposition half and watching them all take turns to foul Grealish before one gets booked in the 95th minute.
