Go on then, get started.
-
On a positive note, at least their fans wont be able to run on the pitch this time.
-
One of the most out of form teams in Europe vs one of the, if not the most in form team in Europe. A team that can't score a goal, versus one that has multiple 20 goal scorers and new teen sensation who now has 9 goals in 8 games or something like that. The good news is they have De Gea. I'll go for 1-0 up with 2 minutes to go and a late goal by Scholes to win it for them after Giggs equalizes. Or maybe they bring on Macheda as their 5th sub
-
More valiant losing methinks. It's a free hit, might as well go for it.
-
Do we have to? For the 100th time in our history we're playing them at exactly the wrong time.
Could've done with playing them in January instead of Man. City. We played really well at Old Trafford in November but they were starting likes of Lingard, Periera and Mata back then.
I said before the Liverpool game I thought of the two Man. United were more likely to give us a bigger hiding so I think we'll lose by a three goal margin.
Simply have to go all out for the 3 points v Palace regardless of what happens on Thursday.
In a funny way thought I'd be interested to see how BCD impacts on this fixture. VP is like paranoia central whenever Man. United cross the halfway line if we're a goal up given the history of this fixture in last 20 years so at least that won't filter down to the players this time.
-
Ugh. I haven't missed this game.
-
Us 6 them 0
-
Is it our place or theirs?
-
Oh. Ours. 0-4.
-
Is Didier Six doing anything these days?
-
Keinan to keep Maguire occupied. I can't see them not scoring, so 2-1 - Jack, Conor and Martial.
-
More misery and another inept coaching performance. No doubt complaining about too many games, poor lambs.
0-3
-
0-something
-
There is a quick turn around to the Palace game on Sunday. Some of our players will be fooked after this. I'd be tempted to rest/drop McGinn so that he's not blowing out of his growing arse on Sunday.
-
Heart is hoping for some Mortimeresque running and scoring for us from anywhere to conclude MOTD later that evening. Head is telling me we’re going to huff and puff and they’ll undo us several times 0-2
-
Unfortunately can only see 1 result and it is not us winning - 0-3
Whenever we play Utd I always think of the Graydon cross to a leaping Andy Gray at the far post (for me that was a goal of football beauty)
-
9 or 10 nil to them.
-
I just want us to be bold, have a crack and see what happens. Currently we are going down without really laying a glove on anyone. We have to be more unpredictable, give teams something to think about. If that means 5-3-3 with Barry and Samatta up front with AEG out wide then so be it - just dont be so utterly, mindnumbingly pedestrian FFS.
Reina
Hause Mings
Guilbert Konsa
Luis
McGinn AEG

Standard, very Aston Villa goal in each half, 0-2 away win.
-
Head says 0-5.
Heart says we’ll somehow be in a promising position and they’ll turn it around late on.
-
This terrible run against Man U at VP has to end one day..
Please let it be on Thursday!
Watford and Norwich will end 2-2 aswell.
-
This is the watershed - a hammering we will not recover from, another tight defeat will maybe keep some confidence. I fear the former.
-
Liverpool were on the beach, and still beat us without breaking sweat. Man U need to win to try and catch Chelsea in 4th, and also stay ahead of Wolves. In Fernandes, they probably have the most in form player in the Premier League. Only one way this is ending.
-
at least we have trezeguet
-
Do we have to, nothing to us a few to them
-
I’m gonna be optimistic here and go for a 0-0. I think it’s hope rather than optimism though
-
They might be on form and scoring freely but Bournemouth managed to score twice against them the other day meaning there is a definite fragility at the back that we can aim to exploit. I don't want to see a repeat of the Chelsea game - let's just go for it. Get Louie Barry involved in the squad from now onwards, too.
-
2-0 up with 15 minutes to go all singing, 'there's only one Ian Taylor.' 82 minutes 2-3 with them all singing 'there's only one Ian Taylor.'
-
Let’s try again....
Surely we must be due one of those unexpected, shock results? Surely?
-
A fairly predictable reverse.
0-2
-
Wow Man U coming to their favourite ground Out side old Trafford I’m not going to listen to my head 1-0
-
0-4
-
2-0 up with 15 minutes to go all singing, 'there's only one Ian Taylor.' 82 minutes 2-3 with them all singing 'there's only one Ian Taylor.'
God I hated that game. Baffled why we gave them the whole of the lower Witton that night instead of the usual Upper North for FA cup games as we do now. Was just an open invitation for them to do their pitch invasion after the thirs goal (which the press just ignored). Think that really started our near 20 year inferiority complex against them at VP.
Think we also drew them 4 times in the 3rd round of the FA cup in just 6 seasons. Leicester probably had shorter odds when they won the league.
-

I fear we're going to be knackered for the Palace game. 3 points off the Plastics would be a price worth paying. 2-0 Villa. McGinn and Samattagol.
-
Could we forfeit, accept the standard 0-3 defeat as penalty and be all rested and ready to beat Palace on Sunday ?

Giving them effectively home advantage that day by having supporters around 50% of our pitch perimeter has got to be one of the lowest points in supporting our great club, something I’ve always wanted to ask Steve Stride as he always seemed to have his finger on the pulse , just what were you thinking?
-
0-2
And we pick ourselves up and go again ::)
-
I think today's game between Watford and Norwich will have a lot to do with how Villa play, how the player respond, said before the Liverpool game, we need to start getting points, 1-1
-
Such is the hoodoo they have over us in this fixture, they could pick 11 random fans to start, and still somehow end up winning.
Lawro on the Beeb website is also going for an easy ManU win, but he actually makes some good points: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/53308609
Liverpool could do that because, since football restarted amid the coronavirus pandemic, teams are allowed to use five subs now, instead of three.
I don't think there was any need to make a change to the laws of the game there whatsoever, and what it does is give all the top teams with more depth in their squad an extra chance to make that quality count.
It is a factor in why the bottom four have picked up so few points since the restart, and it is another problem for Villa in this game too.
-
0-3 defeat.
-
We’ll lose and probably fail to score.
-
One thing is guaranteed. Grealish will have his best game for a while in for the season.
-
I've heard that as part of the Grealish deal they've agreed to draw the game and let KD score.
-
Nil. Just fucking nil.
Don't get your hopes up, it's just not worth it.

After Watford’s result tonight, it does now kind of feel like the end is nigh, even with their tough final few games. Lose this as I think we will and it piles so much pressure on the palace game, especially if Watford are 7 points ahead by then which they could be.
Or somehow the miracle performance we’ve all been waiting for, strong and disciplined at the back, tenacious in midfield and creative up top. It ain’t gonna happen but feck it 2-1 villa, with a late goal from McGinn.
-
We now have to produce the freak result vs United that Watford did vs Liverpool - we just to need to achieve it without a home support, in a game where managers get to give 4 team talks & in a game where 5 subs make it almost inevitable that the stronger squad prevails in the final 20 minutes when you reduce the variables.
Never thought there would be anything this season that would be worse than the awful implementation of VAR but Project Restart is utter garbage. Changing rules mid season to purely favour the big clubs isn’t even subtilely corrupt...not that the football media would highlight it as they depend on games being played for their jobs.
In terms of Thursday Samatta for Davis, anyone for Trezeguet & the same other 9?
Would probably take a point :-) :-) :-)

It’s shit or bust.
I’d drop Trez and play Jack up front with Davis.
I’d also rotate McGinn with Conor. A half each.

Lets not die wondering Villa.

Plucky underdogs hold out for 70 minutes, concede, chase the game, concede another, then collapse completely. 4-0

Start pinging a few balls at Ally's noggin and have Jack playing off him.

I said on another thread (not sure which one), but I think, despite understanding why he might not be a starter, not bringing Hourihane on when we need a goal is mental.
-
But we know that Smith will not be venturous, it will be the same tried, tested and failed formation he puts out week after week.
-

yep. i'd stick him up front to start off with. Its not question whether he's that good, it's whether he's more likely to score than Davis and Samatta given a chance, and he is IMO
-
1-3, Villa audaciously score first, we go in 1-1 at h/t, then its all over before the second drinks break.
-
Mild belief followed by grim reality.
-
What ever happens. He needs to shake up the front line. So playing Jack and Conor/Davis/Samatta. Elmo right midfield is a decent shout.
All very unorthodox but we need to try something.
-
my grandad used to say he could feel a goal coming in his bones (pronounced booooons as he was from Cradely). I just wonder.

Dean, I hope you are reading this. Or anybody that knows Dean.

We might indeed score a goal, although I doubt it. Trouble is, they'll score three or four.

Man utd still have something to play for. This won't be like the liverpool game. More like the Chelsea game.

We haven't leaked too many goals per game since the restart. It could happen against someone and maybe these as they seem to be good again. I fancy us for the draw. 1-1 maybe.

I'd take that Bren. Our XG against has gone from the worst in the league to the 4th or something daft- so we've stopped giving away such a glut of chances. But we need to risk more in the final third.
Mind you, McGinn's improvement on Sunday seemed to coincide with a much better counter attack.
-
Reminds me of an old interview with Brian Clough.....”Brian, what do you need to do to win this match?”...Brian: score one more goal than the other team.👍
-
I hope we win but I can see a United 2-0 win.
-
A nasty feeling we'll get torn a new one......
-
This is basically it. Win or bust. We've already got a 4 point gap to make up, with shit goal difference. Unfortunately we've already had our token once in a blue moon good performance against Utd. I think we're gonna get trounced, and if West Ham or Watford pick up anything in their next games, we might as well start planning for life back in the Championship. We have to win our home games at least to stay up. We're gonna need 3 wins in our final 5 games bare minimum. I just don't see that. The chances have been there since restart but we've not taken the opportunity to catch teams on beach mode. We've not played a single side that looked all that sharp yet, and we've given sides very comfortable 2nd gear victories. There's just too much to do now. I think the players know that, so I expect us to crumble at the first sign of trouble. If/when Utd score we'll cave.
-
Nil points
-
Dean's pre-match blurb: "We have to maintain our standards defensively and better them if possible. If we do that, we're in the game and we have to make sure that we turn on our quality in the final third."
Got it. So, play better all round then.
-
maintain standards? what standards?
We're a shambles at the back, only slightly better than Garde and Blacks shambles of the Lescott, Richards, Cissokho, Richardson, Hutton, Lyden, Bacuna, Clark and all that toss era
-
I don't think we've been too bad at the back since the re-start. It's the other end of the pitch that's the main problem.
-
You Forget how horrid their fans are until you talk to one. Had a united supporting employee tell me that Grealish isn't good enough for their bench today, and would be annoyed if they signed him and he stopped their better youth players gf trying game time.
Told him he'd be their best player.
Hope we get an unlikely win.
-
I think we'll need to score 3 or 4 to win this.
Can't see it I'm afraid.

it's been a slight improvement - but still not good enough :(

Just needs " we go again" at the end of the sentence to be the second coming of PL
I'll go for - pointless optimism 0 defeatist but realistic pessimism 3

They don't bother me, until you go to Old Trafford and its like they've scooped up everything you detest about football and its dolloped en mass. Fucking twats.
-
A repeat of season 1966/67.
We win 2-1. :)
But still get relegated. :(
-
0-4 them.
-
Win against these clarts and I'd almost take the relegation.
-
I know it’s probably been said before but just wouldn’t it put the icing on our shit sandwich of a season to beat these ****** at home in the league for the first time in 25 years and none of us are there to witness it in person.
Typical fucking Villa.
-
I absolutely hate this fixture. I have an intense hatred of the red scum and wins over them are so rare. They're bang in form and although we played better at 'The Mighty Reds YNWA', I can only see one result. Us nil them 3 or 4.
At least we won't have to endure their scumbag fans. I remember going to the North Stand on a non-matchday just after that semi final when Giggs scored that goal. A game they won but they still ripped out a load of seats. Heathens the lot of them.
-
I hate this fixture more than pretty much any other one.
However, my biggest objection is having the vile ****** in our ground in the first place, which isn't a problem this year.
So we're already ahead.
3-0 no fucking bother.
Davis, Davis, Davis.

On one occasion I sold H&V outside the away end entrance at VP. The arrogance and sheer ignorance throughout the 2+ hours was unbelievable. The highlight, though, was when one of them shouted out at the top of his voice directly at me, "Have you won the European Cup?"
"Yes, mate. May 26th 1982 against Bayern Munich." He just stared vacantly at me.

Sounds like them. Fuck all knowledge of the game outside of their own club, and even then........

Have a funny feeling we are going to beat them.

Please be right. Please be right. Please be right. Please be right. Please be right.

Pretty sure one season they were singing about how we'd never won the double. Thick ******. As always it's a toss up between them and Liverpool for most detestable fans.

Can't have been a Brummie Red then, as we know those Small Heath loving twats know us inside out.

We are 9 to 1 to win tomorrow night at home.
I doubt in our vast glorious history that such odds have ever been that bad.
Worth a tenner.
Have just done that with bells on. UTV

Alea iacta est.

Yes mate. Trusted source. I posted the team for Liverpool the day before in the pre March thread the other day.
Stupidly I didn’t ask whose dropped!! I assume Trez but that’ part is a guess.

So midfield and attack of;
SJM
Luiz
SJG
AEG
Davis
Samatta

Us 2 Them 3
Plucky defeat snatched from the jaws of a plucky win.
-
I think I would play samatta and vass up top and tell an not to let the defence settle, take it to em,we sit back time and time again with one forward who just isn't mobile enough and we will always wilt towards the end, show some nuts and fight it out with em
-
A repeat of season 1966/67.
We win 2-1. :)
But still get relegated. :(
Lew Chatterley to score the winner :)
-
The last time I saw us beat them was in 2009!
-
Last time any of us did. Previously it was 1999 and 1996 and 1994. 4 times in 26 years, ergh.
-
The last time I saw us beat them was up at Old Trafford under MON.
-
My favourite win against them was the Didier Six match - 1984.
-
Hate these games, having them so close to the end of the season feels like an extra kick in the bollocks. Like wading through that huge tunnel of shit in The Shawshank Redemption only to come out the other side and find out you've just tunnelled into the Saw franchise.
-
Hello CD, let's play a little game. You're 2-0 with 5 to go. The rules are simple, do you shoot yourself in the left nut and lose 3-2 or the right nut...and lose 3-2?
-
Is shooting myself in the head not an option? 🤔
-
I'm really struggling to see how whatever midfield combination Smith picks today is going to deal with Pogba and Fernandes. We need Jack and Luiz to have the game of their lives. I'd be telling Davis to keep pressuring Maguire as well.
-
I'm going to be crazy and think we'll win. McGinn or Luiz will crack a shot off from outside of the box. Then it's back to defending...

Alan Hutton on Talksport now.
-
The game kicks off at 20:15. Is this the latest ever scheduled time for a VP game? (I know that Liverpoop League Cup game started late and went on all night 15 years ago or so.)
-
This is the worse possible time, we could be playing United, with the present form of Fernandes, Martial, Rashford and Greenwood. Just hoping we can defend as well as we did against Liverpool and can keep the score down to a respectable level, being realistic wouldn't be too unhappy with a 2 goal defeat.
-
Sod it, 25 years can be reset after tonight. 2-1 Villa. Late Luiz screamer
-

Much as I love him, McGinn has looked more likely to score himself a Balti pie at full time than a long-range screamer since the restart. He is bang out of form and I just can't see it.
Luiz is due a howitzer though, and Jack will be playing up to impress his new boss
-
Well, McGinn could still do it, and Luiz is due letting one off.
And yes, Grealish will be looking to show he's worth the much mula mentioned
-
I would be surprised if the SKY commentators even mention us, they will just talk about them constantly, they cant wait to get there beloved Man Utd back in the top 4
Strange when they were in the top 4 - Sky always said the "big 4 teams" once they started to be 6th in league it became the "big 6"
I hope we win - the finance director a Utd fan and season ticket holder, where I work reckons it will 7-0 to UTD, i hope tomorrow morning I am the one laughing at him!

Fearing the worse, but hoping for the best. History is not on our side in this fixture. Come on VILLA!!

We need to score the only goal of the game in the last twenty seconds of injury time, for obvious reasons.

We started with them v Wolves and there wasn't much positivity on show. Shape wise we have been a lot better in last games. I'd expect that to continue today but another narrow defeat.
-

They'd add 5 minutes additional time to allow for our celebration.
-
Jon Moss is ref tonight btw, this decade's Phil Dowd so will be 90 minutes of just being grateful to get a free kick in the opposition half and watching them all take turns to foul Grealish before one gets booked in the 95th minute.
Edit: Read a few weeks ago he runs a retro Music shop in Headingley.
-
I just hope we don’t go 2.0 up.
-
I don't think it'll be a mauling because we have genuinely tightened up at the back but we just have nothing going forward except an off form Jack. 0-2

I’m glad we’re going two up front. It’s not a massive surprise it didn’t work against Wolves as I’m pretty sure it’s the first time this season we’ve had two up top. I’d like Us to persevere with it and work at it.

For some reason I have been selected for the fanwall tonight. The fact that I'm on camera may help me relax a bit...

As long as he doesn’t then give it away immediately

John Moss is my second least favourite ref after Kevin Friend and has fucked us over almost as many times.
-
Villa 2 (Mings 34, Samatta 48)
Manure 3 (Greenwood 87, Martial 89, Pogba 101)
Actually, they’ll beat us far more easily than that this time.
Existence is eternal sufferance ... well, it would be if all life was this fixture.

He always seems a fair few metres off the pace of the game to me as well.

0-4 to finally fuck up our goal difference...

Just got 40/1 on a Bournemouth & Villa double. A cool £1 at risk.

My apologies all. I actually even misread what he said !!
But my bad.

Trezeguet? Again? Really?
