I'd rest some players for this one. Give others a chance to play and wait for the important games.

With that in mind I think we'll scrape a 1-2 win.

How many of the kids that played us need games for a medal? I think they might pick a couple or three, give them a second chance at having at the Villa. Despite that, it's not hard to think they'll be too strong for us.

Heart says 2-2, head says 3-2 them. Luiz with both ours.

Klopp was very complimentary patronising about us and Villa Park after the league game. Hopefully he'll want to return.

More likely he's still peeved that we didn't fly to Qatar to play the League Cup tie.

The same will happen when we  return to Merseyside for the fixture across the park - although we may sneak a goal in that one

I hope they beat Man City tonight and then have a rest on Sunday by playing a load of kids.  Either than, or they suffer outrageous injuries and sendings off tonight. That said, the way we are playing, without setting all those wonderful traps and being really hard to beat and the fantastic spending we have been involved with, I reckon their kids will beat us.  Hope for the best, expect utter tosh.  This is Villa.

I would 100% be playing Drinkwater alongside Luiz anchoring midfield for the first hour of the next two games - we have to find a way to get Jack / McGinn etc further up field and none of the other central midfielders have taken their chances

                 Reina
Guilbert Mings Hause Taylor
          Luiz Drinkwater
     McGinn Jack A.N.Other
                Davis

Who would get the other shirt I have no clue - Nakamba / Hourihane / El Ghazi have done barely nothing since restart to deserve to start
Trezeguet / Jota / Lansbury have done little all season to deserve a go

Sure Reina won’t start as Nylands brain fart vs Wolves didn’t cost a goal but his inability to catch is worrying me more
Not sure if Guilbert fit but if he is he’d be busy tracking Robertson :-)
Sure Taylor will give Alexander-Arnold a game :-)

2-1 Villa, we have to start getting something, somewhere, Bournemouth are away to Man Utd, tough call for them, just when you think it couldn't get more tricky Watford are at Chelsea, fortunately Watford are no West Ham, but the West Ham win will give them renewed hope and a target to aim for, we need to get something from Liverpool. can't let Watford, Bournemouth or West Ham to start pulling away from us now.

Maybe a 3-5-1-1 which would allow for Jack playing just behind Samatta:
                                     Reina

                Gilbert             Mings         Hause

Elmohamady      Luiz        McGinn   Hourihane  El Ghazi

                                      Grealish

                                       Samatta

Something different is worth a try. However, Mane not going to have another stinker and will suddenly find his shooting boots.

Liverpool's defending was as bad as ours at Watford, which is quite remarkable.

0-3 Grealish hat-trick.

I reckon Jack might be up for this game knowing the rivalry between his new paymasters and the red scouse.

Maybe Maguire will reciprocate the 'like' Grealish gave him with a Villa win.

Put them in first and get some early wickets.
The Anfield pitch isn't renowned for spin but I reckon Jim Cumbes medium pace could get some joy, their middle order batting looked weak against City last night.

Samatta/Davis didn't work at all v Wolves so I think we need to try McGinn or AEG up there instead playing off Davis. McGinn was actually decent enough when he came on v Wolves so maybe bring both of them in. Midfield options are very limited as looks like Drinky or even Ramsey aren't seen as an option and we can't consider starting Hourihane at Anfield. Our shape defensively was decent against Wolves so think we should keep a similar formation

If Steer still isn't fit then I think we need to get the tubby baldly guy back in nets. Hit Davis and play from there when we get the ball.

--------------------Reina
Guilbert/Elmo, Hause, Mings, Taylor

----------McGinn, Nakamba,

Reina to start and have an absolute blinder - us to win 1-0. Van Dick bringing down Jack in the 97th min, ref books Jack for diving but VAR (Kevin Friend) overturns the decision and gives us a pen, Jack takes it and scores a 'panenka'

There's talk of Louie Barry being involved.

There was before lockdown, eg the cup final.  Never happened.  Can't see it personally.

Really good strikers turn a bad ball into a good ball as they work hard.  We make so many excuses for our players.  When Samatta has had chances, he's fluffed them, so have Davis.

Agree with this, although might have Elmo in, instead of Guilbert. With West Ham winning on Wednesday and having a seemingly easier run in, we have to try something completely left field. It’s time for smith to be brave. El Ghazi and Trez are not going to get us out of this,
Strongest part of nylands game is shot stopping and I imagine Liverpool having lots of shots

At villa park we should have won.
Or at least had a point
I'm sure Smith has reminded the players of this and that we matched them
I was at the game so I know.

Now what with each clubs situation Villa need is greater and I see us getting a result .
Maybe not 3pts but don't think we'll lose this one.

Man Utd after is another story. But tomorrow an inspired performance can see us show the league what we re about.

Tomorrow irrespective of the final score what none of us should be saying is that we didn’t want to win more than them. They have nothing at all left to play for in the league outside if stats. We have way more to lose and gain. If it only comes down to us losing based on quality of players then so be it.

Not sure what I would do with this one. It is a bit of a free shot as there is pretty much zero expectation of anything other than a Liverpool win. We could be bold and try something different, play some of the youngsters, which I wouldn’t be totally against. Or more likely, put out the strongest team available and gee them up as much as possible and just fkn go for it. We had them at 1-0 at VP with 2 mins to go. Whatever approach we take, I’d rather us throw everything at it and get thumped than meekly surrender for a 2-0. Just show some fight and bottle Villa, something we can take into the rest of the fixtures.

So we put out the same team that hasn’t shown much in the way of fight or bottle, and hope they suddenly show loads of fight and bottle?

This is free hit, no fans too. Give Vass and Barry a try for 60 minutes. Can it really be any worse than AEG of Trez, again?

This feels like a pivotal moment in our season.  All of our relegation rivals did us a favour yesterday and now we have to capitalise on that.  Even a point would be helpful but 3 would be dreamland.  What a time to show that we're capable of coming away from the tough games with something.  We're probably going to need a surprise results somewhere, so let's make it today.

I think the manager, who values emotional control and has become a pragmatist as of late will be more than happy with a point given yesterday's results. A toxic mix that will unfold as a pretty ugly spectacle from our point of view, but may, just may yeild that positive single figure dividend.

2-0 loss.

State of this:

"Because they live in the Midlands.

That's enough to make them hate every other part of the country.

Jesus Christ, OK some of the Midlands doesn't exactly rival the Amalfi coast for scenery, but compared to Merseyside?  I genuinely cannot think of a single nice area in Liverpool itself, which is why anybody with any sense lives outside in places like Cheshire, Southport or Formby.

And as for this one:

"After that pretty much a sad decline into a yo yo club their only saving grace being that they were marginally less shite than Birmingham City"

So two relegations in 40 years makes us a yo-yo club?  Scouse twat.

Newcastle are humourless dimwits. Plenty mocked us on our way down- rightly so, we were terrible and the biggest club to have been relegated since football began. We took it on the chin.

Those Gerodie windbags proper got their knockers in a twist which made it funny when we sent them down a 2nd time. But bitter doesn't cover it.

I'm more amused by the tribalism of football as I get older. If we won the league, our match threads would start 'The Champions' or similar, you can guarantee it. You can definitely find some sticks to beat Liverpool fans with, but this isn't one of them.

I'm ok with a respectable loss today - they are in a different planet, let alone league, than us currently. And it don't cost us relegation.

But I am looking for two things - desire (awareness of our position) and energy (they have not played for 8 days). If we see another lifeless, listless display, it tells us everything about the manager, his coaches, the players, and the club generally - and the wholesale changes required to even think about ever competing back in this league again

Just in case you wanted a reminder of what Liverpool fans are like.  Note their pre-match thread is called 'Champions V Villa'.

Haven't read the link but I don't get whats wrong with calling themselves Champions ?
It's a bit wanky.

Legion or TV/PWS would on our match threads if we we had just won the league.

I still can't understand why supporters like theirs (and to a lesser case Newcastle's) haven't yet realised that, local rivalries aside, you can pay no bigger compliment to a club than to hate them.
I can partly understand the Newcastle thing because we really stuck the knife in, but what have we ever done to upset Liverpool?

Won their cup once. And Newcastle are a classic example of not understanding - they thought it was just us without realising that everyone would have laughed at them and any other club of their size that was in trouble.

The second one was hilarious. They came to have a right good laugh at us, but found the Holte in party mood.

Then as a bonus, couldn’t beat us, despite the fact we barely mustered a cross, and then got relegated while Sunderland stayed up!
