The same team.
-
Ffs
-
Yeah. I think I'll give this one a miss.

-
Inevitably the same team.
And bench I think !
-
Bugger, I was hoping for Samatta and Davis. Glad Davis has remained in the starting 11 though.
-
Not surprised to see no changes. If we can get a bit more from McGinn and Grealish then hopefully we can give them a game.
-
Win please Villa
-
That isn't the strongest Chelsea team.
Smash them Viila.
-
Inevitably the same team.
And bench I think !
all so predicatable. Lampard likely knew what out team would be on Wednesday and that injuries aside we won't make a sub today until the 65th minute.
-

And bench I think !
Not the same. Drinkwater is ineligible. Indiana the newcomer, I think?

That is some bench! Anyone of those would walk into our team
-
Inevitably the same team.

If he had made four changes he would be getting slaughtered by the "doesn't know his best team" moaners. We were generally alright, but lacking a bit of spark, on Wednesday. No reason whatsoever to make wholesale changes, or be whinging before a ball is kicked if we didn't make changes for the sake of it.
-
He’s starting to get on my nerves now
-
Can understand logic in unchanged team as we played o.k on Wednesday but worried we'd hit the wall on the hour mark and the subs really didn't help us.
Surprised at some of the Chelsea selections. Reece James was brilliant at RB against us in the away game and the front 3 is pretty slow compared to what they could've selected. Loftus Cheek has also barely played in 18 months.
However Pedro, Tammy and Pulisic will give them plenty of energy from hour mark so that is a concern.
-
That’s Samatta off to score goals elsewhere then
-
Can’t see past a heavy defeat. 1-4.
-
Jeez, biblical rain in Stourbridge. Is it raining in B6?
-
Inevitably the same team.

I can see the pros and cons really. Makes sense to keep the same backline given we finally kept a clean sheet. However I'd have left McGinn out for this one and put in Nakamba. Saved SJM for Newcastle as he really struggled to get into the game on Wednesday so think at this point he can be more effective off the bench.
Probably will be at 70th minute mark. We need to be winning.
-
Famous last words but that isn't the Chelsea side I expected and we might scrape a draw out of this. Saying that, their bench is better than our team!
-
Can’t see past a heavy defeat. 1-4.
I was thinking the very same.
-
Oh well.
-
Chelsea are going to have a field day here - wrong selection for me. Its like Dean thinks a draw would be a good result - too little, too late.
-
Hate Giroud. Crap yet loves a goal v Villa.
-
This was never going to be the game to go gung ho. As others have said, while it's far from ideal, a point isn't a total disaster. We looked reasonably solid, if uninspired, on Wednesday and that's what's required today. What we absolutely do not need is to go down 3-0.
-
Inevitably the same team.

And we don’t need wholesale changes. I thought Konsa was ineffective at RB. Much rather see Guilbert who was training and appears to be fit or Elmo. More balance. And play Samatta instead of AEG. But what’s maddening is that Dean Smith will play the same way. We’ve seen it all season. And we will lump the ball up to KD all game and a top side like Chelsea will hit us on the counter if he can’t make it stick and bring other players into the game
-
He’s starting to get on my nerves now
Really? I know how you feel.
-
I have to say it feels a little like an Eric Black team sheet. "Chalk it up, lads. Onto the next one."
-
Jeez, biblical rain in Stourbridge. Is it raining in B6?
Might be heading that way, darkening skies over Smethwick way. Mind you, all forecasts had it being hairily stormy on Wednesday, which didn't transpire to that level.
-
I was clinging on some straws that teams playing their second game would be fitter however Arsenal defeat yesterday and Newcastle winning ATM has destroyed that notion.
-

I wouldn't worry too much about either of those, Arsenal look like they just can't be bothered with the games and Sheff U were fine unitl they lost Egan but now they're playing a back 4 with players who are used to playing in a 5 and there's big gaps all over the place.
-
That’s Samatta off to score goals elsewhere then
Why, just because he is on the bench?
-
Can’t see past a heavy defeat. 1-4.

I'm just hoping it's not a cricket score. Need a big step up from Wednesday.

We don't have a good enough squad to pick and choose who we play our best players against. If McGinn and Grealish are fit, they start, imo.
-
Can’t see past a heavy defeat. 1-4.
I was thinking the very same.
I really can't see the 11 they've started with coming close to anything like that scoreline. Chelsea really don't score many away goals. It does look like a game however where the 5 subs could make huge difference as their bench is in a different league to what we have as options.

Guilbert and Elmo are both more attacking and less likely to start against an established top side like Chelsea. There is no evidence that Samatta will make a winger, they're too good to experiment against, and we need someone who will track back against these. Samatta for KD is the only change I'd have considered, but no harm in having him available to bring on if we need him.
I think you would be moaning whatever team we put out. Sticking with a team that played well is hardly the most controversial tactic.
-
Dropping El Ghazi and bringing in Samatta seems the obvious change.
-
I really, really cannot understand why Smith persistently uses probably the most gifted central midfield play in the league where opposition managers would want to see him... out chalking his boots on the left touchline.
Bloody clueless.
-
I get why he has gone for the same team, it does rather confirm the suggestion that Smith is a very cautions limited manager.
Let’s hope it works.
-

I doubt many managers would deploy Grealish out wide.

I think that was the point of Lam's post.

Without wanting this to turn into a 'better fan than yow' style argument I do think some people have decided Smith is done and therefore they are hyper critical of him regardless of what he does. I don't mean that as a criticism because it's exactly where I was with Bruce for most of the time he was here so I totally understand it.
-
DS said earlier in the week that he would stick to his “tried and trusted” 4-3-3...I think he’s the only one of us would call it trusted.
-

If he moves to Man. United he'll be playing out wide given what they have centrally.
I get what people are saying but he's contributed many goals and assists from a wide position this year. He played as a pure 10 in August and September yet we struggled to win and even score and Jack was struggling for his best form aswell.
It would also mean Trez or Jota probably starting aswell if we moved him back centrally.
Saying that I'd like to see him in a free role behind a front two of Samatta and Davis. I think we'll see that in the near future as last throw of the dice and it could very well work.
-
If we don’t win/get a performance today, Smith needs a roasting. A Steve Bruce Newcastle side have just smashed the team we stole a point off midweek (who are also a game further on fitness wise than Newcastle).
Glaringly obvious that Grealish is wasted out on left, and both Keinan and Ally offer nothing going solo up top. Should have played both up top today.
-

Rudy, I’ve got a ST code I’m not using if you want it??

Does he actually play wide? I don't care where his name is on the teamsheet, is he actually out getting chalk on his boots? Looking on the heatmap from wednesday I see no evidence that he doesn't have as free role to wander and find space but with a responsibility to look after the opposition right back when we're defending.
-
We didn't steal a point and they didn't smash them until the red card when SU coallpsed. Newcastle hardly looked much cop before that.
-
So annoying we're not on Pick considering they're showing the other two Sunday games. I think that's the case when we play Palace in two weeks and we're the middle game of the three on the Sunday that isn't shown.
-

Cheers, fella. PM sent.

That's fine - it wasn't obvious from the way I read it.

This
It was a crap game with little chances then the red card came and Shef United fell apart starting with Enda Stevens cock up for the first goal.
-

Fair point. But regardless of what happened, on paper, we drew 0-0 against Sheffield Utd at home, one of our close competitors (managed by a guy we slaughtered!) have just played them a few days later, and won 3-0.
God, I want him to succeed as much as any villa fan, but he’s come back, and second game in, doesn’t appear to have learnt anything.... same team, replaced like for like off the bench in the first game (65th minute standard affair).
Hope he turns it around, but fucking hell, he’s not helping himself really?!
Biggest highlight from the Sheffield game was Luiz’s performance. Hopefully that continues today with the addition of a few others.
-
Looks like the limit of ambitions is to be hard to beat.
Again.

yes his starting position is and as you say he has defensive responsibility out there which means he is not as free as many of us would like to see.
-
El Ghazi again?
-
Davis already introducing himself to Chelsea backline.

Do many players get given no defensive responsilibities though? My point is that I don't think there's any evidence that it has limited his ability to find space nad make things happen.

From the Beeb
"A win for the hosts would ensure Villa become just the second team in top-flight history to win a match on all seven days of the week within a season, emulating Tottenham in 1986-87."
Pretty staggering seeing we've only won 6 games so far.
-
Watching on Now TV...is there any way to turn off the fake crowd noise as it’s way too loud and barely here commentary? I’m selected Sky Sports Main Event but does it matter which of the many Sky Sports channels is selected.
-
Yep, 402 no noise.
-
Up the Villa!
-
Going to be a long 90 minutes. Chelsea quickly into their stride.
-
We don't look much cop so far. This formation isn't much use against a possession team like Chelsea.
-
We’re playing a proper team today.
-
This is a level of opposition far ahead of Wednesday's. Already, Chelsea look 'on it'
-
Can’t get the ball.
-

I think Sky sports Premiere League doesn't have the crowd noise
-
Being given the run around

Pretty sure it includes cup games
-
Look set up to soak up
-
Is there a Sky Channel which includes Villa getting into the Chelsea half?
-
I just saw the ball flash past Davis and I'd genuinely forgot he was on the pitch!
-
Have they all got their NHS badges on? I don't want to be arguing with Gammony Karen on Facebook later.

So a win on a Sunday and we run out of days☹️

Nice one. They just so happened to put up a scrolling banner saying SSPL doesn’t have the crowd noise. I’ll give this a go now 👍
-
Having weaklings in the team like El Ghazi and Hourihane is still a massive problem.
-
El Ghazi on fire.
-
Is there a Sky Channel which includes Villa getting into the Chelsea half?
Yep. It starts around 75/80 minutes when were 0-2 down, tune back in later.
-
Corner!
-
Having weaklings in the team like El Ghazi and Hourihane is still a massive problem.
Yep. Both look well off the pace and lightweight.
Conor has already wasted two out of two set pieces.
-
Corner at least.
Chelsea pretty weak at defending crosses.

No, league games only but we've won 7 not 6 (2 on Saturday).
-
Glad the ref is seeing these fouls
-
We need to play on the front foot because trying to hold them for 90 minutes will only end one way
-
Glad the ref is seeing these fouls
Yeah a few tactical ones too
-
DS said earlier in the week that he would stick to his “tried and trusted” 4-3-3...I think he’s the only one of us would call it trusted.
That’s quite worrying knowing tried and tested has us second bottom some points away from safety.
-
I'm a big fan of Hourihane but if he's going to waste free kicks and play long balls into touch I don't really see the point.
-
Men against boys.
If I could sum up this opening 20 minutes in one word (apart from shite!), it would be ‘blunt’.
Starting to fear the inevitable now.
-
McGuinn looks more like his old self
-
This is crap.
-
I'll be honest, I've watched more uplifting things in the last few months.
-
Nyland with a good save
-
If we let them play they will win. It's absolutely that simple. And it's been this way for almost all of this season.
-
McGuinn looks more like his old self
Roger McGuinn
-
We’re not very good.
-
We need some urgency.
-
Someone's got to be running off Davis; otherwise, what's the point of playing him?
-
Great save our kid.
-
I’d take a point right now
-
Good save Nyland.
-
Can I just just check is everyone else sitting a quiet corner of house being thoroughly miserable for the next hour and half or is it just me?
-
Feels like it's just a matter of time
-
I am convinced we practice the proven tactic of all winners "just let them have it for 85 minutes".
-
McGinn looks slow and a little bulky to me.
-
Nice save. I'd like us to show a lot more intent.
-
El Ghazi on the left is amazingly even worse than El Ghazi on the right!
-
Grealish doesn't look "on it"
-
Listening to wm. Gary thompson sounds like he is whispering. I’m at home whimpering.
-
So, we're still a bit rubbish then.
-
One up front isn't working so far.
-
I've spent 20 minutes finding a decent stream. I'm not sure if it was a valuable use of my time.
-
That save was ok but it's one every premier league keeper should make easily.
They've had the possession but haven't created anything so far. What I'd like to see is McGinn or Hourihane getting 10 yards further forward when we're defending and not giving them a huge gap to pass into in midfield.
-
It is the same old toothless, can't keep the ball for twenty seconds, uncreative, frustrating football that we have come to know and dislike this year.
-
Glad our extra match fitness Is paying off.
-
McGinn looks slow and a little bulky to me.
I said the same against Sheff Utd... looks to be carrying a lot more timber since his injury.
-
So, we're still a bit rubbish then.
Utterly fucking gash. This will end precisely how we all expect it to.
-
Hope that wasn't our good quarter.
-
Like a training game for Chelsea so far
-
Men against boys so far
-
Dean Smith is sending us down.
-
This is like an attackers vs defenders training session. Hope it’s our turn to attack in the second half.
-
When the whole of our fucking midfield is playing on our own 18 yard line, we have no chance of getting out.
Quarter time.
The usual points apply.
Toothless. Total lack of quality.
Championship.
-
It is the same old toothless, can't keep the ball for twenty seconds, uncreative, frustrating football that we have come to know and dislike this year.
I just don't understand our complete inability to pass to another Villa player.
-
Were they all on the piss last night?
-
End of the first quarter and I don't think we've had a first down yet.
-
One up front isn't working so far.
Nor will it. Anybody with a modicum of football knowledge understands Dean's selection and formation isnt working. Far too predictable - waiting for their first and then it will be carnage
-
this is game over as soon as they score.
-
what do you think Dean is telling out players during the water break?
"Lads we haven't given them the ball enough. You know we are better when we are 0-2 down with 10 minutes left"
-
It has the stench of relegation about what I’m hearing.
-
We've been very passive and deep. Only positive is we've limited them to 1 effort, which was speculative and well saved.
-
Drinks break came at a good time.
-
This is horrible to watch so far. Our only "tactic" appears to be lump it towards Davis and hope something luckily comes off.
That is of course during the 3% of the time we have the ball.
Chelsea are a good team, but nowhere near good enough for us to show them such a ludicrous amount of respect.
-
I'd be looking at changing it at half time if not before. Yes, they've only had one shot on target (good save from Nyland) but... We haven't had the ball yet have we? We won't keep it 0-0 by defending on sth 18 yard area. One of those games where you need the crowd.
-
God only knows what Smith sends us out to do in such games.
Poor so far. Still not a fan of Smith and his inept tactics.
-
It is the same old toothless, can't keep the ball for twenty seconds, uncreative, frustrating football that we have come to know and dislike this year.
I just don't understand our complete inability to pass to another Villa player.
It’s because there is no Villa player in front of the bloke with the ball mate.
-
On the plus side,Targett is a shoe-in for the Mrs. Doubtfire remake
-
The 4-3-3 was horrendous during our last few matches before lockdown, it looks like Dean Smith is hoping against hope that it's magically become more effective. It hasn't.
-
End of the first quarter and I don't think we've had a first down yet.
a number on interceptions from our QB, a few fumbles from our RB and dropped passes. You can't win if you keep turing the ball over.
-
At least we made it to the water break!
-
Dean Smith is sending us down.
as has geen said before, out thought and out fought - nice guy, but WAY out of his league. The writing has been on the wall for months. Time to move on, sadly.
-
Long afternoon in store based on that.
-
On the plus side,Targett is a shoe-in for the Mrs. Doubtfire remake
If there ever was a player who cannot pull off an alice band, it's him.
-
They are all over the place.
-
If we can get to half time 0-0 then maybe we can be more positive in the second half, perhaps go two up front. I bet we don't though.
-
I hope the Chelsea goalkeeper has brought a good book with him.
-
Are the players aware where we are in the table?
-
Men against boys. Chelsea have the desire.
-
Not enough pace; not enough dynamism.
-
Dunno who's doing co-comms on the Hesgoal stream but he's just pointed out that John Terry had a good career.
-
Yay. Their half.
-
Are the players aware where we are in he table?
I'd be asking if the manager does.
-
Grealish can't get into the game here.
-
Where's the f*****g urgency we are in the bottom 3 FFS ,show some fight
-
So much for match sharpness. They’re all knackered.
-
Not fair that they seem to be allowed to have twice as many players as us.
-
In all honesty, do we actually deserve to be in the PL?
Hackers.
-
At the moment it does look like a top flight team playing at home against a lower division club.
-
We'd have a better chance if we brought Davis, Grealish and SJM on.
-
Every fucking player except Davis inside our 18 yard line.
This is fucking amateur football, and fucking naive management.
-
This isn’t working! Dean is tactically inept.
-
Nyland, you little tease.
-
Second to everything. They don’t give a toss.
-
Alan Smith "It's extraordinary how one sided it is."
No it isn't.
-
23% possession, and most of that is the ball in the air as we hoof it
-
Oooohh
-
In all honesty, do we actually deserve to be in the PL?
Hackers.
We won the play offs, so yes, any more stupid questions?
-
WE DID A SHOT!
-
Are the players aware where we are in the table?
Yes and they are maintaining the standard.
-
Feels a bit like Leicester. Clinging on at 0-0 but floodgates could open when Chelsea score.
Need to get in 0-0 at half time and find a way to get our players on the ball in final third. Not like Chelsea are some impossible team to score against.
-
Cor, this is getting a bit embarrassing. Absolutely no ambition at the moment.
-
Are we just playing long ball. When we actually get the ball.
-
This is every bit as poor as all the other poor games this season. How have we not conceded yet?
-
We can't get a foothold here at all. Alan Smith saying we need the supporters, yeah maybe, but it would be to bollock them in to trying more. Nyland!! Shot from El Ghastly!!
-
Chelsea are a good team but we are so meek. Watching us you’d think we were safely in mid table and not bothered.
-
It’s like we play rope a dope except we are not Muhammad Ali
-
Is it a training match attack v defence? Really really bad
-
Ooooh again
-
A chance!
-
Drinks break came at a good time.
I think we all need one more than the players.... a 48hr bender should do the trick!
-
Arguably we have come closest to scoring...
-
Good defensive work out so far.
-
Are the players aware where we are in the table?
"Not to worry, plenty of games left. Is Nando's open?"
-
That one for McGinn is the best chance of the game so far for me.
-
And yet lo, when we attack with purpose we look dangerous
-
Rubbish. Our full backs are poor. Konsa and Targett allowing crosses into the box far too easily.
Mcginn had to do better.
Come on Villa
-
Nice move. Should have hit the target though
-
That cross was good, but look at Davis' position... not busting to get ahead of his man, but just running behind
-
Arguably we have come closest to scoring...
#slimmestsilverliningever
-
Christ, heading has been a weakness all season.
-
Davis is in a different postcode to the rest of the team. He's done okay, considering.
-
Conor McNamara
BBC Radio 5 live commentator
We've got to be quiet [with no fans making noise]. I was criticising the goalkeeper and Dean Smith and John Terry looked over. I don't like that.
-
Why can't Mings push the fuckers out a bit?
-
Pity we couldn’t keep Tammy....
-
25% posession.
-
90% possession. 90.
-
The only danger to Chelsea is that they get too complacent.
-
I think we need to do more overloads and traps.
-
I don’t think Smith and Terry have any idea how to escape from our predicament. We are ducked.
-
Let off
-
25% posession.
That can't be right.
We've had nothing like 25%!
-
Like the last time we went down. The Premier League and certainly all neutral fans simply will not miss us. This is truly abysmal.
-
Hourihane is just like the invisible man when supposedly challenging or tackling
-
25% posession.
That can't be right.
We've had nothing like 25%!
Nyland's had it all.
-
I think we will perform better away from home when the crowd is not on players back.
-
We had you there, ref...
-
There doesn’t seem to be any fight.
-
How can a team with the likes of Mings, Jack and McGinn be this consistently poor?
-
I think we will perform better away from home when the crowd is not on players back.
😂
It does put to bed the silly idea some people have that Villa fans too easily criticise the players and they're afraid of making mistakes at VP as a result.
-
How can a team with the likes of Mings, Jack and McGinn be this consistently poor?
Because we've got fuck all else.
-
Hourihane is just like the invisible man when supposedly challenging or tackling
He's really rubbish against team that can move and press in midfield. Basically needs only premier league teams he can play against and look o.k are Newcastle and Burnley.
-
How can a team with the likes of Mings, Jack and McGinn be this consistently poor?
There is a load of utter Blues around them to be fair
-
SCORRRRRRRRRRCHIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
-
Yes
-
Booom!
-
Fucking get in!
-
Goooaaalll... hopefully no fucking VAR.
-
Over you you PWS......
-
Bloody hell! Didn't see that coming.
-
Well fuck my old boots!!
-
My 1,000th post!
GOOOOOOOAAAAALLLL!!!
-
I don't think a lot of these players really care that much.
-
Yessssss
-
We done a goooooooaaaaaal!
-
How can a team with the likes of Mings, Jack and McGinn be this consistently poor?
There is a load of utter Blues around them to be fair
£200m odd spent...
-
Black lives matter scores...shock
-
Matt Targett is well named, isn't he?
Opposing teams certainly seem to take it literally.
-
Haha!
Chelsea fell for the plan, hook line and sinker!
-
I don't think a lot of these players really care that much.
Well timed
-
Hause !!!
-
Good lord
-
gettt innnn!!!
-
Smash and fucking grab
-
1-0. Slightly against the run of play ;). Luiz has been our best player so far for me.
-
Deserved lead, we've been all over them.
-
Thank fuck for that. Kortney you beauty!
-
Brilliant ball in from Luiz, very hard to defend against that.
-
Woo! fuckity woo!
-
Konsa booked
-
Well that’s ridiculous. Goal. We didn’t even celebrate here because VAR and that.
-
Call the cops!
-
Terry looked pretty gutted
-
Clinical goal, great delivery by Luiz.
-
Fuck yes!!! What a crap goal!
-
It doesn’t change things that much if for the next 45 minutes we keep on giving them the ball. They have more than enough to score multiple times.
-
Terry looked pretty gutted
Tosser
-
Bit of Black Sabbath after the goal. Remember when everyone flipped when we played music after a goal about a decade ago?
-
I think you can say that was ever so slightly "against the run of play" but fuck it, they all count!
-
3 mins stoppage for what?
-
Konsa booked
What for?
Oh, foul
-
3 minutes??
-
The last time you saw 3 mins added for first half injury time was....?
-
Terry looked pretty gutted
Tosser
Ha!
-
Konsa booked
What for?
Time wasting, the commentator said.
-
It doesn’t change things that much if for the next 45 minutes we keep on giving them the ball. They have more than enough to score multiple times.
Yeah they have lots of good options on the bench. That said this is the against the odds battling display we've lacked all season. Newcastle make this sort of performance and result against top 6/7 an art form.
-
First time we put players in the box
-
Up to 16th on the live table.
-
The rain is making more noise than the fake crowd.
-
HT. Fully deserved we've been all over them.
-
Up to 16th on the live table.
Spawny vile bastards.
-
1-0 flatters them.
-
Gona watch the great train robbery during half time just to keep it flowing
-
I am now going to get another gin and tonic, because the first one had the desired effect.
-
Yikes.
-
We've had more shots on target, we deserve to be ahead.
-
OK I am going for walk for about an hour.
-
Lured them into a sense of false security with our awfulness........ classic!
-
OK I am going for walk for about an hour.
Take your brolly
-
Deserved.
We need to keep them pinned in their own half again.
*cough*
-
When you're on top like we were you really need to be looking at getting two or three.
-
We've bossed that half.😉
-
What a weird first half. For long periods it not only looked like we weren't going to score but also that we didn't want to. And then one brilliant ball in and we're ahead. I would normally say I hope we don't drop deeper in the second half but that's not physically possible.
-
Gona watch the great train robbery during half time just to keep it flowing
Hahaha! This brought a smile to my face :)
-
HT. Fully deserved we've been all over them.
I know you're taking the piss but can you think of a good chance they've created for all their possession? Flip this game around and everyone on here would be moaning about us having no cutting edge and not working hard enough going forward.
For me it looks like the plan was to let them have the ball until they got into our 3rd and then to close them tight not let them get shots away and then to try to play off Davis on the counter. It isn't pretty and doesn't create many chances for us but it's worked so far because we've scored and had the best chance before that.
-
Ok Smith, please work this out.
-
The gulf in quality is huge, if we can sneak this it would be a massive confidence boost.
Not sure why El Ghazi is marking Giroud at the last corner, should be a big man surely.
-
Could have done with this ref against Watford.
Awful booking for Konsa, why not warn him instead of coming straight out with the card?
-

It was a great ball in especially as Grealish sent him a hospital pass.
-
I'd have Conner off for Marv , we need more legs out there at the moment
-
Luiz our best player by miles again so far
-
Cracking ball from Douglas for the goal.
-
Is there a new rule that's been passed that says that all Sky Sports presenters have to wear trainers with massive white soles?
-
Is it bad to bet on a Chelsea win too soften the blow when the inevitable happens.
-
Luiz our best player by miles again so far
I thought he was in the last game as well.
-

I thought the pass from Jack was perfectly weighted because it drew the defender in to try to steal the ball rather than him trying to block the cross.
-
Luiz our best player by miles again so far
Agreed. Played well so far, watch him get the half-time hook!! lol. Come on Villa. Defensively much better but keep working really hard to stop the ball from being crossed in.
-
3 minutes??
It's a couple of minutes for the drinks break, isn't it?
-
For me it looks like the plan was to let them have the ball until they got into our 3rd and then to close them tight not let them get shots away and then to try to play off Davis on the counter...
This would be fine if players were able to get up to pick up the second ball, but we're not supporting Davis. The players are neither quick enough or fit enough, it seems.
-
Great celebration from John Terry!! not. I thought I saw a sigh!
-
Also Hause is winning so many balls in the air especially from corners fair play to him having a good game so far.
-
In fairness he was probably waiting for a dubious VAR call, like I was.
-
HT. Fully deserved we've been all over them.

I think we've decided to constrict the space between the defence and midfield. They've only played through us once and that was Mount doing Hourihane.
We've gifted a lot of territory and ball and decided to gamble on dealing with the percentage ball in.
-
I'd have Conner off for Marv , we need more legs out there at the moment
He only got two as well ;)
-
Great celebration from John Terry!! not. I thought I saw a sigh!
It's not like he's hidden his love for Chelsea. He's hardly likely to run down the touchline jumping up and down.
-
Oh great, some Liverpool chat.
-
Even though we are 1-0 I don't understand the setup. If the tactics were to defend and defend and try to nick something later, why waste McGinn (for example) doing that? He'll be knackered when we need to push late game. Same with Jack or El Ghazi tbh.
The goal out of nowhere probably means 45mins of 15% possession now.
For once, bring this home Villa.
-
Is there a new rule that's been passed that says that all Sky Sports presenters have to wear trainers with massive white soles?
'White Soles Matter' ;)
-
Luiz our best player by miles again so far
Playing by himself in our midfield, the other two have been anonymous. Hourihanes effort to stop Mount was pathetic. Nakamba on for Houri please, might give Targett a bit more cover and by christ he needs it. Back to his standard hopeless defensive effort today.
I'd try AEG up front next to Davis who has been totally isolated with Jack in a free role behind them. Distance between our midfield and Davis has made ball retention impossible.
Can't imagine Giroud will appear for the second half, Hause has done well back there but Tammy will provide a threat they don't have currently.
Really poor performance so far but winning! Just hope Smith has the gumption to change our shape at half time.
-
At the start of lockdown I couldn't give a stuff about the rest of the season, now I feel physically sick and am a nervous wreck for the second half. Maybe David O'Lear......
-
It's a long way off but it would be lovely to hold on
-
Is it bad to bet on a Chelsea win too soften the blow when the inevitable happens.
Only if your name is Damo.
-
Regan just called it the Sir Doug Ellis stand on WM.
-
Chelsea still only 15/8 to win on the live odds, bookies actually been watching us this season.
-
Time appears to have stopped moving forward.
-
They are playing it out to the right wing all the time now
-
Pulisic coming on so that will stretch us a bit more. Ross Barkley on aswell.
-
I know I will jinx this but for all their pressure they have only had 3 shots and 1 on target
-
I know I will jinx this but for all their pressure they have only had 3 shots and 1 on target
10 and 2 according to the Beeb
-
KD off Samatta on
-
I know I will jinx this but for all their pressure they have only had 3 shots and 1 on target
Eh? BBC shows they've had 12 shots, 2 on target.
-
Decent run out by KD.
-
Samatta on for Davis.
Hopefully Ally has been doing laps round Bodymoor in last few days. Could barely run v Sheffield.
-
Was that Barkley having a blast on an asthma inhalor?
-
Is Lampard going bald ?
-
I know I will jinx this but for all their pressure they have only had 3 shots and 1 on target
Eh? BBC shows they've had 12 shots, 2 on target.
I was looking at Sky stats but yes I do recall Nyland making 2 saves
-
Is Lampard going bald ?
Yes. I'm extremely alive to the baldness or lack thereof in men of my age. For some reason.
-
1-1. Pulisic.
-
1-1
-
Bugger.
-
Here we go then.
-
And there we go.
-
Just.A.Matter.Of.Time
-
Oh well, it was nice while it lasted.
-
Shite
-
Fuck sake Villa. Fuck sake.
-
Shocking defending.
-
That was coming. Just fucking letting them cross at will.
-
Maybe spot an unmarked man and challenge him McGinn...
-
1-2
-
Is Lampard going bald ?
Everyone does eventually
-
Got what we deserved.
-
FFS that's why we're probably going down. Chelsea make two subs, put on more direct forward players and we simply fold.
-
Such poor defending. We need to actually get on the ball and pose a threat.
-
Gave him half an hour to turn in the penalty area.
-
Giroud. FFS!
-
They've been hitting balls in from that right side all second half. Put a defender out there.
-
I’m done with this. All of it so inevitable
-
Lmao
-
We should have binned Smith when we had the chance. Miserable.
-
Anyone who thinks we are staying up must have happy pills....
-
FFS that's why we're probably going down.
Not probably
-
Absolute shite.
-
Fuck off
-
Cricket score beckons
-
A pathetic performance is now getting what it deserves
-
Just remembered I put a tenner on Chelsea to win by 70th minute mark. 25/1.
-
1-2 embarrassing.
-
And there you go.
-
This is so Villa.
-
Normal service resumed.
-
And Smiths contribution to help the team ?
Fuck all.
-
Beyond pathetic.
You just knew it. Some of these players have the backbone of a jellyfish.
-
We should have binned Smith when we had the chance. Miserable.
This.
-
Crying out for fresh legs in midfield.
-
Such a cowardly approach to the second half. We've only got ourselves to blame there.
-
Just remembered I put a tenner on Chelsea to win by 70th minute mark. 25/1.
Good for you
-
Floodgates time
-
We should have binned Smith when we had the chance. Miserable.
This.
This. Please please bin him in the summer - he has got to go
-
Dean Smith is just shit at this level. Useless
-
We should have binned Smith when we had the chance. Miserable.
Yep. He was very close to it before lockdown. I’d sack him after this.
-
Christ that was shite.
-
Who said 1-4? Looking about right now
-
... and that's enough of that. We offer absolutely nothing up front and now the defense has switched off. I'm off to enjoy my Sunday evening.
-
Who said 1-4? Looking about right now
I said right after our goal that us scoring didn’t make much of a difference. If we play as we had been it was a matter of time before they scored a few.
-
Really wouldn't have started McGinn. He's well short for 90 minutes. Think it's better to give him 30 minute cameos to build up.
-
Oh well, it was nice watching premier league football in person for a few games.
-
TSM would be proud of having double full backs.
-
Fuck me why can’t we retain the bloody ball.
-
A pathetic performance is now getting what it deserves
And our attacking players are probably all out of puff from chasing shadows all day. Can't see Trez or Jota turning this one around. May as well bring Borja on (tbh i totally forgot we signed him) and pump long.
-
Nakamba should've be on ten minutes ago.
-
We get into an undeserved lead and just continue the same hopeless approach. Sit 4 deep and narrow with 5 deep and narrow in front. Let them have the ball and cross at will and hope that one of the leakiest defences can keep a clean sheet.
-
Dean smiths lucky there’s no fans I reckon they would be on his back now.
-
We should have binned Smith when we had the chance. Miserable.
Agreed. He is poor. His signings are poor, and the latter should do for him.
-
Chance
-
You can't play football like we do and expect anything other than failure.
Dreadful.
-
Three months to prepare for these fixtures and we're conceding 90% possession.
-
Who said 1-4? Looking about right now
Me. I’m not proud.
-
We're not allowed to enjoy ourselves.
-
Dean just doesn't seem to know how to see out a game when we're in the lead, or get back into a game when we're behind. Which is a bit useless.
-
Body language suggests we’re done for.
Literally no leadership anywhere.
-
Hayes should have done better there. It’d be remarkable if we get anything from here.
-
A bit late for Nakamba now.
-
We saw the first half and we needed to get some legs in midfield.
As usual he stands on the sidelines and watches passively.
-
Why are we playing Grealish in stupid positions?
-
Come on Trez. Let's have a bit of your magic.
-
We're absolutely insipid. Nowhere near enough urgency and effort. Smith has to answer for that. He appears to be well out of his depth at this level. Oh great, Trezeguet coming on, may as well switch off.
-
So many unlikeable players.
Almost everything has come down our left. Targett....deary me. Woeful.
El Ghazi is a poor player, swanning about.
I can't say anything negative about Hourihane without some weird poster whose name I forget, stalking me and telling me off.
The list is endless. Put it this way, I wouldn't miss many of them if we went down and they fucked off.
-
You can't play football like we do and expect anything other than failure.
Dreadful.
Remember when they said Smith plays "attacking" football, lolz.
-
Nakamba should've be on ten minutes ago.
But when we're chasing the game Nakamba should be nowhere near the pitch - he offers zero going forwards.
I'm bemused by Smith's changes.
-
It’s all so fucking predicable.
We are so fucking predictable.
Smith is so fucking predictable.
-
Sighs heavily.
-
Fuck me. He does know he can mix the tactics/formation up during a match doesn’t he?
I knew the second he took Davies off for Samatta we’d lose this. Having trouble to get the ball to stick up there with Davies... NO chance with Ally.
Agree with previous posters that Smith should have been potted before now, too late now, but definitely got to go at end of season no matter which division we’re in.
Garbage
-
It's amazing that we managed to spend well over a hundred million to buy precisely zero players that frighten the opposition. Sure I saw the Chelsea full back light a cigarette when he saw Trezeguet was coming on.
-
One point in the last six games. Do what's best for the Villa, Dean. Go.
-
That was the worst "attack" I have ever seen.
-
16% possession at home.
-
The owners say they want us competing with the likes of Chelsea for champions league. Its laughable.
-
Well it’s getting very easy to predict team selection, tactics and substitutions so not going to get too upset. You can see it coming from when the team sheet is announced.
-
if this stays the same, that's 6 defeats and one draw in the last 7 games. Absolute rubbish.
-
We carry so little threat, I can't see how we are going to win the 4 games or however many it is that we need to stay up. It's all very well playing like this when the onus is on the opposition to attack, but as soon as we go behind it falls apart.
-
Why are we playing Grealish in stupid positions?
Why is Smith still here?
-
You just never expect us to score. Two in a game would be like winning the lottery twice in a row.
-
This is bad as anything Lambert, TSM or Bruce served up.
Awful, awful, awful.
-
Absolutely outclassed. We’re down.
-
Fuck me. He does know he can mix the tactics/formation up during a match doesn’t he?
I knew the second he took Davies off for Samatta we’d lose this. Having trouble to get the ball to stick up there with Davies... NO chance with Ally.
Agreed.
-
This is properly one sided and has been for all 77 mins so far.
-
We've got no idea what to do now have we? Just got to take some risks and push the FBs up a bit more even if it means we'll concede a third.
Probably says a lot of our squad that AEM is probably the best bet off the bench. Will get a few crosses in that Samatta may get on the end of.
-
Our substitutions are a bit like taking off Laurel and Hardy, to bring on Cannon and Ball.
-
It's amazing that we managed to spend well over a hundred million to buy precisely zero players that frighten the opposition. Sure I saw the Chelsea full back light a cigarette when he saw Trezeguet was coming on.
The reality is that £100m wassn't enough. Spending three times that is what is needed to stay up and then hope FFP won't fuck you.
Also having a manager that doesn't insist on one up front constantly, backed up by a weak midfield that offers no cover to a poor defence.
-
Here comes Abraham for the clinching goal(s)
-
Any manager should be ashamed to see his team ‘play’ like this.
-
No risks anywhere?
Are we just seeing this one out?
This is as weak and feeble as 2015/16.
-
Really disappointing performance. Chelsea are good but we are miles away.
-
Utterly shit players and a clueless management team clearly are not making for a winning combination
-
This is bad as anything Lambert, TSM or Bruce served up.
Awful, awful, awful.
I agree, it's absolutely dismal stuff. No cohesion, no passing, no identifiable tactics. We were getting pissed all over with this 4-3-3 before lockdown, and we're getting done again. Unacceptable from Smith.
-
To be honest, at half time I'd have taken the draw.
-
It's says it all that I didn't think we were in the game when we were ahead.....
-
So what nonsense is Dean going to come out with afterwards?
-
This is bad as anything Lambert, TSM or Bruce served up.
Awful, awful, awful.
I agree, it's absolutely dismal stuff. No cohesion, no passing, no identifiable tactics. We were getting pissed all over with this 4-3-3 before lockdown, and we're getting done again. Unacceptable from Smith.
That’s Smith’s main problem, he’s not learning at all. It’s like tunnel vision.
-
This is a barely competent Championship side.
-
So what nonsense is Dean going to come out with afterwards?
God knows. I can't recall any ref's decision he can blame.
-
Utterly shit players and a clueless management team clearly are not making for a winning combination
Really mad that the management team weren't fired when the football was suspended at least.
-
How does a free kick for us lead to a corner for them within 5 seconds?
-
My annoyance at how the commentator pronounces Kante has risen since we went behind.
-
This is a barely competent Championship side.
Does this team deserve to be in this division?
-
It's amazing that we managed to spend well over a hundred million to buy precisely zero players that frighten the opposition. Sure I saw the Chelsea full back light a cigarette when he saw Trezeguet was coming on.

100m would've been enough if we'd signed some experience. Those players don't all cost 50m. Really don't understand why we basically ruled out any season loan either, I bet Purslow is regretting those comments now especially given we signed three loan players in January.
-
Smith is unfortunately a very shit manager.
-
Chelsea know they don't need to break sweat.
The points are in the bag.
-
While the scoreline isn't massively surprising the 'performance' has been very disappointing.
-
Our free kick leads directly to a Chelsea corner.
-
This is bad as anything Lambert, TSM or Bruce served up.
Awful, awful, awful.
I agree, it's absolutely dismal stuff. No cohesion, no passing, no identifiable tactics. We were getting pissed all over with this 4-3-3 before lockdown, and we're getting done again. Unacceptable from Smith.
It would be interesting to see, after watching this, who could defend Smith and actually want him as manager. It's not like this performance is a one off,.either.
We don't have anyone to motivate or inspire. Garbage.
-
This is a barely competent Championship side.
Does this team deserve to be in this division?
Take grealish out of the picture and there’s not much between us and the last team that took us down.
-
Utterly shit players and a clueless management team clearly are not making for a winning combination
Really mad that the management team weren't fired when the football was suspended at least.
Are you serious???
-
So what nonsense is Dean going to come out with afterwards?
Same as Spurs. Arsenal. Liverpool. Man. City. "These games won't define whether we stay up or not."
Oh yes they will Dean.
-
This is a barely competent Championship side.
Does this team deserve to be in this division?
Of course it does. Whether it's good enough to stay in it is a different matter.
-
I said at Christmas, results are what mattered and even though we’ve had 3 months off, it’s Groundhog Day. He’s a top bloke but he is league one level at best. Maybe championship. He earned a chance in prem due to the playoffs success. However keeping him has damned us.
-
We are McGinn and Grealish United. If they aren't brilliant, we lose. Opposition know that if you stop them, you stop Villa.
-
Any chance we could try to exert even a tiny amount of pressure for the last 6 minutes? We are losing, and still in the bottom three, in case the manager and players had forgotten.
-
It's amazing that we managed to spend well over a hundred million to buy precisely zero players that frighten the opposition. Sure I saw the Chelsea full back light a cigarette when he saw Trezeguet was coming on.

Plenty of teams have stayed up spending less
Sheff Utd this season
not how much you spend it what you spend it on
-
Villa play like Targett looks.
-
While the scoreline isn't massively surprising the 'performance' has been very disappointing.
Bugger all zip in both game so far, ignoring the results. We should have come flying out of the traps and at least had a bloody go.

Clinging onto a one goal deficit for dear life.
-
It was a risk, it's not over yet of course but it looks like the risk has not come off....
-
At least we're all over them and they are clinging on as we throw the kitchen sink at them...
-
Shots in now.
-
DS having these conferences calls with Terrry and O'Kelly really wind me up aswell. Shows a lack of confidence from him at this level imo.
You really don't need a five minute talk about whether you should put a striker or attacking midfielder should come on in a game you're losing.
Jota on for McGinn.
-
Smith just standing there. He should be going ballistic.
-
I am pig sick of us having the ball, on either of the wings, in their half and one touch later it’s either with our keeper or centre half in our D. We deserve nothing. Oh crikey Jota’s on. And nearly scores.
-
We are McGinn and Grealish United. If they aren't brilliant, we lose. Opposition know that if you stop them, you stop Villa.
We're really missing them both today.
-
Utterly useless.
-
Jota has done more with one kick than McGinn has in two games.
-
Fuck it I’ve put Shaun the sheep Farmageddon on instead. I’ve had enough of that shower of useless twats for today.
-
No fucking way are we scoring from this corner.
-
Yes, Alan.. That WAS the chance you were talking about.
-
The gulf in class is absolutely vast, obviously. But I'm surprised that Lampard is looking every inch a Premier League manager while Dean looks like a man who over-achieved getting into the Championship.

What the flock?
-
Smith doesn't seem to believe we are really good enough to be playing in this division, and it's visibly rubbing off on the players.
-
McGinn has been much pretty much a waste of a shirt in both games so far. Understandable of course but probably gonna relegate us.
-
Alan Smith isn't half talking some shite.
-
Dean at his motivational and inspirational best.
-
Why he has started these two games with Davis as a lone striker is inexplicable.
-
Alan Smith isn't half talking some shite.
Any relation to dean then?
-
Why wasnt Nyland up for that corner

Yes..it's perplexing as well, as he was nearly ready to come back 3 months ago.
-
Smith out, just get rid today please.
-
5 minutes.
-
How does a free kick for us lead to a corner for them within 5 seconds?
God knows, there are at least 4728 things that wind me up about Villa, but right up there is the fact that whenever we clear a ball, it either lands straight to an opposition player or just bounces randomly off one of ours. But whenever our opponents clear it, hoof it, hack it, it invariably lands to one of theirs, usually with no Villa player anywhere to be seen.
It can't be accidental. It says to me we do not train how to clear, and where to clear, to set up counterattacks. Or at least, to relieve the pressure. And we do not train where to position ourselves to maximise getting 2nd phase ball.
-
I can accept that they're better than us, I can't accept how comfortable we've allowed them to be on the ball. Willian and Kante could have played in their slippers for all the menace from the Villa.
-
FFS!

My mate produced Shaun the Sheep. Notts County fan. My mate, not Shaun the Sheep.
-
Where's Guilbert?
-
What the fuck is Alan Smith on about.
Villa have managed to score again, keeping that run up? Eh?
-
Given how fucked our lot look, I'm not sure they'll survive on Wednesday when it's 28C out there!!

Yes but 5c in Newcastle.
-
A "little accidental clip"? Fuck right off.
-
Newcastle is last chance for me. We need some big performances from our few good players.

-
FT
-
Utter wank.
-
It’s like Carry on Up the Khyber. Shit is happening and we are sat there having tea and cakes without the slightest urgency to sort things out. Where’s the fight?

No idea but he hates Leeds, the sheep shaggers.
