If he had made four changes he would be getting slaughtered by the "doesn't know his best team" moaners. We were generally alright, but lacking a bit of spark, on Wednesday. No reason whatsoever to make wholesale changes, or be whinging before a ball is kicked if we didn't make changes for the sake of it.

Can understand logic in unchanged team as we played o.k on Wednesday but worried we'd hit the wall on the hour mark and the subs really didn't help us.

Surprised at some of the Chelsea selections. Reece James was brilliant at RB against us in the away game and the front 3 is pretty slow compared to what they could've selected. Loftus Cheek has also barely played in 18 months.

However Pedro, Tammy and Pulisic will give them plenty of energy from hour mark so that is a concern.

I can see the pros and cons really. Makes sense to keep the same backline given we finally kept a clean sheet. However I'd have left McGinn out for this one and put in Nakamba. Saved SJM for Newcastle as he really struggled to get into the game on Wednesday so think at this point he can be more effective off the bench.

Probably will be at 70th minute mark. We need to be winning.

This was never going to be the game to go gung ho.  As others have said, while it's far from ideal, a point isn't a total disaster.  We looked reasonably solid, if uninspired, on Wednesday and that's what's required today.  What we absolutely do not need is to go down 3-0.

And we don’t need wholesale changes. I thought Konsa was ineffective at RB. Much rather see Guilbert who was training and appears to be fit or Elmo. More balance. And play Samatta instead of AEG. But what’s maddening is that Dean Smith will play the same way. We’ve seen it all season. And we will lump the ball up to KD all game and a top side like Chelsea will hit us on the counter if he can’t make it stick and bring other players into the game

I wouldn't worry too much about either of those, Arsenal look like they just can't be bothered with the games and Sheff U were fine unitl they lost Egan but now they're playing a back 4 with players who are used to playing in a 5 and there's big gaps all over the place.

I really can't see the 11 they've started with coming close to anything like that scoreline. Chelsea really don't score many away goals. It does look like a game however where the 5 subs could make huge difference as their bench is in a different league to what we have as options.

Guilbert and Elmo are both more attacking and less likely to start against an established top side like Chelsea. There is no evidence that Samatta will make a winger, they're too good to experiment against, and we need someone who will track back against these. Samatta for KD is the only change I'd have considered, but no harm in having him available to bring on if we need him.

I think you would be moaning whatever team we put out. Sticking with a team that played well is hardly the most controversial tactic.

Without wanting this to turn into a 'better fan than yow' style argument I do think some people have decided Smith is done and therefore they are hyper critical of him regardless of what he does. I don't mean that as a criticism because it's exactly where I was with Bruce for most of the time he was here so I totally understand it.

If he moves to Man. United he'll be playing out wide given what they have centrally.

I get what people are saying but he's contributed many goals and assists from a wide position this year. He played as a pure 10 in August and September yet we struggled to win and even score and Jack was struggling for his best form aswell.

It would also mean Trez or Jota probably starting aswell if we moved him back centrally.

Saying that I'd like to see him in a free role behind a front two of Samatta and Davis. I think we'll see that in the near future as last throw of the dice and it could very well work.

If we don’t win/get a performance today, Smith needs a roasting. A Steve Bruce Newcastle side have just smashed the team we stole a point off midweek (who are also a game further on fitness wise than Newcastle).

Glaringly obvious that Grealish is wasted out on left, and both Keinan and Ally offer nothing going solo up top. Should have played both up top today.

Does he actually play wide? I don't care where his name is on the teamsheet, is he actually out getting chalk on his boots?  Looking on the heatmap from wednesday I see no evidence that he doesn't have as free role to wander and find space but with a responsibility to look after the opposition right back when we're defending.

Fair point. But regardless of what happened, on paper, we drew 0-0 against Sheffield Utd at home, one of our close competitors (managed by a guy we slaughtered!) have just played them a few days later, and won 3-0.
God, I want him to succeed as much as any villa fan, but he’s come back, and second game in, doesn’t appear to have learnt anything.... same team, replaced like for like off the bench in the first game (65th minute standard affair).
Hope he turns it around, but fucking hell, he’s not helping himself really?!
Biggest highlight from the Sheffield game was Luiz’s performance. Hopefully that continues today with the addition of a few others.

Do many players get given no defensive responsilibities though? My point is that I don't think there's any evidence that it has limited his ability to find space nad make things happen.

"A win for the hosts would ensure Villa become just the second team in top-flight history to win a match on all seven days of the week within a season, emulating Tottenham in 1986-87."

From the Beeb

"A win for the hosts would ensure Villa become just the second team in top-flight history to win a match on all seven days of the week within a season, emulating Tottenham in 1986-87."

Pretty staggering seeing we've only won 6 games so far.
So a win on a Sunday and we run out of days☹️

Watching on Now TV...is there any way to turn off the fake crowd noise as it’s way too loud and barely here commentary? I’m selected Sky Sports Main Event but does it matter which of the many Sky Sports channels is selected.
I think Sky sports Premiere League doesn't have the  crowd noise
Nice one. They just so happened to put up a scrolling banner saying SSPL doesn’t have the crowd noise. I’ll give this a go now 👍

That’s quite worrying knowing tried and tested has us second bottom some points away from safety.

They've had the possession but haven't created anything so far. What I'd like to see is McGinn or Hourihane getting 10 yards further forward when we're defending and not giving them a huge gap to pass into in midfield.

I'd be looking at changing it at half time if not before.  Yes, they've only had one shot on target (good save from Nyland) but...  We haven't had the ball yet have we?  We won't keep it 0-0 by defending on sth 18 yard area.  One of those games where you need the crowd.

HT. Fully deserved we've been all over them.

I know you're taking the piss but can you think of a good chance they've created for all their possession? Flip this game around and everyone on here would be moaning about us having no cutting edge and not working hard enough going forward.

For me it looks like the plan was to let them have the ball until they got into our 3rd and then to close them tight not let them get shots away and then to try to play off Davis on the counter. It isn't pretty and doesn't create many chances for us but it's worked so far because we've scored and had the best chance before that.

I think we've decided to constrict the space between the defence and midfield. They've only played through us once and that was Mount doing Hourihane.

We've gifted a lot of territory and ball and decided to gamble on dealing with the percentage ball in.

Even though we are 1-0 I don't understand the setup. If the tactics were to defend and defend and try to nick something later, why waste McGinn (for example) doing that? He'll be knackered when we need to push late game. Same with Jack or El Ghazi tbh.

The goal out of nowhere probably means 45mins of 15% possession now.

For once, bring this home Villa.

Luiz our best player by miles again so far

Playing by himself in our midfield, the other two have been anonymous. Hourihanes effort to stop Mount was pathetic. Nakamba on for Houri please, might give Targett a bit more cover and by christ he needs it. Back to his standard hopeless defensive effort today.

I'd try AEG up front next to Davis who has been totally isolated with Jack in a free role behind them. Distance between our midfield and Davis has made ball retention impossible.

Can't imagine Giroud will appear for the second half, Hause has done well back there but Tammy will provide a threat they don't have currently.

Really poor performance so far but winning! Just hope Smith has the gumption to change our shape at half time.

Eh?  BBC shows they've had 12 shots, 2 on target.

100m would've been enough if we'd signed some experience. Those players don't all cost 50m. Really don't understand why we basically ruled out any season loan either, I bet Purslow is regretting those comments now especially given we signed three loan players in January.

I agree, it's absolutely dismal stuff.  No cohesion, no passing, no identifiable tactics. We were getting pissed all over with this 4-3-3 before lockdown, and we're getting done again.  Unacceptable from Smith.

It would be interesting to see, after watching this, who could defend Smith and actually want him as manager. It's not like this performance is a one off,.either.

We don't have anyone to motivate or inspire. Garbage.

This is a barely competent Championship side.

Does this team deserve to be in this division?

Take grealish out of the picture and there’s not much between us and the last team that took us down.

Utterly shit players and a clueless management team clearly are not making for a winning combination

Really mad that the management team weren't fired when the football was suspended at least.

Are you serious???

So what nonsense is Dean going to come out with afterwards?

Same as Spurs. Arsenal. Liverpool. Man. City. "These games won't define whether we stay up or not."

Oh yes they will Dean.

Of course it does. Whether it's good enough to stay in it is a different matter.

I said at Christmas, results are what mattered and even though we’ve had 3 months off, it’s Groundhog Day. He’s a top bloke but he is league one level at best. Maybe championship. He earned a chance in prem due to the playoffs success. However keeping him has damned us.

We are McGinn and Grealish United. If they aren't brilliant, we lose. Opposition know that if you stop them, you stop Villa.

Any chance we could try to exert even a tiny amount of pressure for the last 6 minutes?  We are losing, and still in the bottom three, in case the manager and players had forgotten.

It's amazing that we managed to spend well over a hundred million to buy precisely zero players that frighten the opposition. Sure I saw the Chelsea full back light a cigarette when he saw Trezeguet was coming on.

The reality is that £100m wassn't enough. Spending three times that is what is needed to stay up and then hope FFP won't fuck you.

Also having a manager that doesn't insist on one up front constantly, backed up by a weak midfield that offers no cover to a poor defence.

Plenty of teams have stayed up spending less
Sheff Utd this season

not how much you spend it what you spend it on

While the scoreline isn't massively surprising the 'performance' has been very disappointing.

Bugger all zip in both game so far, ignoring the results. We should have come flying out of the traps and at least had a bloody go.

DS having these conferences calls with Terrry and O'Kelly really wind me up aswell. Shows a lack of confidence from him at this level imo.

You really don't need a five minute talk about whether you should put a striker or attacking midfielder should come on in a game you're losing.

Jota on for McGinn.

How does a free kick for us lead to a corner for them within 5 seconds?

God knows, there are at least 4728 things that wind me up about Villa, but right up there is the fact that whenever we clear a ball, it either lands straight to an opposition player or just bounces randomly off one of ours. But whenever our opponents clear it, hoof it, hack it, it invariably lands to one of theirs, usually with no Villa player anywhere to be seen.

It can't be accidental. It says to me we do not train how to clear, and where to clear, to set up counterattacks. Or at least, to relieve the pressure. And we do not train where to position ourselves to maximise getting 2nd phase ball.

I can accept that they're better than us, I can't accept how comfortable we've allowed them to be on the ball. Willian and Kante could have played in their slippers for all the menace from the Villa.
