Title: Classic Villa games on Youtube.
Post by: SoccerHQ on March 14, 2020, 03:55:06 PM
I've mentioned a few times the excellent Villaboy YT channel full of clips from the past and a few full length matches. Just the other day I watched Villa 5 Wimbledon 0 from December 1996 which was really interesting to see the Crazy gang style again (match was actually reasonably close for first half hour).

Think there's also AVFC clips which is more clips of games from season reviews and only 1-2 full games.

Are there any other options for the lean weekends ahead from undiscovered channels that people have come across? I do come across the odd other full match from fans of other clubs (the Villa-Liverpool full match from August 2007 is on there when Gerrard dived for the late free kick) but obviously more defeats and games I really wouldn't want to watch.

Its a shame the draconian laws from premier league stop more uploads, would love to watch the full 90 minutes from winning at Old Trafford in 2009 or the Emirates in August 2013 again. Really tough to even find long highlights of the first match.

VillaBoy is about the best one there is. All the rest get taken down post 1992 or whenever it was that Sky got their monopoly.

I've just found www.footballia.net - it's got a fair few of our games on it. Juventus, Bordeaux, Bilbao, Athletico Madrid, Celta for starters...

That's a cracking site, Seb. I'm going to dig out the Barcelona 5-4 Atlético (1997) game. Probably my favourite ever non-Villa game.

I just watched the 80/81 sesason review that Villa Boy posted. Such golden memories, almost 40 years ago but it feels like yesterday.

We should think about setting up some match threads of old games and/or season reviews now that football is suspended. H&V without any football isn't the same. How about once or twice a week a game is chosen with a link; a time given for people to start watching it and a match thread started?

I tried that with the Chelsea game. Minimal interest.

Ah interesting. I looked at that site yesterday but only premier league section which was a repeat of what you can find elsewhere. Didn't look at other leagues so interested to see what I come across. Cheers.

There was some crackers on one of the old forums, all time classic was Sunderland away in October 2009 but think that was lost.

On this board the old match and post match threads stretch back to West Ham in August 2010 so that's another thing to blame O'Neill leaving for as his departure seemingly ended the old forum.

The other day on YouTube I watched the fifteen minutes MOTD highlights of one of my favourite Villa games I was at. Villa 4 Albion 3, first game of the season in 1983. Ken McNaught making his Albion debut days after leaving Villa for Albion. Brendan Ormsby who took over his number five shirt scoring the winning goal. I remember Central Sport showing a slightly awkward interview in the studio with best mates Peter Withe and Ken McNaught the night before the match.

Peter Withe  what a player

Great player, great attitude, great battler. Definately someone you would want on your side in the dressing room and in games. Also a great psychologist if his  team talk about never having lost to Middlesbrough was a true story when the Villa players were saying Boro were a bogey team before the last home game of the season in 1981. Apparently in truth he had no recollection of whether he had ever lost to Boro or not.

Yes I remember him saying that in a Villa history video. One of my favourite players, he was superb

22 years since the Atletico Madrid second leg, will give that a watch later today.

A glorious failure but that second half was amazing, can still remember Hendrie having the shot being tipped around the post with five minutes left.

Collymore's thunderbolt... Those first 10 weeks under Gregory are one of my favourite periods of Villa performances. Savo, Yorke, Collymore, Joachim, Hendrie and Taylor all shone as did a classy youngster called Barry towards the end of the season.

One of my all-time favourite games. Cannot believe it's 22 years, it seems so fresh in my memory. Such a pity we couldn't get the third goal to progress.

We more than deserved the win on the night but missed too many chances -Yorke, of all people being the chief offender.

We also conceded surely one of the most bizarre goals seen at VP for the decisive away goal.

And their goal in Madrid was from a massive dive. We were the better side over the two legs.

Bozzie and Ugo got in a tangle. Pretty identical to a goal conceded earlier that season v Derby at home. Caminero still finished it well. They hardly got out of their own half for the rest of the game (and that was a pretty decent Atletico Madrid 11)

I remember Bozzie being booked for time wasting while trying to avoid the stuff being thrown at him by the crowd in the away leg.

I recall Joachim playing on the right midfield in the away leg and their penalty being well dodgy.

I remember Yorke hitting the post in the home leg?

Peter Withe  what a player

Didn't Brian Clough once say that the one player he regretted selling was Peter Withe?

Just watched the 70-71 LC semi-final on Villa Boy's channel. A friend of mine who's an old school Man U fan and followed them home and away in the late 60s and 70s reckons the semi-final at Villa Park was the best away atmosphere he's experienced. Must have been rocking given the fallow years of the 60s.

Cloughie's 'worst of' bits could vary.

He started off by saying the worst thing he ever did was to resign from his job at Derby.

He also said that the worst ever thing he did was to let Peter Withe leave Forest in 1978. He then said that the second worst thing he did was to not bring Withe back!

He also said the worst thing he ever did was sell Archie Gemmill to Small Heath. He sold Garry Birtles and bought him back two years later. He sold Ian Bowyer to Sunderland, realised he had made a mistake and bought him back fifteen games later. He bought and sold Trevor Christie and Gary Megson within a matter of weeks in 1984 (Christie played a handful of games and Megson didn't get a game as Clough reckoned he couldn't trap a bag of cement in training) and bought and sold John Sheridan within a matter of weeks without ever playing him in 1989. 'Provided You Don't Kiss Me' by Duncan Hamilton is an excellent football book written by the journalist who covered Forest for the local paper all the way through the Clough years.

I don't think Archie ever forgave Clough for not picking him for the 1979 European Cup Final.

Gemmill and O'Neill both declared themselves fit for the game -Clough simply didn't believe them!!

I believe Forest was supposedly run by a committee and Clough was very politically clever and manipulative in making sure the head of the committee was someone he could manipulate. Side with Clough and you would stay in charge of the committee, cross him and he would manoeuvre you out of power. He succeeded up until his drinking got out of hand at the end of his reign and he gave his critics on the board too much ammunition to use against him.

Clough got rid of some board members he and Taylor didn't like in the early years at Derby.

Years later, it came back to bite 'em.

My favourite.

If I could request two games they'd be our home games against Liverpool in 1996-97 and 1997-98. We won both games  pretty convincingly and the weird thing is there isn't a hint of either ever shows up on YouTube or other sources. The latter was John Gregory's first game as manager.

Surprised the first Liverpool game isn't on there, that was a live Sky Sunday game. Remember watching it at Penns Hall hotel. Second one has long highlights on TJS Sports.

Here's one we lost:

The first was one of my favourite Villa wins, because they always seemed to stick two or three past us without reply in those years, even if they didn't play well enough for those scorelines. Add a Liverpool supporting best mate into the mix and you had a very happy fifteen year old that Sunday afternoon.
