Both the R+A and USGA agree that distances players are hitting the ball nowadays are becoming detrimental to the game and plan future guidelines on technology.
Will be interesting to see if its limitations on future tech, or a full review of current equipment.
Its a catch 22 in my opinion. It has become ridiculous some of the distances. 480 yard par 4s that some players leave themselves half a wedge into is often a show of brute force over skill. On the other hand, golf needs to attract younger players and seeing the likes of Rory, Koepka, DJ etc crushing the ball is exciting.
My own personal game probably won't suffer too much with my 250 yard drives!!

Sky Sports breaking news Royal Troon to host the Open in 2023, it's in my diary :)

Next week's Kenya open postponed by their government amid coronavirus fears.

Well done Tyrrell Hatton on winning The Arnold Palmer International by one shot, his first win on the PGA tour.

Well done Tyrrell Hatton on winning The Arnold Palmer International by one shot, his first win on the PGA tour.
Great to see. I love how angry Tyrrell gets with himself as I can relate to the frustration playing the game (albeit at an astronomically worse level than he!!!)
Also great to see a tournament won at 4 under par. Makes a welcome change from the birdie fests seen on the PGA tour.

After today no fans will be allowed into The Players Championship in Florida.
-
Now cancelled
-
The Masters has just been called off
-
Yeah but postponed not cancelled.
-
The Open, Britain's greatest annual summer sporting event, sadly cancelled not postponed, the R & A have been unable to fit it in at another date. Next year's Open will still be played at St George's, meaning the R&A can keep the 150th Open at St Andrews in 2022.

Can someone who knows golf better than me explain why they only play The Open at the seaside? Why isn't The Belfry allowed to bid? Seems very unfair.

It a links tournament.
-
Tradition I guess.
The first Open was at Prestwick GC a links course, so I imagine it's just stayed the same. The golf authorities have a rota and those on the rota host the event every ten years or so. St Andrews has it every 5 if I remember. Links courses are very open in nature, very little trees or indeed none, and the weather can play a huge part.
Links golf itself does bring luck into the game a bit, the draw can influence how easy or hard the conditions are for a player. The last Open at St Andrews being an example. The wind on Saturday meant play was halted, but those that had been out found it really tough and posted high scores.
Links golf is meant to be how the game 'showed be played', one for the purists. I can take it or leave it myself. Having played the Old Course at St Andrews, it was fun but aside from 1st, 17th and 18th it was pretty average.

The PGA of America announces PGA Championship now schedule to take place on 6-9 August.

Good news for golf fans the PGA tour resumes today in Texas, Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka among the starters.
-
Good effort from Tyrell Hatton finishing joint 3rd in South Carolina with a final round of 66.
-
Bryson DeChambeau wins the latest PGA tournament in Detroit, his drives were averaging 350 yards, which is quite amazing. Well done to Tyrrell Hatton finishing joint 4th and also good to see Danny Willett also on the score.
-
Sadly, but not unexpected, Ryder Cup postponed until 2021, good news is still 3 Majors to look forward to.
-
On his first return after lockdown Woods just makes the cut at Jack's tournament
-
Jon Rahm replaces Rory McIlroy as World no 1 following his win at Jack's tournament. Well done to Matt Fitzpatrick finishing 3rd and Matt Wallace 4th.
-
Starting today The European Tour returns to the West Midlands, the first time for a while, The Forest of Arden is the venue for the tournament.
-
Well done to 23 year old Englishman Sam Horsfield on his first European Tour win.
-
First major of the year starts today, The PGA Championship at San Francisco. Not looking good for an English win Fleetwood and Fitzpatrick the best bets both at 45/1.
Favourites Thomas, Koepka 10/1, Rahm, McIlroy 14, Scauffele, DeChambeau 16, Johnson 22.
Woods is 35/1.

A 64 puts Tommy Fleetwood 2 behind the leader alongside Brooks Koepka and Justin Rose, with Paul Casey a further shot behind on 5 under.
-
Following a superb 65 Dustin Johnson leads on 9 under going into the final round. Scottie Scheffler and Cameron Champ 1 behind and Paul Casey and Brooks Koepka a further shot back. Casey has never won a major, in fact I can't ever remember him even being in contention for one and at the age of 43 it's unlikely to happen now. Looks like it'll probably be between Johnson and Koepka, looking forward to tonight.
-
It'd be nice if Casey or Fleetwood got their first rather then Koepka again.
-
What a great final round of 64 from Collin Morikawa to give him his first major, the eagle 2 he got on the par 4 16th was something special. Full credit to Paul Casey he played some superb golf to finish 2nd, just beaten by the better man.
It was some of the best golf I've seen for a while, at one time there were 6 players sharing the lead, certainly worth staying up for, finishing about 2 in the morning.
-
I was all set to watch it through to the end but the frequency and length of the ad breaks drove me up the wall and I bogged off to bed. Great to see so many players in contention on the final day though. Also good to see Koepka stuff it up.
-
I stuck with it once I was fully convinced Bryson de Knobhead wasn’t gonna win - there are so many American golfers that I truly cannot stand Mickelson, BdC, Blubba, Koepka & Keegan Bradley being top of the list so it was good that none of them won.
That tee shot on 16 was worthy of taking Morikawa over the line 👋
-
Just like the cricket, the weather has put a stop to the golf at Celtic Manor, play suspended due to the threat of lightning. At least they managed to complete the Ladies Scottish Open, Stacy Lewis winning there.
-
Following his first win on the European Tour 2 weeks ago, Sam Horsfield wins again at Celtic Manor, at the age of 23 looks a good prospect.
-
Terrible conditions today up at Troon for the Women's Open.
I see that Muirfield is the Venue for the 2022 Women's Open, good to see the members there have now moved from the 19th century to the 21st century.
-
A fantastic performance from Sophia Popov in the Women's Open at Troon, ranked 304th in the world she wins the championship by 2 shots on 7 under.
-
The first time for many years the European Tour returns to The Belfry today. Apart from Villa of course, the 1985 Ryder Cup at The Belfry was the best sporting event I have attended, the atmosphere was fantastic. It was the first time the USA had lost since 1957. Saw Ballesteros, Faldo,Lyle, Woosnam and Langer.
I was about 200 yards away, couldn't get any closer, from Sam Torrance when he sank the putt to win the Cup on the 18th. He was just a dot in the distance, I suppose a bit like watching football at West Ham.

If you didn't catch the finale to the BMW Championship yesterday between Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm, I suggest you go and seek out the video!

Dustin Johnson wins the Fed Ex Cup and gets a cheque for a mere $15m.

Sam Horsfield out of US Open after testing positive for coronavirus

US Open starts today held at Winged Foot Golf Club in New York state, considered to be one of the toughest courses in the world. Last held there in 2006, when Colin Montgomerie needed a par on the final hole to win and ended up with a double bogey to lose by one stroke.
No Brooks Koepka, due to injury, in the field, Dustin Johnson is the favourite with the bookies, best English hopes Fleetwood, Fitzpatrick, Hatton, Rose and Casey.
17/2 Johnson, 10/1 Rahm, 14/1 Thomas and Schauffele, 16/1 Morikawa, 18/1 McIlroy, 25/1 Simpson and DeChambeau, Others 35/1 Fleetwood, 45/1 Hatton, 55/1 Woods and Fitzpatrick, 60/1 Rose and Casey.

I've done my usual Eddie Pepperell E/W bet.....as i do every major....never won me a penny...one day, one day.
-
Had a few quid on McKenzie Hughes E/W at 250/1 with Hills.
-
Patrick Reed and Bryson DeChambeau are the leaders going into the third round, not the most popular of golfers. Apart from Reed, Justin Thomas is the only other major winner in the top 10. Tiger misses the cut by 4 strokes, finishing on 10 over for the 2 rounds, he's gone from being the best putter in the world, to a very average putter.
-
A superb round of 65 gives 21 year old American Matthew Wolff a 2 shot lead going into the final round, playing in his first major, if he wins, he will be the first debutant in 107 years to win the US Open. Rory has given himself an outside chance of winning with a round of 68.
-
Well done Bryson DeChambeau winning by 6 strokes, to finish on 6 under for the tournament on such a difficult course as Winged Foot is some achievement, interesting to see how he gets on at The Masters in November. Great effort from Matthew Wolff on finishing 2nd in his first major, as for Rory another disappointing slam, had a final round of 75.

I want to hate him, but I have to admit to being impressed. He set out to do something unconventional and he has succeeded, it's tough to knock him for that.
-
1999 Open Champion Paul Lawrie retiring from The European Tour after 620 tour appearances.
-
Well done Tyrrell Hatton on winning his first PGA Championship at Wentworth and good effort also from local man Andy Sullivan finishing 3rd with a closing round of 65.

Never mind that.
Hoodies in golf, Yea or Nay? It's a Yes from me.

It’s a massive no from me.

Hoodies in golf, Yea or Nay? It's a Yes from me.
If it makes you play like Hatton then Yes
-
If it makes you play like Hatton then Yes
The only thing I can do like Hatton is drink Guinness and that's Ricky.
-
Well done Scotland's Martin Laird on winning his first PGA title for 7 years in Las Vegas.
-
6 Englishmen in the top 8 at the end of the Scottish Championship, but it's Spaniard Adrian Otaegui, who wins it.
-
England's Ross McGowan wins the Italian Open, first win on the European Tour for 11 years.
-
England's Callum Shinkwin wins the Cyprus Open after a play off and his first European Tour title.

Of all the sporting events happening at strange times of this year, The Masters in November is right up there as one of the strangest. As expected muscle bound DeChambeau is the favourite, there's talk of him driving the 445 yard 1st hole, which is ridiculous, will be interesting to see how he tackles Augusta, so far does not have a great record there.
Rory has not won a major for 6 years and on present form his winless run is likely to continue. Don't reckon he will win it but wouldn't be surprise if Hatton was in contention, big question is will he be wearing his hoodie? If Casey finds his PGA form, then he does have a chance, other best English hopes are probably Fleetwood, Rose and Fitzpatrick.
If you fancy Tiger to defend his title you can get 45/1, for what it's worth my 50p is on Cantlay.
7/1 DeChambeau, 8/1 Johnson, 9/1 Rahm, 11/1 Thomas, 12/1 McIlroy, 14/1 Schauffele, 16/1 Koepka, 25/1 Cantlay, Matsuyama and Finau, 28/1 Hatton.

When it's cloudy, Augusta just looks wrong, but when the sun is out you can hardly tell it's mid-November.
I was thinking earlier how strange it is that the likes of McIlroy and Spieth both went through a couple of years where they looked like they were going to dominate the sport, then just tailed off.
-
What a round from Casey 7 under 65 bogey free, not bad
-
The absence of spectators is a detriment to most sports. However, golf is far better without them
-
Yeah I'm not missing 'Get in the hole'
-
Yeah I'm not missing 'Get in the hole'
I also don't miss seeing a hundred idiots sticking their face out at every tee. I know those guys and gals are good, but a slight mis-hit and someone could have their face turned inside out.
-
McIlroy shoots a 75 first round and then follows it up with a 66, typical Rory.
-
At Augusta Greg Norman, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth are examples of golfers, who have had big leads going into the final round and then had major meltdowns.
Johnson's nearest challengers are Ancer, Im, Smith and Frittelli and none of those have even be in in contention to win a grand slam, let alone win one. So if someone is going to make a challenge it may well come from Thomas or Reed. It's still possible, but I wouldn't recommend putting any money on it.
-
The leaders are teeing off at 2.39pm yet the Augusta committee are not allowing live coverage until 3pm, they're a strange lot at Augusta.
-
Rory shoots a 3 under par for his first nine, now only 5 off the lead. Johnson's lead cut to 2, it's getting interesting.
-
Tiger just had a 10 on the par 3 12th, went into the water 3 times, sad to see.

Then birdies 5 of the next 6 awesome mental strength

Actually thought it was good to see, made me feel a whole lot better about my game!
-
Well it was a great weekend for our Jack, Lewis Hamilton, Katie Taylor and in golf Dustin Johnson. At the turn Cameron Smith was just 2 shots behind, but it only really looked like been one winner and Johnson put it beyond doubt with a run of 3 birdies at 13, 14 and 15. He had previously blown 4 leads after 3 rounds in majors, so fair play to him for seeing this one out. His final score 20 under was an Augusta record, which says it all.
Credit also to Cameron Smith on becoming the first player in Masters history to shoot all 4 rounds in the 60s. Agree with montague that was some come back by Tiger, can't have been too many players, who have done something similar at Augusta or any major.

Matt Fitzpatrick wins the DP World Championship with a closing round of 68. Lee Westwood wins The Race to Dubai not bad at the age of 47.
