Football.  Bloody hell.

Up to 16th which was almost unthinkable as we went in at half time.  Absolutely brilliant.  Top marks to everyone.  Even Drinky, who was going berserk on the bench as we scored the winner.

Don't think you were alone there, I just thought the same thing mate.

Great strike by Konsa. We were, once again, so much better once Drinkwater was yanked off the pitch.

What a finish! We were much the better side on the night, but lacked a cutting edge to make the most of all of our possession. Smith has to take some credit for the earlier change than normal, and it resulting in the equaliser.

They always looked dangerous on the break, but so delighted to see us get the rewards for plugging away right to the end.  Not our best performance, but we deserved to win, and we did it without a forward!  Bring on Bournemouth!

What the actual fuck just happened!

95the minute desperate for a goal and your 2 center halves combine for the 3rd center half to twat into the top corner, what the fuck is that all about!

Get those fucking strikers in now Villa asap!

Watford were absolutely horrendous, time wasting from the 50th minute ffs. Hopefully thats the Pearson manager boost gone and they can fuck off back to were they belong.

Well that may well be our season defining game. We'll go into the next game with a new striker. That was a big, big result. If Samatta can have even half the impact Bent did under Houllier, it'll probably be enough to keep us up.
At some point we need to put a run of results together. 4 points from 6 now. Let this be the start, and lets not throw away a golden opportunity against Bournmouth. We've also got to be eyeing the Spurs game with confidence. If we can get 4 from the next 6, we'll be in good shape. That leave us with 12 games and 11 points from the magic 40.

Seems as if the goal is being awarded to mings, which seems very harsh on konsa!

Took a crazy deflection watching the replay. We will take it!

Kind of game no-one deserved to win. Our lads battled hard but lack of quality, Grealish aside, was painfully obvious. Removing Drinky helped matters, who ever sanctioned that signing needs sectioning. Nakamba's best game in a long time, same for Targett who I've slated here regularly.

Reina 8 - huge save from Deeney and very solid on high ball and with his feet. Proving me wrong!
Guilbert 7 - solid as per usual
Konsa 6 - woeful for their goal, has a horrible ball watching habit, redeemed himself with winner
Mings 7 - fortunate to stay on pitch but at least broke even with Deeney physically and used ball well
Hause 6 - bringing the ball out from the back is clearly not his forte but his physical presence is definitely useful, won the initial ball for the winner
Targett 7 - best game in a long time and his shot eventually forced the equaliser
Nakamba 7 - slow start but grew in confidence after winning a few physical duels, solid game
Drinkwater 4 - 3rd game in 10 days , few tidy passes early on but once again miles short of the required fitness
Trez 5 - tries hard but a very limited player. One dimensional
Grealish 8 - took far too much out of ball at times but even at that a different level to every other player on pitch. Gets hacked around at this level now like last season. Exceptional for the equaliser.
AEG 6 - battled hard and when he got ball he used it well.
Luiz 7 - got the goal and tidy in possession but needs to show more courage getting the ball off the back. Goal could lift confidence a lot.
Vassiliev 5 - ran around and competed well but this is too soon for him. Reminds me in style of Weimann.

A number of thoughts...

- F**k you Pearson, you timewasting arrogant bell-end.
- F**k you Deeney, you utter c**t. Who's making silly faces now, eh?
- Reina is a brilliant cover signing. Not just for the save that stopped us going 2 behind, but for the presence of mind to be moving everyone else so that Mings and Konsa could go forward while he lumped the ball in. Experience.
- Our recruitment team have taken a fair amount of stick. Whatever, Guilbert is an absolute steal for £5m.
- Nakamba had his best game for ages.
- I quite like Vassilev, he's got something - little pest of a player always buzzing around.
- Drinkwater had a couple of good moments but at best he is cover for McGinn. We still need a proper defensive midfielder to compete with Nakamba for the place at the base of the midfield.
- In conclusion, f**k you Pearson, f**k you Deeney. Well done Villa.

You jest - but in the ad break on GSS after the final whistle, they corrected the score back to 1-1!
I was shouting ‘YOU ARE F@@@ING KIDDING ME!!!’
Then they corrected it back to 2-1 & gave the goal to Mings instead of Konsa. I still don’t know why they had to take the goal off us first to do that!

Anyway - I thought that was great performance tonight. Everyone seemed to give everything. Really happy.

Massive win. I enjoyed watching our bench, Drinkwater, Lansbury and Nyland celebrating the winner. Thought it showed the spirit and that the players do care. They might not be up to it ultimately but it is a different scenario than last time we were in the Premier League.

We had to get 3 points and somehow we did. There's a way to go yet and we can only look better with a striker.

Is it as embarrassing as when your only comment when we win is to call fellow fans "bed wetters"?

What is wrong with people that rather than enjoy a vital win their only comments are digs at fellow fans.

Nobody is happier than me tonight.

That’s what it’s all about....just fucking winning.

Is there a better goal than a last kick winner.
And to make it even sweeter, it was all down to Watford’s time wasting for the whole game.

Fucking brilliant.

But god do we need a striker.

Fuck off Deeney and your band of shit house, time wasting, snidey, Cosplay Stoke c***s. You got what you deserved, fuck all.

Excellent grit and guts to keep going. We deserved that. We got in good positions throughout, but the absence of a striker was laid bare.

I felt first half we were the better side, without posing a great threat, despite getting into good positions. They score from their only attack, save the Lace Curtain Deulofeu.

Great save second half from Reina and then I felt we really bossed them. Targett got into good positions, Dougie injected energy, Nakmaba was excellent all night and we chucked everything we had at them.

Thank god we have a striker. Thank god we have bottle.

Can't stand Deeney. He loves playing us, seems almost nailed on to score, so to get the win and rub it in the fuckers face feels especially pleasing and I really hope Watford go down, just because it'll mean Deeney goes down. They can come back up when he's retired and Pearson's pissed off too.

I don’t know about minimum, it looks like it ended up a metre wider then it would have been which meant it was unstoppable. Anyway, any slight touch by an attacking player means it is given to them.

Brilliant result. A plaster over the wound but 3 points are 3 points and as I criticise the team when they play shit, praise is due for grinding out the result. And what was funnier was listening to the wm coverage and the noses night being ruined by us winning and them being denied a winner by odd refereeing. Inconsequential to us but very amusing to me. Up the villa and let’s get them points on the board.

Had a horrible feeling of inevitability about it when with literally their only attack they 1-0 up. Then after we equalised we lost a bit of momentum, largely down to Watford’s horrible snidy fecking tactics. But whilst the quality wasn’t always there, they showed some bloody bottle and passion tonight and that’s probs 90% of what we need in remaining games.

Nakamba has his best game for months, Mings imperious, Reina superb, ghazi full of running, great cameo from the kid and what finishes from Luiz and Konsa (with Mings help)....and the holte end went f**king mental when the winner went in.

It’s the hope that kills ya, but we have hope.

Fucking YAS.

It was hardly a scintillating performance, but we showed great character and fight, and deserved to win.

And Watford are a nasty, horrible, cheating bunch of bastards all versed in the dark arts from goalkeeper to centre-forward. The referee was hopelessly out of his depth and should be struck off for not booking anyone for time-wasting.

But in the end their time-wasting allowed just enough time for us to score and watch them kick off sadly with sadness in their stupid sad eyes.

Fucking YAS.

Brilliant at the end as 38,000 people chanted 'Deeney, Deeny, what's the score?' Serves him right for doing the same as that scrote Vardy giving it the Billy Big Bollocks in front of the Holte after scoring. Holy shit, the end of that game was crazy! We bloody deserved it as well.

As others have mentioned, Watford must have been watching Pulis-era Stoke DVDs all week, what a bunch of shithouses. If I’d have been a neutral watching this I’d have been glad they lost as well. Their time wasting was absolutely excruciating, and Atkinson just kept letting them do it.

Anyway, fuck em, that’s a great result and badly needed. Let’s kick on!

Gritty win but that will be huge end of the season.

We struggled for most of that simply not to having anyone to play off in the final third, you really miss proper strikers in games like this.

Watford did nothing for the first 40 minutes but time waste. They then scored a decent goal, missed another good chance and then after that double Reina save did nothing but time waste for the last 40 minutes aswell.

We do have a good knack of winning the home games we need to.

I thought we were excellent throughout. Apart from a few dicey moments when they could've been clean through but played the wrong ball we were resolute.

Grealish was obviously MOTM but Nakamba was outstanding.

Turning point of the game was that Reina double save to keep us in it. Going 0-2 would have been very unjust.

A win makes everything so much better. I just got my tickets for next week to hopefully witness the debut of Samatta in the flesh. Let's fucking get it! (https://twitter.com/mrjimmyhessel/status/1217916015914422272)

Much the better team for the first half hour without really threatening, then their goal knocked us back. We lost concentration when Delefou switched sides.
Nakamba had his best game for a while.
Drinkwater was much improved.
El Ghazi some decent touches in an unfamiliar role.
Hause good defensively but let down by poor distribution.
Reina commanding in the air without really being tested although there was a scramble in the second half. He seems to radiate confidence.
Jack quiet by his standards but still appeared the most likely .
Vassilev did well when he came on.
Nothing like a last minute winner and hugging random strangers.

Well you can’t beat a last minute winner. I thought we bossed the first half but it was either a poor final ball in or a good ball in and no striker to put it in. Ours heads went after the goal and the Luiz comes on and changes the game. I thought Nakamba was excellent and Reina really controls they game from the back, some of his distribution was excellent. Well done boys.

I think El Ghazi deserves credit for staying down and being passive as if he had tried to get up he may have been judged to have impeded the keeper’s vision / interfered with play / become active, whatever those eejits in control of VAR had needed to get their bonus for the night.

Smart play methinks.

The problem with this team isn't talent. There is talent there.
It's character.
And against Watford the villa players matched the coaches character.
Tonight the players showed how to win a football match
Because they showed the character to win
Dean Smith has always had the belief in this team
He is of good character

Well a grand old ending, I don’t think I’ve ever celebrated a goal sober the way I did that one, my daughter said it was the best game she’d ever seen. ‘Better than Wembley?’ yeah

The good, we battled, won our individual battles and Nakamba, Jack, ElGhazi were at full effort. Sub lad impressed me as well.

Negatives - And I’ll point this out as we won. We were soooooooo fuckkkkking sssssssllllllooooooowwwwww, players and particularly the management, they came for a draw and were the most cynical side I’ve ever seen, we had to take it to them and didn’t for most of the game. Said before that if we are playing three central defenders then one of them has to step into midfield in possession, we didn’t, and also had two deep lying central midfielders and the fulll backs didn’t get forward enough to pin them back.

Drinkwater impressed me a bit, he’s obviously well off the pace but he looks a leader from his interaction with the others. Not so good with the ball.

El Ghazi grew as the game progressed, Jack was Jack

I reckon that would've been a penalty if Kons had shot over, Mings clearly fouled so all was happening with him in the box!

Have to admit I completely missed the handball in the second, thought he'd fouled a Watford player given they were all protesting. We've seen many yellows for that so very surprised that didn't go to VAR.

VAR can't look at second yellows, only straight reds. I don't think anyone can say it was a straight red offence.

I don't think it was deliberate anyway, but even if it was, fuck the time-wasting twats. 😃

Yes Mings very lucky to avoid a straight red for the decapitation tackle, let alone the handball but given their utter shithousery alll through the game I think justice was served well.

Also got to say I was right by the Holte in upper witton tonight and really couldn't understand the impatience in the first half. Yes we were slow getting forward but you can't always open up teams by just charging forward all the time. We played it around at times, waited for Watford to press and then got past them.

Just relentlessly going forward would've just created more chances for delefeou as we saw with the chance he missed at the end of first half.

Vocal support in second half was pretty good but the crowd really needs to be more patient v likes of Spurs otherwise the players will start getting nervous and lose their focus and we'll be 2 goals down in blink of an eye like Man. city.

Newcastle are horrible to watch but they frequently get results against the top teams. Sometimes you just have to dig in and make sure it's still 0-0 after an hour.

ah right forgot about that rule. Good job Atkinson is a lenient ref. Couldn't believe he took 80 minutes to book a Watford player. Not just the time wasting but they were doing all sorts of cynical pulls and fouls when we were breaking.

Agree, I thought we played well from the start in the middle and going forward. Nice passing, lots and accurate, and we got at them when we didn’t have the ball. The goal was poorly defended and changed the game but I don’t have an issue with how at played before it.

Well done to the manager.

Luis blows out on the hour, but coming on when the game is stretched he makes a difference. Using his minimal resources well.

And fuck Watford.

Fantastic win. Great to celebrate right next to the away fans.
Team showed real character to come back from Deeney’s opener.
On the match threads I choose not to read them because the abuse of some of the players and manager is over the top but I accept that people have to let off steam and I absolutely wouldn’t criticize fans for what they post.
Just not my thing that’s all.
Anyway a massive win and UTV!

Think analysis is better left until tomorrow and tonight is just about savouring the win.  Like others have said in earlier posts, it felt like a massive win and I too found myself hugging complete strangers in the top tier of the North Stand when the winner went in.

Thought the officiating was poor all night.  Started with an awful decision by the linesman on the Trinity Road side in the first few minutes and carried on throughout with Atkinson allowing Foster to continually waste time at every opportunity.  I couldn't see how they only got 4 minutes of added time given all the tine Watford wasted and there were 4 substitutions.

As for Watford, it was a shithouse performance reminiscent of Tony Pulis and his ilk.  Wasting time right from the off, niggly fouls, their players going down as soon as touched.  Hope they perform line that fit the rest of the season.

Pearson and Deeney got what they deserved fuck all.

If they'd spent less time pissing about on free kicks, throw ins and substitutions, the game would have been over well before Konsa put the ball in the onion bag for the winner.

spot on

i took my young daughter tonight shes only been to a few games and she was asking why we were booing,
i told her it was because Watford were wasting time

and this was BEFORE they scored
i was quite surprised to see a Pearson side do that as i didn't think he was quite as bad as Pulis, Allardyce etc but obviously not
that's why i never advocate those sort of managers for Villa no matter how bad it gets although i've seen a new side to Pearson tonight i never knew he had

on Deeney,
my unpopular opinion is i don't mind him giving it back
he hates us we hate him, he's a bluenose and that's the way it is

we got the last laugh tonight and it was a beautiful thing

What a night. Two hours to get 50 miles home.

That was special. An entire game of Watford time wasting, anti football at its finest. That was justice, absolute justice.

We looked a different team when Luiz came on. Ah ma, I'm still buzzing!

I wonder if we'd have been given the pen if we hadn't scored? Atkinson was so appalling tonight, probably not.

Anyway, Deeney what's the score.....

I'll be glad when they get relegated and they and Deeney can piss off back from whence they came.

Same here, got a grudging respect for Deeney, he gives his all, even if he does look like he had a particularly good Christmas. Fuck all in the way of talent but he’s a pain in the arse and causes problems to defenders through will to win.

Delicious irony that they didn’t even have time to kick off after the goal.

Agreed on Deeney, John. I wasn't there but I can imagine that he would've been getting plenty of clog from the Holte. Only fair that he gets to give some back at a time like that.

Even fairer that he was fucked off back to Borehamwood with a flea in his ear, fuck all points  and a relegation to worry about.

He gave loads of shit to the Holte the first time he scored against us, before he had got any stick and, I reckon, before a high percentage of Villa fans in attendance even knew he was Blose.

Then again, I don't mind it when Joe Lolley winds up all three Blose fans after scoring against them, so I'm not going to get too upset about it.

We won, he didn't. 🙂

What a horrible team Watford are and assisted by an insipid referee.

Just fucking WOW! Fantastic night with Villa Park rocking under the lights. The noise when that winner went in was just phenomenal. Brilliant at the end as 38,000 people chanted 'Deeney, Deeny, what's the score?' Serves him right for doing the same as that scrote Vardy giving it the Billy Big Bollocks in front of the Holte after scoring. Great as well that we scored with the last kick of the game with all the time added on for their incessant time wasting. Still buzzing!

The full gamut, delight, despair, hope, joy, anxiety, desperation, ecstasy, culminating in the perfect way to win a game. We owe Watford a huge debt of gratitude, were it not for their spectacular petty time-wasting, we'd not have had quite the dramatic finale. Fttwf.

Buzzing after that. Never liked Pearson i've always thought he's a total bell end. His team reflected him perfectly tonight. Niggly snidey dirty cheating bastards.
And for those having a go at people for their match thread comments leave it out will you? The match thread is for those who can't make the game to have their say. Some of our players we're awful at times tonight. Saying so on here isn't going to affect the game. We all wanted them to turn it around and thankfully they did but this "i"m a better fan than you because blah blah blah" is a needless pop at fellow fans.

Well said.

Seconded. I'll say what I want to, thank you very much. It's a match thread and a place to comment and rant. Some of the play and players were crap at times, but in the end, we won. There were also some.decent passages of play. Three points, thank you very much, fuck off Pearson and Deeney.

The ref doesn’t add time on for what they were doing, hence it being called time wasting. So would have made no difference.
I think it’s 30 seconds added per substitution, so, there’s 3 minutes

There was great desire and determination from everyone of the players which is what we want and haven’t always had So far. Everyone has picked up on the ref’s inability to curb the time wasting which he should have sorted but didn’t. One thing Which hasn’t been mentioned is how he allowed their players time and time again to stand in front of the ball when we had a free kick. Is this no longer a bookable offence?

It's a huge momentum shift with 3 points instead of 1, or heaven forefend, a loss. I wasn't relishing the game next week in the Cup but now can't wait, with the optimism of last night, a new striker (perhaps another new player as well??) it should be a raucous atmosphere under the lights. Whatever the result, we should go to the South Coast in good heart.
My only reservation is the way we start so caustiously and pedestrian at home, I would prefer us to take the game to teams rather than have to come from behind. At HT a win looked unlikely, not just from the doom chamber of the match thread (to which I actively contributed before anyone gets all pissy) but on WM, and across other sections of the media, we weren't awful but weren't quite at the races and given our perilous position it was looking bleak. But enormous credit to the players and management to pull it around, it's not the way I'd like to win every game but if we prevail this season, I'll put up with it.

I don't particularly like Deeney,  but I think I agree and he is a key reason why Watford have had an upturn.

He's the sort of player that loves to be goaded so why do fans do it, as it's usually counterproductive. To be fair, at the end he was giving Dean a hug as well.

The first half was poor again with no real threat, though the second half was much better especially once the subs were made. I couldn't fault the great effort even if the quality is still missing and we are so reliant on Jack to create. Playing 5 at the back and 2 defensive midfielders seemed so negative in the circumstances. At least Targett got forward though Guilbert barely did.

The time wasting was ridiculous and to add only 4 minutes was outrageous, so Watford got their desserts in the end.

West Ham are away at Leicester tonight as one of their games in hand, and apparently the other is against Liverpool, so they’ll do well to get anything from those games. Leicester have been off the boil losing their last two games so they are due a win.

This is the problem with Wesley (yes I'm banging on about an injuried player), I dont think I saw when he was playing, if he ever attacked the ball in the 6 yard box like Deeney did, or even head it.
This might have been the shortcomings of the player, the coaching, or the crosses.

Hopefully Samatta knows how to play (head/ get in the box) and we dont have to rely on the defenders (and their backsides) to score in future!  ;D

Oh and it took a while for my blood pressure to drop to a normal level. Thanks! :)

Watford offer nothing except Deeney, Pearson is an anti footballing twat, I really hope they go down, time wasting after 15 minutes that went unpunished throughout & snidey little fouls throughout.

A few other observations.
Drinkwater, shakey start but grew into it, still off the pace.
Nakamba, much better still too slow.
Hause, some game saving tackles and some brain fart moments.
Mings, lucky to be on the pitch but him and Pepe combined well.
Pepe, that punch to clear off Deeney's head, that's why we brought him in.
Grealish, stay on your feet, went down far too easily in the box c80 mins.

One that maybe I'm reading too much into but Smith & Terry never spoke the entire 90 minutes, Pearson stood alongside his No2 in the technical area most of the game our head coach and his assistant were incommunicado all game it seems.

Come on Leicester, Spurs and Manure tonight.

On the Deeney subject we give him some pantomime stick and he gives us some back. I don't think we cross the line with it and I don't think he does either. I like his commitment to be fair and I actually think he could do a job for England which the striking situation at the moment.

Jon, Terry isn't Dean's assistant he's just a coach. But the way they celebrated together after the winner tells me there is no problem between them.

Working in Dublin and watched it with the Leinster Lions at Buskers where the roof went off on the 95th minute. Great spirit second half. It's all about results where we are at the moment, we shouldn't forget that.

Didn’t see that, seems a bit odd that Smith stands out there alone, looks rather forlorn at times, maybe he just needs a hug 🤗

This for me too.  With his allegiences he will always get stick from us and give it back.  I wish we had someone leading our line with his passion and tenacity, in fact I'd be perfectly happy with him in our team.

He's got a Blues tattoo on his leg. He will NEVER play for Aston Villa! I have no problem with him dishing it out when he scores against us. That's a given. And a shout out to Luiz too for him taking the piss out of Deeney when he scored the equaliser. Quality!

I'll say this - as much as I dislike that wind-up merchant, it is never acceptable to throw things down at a player, and in that regard some of our lot did actually cross the line last night.

A deserved win against a pretty rubbish, niggly side who got exactly what was coming to them after some of the most blatant time wasting I have ever seen. I thought Nakamba had a really good game, sticking his foot in and breaking things up.

An other thing I didn’t notice which was pointed out by someone on Twitter.  On 60 minutest Smith summoned a ball boy to run around the pitch and inform all other ball boys to get the ball back quickly when it went out of play.

Good! I said this at one point, it was shocking how unitelligent our ball boys were. Credit to Deano for addressing that. I can’t remember who Dave said once shouted,
“You’re not for to wear the tracksuit!”

I wasn’t sure about squabbling with their keeper to put it down or give it him, but it helped highlight the issue (for all the good it did) when he spent X seconds picking it up moving it then putting it back in the same place.

Perhaps those incidents though do build in ref’s mind to give us the benefit of the doubt to allow a last attack to play out. What a sweet sweet richly ironic way to finish.

I only ever sing for our lads (I know I’m weird by most standards but decline to get involved in other stuff) but even I couldn’t resist enquiring to Mr Troy Deeney Esquire as to the outcome of the Assiciation Football fixture.

I think if we had lost to that shower, it may have been the point of no return. Huge credit to the team for sticking at it, despite the oppositions blatant attempts to waste time. Maybe if some of these players who have under performed for most of the season are starting to hit some form, and we get a striker in, we might just kick on and get well out of that bottom 3.

I was actually a bit bored for the first 20 minutes, for the first time since Bruce left.  It was like back then, slowly moving the ball around with very little idea or movement.  Thank God it got better.  We were still much the better side and yet they went through us like a hot knife through butter to take an undeserved lead.  You could see there why Man City were able to get 6.

I didn't think Drinkwater was too bad, some good things, some bad,  but still needs to get up to speed and work on his touch, he got closed down and caught on the ball too often.

Can't really say anyone played badly although I have to say Hause on the ball is dreadful at the moment, like a blind kitten with a ping pong ball and missed a sitter of a header (or was it two?).   And Trezeguet whilst appearing to work hard,  continues to run around like an eager puppy to no effect whatsoever.  Still cannot see the point of him.

I thought the wing backs played well, Targett linked up well with Grealish a few times.  Grealish seemed to be trying to do it all on his own too often second half, taking on three or four men.  Possibly due to the lack of options/quality around him.

Twatford got what they deserved for their timewasting throughout the second half - aint Karma a bitch?

I’ve got lots of thoughts on the game not all positive I have to say

but I was with my two youngest kids last night (11+14) we went down to the front of the Doug to see the game out
when that last second goal went in we were jumping around like loons,
my lad was in the arms of a total strangers we were hugging and just embracing everyone around

I don’t think you get that moment of complete abandonment with anything else in life more than live football

a home game relegation scrap against a nonentity Watford on paper nothing to write home about in the pages of our life history yet we came away with a memory that will last for a lifetime

only football can do that

Agreed, all the lads I went to the Brighton game with agreed that the last-gasp winner will stay with them for life, and two of them weren't even Villans. A couple of us ended up in the next row because those directly in front of us had left early and the surge from the crowd pushed us forward so suddenly!

Great memory for your boys, John. As a kid at VP I never experienced a last-gasp winner like that - they will never forget it!

Just seen elsewhere this is apparently the first season since the mid 90s where we've scored injury time winners in at least two league games.

That's a good knack for any emerging club to have, fighting to the end and not just content with the point like we have been so often in the past.

BBC Stats has that as well as it being our first win from being behind at the break. Remember though all stats are only for Prem League though.

Quote
Rare Villa Premier League fightback - the stats
  • Aston Villa ended their three-game losing streak against Watford in the Premier League, with this win their first victory against the Hornets in the competition since January 2007 (2-0).
  • Villa have won a Premier League game having been behind at half-time for the first time since September 2013 (3-2 versus Manchester City), ending a run of 51 games without a victory in the competition when trailing at the break.
  • Villa have scored two 90th-minute winners in a single Premier League season (Matt Targett v Brighton in October and Tyrone Mings here) for the first time since 1994-95.
  • Villa have scored in nine consecutive home Premier League games for the first time since May 2007-March 2008 (a run of 16).
Watford's Troy Deeney has scored more Premier League goals against Aston Villa (six in four games) than he has against any other side in the competition.
  • Douglas Luiz's equaliser for Aston Villa was his third Premier League goal of the season and first since October 2019 against Norwich.
Aston Villa goalkeeper Pepe Reina has conceded as many goals in his last two Premier League appearances at Villa Park (2) as he did in his first seven with Liverpool (also two)

I really can't stand Pearson.  He's a thick-as-pigshit, passive-aggressive bully.  You can tell in his interviews that he's straining every fibre of his being to appear reasonable and considered, with his more sensible haircut and glasses, as you can almost see him counting to ten before answering questions. When asked last night if Mings should have been sent off, he said more than once that "it doesn't really matter what I think" when you could tell he wanted nothing more than to punch the interviewer in the face before staring madly at his blood-splattered nose shouting "sending off, you tell me now was it a sending off, are you a fucking ostrich?!!!!111111"  Wanker.

still buzzing after that winner

had such a shit day yesterday , to witness that , the emotions just came flooding out  at the end. My season ticket holder Auntie has just fell down the stairs with broken legs and bleed on the brain in the QE at the moment so that was for you auntie Denise.

Luis is gonna be a top player for us . just love his swagger and cheek , next season he will be a star.

The wingbacks so much better than the other two , both did good.

Nakamba was very good as was Pepe , massive signing and leadership there .

Hause wil be a great defender once he sorts out his passing.

Mings and Jack their usual selfs.

Trez I stil dont get him .

We didnt work their goalie for a long time which was disappointing even thou we was the better team but the subs made a difference .
Just hope this gives us a massive lift now and with Samagoal can get a result at Bournemouth.

we can and will stay up....

Yes! He is a fucking bellpiece. Well said, Risso.

One that maybe I'm reading too much into but Smith & Terry never spoke the entire 90 minutes, Pearson stood alongside his No2 in the technical area most of the game our head coach and his assistant were incommunicado all game it seems.

I don't think you can read things very well
I'm sorry that is completely conjecture and absolute rubbish.
I saw very clearly on the TV last night JT and Smith in deep discussion hands over mouth .
The cameras showed it clear as.

I don't know what you're doing with your needless and unfounded speculation . Sane with your claims on Bowen being signed.
I respect your effort in going to games but I advise please be a bit more accurate with things

I'm sorry until you improve I can't rate your posts as they are wildly inaccurate and need calling out.

JT was actually looking at Smith and running out to celebrate the goal!
There is no issue apart from your ocassional unsightly posts.

One that maybe I'm reading too much into but Smith & Terry never spoke the entire 90 minutes,

maybe a lovers tiff  because they massively hugged each other when we got the winner

Not true though, they were on camera talking to each other not long after Watford scored, just before half time. Terry was doing that 'covering his mouth' thing so he couldn't be lip-read, but it looked very much like he was pointing out to Dean an observation he'd made, and Dean appeared to be listening.

Was really pleased with that result. I thought we tried to play football throughout the game and sometimes that paid off, sometimes it put us in trouble but we dominated possession and got the result our performance deserved. I’ve been sat in the Upper Trinity this season and have a much better appreciation of what we’ve been trying to do than previously, this was a good performance.

Scores on the doors:

Reina - 8 - very good distribution and extremely calm and experienced.
Guilbert - 7 - I think he’s a bit out of form from how he started the season but contributed both offensively and defensively.
Konsa - 8 - a couple of “moments” but comfortable on the ball and stepped into midfield to good effect.
Mings - 8 - the rock, just love him, extra point for the answer to Geoff Shreeves in the post match.
Hause - 6 - he is solid defensively but unfortunately his distribution is woeful, still learning the game.
Targett - 7 - played well, always available and just needs to work on that final delivery which can be erratic.
Nakamba - 7.5 - still a bit panicky in possession but really did his job last night, much better.
Drinkwater - 6 - getting up to speed so one good thing is invariably followed by a bad one, better though.
Trezeguet - 6 - agree with the description earlier of him running about like a demented puppy to not a lot of effect.
El Ghazi - 7 - good work from AEG last night, never stopped running and tried his best as the main striker.
Grealish - 8 - the heartbeat of this team, carried the ball to good effect though did try too much himself on occasion.
Luiz - 8 - a goal, lovely passing and distribution and getting forward when needed, much much better. His speed of pass is soooo good.
Vassilev - 7 - ran around a lot, some good link ups and showed some good maturity.

The Crowd - 8 - average first half much better second half.

Smith - 7.5 - stuck to his 3-4-3 principles and its starting to work. We are still a bit open in the centre of the pitch but if we can keep possession as well as we did last night then it won’t be a major issue. Got his subs right as well. Pleased for him.

Watford - time wasting, fouling, cheating ******. Got exactly what they deserved for a display of Warnock, Pulis, Bruce, Allardyce style anti football. I haven’t seen that much time wasting since Colin  Wanker turned up with Cardiff and Grealish scored a last minute volley to win that one. They have some talent but you could see with Pearson his innate caution meant they didn’t try to kill us off. Let’s see how long he makes his new manager bounce last now.

still buzzing after that winner

had such a shit day yesterday , to witness that , the emotions just came flooding out  at the end.

Best wishes to your Aunt, mate.

Anyway ,poetic justice was served with the timing of the Konsamings goal.

The MLS season starts next month !
Actually it's first time ever for February but it's 29th march so not really that much of Feb!
So if you're genuinely interested this season he's again with Toronto!
Check out his website http://www.jozyaltidore.com
But maybe we should do this on other games and not highjack the Villa Watford match!
Altidore performed well last season and went to cup final
But I thing premier league is beyond him now.

Agreed on Deeney, John. I wasn't there but I can imagine that he would've been getting plenty of clog from the Holte. Only fair that he gets to give some back at a time like that.

Even fairer that he was fucked off back to Borehamwood with a flea in his ear, fuck all points  and a relegation to worry about.

The babby told me he stayed on the pitch and clapped the Villa players off.

I’ve never minded him. He’s from the manor and he used to ask my daughter out. She didn’t fancy him. I can’t think why.

Obviously, he a horrific troll-faced mess, but that's because he's a Blues fan, and that's what Blues fans look like.

I don't mind him taking the piss and rubbing it in with us, we'd be laughing if that was 10 years ago and it was Gabby doing it to Small Heath fans. Fair play to him.

I always remember in the 80s when David Seaman was at QPR, we always used to engage in some gentle baiting with him ("Are you glad you left the Blues?" was a chant I recall), it's harmless enough *

The people throwing stuff at him are absolute fucking idiots, though.

Back to analysis.

That game summed up the beauty of this sport. At 7.30 I was nervous, at 8.15 I was thinking about renewing trips to Rotherham and Wigan and at 9.25 I was hugging strangers and belting out "Sweet Caroline" with all the gusto I could summon.

Reina looks like a really shrewd acquistion. A leader and a winner. Great second half save and excellent distribution.
Konsa and Hause both have real potential but need to work on concentration and cut out errors. I can't fathom why so often the ball is played square to Hause when Konsa is available and much better on the ball.
I thought Drinkwater was awful first two games but last night he showed he has awareness, can thread a pass through and has some "nous". Once he has got his sharpness back he will be a useful addition.
El Ghazi has been given a thankless task but has been disciplined and hard working as the lone striker.
Once Samatta comes in we shall have a focal point - especially for the full-backs when they put crosses in.
We showed resilience and positivity after again going a goal behind.

Lastly, a plea for everyone to get behind this team. One bloke behind me spend the first hour castigating Drinkwater, Hause and Deano in turn.   These players care and with our backing, especially when things aren't going too well, they will give it the proverbial 110%.

Feeney has every right to do that and it's kind of nice to see a player who's still a fan (though how absolutely Blues is it that his fandom is expressed solely in being obsessed with us). It's all part of the game, and it's just up to us to make sure we beat him.

He was one of the few who spoke out when we got relegated saying he didn't want it to happen as it would mean job losses at the club.

For the non matchplaying staff etc.

Even Erik Cack and the troglodytes playing for us at the time didn't seem to have those concerns.   So he went up in my estimation after that.

I can't be sure, but he might be one of those odd Bluenoses that spent a fair bit of time at VP growing up.  Plenty around Chelmsley Wood seemed to think he was Villa. Lee Carsley who was another one who had impeccable taste growing up (former Holte Ender) before he started mixing with the lower orders.

If Deeney was so worried about job losses before we were relegated, I wonder why he took so much obvious pleasure in hammering another nail in our coffin at Vicarage Road a few years ag after his late winner in front of us. He can fuck himself, just like every other jealous, insecure Blues fan can

Peter 'Pants Down' Shilton. For our younger readers...............

In May 1980, the England goalkeeper parked his Jag in a dirt track behind Nottingham racecourse with Tina Street at 5am. No drama there, except Shilts had drunk a few too many and Tina's husband Colin was hardly enamoured with the fact that the pair were "partially clothed" when he tried to open the car door. When police arrived at the scene, Shilts sped off, crashed into a lamppost and was busted for drink driving.

I think Deeney likes playing the panto villain - especially so against us. He took time out to speak to all the villa kids during his warm up. As genuine a Brummie fella as you would wish to meet. If it was not for his link with that lot we would all actually embrace him. I would imagine he will end up playing for them at the end of his career - well if they still have a club left  ;D

Reina - class, experience and coolness - could be a masterstroke

Guilbert - really like this guy - face swollen with an abcess but still battled like a trouper

Targett - really provided an outball and was one, if not his best game for us - great effort on goal to create the chance for Luiz

Mings - imperious

Hause - some heart in the mouth moments but last 15 mins threw his body in front of everything

Konza - As Hause but more composed at times

Drinkwater - some muppet was slagging him off by me from the first whistle - I am sure once he gets match fit he will be prove to be a big asset in the final part of the season with his experience alone

Jack - Was as we know him to be - unbelievable how strong he must be to take such a physical bashing every game - look at his shorts when he leaves the pitch they are filthy as he is put on the floor so much

Trez - Still for me the weakest part of the team and expect his place to be lost to accommodate Samatta

El Ghazhi - Worked his nads off for the team with very little service or support

Nakamba - MOTM - thought he was exceptional last night - maybe having the experience of Drinkwater next to him gives him more freedom to express himself

Luiz - Great impact and great goal  - you see glimpses of just how good he could be - time will tell (still not fully forgiven him yet for sucking up to Pep)

Vassilev - Very Weinmann in his approach - worked for the team without any real impact

Dean and the coaches - fair play to you - this is all about the team and unity and we have it in heaps. Everyone has the right attitude and fight about them - so very different to that shower of shit that got us relegated

Potential muppet here as I thought Drinkwater was way off the pace and Konsa was poor in his defending, too weak and not alert to danger, especially in providing cover for Guilbert.

One that maybe I'm reading too much into but Smith & Terry never spoke the entire 90 minutes, Pearson stood alongside his No2 in the technical area most of the game our head coach and his assistant were incommunicado all game it seems.

This is a good point. Being at the games, I would rarely post 'in flight', and the internet service  is poor anyway, but the difference after a win, and in particular a last-gasp win is striking. I suspect my own match thread comments would not have necessarily matched my post-thread ones. The result was everything.

I agree, I try (and don't always succeed) to consider the posts on the match thread in the same way as I would the crowd in the ground, unless someone is obviously being a dick (we've all seen someone giving shit to one of our own players from the kick off) those comments should stay in there.

However I do have more of an issue with people leaving the match thread to go to player threads or the manager out thread and slag people when the game is still in the balance. I just don't see the point, the match thread is for venting during the game, keep it there and then take to the rest of the board after the final whistle. Aside from anything else it leads to some posts that look really silly the next day at times.

Working in Dublin and watched it with the Leinster Lions at Buskers where the roof went off on the 95th minute. Great spirit second half. It's all about results where we are at the moment, we shouldn't forget that.
Buskers is that in Temple Bar? Was in Dublin on Sunday and wanted to take my blue nose mrs in there.

Yes - on Fleet St. There is a dedicated area downstairs when Villa play.

I was in there for the Norwich away game. Phil who runs Leinster Lions is a jolly nice chap. Hoping to go back over at some point towards the end of the season.

Watched highlights again, no way can you say for certain that's deliberate handball. The rules may have changed so it doesn't have to be deliberate to be a foul, but it still has to be deliberate to be a booking. His hand is by his side. Would have been a nonsense decision.

I'm surprised the twat didn't send him off.

Thought we played well last night without too much of a cutting edge. Every player gave their all and hopefully now we have a new striker we can kick on. Watford really were dismal though and their time wasting was almost as bad as QPR under Steve McClaren.

It'll take more than having a chat with some kids to make up for repeatedly kicking someone in the head while they were on the floor.

Everyone bar Mings was running to celebrate with the “scorer” Konsa. Mints knew he had scored so was running to the fans to get the adulations. However I would argue that must be one of the best photos taken at a villa match since Weir was in his prime. *

* although Terry had to do that type of thing with film and older lenses of course as it is too easy now.

A week or so ago we get humiliated by Man City, that could have crushed us and sent us on a spiral. There’s a long way to go, but the fact that we can come back from that, get a credible point at one of our relegation rivals and beat another without a bloody centre forward, says everything about the team spirit amongst this group. The quality may not always be there, the confidence will not always be there, it’s still a long way to go to stay up, but I believe this lot are well up the scrap, let’s get behind them for the rest of the season.

The quality may not always be there, the confidence will not always be there, it’s still a long way to go to stay up, but I believe this lot are well up the scrap, let’s get behind them for the rest of the season.
in fairness, it’s been there for a lot of the time I’ve watched us this season. We just seem to lose our way at times. City at home and Watford away being prime examples. It did look for a time that Deano had lost the dressing room, but the players seemingly have answered that question now. I love Villa, you can’t expect the players to really get it the same way as we do, though some of them do seem to- Jack, Chester, McGinn and Mings, of note. Most of us can take a beating or two now and then, we just want to feel that the players have given everything.

Fantastic end to the game and fitting that the only sie wanting to play football won it.

So many improved performances from so many players, though we weren't in top form.

Didn't even know it was Tyrone's goal until I got home.
