The 5-1 annihilation of Liverpool. Probably the finest first 45 minutes ever at Villa Park........December 15th 1976.
-
As I have posted before, it was my first game!
It was incredible and set a bench mark seldom matched.
Left shell shocked and loved Villa from that day.
-
It was school night and I wasn’t allowed to go eeeeeeee
-
When John Robson started spraying 70 yard passes around the pitch we knew we were on to something special!
Best half of football I have ever seen from the Villa, we were irresistible! Just a shame all our goals were at the other end.
-
I have clear memories of most of that game and an abiding one is that every time we scored, Phil Thompson was chasing the referee claiming he, or one of his teammates had been fouled.
-
Was living in sunny Doncaster. On the way to work the following day picked up a newspaper and could not believe the score. That was the day after two decades of misery everything changed .......
-
Gary Newbon sent the ATV cameras to the goalless draw between Derby and Arsenal instead of to Villa Park because Derby had just signed Derek Hales from Charlton. He said it was the biggest mistake of his career.
-
Gary could also have sent the cameras to Mansfield for an FA Cup replay.
Final score: Mansfield 2, Matlock Town 5!!
Good choice, Gaz!!
-
Can remember it like it was yesterday. Stood three quarters of the way back on the holte ( left side) under the floodlights. Fuckin brilliant. Where have those years gone
-
School night for me too but went with my dad and uncle. A very special night.
-
...if memory serves, we,d scored 5 on a few occasions before that match.. turned to my mate before kick off & said" Cant see us getting 5 tonight" ...
-
Pity in a way the score wasn't 5-1 the other night - 17th Dec was very close to the 15th! Although the standard of the Liverpool team in 1976 was slightly higher!
