I've no issue with the centre back selection . Konsa has been very poor in recent weeks and Hause will give us better balance. Big ask mind, first start of the season and I suspect it's the first time this duo have played together?

Midfield is a strange one. We look horribly short of mobility in there. Lansbury has been getting minutes lately but without overly impressing. Luiz can't have any complaints in any case. I think we will be overrun in midfield today.

I think thats been abit harsh. Konsa was thrown in and I think he done well. Hause for me is so clumsy at times.

Huge gamble for me.

Got to say that’s more or less the team I’d have picked. Hause and Engels a well balanced and solid pair.

Angela deserves a chance and luiz was absolute toilet against Leicester.

If Conor is injured, fair enough, otherwise Lansbury playing is a strange decision. Wesley must be the first name on the team sheet, oh dear!!
Having watched Watford I think we can forget any easy games. You could see the nerves in the Liverpool players and think they got away with one there.

Is anyone else starting to wonder, “Did we get promoted before we were ready?” After all, we only came fifth in the Championship, and were lucky to get promoted. Perhaps the plan (?) was to win the Championship this season, and get promoted because we deserved to.

I don't agree sorry.  If we hadn't gone up, we'd have had an even bigger rebuilding job to do, as Grealish and McGinn wouldn't be here now.

How were we lucky? We smashed the league once we had a couple of defenders in and deservedly won the play-offs. I think we went up a year earlier than most at the club expected but it was deserved.
Title: Re: Sheffield United v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: themossman on December 14, 2019, 02:53:22 PM
Yeah same. I don’t think it really matters that much how you go up, it’s what you do next. We’re in better shape than Norwich, having kept our best players and spent big to add others. We’re just imbalanced. 2 good signings in January will see us right.

Smith could have went with Nakamba and Luiz again, which for me never works but he's at least trying something different. Lansbury is obviously in for Hourihane.

As for the forward department, no comment.

Well we'll see if that holds but Norwich only have 4 points away all season (same as us) and they've had a much easier schedule on the road.

We have aways at Watford, Burnley, Southampton, Newcastle etc so I'm reasonably confident we can get draws or the odd win from those games.

If we are going to avoid getting sucked right into the relegation fight, we are going to have to string together several games where we play much better and get the results you'd expect from those performances.

We just don't look like ever doing that.

I reckon we are going down unless there is some serious surgery in January.

It was indeed. We should've won there the following season but Barry skied over a penalty in the last minute. Haven't come close since.

Mad how bad it's up there when you compare it to Sunderland and Boro where we win most seasons when we play them.

If we are going to avoid getting sucked right into the relegation fight, we are going to have to string together several games where we play much better and get the results you'd expect from those performances.

We just don't look like ever doing that.

I reckon we are going down unless there is some serious surgery in January.

Weren't we doing that in late September? Draw v Burnley where performance was good but we were sloppy defending crosses then two back to back wins v Norwich and Brighton (that one was fortunate).

Anyway 7 points from 9 and things looking good and then the fixture list gives us Man. City and Liverpool. Strong 4 points from Newcastle-Man. United and then we get Chelsea and Leicester straight away.

Next 10 games is big chance to build up proper momentum.

I’d take that

So would I. Would keep us out of bottom 3 ahead of the two massive home games.
At some point we are going to have start winning at places where we're not expected to.

Norwich winning at Leicester is a classic example of this, and why I think we're currently looking in real trouble.

Leicester 1-1 now.

After 1-4 last week team is low on confidence so you do tend to knock more long balls to get out quicker when that happens.

A disjointed performance, but we've looked ok at the back.

SU: 256 passes. 76% accuracy.
AV: 181 Passes 61% accuracy.
Doesn't make good reading. We seem to have slipped into a coma since the heroics at Man United. On the bright side 0 goals conceded by half time is a good stat. Every cloud and all that.

I agree with usav, I'm not sure what people expect from Wesley here. He's been working back defensively and almost everything that's gone to him has been a hoof when he's alone with 2-3 defenders. Jack is too deep to offer any meaningful support and AEG has been dreadful whenever the ball has gone near to him. Lansbury and McGinn have barely been involved and the little bits where they've got on the ball they've not given us any control.

Tight game, thought we did okay, better organised at the back, Sheff Utd playing to there strengths which is based on a strong team spirit and knowing each others game, we have to knock them out of that which we can do by raising the tempo and forcing them into errors, see how well they stand up to that when under pressure, think we can win this maybe, need Jack to have more impact on the game, the only really creative player out there today, this game will open up in the second half, can't see it being a draw.

Defence has done well but my one fear is when balls come into the box we head it to the penalty spot/ the D on the edge of the box. So far we've got away with it but it's crying out for a Sheff Utd player to take advantage.

Going forward we're toothless. Even when Wesley manages to hold the ball up, we manage to lose it in seconds. AEG is no winger, I'm not even sure he's a footballer. He either needs to move further inside or replace him with Trez. Jack may as well not be on the pitch, isolated on the left as we're focusing our attack down the right.

Defending, very good. Kept our shape in midfield and forced them wide, where they've slowed it down rather than risk a ball in, as Hause and Engles are defending well against the high ball.

The issue has been in transition. McGinn has given up cheap ball, El Ghazi isn't with it and Wesley doesn't occupy the centre halves. Jack isolated wide.

But having given up 50 chances in the last two games, we've not given them anything.

We need a forward with pace to play off the shoulder, which won't happen at half time, but we do need to fund a way of getting Jack involved.

Cold and dull so far. I'll take the latter. First goal wins this.

I'm not blaming our performance on Wesley.  He doesn't get decent service, that's true.  But it's also true that he's not much cop.  What he is is a poor player who doesn't get decent service.  He's not the only poor player though, far from it.  We didn't spend our money too well.

Smith is a 60min man normally but I do think he does need to make tactical changes at the break. Sheff Utd are very average, first goal wins this game and we haven't a hope of getting it with the same set up.

I'd bring Luiz in for AEG and shift both McGinn and Grealish a lot further up the pitch behind their wing backs. Could also bring in Kodjia for Wes, I've no faith in JK but he couldn't be any worse.

We have three players playing well (Engels, Hause, Nakamba), everyone else average to anonymous.

The midfield 3 need to do more for me in helping us get the ball up the pitch. The long ball to Wesley isn’t great as even when he managed to hold it up he’s got nowhere near him.

Hause has looked solid.

The best you can say about him is that he's not noticeably the worst player on the pitch.  This is mainly to do with everybody else being just as bad, rather than the fact that he's done anything well.

Does their shot which hit Hause count?

He'll now have a ten minute conference with Terry, O' Kelly and Cutler on the bench and we probably won't see a change until 2-0. Then it will just be like for like.

Need Trez on and more direct running in final third. Might give Jack some more space aswell.

Targett, also. 16 million pounds? Fuck me. Not a terrible player, but isn't solid, no pace, doesn't really have any chance to get forward and cross the ball away from home.

We just aren't looking very good. Definitely in a relegation scrap.

Did you expect anything else. I will be ecstatic at 17th and devastated by 18th.

Hmm, probably not, in response to your question.

I thought Smith would be a little bit more creative in his tactics. Certainly less stubborn when it came to players not pulling their weight. McGinn has been poor for a while, but hasn't been subbed or dropped.

Anyway, come on Villa.

Bournemouth nicking a late winner at Chelsea is worrying me aswell. They've dug in there very well even with their injuries by all accounts.

Worrying the season has gone very flat all of a sudden. Not the time given the games we've got coming up. Back to having a real make or break period over it.

Bournemouth might get a goal at Chelsea, disallowed on VAR but could well be given.

You really couldn't make this season up. Chelsea trying to relegate us more than Arsenal with some of their results in recent weeks.

Edit: Goal given. Losing so meekly at Chelsea is looking poor now.

Yep, Bournemouth 1 up

Southampton can easily play there way out of the bottom 3, things happen very fast in the Premiership, decision taken instantly, managers don't get the time they do in other divisions, Dean needs to sort this.

7 shots, 0 on target, 1 corner.

Criminal.

Three games to save his job I reckon, or give somebody else the chance to get their players in, in January.

Dean has got his excuse ready though I can hear it now.  ‘We are coming into the game and get the penalty, score that and it changes everything but you cannot miss that at this level.’

'Why didn't Kodjia take the penalty?' now trumps 'Why didn't Barry take the penalty?'

Our best player should be able to score a penalty. Papering over the cracks anyway

Is anyone else starting to wonder, “Did we get promoted before we were ready?” After all, we only came fifth in the Championship, and were lucky to get promoted. Perhaps the plan (?) was to win the Championship this season, and get promoted because we deserved to.

I don't agree sorry.  If we hadn't gone up, we'd have had an even bigger rebuilding job to do, as Grealish and McGinn wouldn't be here now.
...and?

Still waiting for how we were lucky, who deserved to be in the playoffs more than us and who out of Albion and Derby in the playoffs were better than us?

Crap Villa. Telly turned off.

No positives. A Lambert eqsue performance, again.

I really want Dean to succeed. He looks lost right now.

How do we always end up with the same problems regardless of the team or manager?

Not concerned about the corners. Like throw-ins, we're clueless with them.

He was unhappy it didn't get retaken for enchroachment so imagine he'll be using that as his get out.

I felt worse when lost to Wigan 3-0 last January and pretty bad when lost to Brentford and Albion in successive games in February and we’re sitting in mid table in the championship.

Saying all that, its been a shit couple of weeks post Man U game. We haven’t really laid a glove on these today. Next 3 games will define our season I think. I would take any kind of scrappy win against Southampton next week.

This coupled with playing players out of form and sticking to a system that isn’t working.

I’m worried about Norwich with pukki scoring again. Watford continue to look better than their results but hopefully Pearson will kill off any chances of the run I’ve been worrying about.

19th Norwich are not cut adrift, and are doing a pretty damn good stint at Leicester right now.

He's just very very average. Can't believe we actually spend 15m on him. He's a 5m standard player.
