Wesley.
-
Conor injured?
-
Blades: Henderson, Baldock, Stevens, Fleck, O'Connell, Basham, Lundstram, Egan, Norwood, McGoldrick, Mousset.
Subs: L. Freeman, McBurnie, Sharp, Jagielka, Osborn, Moore, Bešić.
-
Don’t lose Villa.
-
Jesus hause and lansbury start wtf?
This is a very wierd team selection by smith. Chester no where ti be seen
-
I’d prefer Hause to Konsa.
-
Come on you Villa boys!
-
We don't have a striker on the bench. Here's hoping!
-
We don't have a striker on the bench. Here's hoping!
I know Kod isn't the player he once was but that's harsh!
-
Anyone know what's happened with Conor? Nothing was mention in the press conference.
Wesley. Please turn up today.
-

I've no issue with the centre back selection . Konsa has been very poor in recent weeks and Hause will give us better balance. Big ask mind, first start of the season and I suspect it's the first time this duo have played together?
Midfield is a strange one. We look horribly short of mobility in there. Lansbury has been getting minutes lately but without overly impressing. Luiz can't have any complaints in any case. I think we will be overrun in midfield today.
-
I think thats been abit harsh. Konsa was thrown in and I think he done well. Hause for me is so clumsy at times.
Huge gamble for me.
-
Got to say that’s more or less the team I’d have picked. Hause and Engels a well balanced and solid pair.
Angela deserves a chance and luiz was absolute toilet against Leicester.
-

I thought Davis was fit now? He's been out for 2 months - Smith said he'd be back in about 3-4 weeks?
-
I have a feeling this will be the final piece of mouldy bread on this shit sandwich a week.
-

Villa injuriestime is not like ordinary time.
-
If Conor is injured, fair enough, otherwise Lansbury playing is a strange decision. Wesley must be the first name on the team sheet, oh dear!!
Having watched Watford I think we can forget any easy games. You could see the nerves in the Liverpool players and think they got away with one there.
-
Dean Smith is the new Tinkerman.
But not Wesley, never Wesley....
Good luck, boys!
-
If we lose today I am going to run stark bollock naked around my estate tonight which is quite a big estate. I wont be telling neighbours what I am doing but if I do get arrested by the local bill could you please testify that I did it as a bet and not because I am some kind of pervert.
-
Would have been my pick other than maybe Lansbury but I suppose he deserves a chance.
-
Weird having watched Hourihanes interview with Pravda an hour ago about looking forward to a game in South Yorkshire (having been a Barnsley boy before us) and now he's nowhere to be seen!
-
He may have got a knock after the interviews were done, or he may have woken up feeling ill.
-
Conor must be crocked. No way Smith would have left him out of the squad.
-
Hourihane the wrong player for this game anyway imo.
-
Not very confident.
-
Is anyone else starting to wonder, “Did we get promoted before we were ready?” After all, we only came fifth in the Championship, and were lucky to get promoted. Perhaps the plan (?) was to win the Championship this season, and get promoted because we deserved to.
-
Knowing our luck with injuries he will have had a freak yachting accident during the early warm up.
-
Just don't lose. Please. I have to suffer Walsall vs Macclesfield this afternoon.
-

I don't agree sorry. If we hadn't gone up, we'd have had an even bigger rebuilding job to do, as Grealish and McGinn wouldn't be here now.
-
How were we lucky? We smashed the league once we had a couple of defenders in and deservedly won the play-offs. I think we went up a year earlier than most at the club expected but it was deserved.
-
Yeah same. I don’t think it really matters that much how you go up, it’s what you do next. We’re in better shape than Norwich, having kept our best players and spent big to add others. We’re just imbalanced. 2 good signings in January will see us right.
-
Smith could have went with Nakamba and Luiz again, which for me never works but he's at least trying something different. Lansbury is obviously in for Hourihane.
As for the forward department, no comment.
-
Luiz was atrocious against Leicester, worst performance of the game for me.
-
Be interested to see if Grealish plays more centrally today with McGinn off the right and AEG off the left
-
This is on RMC sport at 9pm but we've got neighbours coming round for an 'apéritif' (cue three hours of drinking and eating charcuterie and olives) so I'm not allowed to put the telly on.
So are there any pms?
-
SJM fouled after a min

Depends if the neigbours are female.
-
Grealish fouled after 3 mins
-
Sheff U should have had 2 yellows by now
-
SJM fouled after a min
Only need took 3 for grealish
-
Afternoon all. Gerrrinnto em!
-
While Luiz was bad against Leicester, who wasnt other than Heaton?
The result today, which I think we can, will have to be grounded out, and play tough, as SheffUtd will be.
Get at them!
-
Sheffield United leaving gaps like we do. Very open. There will be a lot of goals today
-

No, we absolutely needed to get up as soon as possible. 1st or 5th, it was always going to be tough first season back.
-
There's been approx 238 throw ins so far.
-
Does our formation look any different?
-
Got Lee Hendrie as the co commentator on DAZN. He loves us, which is nice.
Come on Villa. Haven't settled yet.
-
Must be a contender for the most boring opening 10 mins of the season in professional football.
-
SJM fouled, yellow card.
-
Correct yellow card for that niggly fuck, Norwood.
-
What is the point of knocking a long high ball to Wesley ?
-
Maybe HOURIHANE and Chester ate vice captain and captain Tuesday night
-
Does our formation look any different?
No same as it ever was
-
Villa have never lost to Sheffield United in premier league. Keep s of death hate it when they throw stats like this
Wesley does what he does best ge5 nowhere near the ball and fouls the opposition player to take a sting out of our attack.
-
Maybe HOURIHANE and Chester ate vice captain and captain Tuesday night
Chester ate the vice captain?
-
What a sloppy pass that was. Lucky we got away with that.
Our passing looks absolutely dreadful so far
-
Fleck booked
-
Wesley awful.
-
Fred poleaxed there
-
Dirty fucker, Fleck. The audacity to claim it wasn't a foul. Late. Yellow card.
-
Is that right? We haven't scored a headed goal so far this season?
-
WE look woeful going forward
-
Sheffield fans feeling hard done by by the ref. Good
-
I know it's early, but I'd consider Kodjia or even Trez already.
-
WE look woeful going forward
We do, not string two passes together yet
-
That Fleck tackle is the sort of thing I meant when I was saying if you gave Targett a red for last weekend then you have to give loads of them, ok Fleck was on his feet not sliding but he's still coming across the player late and catching him on the follow-through.
-
We're all a bit hit and hope again.
-
Cheers our kids! You know who you are.
-
Hause has looked decent so far. Good on him.
-
We look scared.
-
It's obvious we've come for a 0-0 here.
-
We are awful to watch this half so far.
-
It's very unimpressive, from both sides admittedly but then I don't give a shit how Sheff Utd play.
-
The commentators saying we haven't scored a headed goal this season.
-
It's obvious we've come for a 0-0 here.
I’d take that
-
This is on RMC sport at 9pm but we've got neighbours coming round for an 'apéritif' (cue three hours of drinking and eating charcuterie and olives) so I'm not allowed to put the telly on.
So are there any pms?
I look forward to reading your write up about the after effects in the Off Topic Foulage Thread sometime late morning tomorrow.
-
I'll take 2-0 and steel the points.
-
It's obvious we've come for a 0-0 here.
I’d take that
So would I. Would keep us out of bottom 3 ahead of the two massive home games.
-
I don't think there's much to that on Guilbert but there's definitely an arm to the face so it's got to be stopped as a head injury, it's really poor from the ref to let play go on.
-
Get up Guilbert for crying out loud. I don't care how much it hurts there's no reason to be rolling around on the floor like that.
-
Sheffield fans are a bunch of cocks aren’t they
-
Norwich winning
-
Jesus, the fucking state of us.
-
It's obvious we've come for a 0-0 here.
I’d take that
So would I. Would keep us out of bottom 3 ahead of the two massive home games.
At some point we are going to have start winning at places where we're not expected to.
-

I’d take that

Newcastle will do. Haven't won there since 2005.
-
Nearly half an hour and no shots from either side
-
Wesley awful.
Lee Hendrie not impressed with him at all. Poor game
-
Jesus, the fucking state of us.
Relly, really terrible. Look like relegation certs playing like this.
-
It's obvious we've come for a 0-0 here.
I’d take that
So would I. Would keep us out of bottom 3 ahead of the two massive home games.
At some point we are going to have start winning at places where we're not expected to.
Norwich winning at Leicester is a classic example of this, and why I think we're currently looking in real trouble.
-

Newcastle will do. Haven't won there since 2005.
Was that the 3-0 Dyer and Bowyer scrap game?
-
Come on Wes show some balls
-
Dean will be on thin ice If we don’t win against Southampton and Norwich.
-
Wesley needs to be nowhere near our penalty box. Get up the pitch, lad.
-
Enda Stephens is better on the wing than either El Ghazi or Trezeguet. How did that happen?
-
2nd to every ball.
Rolling around on the floor
Wesley shit.
Awful
-
It's obvious we've come for a 0-0 here.
I’d take that

Norwich winning at Leicester is a classic example of this, and why I think we're currently looking in real trouble.
Well we'll see if that holds but Norwich only have 4 points away all season (same as us) and they've had a much easier schedule on the road.
We have aways at Watford, Burnley, Southampton, Newcastle etc so I'm reasonably confident we can get draws or the odd win from those games.
-
If we are going to avoid getting sucked right into the relegation fight, we are going to have to string together several games where we play much better and get the results you'd expect from those performances.
We just don't look like ever doing that.
I reckon we are going down unless there is some serious surgery in January.
-
This game needs a goal. A Villa goal. Just fucking do something Villa!
-
Jack is wasted playing out there in games like this. Needs to be in midfield to really have an effect on things.
-
Dean will be on thin ice If we don’t win against Southampton and Norwich.
The only thin ice he’ll be on will be as he steps out on the Bodymoor training pitch early on a late December morning, and rightly so.
-
Sounds like we’re in peak form...
-
It's obvious we've come for a 0-0 here.
I’d take that
So would I. Would keep us out of bottom 3 ahead of the two massive home games.

Was that the 3-0 Dyer and Bowyer scrap game?
It was indeed. We should've won there the following season but Barry skied over a penalty in the last minute. Haven't come close since.
Mad how bad it's up there when you compare it to Sunderland and Boro where we win most seasons when we play them.
-
To be fair we have kept them pretty quiet so far
-
Jack is wasted playing out there in games like this. Needs to be in midfield to really have an effect on things.
This
-
Great game so far, we're playing really well.
-
The best you can say is that at least they haven't scored.
-
We are morphing into a hoof ball team.
How the fuck has that happened?
-
Dean will be on thin ice If we don’t win against Southampton and Norwich.

Oooh who took the jam outta your donut.
-
Ghazi shit
-
The problem here is that we're static and too many passes are being floated, which means the recipient has no time to do anything than try to protect the ball.
-
Actually put a few passes together there
-
El Ghazi has been awful so far.
-

We just don't look like ever doing that.
I reckon we are going down unless there is some serious surgery in January.
Weren't we doing that in late September? Draw v Burnley where performance was good but we were sloppy defending crosses then two back to back wins v Norwich and Brighton (that one was fortunate).
Anyway 7 points from 9 and things looking good and then the fixture list gives us Man. City and Liverpool. Strong 4 points from Newcastle-Man. United and then we get Chelsea and Leicester straight away.
Next 10 games is big chance to build up proper momentum.
-
God awful. We are so sloppy and as to the hoofball, it feels like Steve Bruce is manager again.
-
el ghazi has been so poor
-
The best you can say is that at least they haven't scored.
Seems inevitable
-
Only one shot in the match so far.
-
Chelsea 0-0 with Bournemouth is worrying me a little I have to admit. Surely they're not going to f*** us over again like they did v West Ham and Everton in last few games.
-
Hoof, hoof, hoof.
What happened to the fucking movement?
-
It's obvious we've come for a 0-0 here.
I’d take that
So would I. Would keep us out of bottom 3 ahead of the two massive home games.
At some point we are going to have start winning at places where we're not expected to.
Norwich winning at Leicester is a classic example of this, and why I think we're currently looking in real trouble.
Leicester 1-1 now.
-
Dean will be on thin ice If we don’t win against Southampton and Norwich.
The only thin ice he’ll be on will be as he steps out on the Bodymoor training pitch early on a late December morning, and rightly so.
Oooh who took the jam outta your donut.
:-)
He’s got to have at least the season though surely. To be honest I think we’ll do well enough in the next few games to make it no issue anyway. I really don’t like promoted managers getting the boot the first season up unless they’re overseeing a season like our 15-16
-
We need to pulp these or the knives will be out.
-
This will be so far down the match order on MOTD it will be on Sportsnight.
-
Has Targett managed to pass to a villa shirt yet? So many miscued passes even when not under pressure!?
-
We are morphing into a hoof ball team.
How the fuck has that happened?
Might as well try it, as Wesley cant get on the end of anything, so hoof it up and cut out Wesley giving a foul
Get. Kodjia. On!
-
Hoof, hoof, hoof.
What happened to the fucking movement?
After 1-4 last week team is low on confidence so you do tend to knock more long balls to get out quicker when that happens.
Nice solid draw would be fine by me but we do need to get things going when we attack as Sheffield will have a decent spell at some stage.
-
El Ghazi has been awful so far.
Hasn't he just. My wife just turned to me and said 'you're not a fan, are you?' as I sighed for the tenth time this half.
We look a bit safety first today. Lansbury and Nakamba look so one paced. Grealish not involved, really.
Step it up, Villa.
-
Yet again he started Wesley.
Smith out.
-
I think we’ve done ok. Playing one of the form sides in the league and we’ve shut out everything they’ve thrown at us. Heaton hasn’t had a save to make. Just need a bit more spark in the midfield
-
To be fair we have kept them pretty quiet so far
Our two centre halves have been excellent and Nakamba is doing a good job in front of them.
-
Wesley really is a massive waste of space.
He contributes so little.
-
This game isn’t very inspirational is it. Two Championship sides.
-
No corners for Sheffield so far.
That's good news considering we've been sloppy defending them in last few games.
-
Christ I've only been watching 5 minutes and it's just hoof, hoof, hoof.
-
Has Targett managed to pass to a villa shirt yet? So many miscued passes even when not under pressure!?
I'd rather have Enda Stevens, that's for sure.
Maybe he'll come good. He certainly has a decent understanding with Jack.
-
To be fair we have kept them pretty quiet so far
This is the best I’ve seen from our defence for a long time. Am wondering if Mings has been the problem or we have just missed Engels
Our two centre halves have been excellent and Nakamba is doing a good job in front of them.

Last weekend it was noticeable how he'd at most break into a laboured jog when getting back down the pitch.
-
Leicester level with Norwich.
-
Hause is the only bright spot this half, he's done very well this half.
-
Yep defensively we look good. I think Engels and Hause could be the answer but I also think Engels is one of those players who makes whoever he plays with better.
-
Another game that's passing Wesley by.
-
Fucking hell, we have a break on and Wesley is 50 yards behind and not making any attempt to get forward.
He really is wank.
-
It’s coming up to half time quiz time.
Will Dean Smith
A. Make a tactical substitution in order to try and effect the pattern of play.
B. Wait til we are a goal behind and then make a substitution.
C. Do nothing al long as its 0 0
-
This game isn’t very inspirational is it. Two Championship sides.
It's really poor standard. Might be no harm after the chaos last week but with the ball we are offering zilch. AEG and Wes could both come off at the break
-
Non-eventful first half. Highlight appears to be that we may have found our most 'reliable' defensive unit -
Engels Hause
Nakamba
These 3 have looked good so far.
-
They are trying to cheat, good sign they are getting frustrated with us
-
I don't know why AEG starts over Trez.
-
Is it right we haven't had an attempt on goal yet?
-
Their fans are proper twats.
-
Can we have a shot please, Villa?
-
HT 0-0 the only positive is we've looked ok defensively, going forward we've been woeful.
-
Is it right we haven't had an attempt on goal yet?
Not even close to one
-
Ugly half but I'll take it.
1-0 will win this though and they've got Billy Sharp on the bench so long way to go.
-
So a blatant push in the back is OK. The officiating in this division is just as piss poor as The Championship.
-
45 minutes of boreball. Oh well...
-
How the hell wasnt that a foul on grealish??
-
At least we’re not losing at half time.
-
Good lord El Ghazi, that was dreadful.
-
Wesley off please.
-
I don’t want to hear anything negative about Wesley. The tactics are shit, the team is average, he’s totally isolated with two or three guys on him.
-
What a honking great pile of shit.
-
I'm hoping Snodgrass can win it for us at the end. This has been very poor.
-
We have absolutely nothing going forward.
AEG is having a stinker, Wesley is basically immobile and we don't look like we'll score if we play till midnight.
However, for all that, he won't change anything at half time.
-
Is Wesley lazy or just really easily gassed? He’s leaving jack to chase down the keeper. Ridiculous.
-
Is Kodjia on the bench?
If so I think we need to sub Wes and bring him on, Wesley sounds like he needs to be pulled out of it at the moment.
-
I’d be tempted to bring jack into the middle for Angela and get Kodj on the wing
-
I don’t want to hear anything negative about Wesley.
Probably best to avoid the match thread then.
-
El Ghazi and Wesley.
Oh dear.
-
El Gazi very poor in possession.
-
How the hell wasnt that a foul on grealish??
I hope the ref sees that at half time - Jeezus!
-
We have absolutely nothing going forward.
AEG is having a stinker, Wesley is basically immobile and we don't look like we'll score if we play till midnight.
However, for all that, he won't change anything at half time.
Wesley is nowhere near as good as Immobile.
-
El Gazi very poor in possession.
He ain’t too hot out of possession either.
-
Is it right we haven't had an attempt on goal yet?
Neither have they to be honest for all the huffing and puffing
Not even close to one
-
Tres is our most in form and threatening attacker. And it’s one of those games where aeg does less than nothing there’s no in between with him.
-
I’d be tempted to bring jack into the middle for Angela and get Kodj on the wing
Yes would go for that although Trez coming on is probably most likely option. Can't see us changing it while it remains 0-0 however.
-
Drab, Villa. Fuck me. Get Kodjia on, or why have him on the bench every week?
A disjointed performance, but we've looked ok at the back.
Offered nothing going forward, and El Ghazi and Wesley should really be hooked at half time.
El Ghazi is our most frustrating player, in my opinion. Could be a star, but looks lightweight and off the pace more often than not. Garbage today.
-
A quick look at the stats at half time.
SU: 256 passes. 76% accuracy.
AV: 181 Passes 61% accuracy.
Doesn't make good reading. We seem to have slipped into a coma since the heroics at Man United. On the bright side 0 goals conceded by half time is a good stat. Every cloud and all that.
-
Takeaways.. I don't like having Jack and SJM on opposite sides. We haven't scored a header all season. We're on the ground a lot. I'm bored.
-
I agree with usav, I'm not sure what people expect from Wesley here. He's been working back defensively and almost everything that's gone to him has been a hoof when he's alone with 2-3 defenders. Jack is too deep to offer any meaningful support and AEG has been dreadful whenever the ball has gone near to him. Lansbury and McGinn have barely been involved and the little bits where they've got on the ball they've not given us any control.
-
Tight game, thought we did okay, better organised at the back, Sheff Utd playing to there strengths which is based on a strong team spirit and knowing each others game, we have to knock them out of that which we can do by raising the tempo and forcing them into errors, see how well they stand up to that when under pressure, think we can win this maybe, need Jack to have more impact on the game, the only really creative player out there today, this game will open up in the second half, can't see it being a draw.
-
Get El Ghazi off and Trezeguet on.
-
I don’t want to hear anything negative about Wesley.
Probably best to avoid the match thread then.
I usually do to be honest. Watching today though, I’m flabbergasted people think this is on him. Yes, there are things that he could do better, but tactically, there is nothing there for him. He has two big bastards marking him, he’s totally isolated and even if he does get to the ball first, so there is nothing on.
We should switch to 4-4-2, get Trez on.
-
Hause and Engels have looked really solid first half
-
Defence has done well but my one fear is when balls come into the box we head it to the penalty spot/ the D on the edge of the box. So far we've got away with it but it's crying out for a Sheff Utd player to take advantage.
Going forward we're toothless. Even when Wesley manages to hold the ball up, we manage to lose it in seconds. AEG is no winger, I'm not even sure he's a footballer. He either needs to move further inside or replace him with Trez. Jack may as well not be on the pitch, isolated on the left as we're focusing our attack down the right.
-
Engels is the only one to play well in the first half. Heaton, Hause and Nakamba got better as the half wore on, the rest were rubbish for the entirety.
How about replacing Wesley with Trez and putting him and AEG on wings with Jack through the middle ?
-
I don’t want to hear anything negative about Wesley.

If he does get to the balm first, I hope he shares it with the rest of us.
-
Defending, very good. Kept our shape in midfield and forced them wide, where they've slowed it down rather than risk a ball in, as Hause and Engles are defending well against the high ball.
The issue has been in transition. McGinn has given up cheap ball, El Ghazi isn't with it and Wesley doesn't occupy the centre halves. Jack isolated wide.
But having given up 50 chances in the last two games, we've not given them anything.
We need a forward with pace to play off the shoulder, which won't happen at half time, but we do need to fund a way of getting Jack involved.
Cold and dull so far. I'll take the latter. First goal wins this.
-

I'm not blaming our performance on Wesley. He doesn't get decent service, that's true. But it's also true that he's not much cop. What he is is a poor player who doesn't get decent service. He's not the only poor player though, far from it. We didn't spend our money too well.
-

As an aside why doesn’t QuickPath let you type ball?
-
At least Wes has managed to pass to a Villa player a few time.
AEG has been fucking useles.
-
We have absolutely nothing going forward.
AEG is having a stinker, Wesley is basically immobile and we don't look like we'll score if we play till midnight.
However, for all that, he won't change anything at half time.
Smith is a 60min man normally but I do think he does need to make tactical changes at the break. Sheff Utd are very average, first goal wins this game and we haven't a hope of getting it with the same set up.
I'd bring Luiz in for AEG and shift both McGinn and Grealish a lot further up the pitch behind their wing backs. Could also bring in Kodjia for Wes, I've no faith in JK but he couldn't be any worse.
We have three players playing well (Engels, Hause, Nakamba), everyone else average to anonymous.
-
El Ghazi has been atrocious
Grealish playing in the wrong position
has either team had one attempt at goal in that half ?
-
The midfield 3 need to do more for me in helping us get the ball up the pitch. The long ball to Wesley isn’t great as even when he managed to hold it up he’s got nowhere near him.
Hause has looked solid.
-
I agree with usav, I'm not sure what people expect from Wesley here.
The best you can say about him is that he's not noticeably the worst player on the pitch. This is mainly to do with everybody else being just as bad, rather than the fact that he's done anything well.
-
Wesley is not the worst player on the pitch today
he has plenty of competition out there
-
No changes for either side
-
El Ghazi has been atrocious
Grealish playing in the wrong position
has either team had one attempt at goal in that half ?
Does their shot which hit Hause count?
-
Wesley is not the worst player on the pitch today

Exactly. Centrebacks aside, we have been shit.....and the manager needs to wake up as well.
-
El Ghazi has been atrocious

They've been credited with 3 shots, 0 on target.
-
They should have scored
-
Sheffield come out flying, we need to wake up otherwise we will be 1 down shortly and in big trouble.
-
My stream has changed to Arabic commentary. Enjoying it.
-

Exactly. Centrebacks aside, we have been shit.....and the manager needs to wake up as well.
We’ve looked the best at CB for a few weeks because they appear so far just to be doing the simple things well. Other than that we look very poor.
-
McGinn needs dropping as well, been awful for weeks.
-
GUilbert great defending there
-
Shit 1-0.
-
Look at that from Wesley. Is he even a real footballer?
-
They're not moving to give the man on the ball options.
Fucking run you lazy bastards!
-
Sheffield come out flying, we need to wake up otherwise we will be 1 down shortly and in big trouble.
There you go, 1-0. Fleck. Could well be game over now given lack of confidence in the team.
-
McGinn needs dropping as well, been awful for weeks.
Too much is being asked of him. So much of his game is based on energy and drive and you just cannot keep it up when you also throw in games for Scotland. He needs a proper rest.
-
That’ll be the game done. When we get on bad runs of form under Dean we look fucking awful.
-
Game over.
Cause Smith will still make no changes.
-
Fuck off man. We had that coming
-
So crap from Wesley there
Garbage from us thereoi
-
It’s coming up to half time quiz time.
Will Dean Smith
A. Make a tactical substitution in order to try and effect the pattern of play.
B. Wait til we are a goal behind and then make a substitution.
C. Do nothing al long as its 0 0
Bingo
-
Bollocks.
-
We just seem unable to grind out results.
-
A manager worth his salt would switch things now. But we wont. Not until the 67th minute at least.
-
Pathetic from Dean once again.
-
Lansbury switched off there
-
When did we become so lazy, timid, sloppy and out and out inept?
-
Dean Smith is coaching himself out of a job. He looks devoid of any ideas. He’s caught himself in one of his own traps.
-

C. Do nothing al long as its 0 0
Bingo
He'll now have a ten minute conference with Terry, O' Kelly and Cutler on the bench and we probably won't see a change until 2-0. Then it will just be like for like.
Need Trez on and more direct running in final third. Might give Jack some more space aswell.
-
Grow some all’s smith new s blood take Wesley off or play two strikers
-
What the fuck does Smith say to them at half time? Anything? Maybe he just whines about the officiating.
-
Dean Smith is coaching himself out of a job. He looks devoid of any ideas. He’s caught himself in one of his own traps.
This formation just isn't working, and he's seemingly devoid of all ideas as to how to change things.
-
Dean Smith is coaching himself out of a job. He looks devoid of any ideas. He’s caught himself in one of his own traps.
Shouldn't laugh, but this tickled me! ;)
-
What the fuck was that?
-
Well we’ve not had a shot so he has to change something or it’s already game over
-
It seems to take us ages to get going after HT, what do they say to the players, Sheff Utd come out and immediately step up the pace, that should be us. crazy.
-
There is no chance of Kodjia coming on until the very end and the game is lost.
-
We had a shot!
-
Done from a back heel. Ffs!
-
Someone scores on the first shot on target.
-
The curse of the contract extension
-
3rd game in a row we have conceded within a few mins of the restart.
-
Smith questions getting bigger
-
No one tracked Flecks run from midfield, McGinn at fault? As most of us said at half time Smith needed to change things, will have to be a reactive change now.
-
Do they put mogadon in the half time drinks? We've been so lazy and half arsed for ages.
-
We had a shot!!
-
Wes actually has a shot into side netting. A little better at least.
-
Decent from Wesley
-
Unlucky Wes
-
It seems to take us ages to get going after HT, what do they say to the players, Sheff Utd come out and immediately step up the pace, that should be us. crazy.
Our last three games now we've given up a goal in the first 5 minutes of the second half. Mason Mount, Johnny Evans and now Jack Fleckin Fleck.
-
Wesley fucking score you cock!
-
The decision to not have decent back up for Wesley is disastrous.
-
Tactical changes to affect the game Dean?
-
Come on Wes
-
is Dean Smith the shitest manager we’ve ever had for half time talks
-
Even if we had a half decent forward we’d be so much better. Like even someone like Danny Ings who has done really well in a poor Southampton side.
-
Another shot, it's like watching Brazil '70 now.
-
The decision to not have decent back up for Wesley is disastrous.
I think Davis was the backup plan?
-
Hopeless absolutely hopeless weskey
-
Lansbury is miles off the pace.
-
Almost on the hour now, 1 shot, a tactical masterclass from Dean here.
-
Tactical changes to affect the game Dean?
When you've had zero shots on target after an hour then to me it does feel obvious to bring on the two attacking players off the bench.
Leave it much longer and it's going to be 2-0 and a far more difficult task for subs to make an impact in.
-
Grealish bad miss
-
Playing players so desperately out of form and when criticised digging your heels in only ends one way.
So many managers lose the role through stubborness I hoped (and still hope) that Dean is more progressive.
-
At least AEG's woken up a bit.
-
Ok, a couple of chances finally....
-
At least AEG's woken up a bit.
is Dean Smith the shitest manager we’ve ever had for half time talks
Close but I think Lambert still edges it.
-
Why has my stream gone from Engerlish to Arabic?
-
McBurnie coming on, we do nothing.
-
The decision to not have decent back up for Wesley is disastrous.
I think Davis was the backup plan?
I am not sure Davis was an adequate back up in the Championship.
Wesley may well be decent given time, but he is being flogged to death up front and he probably needs a break.
-
Wesley is wearing Diane Abbott's other pair.
-
Lansbury looks lost.
Changes please, Dean.
-
The decision to not have decent back up for Wesley is disastrous.
I think Davis was the backup plan?
He played about 4 games last season. It was simply a decision we got wrong so not quite the perfect transfer window many here and elsewhere were patting themselves on the back over.
Anyway Sheffield making a change before us, McBurnie coming on.
-
Lansbury looks lost.
Changes please, Dean.
I honestly haven't seen lansbury yet.
-
The decision to not have decent back up for Wesley is disastrous.
I think Davis was the backup plan?
Kodjia? Worth a try? I realise that its not easy for Wesley, but he just isn't doing it so he needs subbing
-
Lansbury has done the square root of fuck all.
-
Mines just lagging constantly, and to be honest it's a more entertaining watch than us
-
What a flop tactical mastermind move was playing lansbury.
-
Do something Dean FFS.
-
Why has my stream gone from Engerlish to Arabic?
Because our tactics are far clearer in Arabic
-
So a manager makes a change, because he has seen that our 2 Centre backs are getting it too easy
-
Commentators keep pointing out that Wesley isn't a target man. But he isn't quick either, and his off the ball play generally is frequently shite.
So what exactly is he supposed to be good at?
-
Dean Smith sits on his hands
-
We have not even looked second best today. 19th best, possibly.
-
There's no way Lansbury can last more than an hour so he's a cert to be the one to come off.
-
Making a fucking change smuth you clown before we concede a second. Its coming ffs
-
Commentators keep pointing out that Wesley isn't a target man. But he isn't quick either, and his off the ball play generally is frequently shite.
So what exactly is he supposed to be good at?
Answers on a postcard.
-
Targett, also. 16 million pounds? Fuck me. Not a terrible player, but isn't solid, no pace, doesn't really have any chance to get forward and cross the ball away from home.
We just aren't looking very good. Definitely in a relegation scrap.
-
Dean do you have another fucking plan??
-
i think we really are going to do a Fulham. Very very poor.
-
Yellow for Hause.
-
That looked pretty 50/50 to me.
-
Commentators keep pointing out that Wesley isn't a target man. But he isn't quick either, and his off the ball play generally is frequently shite.
So what exactly is he supposed to be good at?
I would agree, Wes is not a lone striker, he looks lost and clueless, he needs somebody in front of him.
-
Luiz coming on
-
Doug coming on.
-
Targett, also. 16 million pounds? Fuck me. Not a terrible player, but isn't solid, no pace, doesn't really have any chance to get forward and cross the ball away from home.
We just aren't looking very good. Definitely in a relegation scrap.
Did you expect anything else. I will be ecstatic at 17th and devastated by 18th.
-
That's a shit yellow card, both went high.
-
Why has my stream gone from Engerlish to Arabic?
Because our tactics are far clearer in Arabic
I think it's because we're playing from right to left in the second half.
-
Good management from Dean, shore things up and hold on to the result we've got.
-
Dean do you have another fucking plan??
Nakamba, Jack, SJM and Lansbury are all center of the park players. We have them plopped into a 4-3-3 and it clearly isn't working.
edit: ..and Luiz
-
Angela the player off
-
Baldock has been excellent for them.
Overall, they've just been better than us. Alot sharper.
-
Luiz for lansburt thats goung to get us a goal great move dean >:(
-
God, this was a game we really needed to be pragmatic. Two up top at the most. Shite.
-
Going back to the bad old days.
Championship beckons again.
Mini revolution required in January or we’re sunk.
-
Kod is coming on!
-
Kodj coming on!!!
-
Targett booked
-
Come on Kodj!
-
Wes off
-
El Ghazi has been simply dreadful.
-
We’re shocking. There’s no movement, just plenty of passing balls sideways until we lose possession. It’s painful to watch. I don’t think the formation is working either. Just very glum really.
-
Targett with another late challenge, yellow. Three in his last three so looks like he wants xmas or new year off.
Wes off for Kodj. At least it's something different.
-
Kodjia coming on
-
I'd have given them a run out together, it's not like it could be any less effective.
-
Targett booked. Good excuse to take him off not that we need one.
-
If Danger scores we riot.
-
Targett, also.
Hmm, probably not, in response to your question.
I thought Smith would be a little bit more creative in his tactics. Certainly less stubborn when it came to players not pulling their weight. McGinn has been poor for a while, but hasn't been subbed or dropped.
Anyway, come on Villa.
-
So have we changed system or are we just swapping players around?
-
Come on Kodija. Show us what we have been missing. Please...
-
Wilder is a very good manager. There aren’t many players I would swap for ours but he gets the best out of some pretty average players.
-
So have we changed system or are we just swapping players around?
Business as usual
-
Targett with another late challenge, yellow. Three in his last three so looks like he wants xmas or new year off.
Diving in when miles out of position, his trademark.
-
I'd have given them a run out together, it's not like it could be any less effective.
I'd have played them together, play Wes just at the back of Kods, poor judgement in my opinion
-
fuck off 2-0
-
Game over, 2-0.
Fleck again.
-
Look at that... I said 67th minute subs and we had both within 2-3 minutes. Can read him like a book - Absolute bollocks Dean!
Needs to start being proactive rather than reactive, or he's going to be in the bus queue before he knows it!
2-0 now too.
-
Garbage
-
With Burnley winning we’re getting cut adrift. Looking grim
-
Bollockoffomy
-
We are absolutely shit. Game over
-
Fleckin’ Fleck!
-
First time this season i've been really fucked off with the result and performance. No excuses for this shit today.
-
Game over. Not that it wasn't already
-
Pathetic
-
Fucking clueless. Pathetic.
-
Cannot see us staying up. As unpopular as my opinion will be this is typical dean. You either win or lose.
-
I get the feeling were very much fucked.
-
Let them score again, then fight back. Foolproof plan.
-
Terrible, pure and simple.
-
Fuck off. Dismal defending.
-
First time this season i've been really fucked off with the result and performance. No excuses for this shit today.
This
-
No coincidence about soton or Norwich. We’re doing a Fulham.
-
oh god, we're bad.
-
Dean has got a lot to answer for.
-
We are in trouble.
Out thought out fought
-
Another shit show. Pathetic smith this is not good enough
-
Fuck off. Dismal defending.
Down our left again.
-
I’d have hoped that after the surrender against Leicester that we’d have learnt something. It’s clear we haven’t learnt a single bloody thing at all. Poor management.
Sod it, I’m off to drink some toilet duck.
-
With Burnley winning we’re getting cut adrift. Looking grim
Bournemouth nicking a late winner at Chelsea is worrying me aswell. They've dug in there very well even with their injuries by all accounts.
Worrying the season has gone very flat all of a sudden. Not the time given the games we've got coming up. Back to having a real make or break period over it.
-
For the first time this season I'm losing hope. January critical now we are going nowhere except into trouble.
-
Smith had better sort this shit out, or fuck off.
-
Clueless, Smith. Tactical bullshit.
-
Norwich level with Leicester.
-
If this run continues over christmas period (especially considering the upcoming opposition), and a big money offer were to come in for either Jack or SJM, anyone think they might just want to cut their losses and fuck off? I know I would!
Jack is getting nowhere near the Euros playing in a team like this.
-
Terry looks really sheepish.
-
Gonna be a penalty?
-
Might get a penalty here. Will probably miss it.
-
Where is that attacking ‘we always go out to win’ Dean gone. This is not a good sign. If he retreats into his shell he will have to go
-
Got to be a pen surely?!?!
-
Rock solid handball.......................penalty....hand to ball you can see it.
-
Given the pen
-
Do they really need so much time to check? It's clearly a penalty.
-
Handball
-
Watch us miss it
-
PEN
-
Jack going to take it, scored the one in the WBA shoot out comfortably enough.
-
Jack misses
-
Do they really need so much time to check? It's clearly a penalty.
Yep. They have to see if there is any way not to give it. VAR never goes our way!
-
Do they really need so much time to check? It's clearly a penalty.
Think they were checking for offside for the villa player in the middle when he crossed it
-
And you just know in the post match interview it will be the players who didn’t perform and not all anything the manager is doing.
-
That's pathetic from the ref to not give that live, it's clear as you'll ever get and AEG is definitely getting a header on goal. For all the problems, that's why VAR exists.
-
No fancy stuff just smash it
-
Hits the fucking bar
-
FFS.
Sums up the game, got to score that.
Oh for a Barry or Milner penalty take in our squad.
-
Watch us miss it
Sigh!
-
Relegation written all over us
-
So predictable
-
Of course he missed.
-
Jack hits the bar. Think I will too.
-
Relegation written all over us
This, in capital letters
-
AEG off Trez on.
-
Hopefully this will be a shot on target.
Oh fuck!
-
Ffs why didn't Kodjia take it?
-
Jack Jack Jack....why oh why!!!
-
Fuck's saké!
-
Get fucked Jack you cocky prat. What on earth was that supposed to be?
-
To spend the money we've spent in the summer, plus the money we spent after relegation, and to end up with a team not much better than we went down with is some achievement.
-
Jack hits the bar. Think I will too.
Wahey!
-
So Kodjia, who has taken and scored many penalties for us is on the pitch and instead Jack takes it. We deserve everything that’s coming to us.
-
Fuck off football
-
Keep it low you fucking idiot
-
Encroaching
-
Heaton saves
-
Knew he’s miss. Absolutely no need to take the paint off the crossbar.
-
As shit as we've been, you cannot miss a fucking penalty.
-
I'd have put my house on Jack missing that. We're going down.
-
I know it’s seen as lynching territory to question Dean’s future but you only have to look at the opposition dugout to see what a well drilled, tactically aware coach can do with a promoted team.
-
As shit as we've been, you cannot miss a fucking penalty.
you can if you are the villa
-
I don't mind him standing up as captain and taking it, I do mind not being able to hit the fucking target with it.
-
Can see this being 3 or even 4. Our heads have totally dropped after that miss.
-
Second game in a row where not a single player has turned up.
-
Doing a Fulham, arent we?
-
First time I’ve thought it... but we’re starting to look like we’re in the shit now. January can’t come soon enough. Even then, I can’t see us staying up at all.
-
Fucking why is grealish taking pens absplutely ridiculous.
He never takes pens. Why mot give that kodjia who took loads. Have to question the decision makers at villa. First keeping mings on last week and now grealish takin) pens???
-
This is just going to get harder and harder.
-
Luiz trotting back as if he's just finished a marathon.
Atrocious.
Don't like these players much today. Wankers.
-
Bottom 3 at Christmas looking highly likely right now.
-
Time for a new manager or else we are going down.
-
Doing a Fulham, arent we?
if dean can’t get them performing then let’s take the claret and blue glasses off and make the change. We cannot go down again.
-
Doing a Fulham, arent we?
Yep we are. Grealish mcginn been so shit fir weeks
-
Fucking why is grealish taking pens absplutely ridiculous.
He never takes pens. Why mot give that kodjia who took loads. Have to question the decision makers at villa. First keeping mings on last week and now grealish takin) pens???
I suppose he scored in the playoff semi shoot out, but I know what you mean.
-
Time for a new manager or else we are going down.
Two billionaires won’t stand for this much longer. They have to protect their investment
-
One striker, who’s absolutely shite. How thick are we? Even if we fix that glaring mistake in January, which we don’t seem set on doing, the team is shagged and devoid of confidence.
-
Bournemouth might get a goal at Chelsea, disallowed on VAR but could well be given.
You really couldn't make this season up. Chelsea trying to relegate us more than Arsenal with some of their results in recent weeks.
Edit: Goal given. Losing so meekly at Chelsea is looking poor now.
-
We're just not getting better.
-
And Bournemouth have scored
-
Fucking why is grealish taking pens absplutely ridiculous.
He never takes pens. Why mot give that kodjia who took loads. Have to question the decision makers at villa. First keeping mings on last week and now grealish takin) pens???
I suppose he scored in the playoff semi shoot out, but I know what you mean.
it's the fucking stupid backwards skip and jump shit he did.
-
Miserably shit
-
Still no shot on target
-
We’re getting worse at just the wrong time. Can see us heading to the bottom of the table on this form.
-
Think this is the worst I’ve felt since Smith has been manager
-
We've been totally outplayed in every department. Just not remotely good enough.
-
How many corners have we forced today?
-
How weak are we on our left? Targett all over the place and nobody there supporting.
-
Are there three worse teams than us in this division? Because right now I’m struggling to think that there is.
-
Yes but they were doing okay a few weeks ago this is a confidence issue.
-
Hause very tired now...making lots of mistakes
-
Time for a new manager or else we are going down.
Two billionaires won’t stand for this much longer. They have to protect their investment
Starting Wes again today and Jack out wide again says it all. Bye bye Dean.
-
Realistically we need the current bottom 3 to stay there and they all look better than us.
-
Should bring McGinn on and see if can impact the game.
-
Is anyone else starting to wonder, “Did we get promoted before we were ready?” After all, we only came fifth in the Championship, and were lucky to get promoted. Perhaps the plan (?) was to win the Championship this season, and get promoted because we deserved to.
I don't agree sorry. If we hadn't gone up, we'd have had an even bigger rebuilding job to do, as Grealish and McGinn wouldn't be here now.
...and?
-
Realistically we need the current bottom 3 to stay there and they all look better than us.
We’ll find out in the next few weeks.
-
Realistically we need the current bottom 3 to stay there and they all look better than us.
I'm having deja vu.
-
7 shots, 0 on target, 1 corner.
-
'Why didn't Kodjia take the penalty?' now trumps 'Why didn't Barry take the penalty?'
-
It’s a shambles
-
Bournemouth might get a goal at Chelsea, disallowed on VAR but could well be given.
You really couldn't make this season up. Chelsea trying to relegate us more than Arsenal with some of their results in recent weeks.
Edit: Goal given. Losing so meekly at Chelsea is looking poor now.
Yep, Bournemouth 1 up
-
Southampton can easily play there way out of the bottom 3, things happen very fast in the Premiership, decision taken instantly, managers don't get the time they do in other divisions, Dean needs to sort this.
-
7 shots, 0 on target, 1 corner.
Criminal.
-
Three games to save his job I reckon, or give somebody else the chance to get their players in, in January.
-
Dean has got his excuse ready though I can hear it now. ‘We are coming into the game and get the penalty, score that and it changes everything but you cannot miss that at this level.’
-
'Why didn't Kodjia take the penalty?' now trumps 'Why didn't Barry take the penalty?'
Our best player should be able to score a penalty. Papering over the cracks anyway
-
Is anyone else starting to wonder, “Did we get promoted before we were ready?” After all, we only came fifth in the Championship, and were lucky to get promoted. Perhaps the plan (?) was to win the Championship this season, and get promoted because we deserved to.
I don't agree sorry. If we hadn't gone up, we'd have had an even bigger rebuilding job to do, as Grealish and McGinn wouldn't be here now.
...and?
Still waiting for how we were lucky, who deserved to be in the playoffs more than us and who out of Albion and Derby in the playoffs were better than us?
-
Are there three worse teams than us in this division? Because right now I’m struggling to think that there is.
Only consolation is 19th and 20th are starting to get adrift so really just the one place to avoid.
-
Crap Villa. Telly turned off.
No positives. A Lambert eqsue performance, again.
I really want Dean to succeed. He looks lost right now.
-
How do we always end up with the same problems regardless of the team or manager?
-
7 shots, 0 on target, 1 corner.
Not concerned about the corners. Like throw-ins, we're clueless with them.
-
Dean has got his excuse ready though I can hear it now. ‘We are coming into the game and get the penalty, score that and it changes everything but you cannot miss that at this level.’
He was unhappy it didn't get retaken for enchroachment so imagine he'll be using that as his get out.
-
Another game that could have been a 5-0 defeat
-
Too many times this season, the time to make a sub war half time. He doesn't do it.
-
Oh well, at least we haven't just given the manager a massive new contract.
-
I felt worse when lost to Wigan 3-0 last January and pretty bad when lost to Brentford and Albion in successive games in February and we’re sitting in mid table in the championship.
Saying all that, its been a shit couple of weeks post Man U game. We haven’t really laid a glove on these today. Next 3 games will define our season I think. I would take any kind of scrappy win against Southampton next week.
-
Too many times this season, the time to make a sub war half time. He doesn't do it.
This coupled with playing players out of form and sticking to a system that isn’t working.
-
'Why didn't Kodjia take the penalty?' now trumps 'Why didn't Barry take the penalty?'
Our best player should be able to score a penalty. Papering over the cracks anyway
Quite. I'm trying to cope.
-
2-0 flatters us, second half their running game has destroyed us.
-
Three games to save his job I reckon, or give somebody else the chance to get their players in, in January.
I think you are right. The last run of games was always going to be sticky but we’ve been poor today. Confidence looks very low.
-
Is anyone else starting to wonder, “Did we get promoted before we were ready?” After all, we only came fifth in the Championship, and were lucky to get promoted. Perhaps the plan (?) was to win the Championship this season, and get promoted because we deserved to.
I don't agree sorry. If we hadn't gone up, we'd have had an even bigger rebuilding job to do, as Grealish and McGinn wouldn't be here now.
...and?
I don't understand your 'and?' question.
-
Targett is playing two leagues above his ability.
-
Players aren't up to scratch imo

Woohoo, a corner.
-
Are there three worse teams than us in this division? Because right now I’m struggling to think that there is.
Only consolation is 19th and 20th are starting to get adrift so really just the one place to avoid.
I’m worried about Norwich with pukki scoring again. Watford continue to look better than their results but hopefully Pearson will kill off any chances of the run I’ve been worrying about.

19th Norwich are not cut adrift, and are doing a pretty damn good stint at Leicester right now.

Targett is playing two leagues above his ability.
He's just very very average. Can't believe we actually spend 15m on him. He's a 5m standard player.
-
Three games to save his job I reckon, or give somebody else the chance to get their players in, in January.
I think you are right. The last run of games was always going to be sticky but we’ve been poor today. Confidence looks very low.
I think it will come down to the Liverpool game in a few days and then the next Premiership game, that's it.
-
And nothing comes of it you'll be very surprised to know.

Gutless to boot.

I've been waiting for Leicester to score for an hour.

Bournemouth have won

The gamble of starting the season with an injury prone rookie, an ageing injury prone championship player and an expensive overseas player who looks like he would struggle in league 1 is coming back to bite us on the arse.

Yep. Too many players just not up to this league.
-
I’m starting to dislike targett. He looks like a liability, a really unintelligent player, and he’s starting to put in nasty tackles regularly.
-
I see Jack couldn't even give away his shirt today. Much like his passing, misplaced.
-
Is anyone else starting to wonder, “Did we get promoted before we were ready?” After all, we only came fifth in the Championship, and were lucky to get promoted.
You’re right to question my question. It was illogical, and I apologise.

You’re right Malcolm. When Mings comes back I’d like that and mings/Engels in the middle.
