Thatís hilarious! Itís not made explicit in the clip, but clearly no substitution was able to happen as the departing player was sent off before he got off the pitch...

Beeb this morning

English referees have been told not to order substituted players to leave by the nearest touchline if they are concerned it could lead to potential clashes with opposition fans. (Times, subscription required)

When first qualifying as a referee back in the early seventies we were told on the coaching course to always get dismissed players off as near to their own officials as possible.  Any junior game sees supporters of both sides take up positions either side of the pitch.  It's common sense to deal with dismissals that way.  Imagine the flashpoint scenario sending a player off and insist he leave into the middle of a lion's den.  You don't need a genius IQ level to see that.

English refs wouldn't dare.

Fair play to NI.

I immediately thought of Ashley Barnes opting to cross the whole pitch to be subbed against us last week instead of the Wilton lane side of the pitch.
