A much needed 2-1 win I reckon.

They're decent at their place so can't see them not scoring. They may well have key players out and their defence isn't great so can't see us not scoring.

Our record there in recent years is not clever so going with Them 2 (Pukki 2) us 2 (SJM 2).

I'm sure I read somewhere over the week-end that Norwich had lost a key defender with a broken arm and due to injuries they were down to playing their third choice goalkeeper

Norwich 1 Aston Villa2

They've got at least 4 key players out. Big chance that we cannot avoid to pass up to take 3 points.

I can see this being the hardest game we've had so far. No doubt we will have our usual period of excellent play and then the usual backs to the wall job at the end. Hopefully we can hang on through that! I'd love a win though, we have it in us.

Would consider starting Davis for this one and take Wesley out of the firing line.  Douglas for Hourihane and Trezeguet for El Ghazi probably be the only other changes I would make.

Same starting eleven as last weekend for me. We played some good stuff, and should have created more chances than we did. Hopefully this time we'll not only make them, but put them away too. Let the ball do a bit more work and hopefully not tire as much as early.

It’s far too soon for this to be a “must win” but we need to start winning winnable games, however Norwich will be thinking the exact same when they look at their fixture list to see where their next 3pts will be coming from.

This could go either way...I hit Norwich win by mistake in the poll, and I’m going for 1-3 Villa.

It’s not a must win, but the damage to moral a loss could bring does not bare thinking about

Yep, won all three of our games when he went back, two in league and the other 4-1 in league cup in his first season (in hindsight we should've just lost that as it would've spared us the horror of Bradford).

Since then played four, lost four and two of those performances under Steve Bruce were an embarrassment.

Can see this being an entertaining 2-2. They won't sit back and have some technically good midfielders who'll push up to support Pukki. Buendia is a good player and he scored good goal against us at VP on the last day.

We should get more space to counter attack but also could be a game where we struggle physically after 70 minutes.

Important we don't lose and keep Norwich within range. Then it's all on Brighton.

Can't remember us playing there in MON period.

We won there in 12/13 and 13/14 and also league cup in 12/13. All losses since.

They do have lots of defenders injured and also maybe Krul and second choice keeper....trouble is they had loads of injuries for Man. City game.

If Pukki and Buendia are out there they have good chance of beating us.

They had a rake of injuries for the game in which they beat City.

It would appear their strength in depth is of a higher quality than ours.

We will only lose if we make the sort of errors we have been.  Play like we did V Burnley but tighten up at the back and we'll win.

People keep going on about Norwich's Man City win, as if they played them off the park - City had 70% of the possession and 25 shots.  Norwich had 3 shots on target and scored all of them.  19 times out of 20 they lose that game.  It's still a brilliant result for a newly promoted side, obviously, and I'd love us to do something similar when we play them, but let's not pretend it means Norwich are some sort of unbeatable force when playing at Carrow road.

2-1 win.
Title: Re: Norwich v Aston Villa pre-match thread
Post by: postal on October 04, 2019, 01:24:00 PM
they might be down to their 3rd keeper, among other injuries. Even if Pukki was out ( and he's not), they do have other goals in them and Farke will line them up to still be effective

The downside of having to bring in players to cover, they might not be match fit.

We need to win, and its a game that we can win, if the Management apply some sensible game management

Oh and dont start with Wesley.

Also, the beeb have given a factually correct, but nonsense stat: Norwich have lost 19 of the last 20 PL games in which they conceded first.
How is that relevent?  :o

These type of predictions are meaningless.

We will win if we “don’t make mistakes/play to our potential etc” just mean the caveat kicks in if we don’t win.

Bottom line is we have been regularly making mistakes giving goals away and also defending too deep if ahead. Our record there is crap and they are a strong home team. How people think a win is the logical result I have no idea.

There is a lot of talk about luck. I think if you believe you have been unlucky you are entitled to be unhappy but you also have to quickly get over it. Feeling sorry for yourself doesn't get you very far. I recall something SGT once said. If you win on a Saturday feel free to pat yourself on the back all weekend and if you lose feel free to feel sorry for yourself all weekend. But either way once Monday comes around put it in the past get back to work and move on.

Come on Villa boys, let's win this! We need to finish games as strongly as we generally appear to be starting them. We've been competitive away from home, Palace being the poorer of our games, but I expect us to be competitive today. Starting with the extra midfielder at the expence of a winger is the way forward. I suspect that may be Luiz today, though Conor loves playing Norwich and when he's out of the team, no-one has stepped up to be the dead ball specialist that we need (against a shaky Norwich defence, that could be crucial). 3 points ahead of the international break would be great and would set us up nicely for our next home game. UTV!

                 Heaton
Freddy  Engles  Mings  Targett
            Luiz        Nakamba
         SJM     Connor     Jack
                    Wes

I'd go with this too. What's the point of wingers when we don't have a Dion Dublin type forward up front. Give Jack, SJM and Conor license to roam in and around Wesley, and I think we could be much more fruitful.

And based on recent showings, if Wesley is his usual lacklustre self, hook him at HT. Hopefully, he'll start rewarding the faith the gaffer has in him - Starting today!

BBC are saying that, due to a goalkeeping crisis Norwich are going to have to play their third choice keeper, Michael McGovern. He joined them in 2016-17 season, making 20 appearances, then hasn't played for them again until last weekend, when he came on as sub. So we've gotta put him under a lot of pressure.

He had an amazing game against Germany in Euro 2016.

One of his last games for Norwich before last weekend was playing at VP in 2-0 defeat in April 2017. Kodj was amazing in that period, scored twice that day.

Not saying I'm superstitious but can anybody other than Toronto start the Match thread?
That boy is jinxed.
