Job done Villa well done. Dominated the game could have won by a lot more.
-
Is it our year?
-
Has it finished?
-
Well done. Next round at home would be nice.
-
Anyone put their hand up for selection at weekend?
No idea how he did from general play but another goal and assist from Hourihane is hard to ignore.
-
Important win for us, both players and fans.
-
Draw is soon this evening on TalkSport 2.
-
Nice and important to get a win. Need to get another at the weekend.
-
As I said in match thread
69 % possession
27 attempts at goal
3 goals
A win
Job well and truly done
Well done Deano and the team. Hope it's woke a few of the first teamers up for Saturday
-
Well done you Villa boys.
-
Draw is soon this evening on TalkSport 2.
Do you have a stream for that?
-
Dean Smith is a football genius.
-
Conor for me has to come in. He scored one and set up the other. He offers something going forward.

Would you like a pm?
-
Rochdale and ManUre on penalties.
-
Hurray! :)
-
Rochdale and ManUre on penalties.
0% Villa
-
Potential next opponents?
-
Pretty much a freebie passage once the Brighton team was announced. Was expecting them to make some changes like all teams but that was virtual youth team out there.
Still had to be beaten and aside from bit of a struggle after they scored was pretty comfortable. Hourihane must be really pushing for a start on Saturday now.
-
Potential next opponents?
ManUre are. Just beaten Rochdale.

14982
Isn't that the year Columbus discovered sumfin?
-
Home to Wolves.
-
We’ve drawn to play Wolves at Villa Park.
-
Do season tickets holders get a free ticket for this one?
-
Think is with Hourihane, is he played tonight in the position that either McGinn or Grealish will occupy to Saturday - so for him to come in on Saturday it would require a rethink from Smith, which I just can’t see happening.
-
Great result. Nice boost ahead of Saturday. Good tie next round too.
-

If Smith was going to change formation it would have been tonight. Result aside, thats really worrying.
-
Why?
-

On current form, aye.
Difficult to bench him after that performance.

That's an interesting take on a 3-1 win.
-
A 3-1 away win.
-
I want Conor to play because I like his song.
-
I want Conor to play because I like his song.
Is that the one about his cock?
-
Is "Why didn't Smith change the formation?" the new "Why didn't Barry take the penalty?"
-
Targett and Jots were pretty good. Trez and Hause not so much. McGinn then Jack stand outs obviously.

Stumbled across this, thought some may find it interesting

No I’m not on about Konsa.
-
Jota always looks good in these games. Possible flat track bully?

Hourihane needs to Start on Saturday!
Bring on the Wolves
-
5/2 was the price for Villa tonight before the teams were announced.
Gutted.

If we were to go to two defensive midfielders, then I would like to McGinn potentially playing in front of them and given somewhat of a free role with Grealish pushed further up. I think that role would probably suit Hourihane as well, but a I only really see him as an impact sub at the moment.

That's made me chuckle.

From the brief highlights, Keinan looked full of intent. I'd like to see him up front with Wesley at some point as I think he'd create alot of goals for Wes. But what do I know.
Good win tonight.

I couldn't make it past the implicit claim that the Charity Shield was more significant than the League. Daft sausages.
-
However much you might care or not care about this competition I think a win tonight was very important to boost our confidence, especially as the win came against another Premier League club.
Do we get a bye if Wolves go bust before the next round?

Just heading out ofBrighton now. Quite literally men against boys. We totally dominated midfield in a way I can’t quite remember seeing in 35 yrs of watching Villa. Thought Luiz, Hourihane, McGinn (fist half) and Jack (2nd) were in complete control - which you’d hope they’d be.
Konsa was good, Hause pretty good I thought although didn’t have a good view of their goal.
Davis was the worry - against a youth team he got loads of ball to feet, and was kind of in the game, but just didn’t have much end product. Also Trez slightly flattered to deceive.

Nice to go to an evening match and be home by 1015. Shame we couldn’t draw Crawley next.

And from me
-
Targett and Jots were pretty good. Trez and Hause not so much. McGinn then Jack stand outs obviously.
Targett was pants I thought in the first half. Redeemed himself in the second half, albeit more for his getting down the line rather than defending. Trez was OK, but end product lacking. Elmo was my MoM.
-
Why?
4 points from 6 league games using that formation.
-
Davis looked sharp on that clip.
-
I would have been disappointed if we could not beat a side containing half their youth team
Onwards and upwards, looking forward to see how we go against a tough Burnley team.
-
Listened to the WM commentary for the first time in god knows how long and saw the goals on SKy as they went in. It all sounded easy enough apart from the brief scare for their goal.
-
Well done Villa boys! Some of our great managers (Saunders, Atkinson, Little) never minded a cup run in this competition. Looking forward to seeing how far Deano can go. UTV!

I found it interesting. I only like hearing that Champions of whatever song when it’s sung to so-called ‘bigger’ clubs. Not very classy to the likes of Brighton.
-
Davis looked sharp on that clip.
Did brilliantly for Hourihanes goal, that was Shane Duffy he turned too not some inexperienced kid. I'd like to see Davis being given more of a chance in the league, can bring our midfielders into the play.
Is Targett sufficiently up to speed yet to take Taylor's spot?

It is funny the things you remember that are associated with Villa games. Our 1980 1-0 defeat to Brighton mentioned in that article was on the day I was first told I had to wear glasses as a kid. I remember being far from chuffed all round.

We played them at VP a couple of months before, in October, beat them 4-1 and went top of the table for the first time in years
-
Extended highlights - plenty of chances. Davies looked wasteful
-
Davis looked far more lively and useful than Wesley. Also Targett probably had more attempts on goal in that game than Taylor has had in his entire career.
-
My take for what it’s worth https://villa398.blogspot.com/
They don’t serve large enough portions of humble pie up here!
-
Targett was pants I thought in the first half. Redeemed himself in the second half, albeit more for his getting down the line rather than defending.
From the highlights he did swing in a lovely ball into the box but your comments about his defending are a concern.

He got done once in the first half but was generally ok and a good attacking thread. It's difficult to go overboard due to the strength of the oppo.
-
From the extended highlights we really should have scored more goals and we looked really wasteful.
Really cannot make up my mind about Trez - gets into decent positions but then either piss weak attempt at goal or a poor cross - maybe a goal will settle him down but at present I cannot see justification for being a starter.
Jota is a must against the static 442 from Burnley
-
I'd be tempted to put Davis on against Burnley if we're chasing the game - he causes players to come out of position and passes well. Deserved a goal - they will come.
-
Good win for the boy's great day out by the seaside this could be our year still knackered from yesterday's exertions but in the words of a certain someone we go again Saturday bring on Burnley.

Wasn't at the game, but David did outmuscle their full band and complete the run and pass into the box that led to our second goal.

Pretty much how I saw it.....bit bemused about the Hourihane love-in....as much as I like him, he did as much as I'd expect against poor opposition. SJM was outstanding, ran the show, but again, as you'd expect.....
-
I went last night it was quite frankly all a bit meh as Brighton quite frankly couldn’t wait to get it out of the way. We did what we needed to, job done and onto Wolves.
-

I thought Davis did well. I remember thinking mid-game that we don’t really seem to provide him with many clear-cut opportunities, similar to how we are with Wesley, and so both suffer. They both spend a lot of time coming deep or to the wings to pick up the ball and get involved in play rather than having it delivered into them. They then get criticised for not being in the box when they’re our only striker.
