I have a grandson who lives in the Cotswolds and is a keen Villa supporter. We correspond via email and I get him a ticket if he can arrange to get up in this neck of the woods - he’s coming for the Burnley game. In his last email he gave me his analysis of the season thus far, and I thought that it deserved a wider audience, so here it is:
Grandad
I agree. We are struggling to score goals this season as it seems that Wesley has been unable to recreate what he did against Everton. It's too early to be saying this, but I think we are short a striker and a winger. We need another striker to support Wesley and relieve the pressure on him, as I do not think Davis or Kodjia (our current striking backups) can be trusted to score goals in the premier league. Another winger would be good because I haven't been massively impressed by our current wingers, other than Jota who played very well against Everton (and even him, for me, lacks the legs to track back as he will need to do as a lower-table premier league side).
That said, I have been impressed by our defence and our midfield. In the centre-back positions, we have Mings and Engels, who have formed a good partnership at the back, so that when I am watching us play I am comfortable that they won't slip up and allow us to concede poor goals (and this hasn't been the case for a while). Our midfield is a true asset, and many clubs above us will envy it, as they create so many chances. The build up play between Grealish and Jota looked good on Monday but unfortunately we were unable to capitalise on those chances.
On the whole though, we haven't been playing poorly, as by expected points we are 14th with 5.26 and are above Arsenal. By average player performances we are 9th. However, these are both purely statistical and care needs to be taken to avoid these performances being affecting by diminishing player confidence, and players need to take responsibility to finish off the chances so that we score the goals that we 'should' score.

I don’t recall giving any information regarding my grandson’s age. He’s 22 and at 6ft 2, rather tall to be described as “a tot”. I’ll pass on your rating of his intelligence as “precocious”. He’s just finished at Cambridge University where he got a first in maths and also a Masters in the same subject.
Wrong on all counts then.

My son could say nan but not grandad. He used to say "nan and vava". I have no idea how he turned 'grandad' into 'vava' He has learnt to say grandad now. I would be a bit worried if he hadn't as he is eighteen now.

That's what we used to call my granddad, a Villa fan lucky enough to see us win just about everything, although he was born a couple of years too late for the Double.
