Still no Freddie which I find very surprising given his excellent pre season and no Marvellous. It's possible early on Dean is going with Elmo/Trezeguet and Taylor/AEG chemistry before slowly integrating the new players

Who would you drop for them, though?

With Luiz an out and out DM would’ve like at least one more adventurous full back.

Fitness must be an issue with Marvellous but then he did go on strike....

Taylor, with Targett taking his place and Guilbert replacing Targett, and Lansbury.

I'm surprised Marvelous doesn't make the bench ahead of Lansbury.

I don't have a problem with that team actually.  Elmo and Taylor put in decent shifts at Spurs and don't deserve dropping.  It also keeps the same back four together.

Not really a case of dropping but given Elmo played all summer and Freddie played so well in the summer that would be an obvious one you'd have thought. And on the bench Marvellous for Lansbury. But I do know that Dean likes Lansbury a lot. In any case, both Elmo and Taylor actually did ok last week.

Good to see Dougie Lou make his full debut. That's at least the midfield we all wanted.

So not even benched are the two goalies out in the cold, Chester and House (both injured), Guilbert, Nakamba and Kodjia (injured). I feel there's another new signing I've missed

Don't understand those full back selections particularly Taylor. Reeks of conservatism on a day where we need to keep the ball a lot better. Hourihane unlucky to be dropped imo.

Only thing I can think is with Luiz starting, which I didn’t expect, meaning SJM/JG changing position smith wants to avoid making too many changes at once.

Think he'll manage an hour and then start flagging, hopefully Dean is sharper with his subs than he was last week. Really surprised Marvellous isn't involved, he was involved in pre season for Lepzig game.

My guess with Marvellous is that he didn’t train much with Brugge before he joined us. Remember all those strike stories that came out because he felt Brugge lied to him or something. So he simply may not be as fit as the club needs at the moment.

That and I do think early on it’s a chemistry thing. Taylor/AEG and Elmo/Trez have all played together so maybe this early in the season it’s the best option. I am sure in time it will be Guilbert and Targett.

I am sure Dean Smith knows what he's doing by integrating the players into the team.  Ideally, I'd like Targett in for Taylor but he's not, so we crack on.

He did play in AFCON and Luiz was training on a beach for two weeks so can't think his core fitness is that much better.

Still hourihane wasn't too bad last week at DM so he can be o.k coming on to see last half hour if we're winning.

Paul Merson has just said on Soccer Saturday that he fears for us this season as he can't see us scoring enough goals. Now Alan McInally is picking faults in last weeks game and saying we will concede too many goals.

Not sure we will ever see a Conor, Jack, John midfield again as I suspect they are now interchangeable and DM is between Luiz and Marv

Too right. Smith's done that the whole time he's been here. If you've done enough to keep the shirt, you keep it. There can't be many things more demoralising for a player than losing out to a manager's pet.

Think we'll see it today actually, can't see Luiz lasting 90 minutes. I agree long term Hourihane will cover McGinn's position more.

Just looking at the fixtures (already written off today now). Everton on Friday is going to be very tough to win as will be West Ham and Arsenal after the break.

Really only Palace looks winnable and that's away and Zaha might be in a better mood by then.

Stating the obvious but in this league you don't want to be going into October still searching for a win.

The midfield is all wrong. There's a big fucking gap there.

It should be more balanced than last week with an actual DM in.

I guess at any level of football conceding after the first minute is just a massive mental setback. Didn't help we then conceded another ten minutes later so now the crowd is quiet and starting to get negative again.

Think from watching last week aswell I'm not convinced we really have the fitness yet to play a competitive 90 minutes in this league either.

This happened when we made all those signings under Sherwood aswell.

Frustrating. This should've been a fantastic day but all gone flat very quickly.

Fulham aside - how have we managed to spend £140m on seemingly decent players and still ended up looking like a leaky fucking bag? Appalling football being played out there.

Half of them aren't fit or playing. Dosen't help the most reliable and experienced of the signings made a very rash decision after a minute.

Good point. If the other half were fit and playing, we could be 4-0 down already.

We were linked with Wilson weren't we? Wasn't sure whether he could step up to premier league yet but he can play on wing or upfront so did seem a very obvious player to complete the squad.

Billing showed some promise at Huddersfield so again would've seemed a realistic target.

Ref is Martin Atkinson so probably most experienced ref at this level now with Mike Dean.

As I've said before surely the VAR guy is watching this and telling him that Billing foul was worthy of another yellow?

Anyway feels a bit like the Swansea cup game last season. Think they scored a couple early on and just when things were looking better they picked another off on the break and it really was over at 3-0.

Can see same happening here. Interested to see what half time changes we make.

Jack was anonymous.

Luiz grew into the game and looks increasingly classy.

Wesley also getting better but doesn’t look like any kind of goal threat and appearing increasingly insane to be relying on him up front.

Worst set pieces I’ve seen for a long time - get Conor on?

I don’t think they’re better than us but hard to tell because we gave them a 2 goal head start.

We should know better than to expect any help from the crooked refs of the PL this season. If they're not Homers, then they favour established teams. See treatment of Cardiff last season for example. Doubts about Tammy at this level but I'd be much more confident with him leading the line.

It's forgotton but when we signed Benteke we still had likes of Bent and Gabby. At the time they were proven premier league players so Benteke could develop without having pressure of leading the line.

Belgain league to premier league is massive step up. All seems a bit odd to me given what we spent and stockpiling CBs.

Wesley tripped by keeper but think he had a finger on the ball and they got to it at pretty much the same time.

Yeah seems to be struggling with the step up a fair bit. Surprised as he played games for Ajax in CL so it shouldn't be massively above his skillset.

We all saw how frustrating he was last year.

Can't understand why no changes made. You let games drift in the premier league and you'll lose most of them.

Shots on target- 6-3
Corners              8-2
Possession  68-32%

Brutal truth is at championship level we'd probably be 3-1 up now.

Part of me wants to believe it’s the evolution of things. And it will come. The other part of me is massively concerned that we are just not clinical enough and we won’t be with the current set up and lack of striking options.

Next week I would much rather we start Guilbert/Jota down the right and Trez on the left. AEG hasn’t done it and I’d get Targett in toon

Pretty sure we'll see 3-4 changes for that. Really need to get the new signings up to speed, we've spent more than enough on them.

Free kick about 25 yards out, final action of the game.

I'm afraid losing at home to Bournemouth is pretty much a disaster.

Very disappointing. We need to be much much sharper than this if we’re going to stay up.

Very poor. Cannot gift teams 2 goals at this level.

Mcginn and Luiz(after his error) very good. The rest mediocre

What a poor result, theses are the teams we need to beat.  we don't expect anything from Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea, etc but we must get points from those in our part of the league.

I'm afraid losing at home to Bournemouth is pretty much a disaster.

Well West Ham lost to them at this stage last season and indeed lost first four.  Finished 10th.

I don't think it's a bad thing to get a reality check early on. Some of the hype and finishing predictions across social media on the back of largely untried signings was pretty crazy, almost like we've learnt nothing from 2015.

Obviously we need some points on the board soon, Eveton not going to be easy team to play at all as they have lots of quality in final third.

On this showing, Bournemouth will not be in our part of the league. They'll be comfortably mid-table. We'll be struggling to survive.

I don’t agree with that. The massive difference today is that we were not clinical. Look at the stats. Outside of a couple of terrible errors we were the better team. If you didn’t know the score and just saw the other stats you’d be convinced we won.

At least this is a wake up call for the insane people that were predicting a top ten finish.

17th will be a miracle
