Title: Crewe Alexandra v Aston Villa pre-match thread
Post by: ADVILLAFAN on August 13, 2019, 07:17:37 PM
Gresty Road, 27/08/2019
7.45pm KO

The draw for the 2nd round of the League Cup is tonight, after the Salford v Leeds game.

Personally hoping for a home draw against a team I haven't seen before.

I get the point of a split draw but something like Leicester to Carlisle (or the other way round) would still a fucking shit journey for fans mid-week and I doubt the Norwich or Ipswich teams would be happy with a trip to Plymouth or Yeovil. I don't have any better ideas though.

That Crewe game was a good day out (eventually). I think it was an early kick off and Kenny Swain played for them as their player coach. Alan McInally and David Platt scored but I can't remember who got our other goal. The story I heard was that SGT walked into the dressing room and told them "You got us into this mess, you lot get us out of this mess" and then promptly walked straight back out again and left them to it.

Crewe was in an early round and then a replay. I remember it was Chester in the semi and going to Sealand Road as a yoingster and only seeing half of the pitch with the large crowd and then scraping through in the second leg.

Leeds vs Stoke? Meh.

I'd agree with Forest v Derby, they really don't like each other.

Other ties of the round are Crewe v Villa, Lincoln v Everton and Newport v West Ham. You want the small clubs at home to the big clubs. And West Ham.

Struggling to think of a match I would give less of a toss about than Newcastle Reserves vs Leicester Reserves in front of a one-third full stadium.

Suspect we will just about miss out on television coverage because we have been televised in the first couple of rounds for the last four years. They'll go with Lincoln v Everton and the East Midlands Derby. Maybe West Ham, too, if they can squeeze in three live games.

Yes for Crewe the away end is touchline shed and then for overspill away support gets behind the goal aswell. Would imagine a few Villa will be in the gigantic main stand they have, think it's 6k capacity for a ground that just about holds 10k.

Wigan’s old ground had one of those, I remember going with my old man a couple of times in the late 80’s early 90’s to watch Fulham. Easily the worst ground I’ve ever been to.

I’m getting a bit confused already with all these Cup games...is the League Cup now the Carabao Cup or is that the EFL Cup where we play the kids/reserves? Since when has there been a north/south draw in the League Cup...or have I actually confused that with one or both of the EFL or Carabao Cups? Have Baggies just lost 2-1 to Millwall in front of barely 11,000 at home in the League Cup, Carabao Cup or EFL Cup? Are we supposed to care about this one and does winning it get you into the Europa League Cup thing? 🤔

I don't know what's happened to me since the Championship.  I've suddenly become obsessed with visiting grounds that I've never been to before.

I missed the Crewe league cup game (I think it was before Christmas so it would have been 74).  My mates from school went but I wasn't allowed the time off school.  I did Chester in the semi-final that season but also missed the FA cup game at Crewe when we overturned a 0-2 in the second half under GT.

I'l definitely be going to this one, ticket permitting.  Will also be agreat opportunity to see a few of our fringe players starting.

It's a good thing!  I sometimes go through each of the league divisions and check off which ones I have been to so far.

Stopped / Changed at Crewe so many times over the years going to away matches up north, I've always wanted to see us play there.

Carabao/League Cup/EFL Cup is the same thing. The winners qualify for the Europa League.

The under 23s and lower leagues is the EFL Trophy

EFL Trophy is basically the Leyland Daf Cup. Except rather than leave it for what it was, a chance for the lesser lights such as Carlisle, Grimsby, Mansfield, Small Heath and Wolves, to have a day in the sun, they've decided to add Premier League under-21 teams to ruin it.

When they won it in 1991 there was a BRMB phone in with BFR when he became Villa manager. A Villa fan rang in and asked Ron "Are you going to win us a cup like Blues have just won"?  Quick as a flash BFR replied "I hope I don't win you the Leyland Daf Cup"!

I think it must be after one of those victories, such a proud and defining moment in the history of Birmingham City, that Paul Tait decided to bask in the glory of 'his moment' the pinnacle of his career by unveiling a 'shit on the Villa' tee shirt. Looking at 1600 allocation from a capacity of 10,100 which is 15% - do they not have to offer 25% for cup games? Even so 2500 tickets would go in an instant so I hope they do televise it.

I went there in 1989 and nearly died as a bought of food poisoning meant I passed out whilst driving on the M6 and cut across 2 lanes until stopping up a bank.

I went there in early 80's with a some friends to watch them vs Port Vale in a local derby and that was a bit tasty - so wonder if they are like Walsall and just let us buy tickets for their stands?

Just hop on the train, 2 minute walk to their ground from the station.

Yeah totally recommend the train. When I was at Liverpool Uni we popped down to see Crewe v Tranmere just to tick off a ground. It's really close to the station.

Will probably have 2 stands this time round

Yes for Crewe the away end is touchline shed and then for overspill away support gets behind the goal aswell. Would imagine a few Villa will be in the gigantic main stand they have, think it's 6k capacity for a ground that just about holds 10k.

was there in 1989, such a memorable match.  but does memory serve me right that the away end was an unterraced earth bank, at least in part?

I might be wrong but my memories of Crewe in 1989 was that it was a normal stepped terrace.

It was. Directly in front of us was the earth bank where I think the trains pass behind. I can remember their main stand on the right but what was on the left? Certainly one of the smallest grounds I've been to watching the Villa.

Of all the remarkable things I have learned from H&V over the years, right up there is the fact that Crewe has a University.

When I read it I assumed the University of Stafford had one of its campus's there.
Apparently not but a google search tells me manchester metropolitan has a campus in Crewe.
Sadly not anymore. Manchester Metropolitan closed the Crewe campus down last month and it will now be used as some kind of private medical training facility from what I have read.

We played them in the League cup in 1974. The 'Villa Terrace' was a cinder bank and the large crowd kicked up a dust storm resulting in black snot for days afterwards. Incidentally that end's fencing was railway sleepers stood on end -great recycling for a railway town.

Newport v West Ham and Lincoln v Everton are the live games. Can't argue too much with those choices.

I assume that means we stay on the Tuesday night which is good for us as it gives us the advantage of an extra day's rest. We play Everton the previous Friday. Not that I expect too many of our players to start both.

I’m confident we won’t do two things. Win the league or go down. So a cup run would be just wonderful. We need to use the squad so 4 or 5 outfield changes should be the most we gamble with chemistry. Crewe are off to a good start but I’ll still go for 3-1 to us

Steer
Guilbert
Targett
Engels
Konsa
Lansbury
Hourihane
McGinn
Jota
Trezeguet
Wesley

Subs: AEG, Luiz, Davis, Marvelous, Hause (if fit enough), Elmo, Heaton

Rest Jack and Mings

I don't believe we need to be resting too many at this point. I'd rest Mings just to be wary of that twinge he had. Steer deserves some game time.
Up top, Wesley plays for me. Let him throw his weight around about, hopefully bag a few more goals and get some momentum to take back to the league. Give him 70, give Davis or Kodjia 20 to get some game time too. Hourihane could come back in. Possibly a good time to debut Targett as well.
I'd be looking to play a strong side though.

We play Palace at the weekend and then don't play for 16 days so i'd be going with a strong lineup. Steer in and Mings rested, and then pretty much our strongest other 11, dependent on no one having any minor niggles.

Guess we could start almost full strength then hopefully give a couple of fringe players off the bench in the second half as we would hope to be in a position of comfort by then.

I want Wes to play. Momentum is key for him and it would give him such a boost to carry on where he left off and bag a couple against Crewe. He's a young kid, he can get rest after he scores a few more vs Palace.

It’s hard to keep a squad happy but we still have a lot of new players that need game time as a priority rather than our players from last season, so for that reason I’d have them all playing with a few exceptions...

                   Steer
Guilbert. Konsa. Hause. Targett
                    Luiz
      Hourihane.     Marvelous
   Jota.          Wes.   Trezeguet

Davis, Kodjia, Lansbury, Elmo, AEG and Chester should be options from the bench depending on how the game is going. We can’t risk Jack, Mings, Engels and SJM so they should be no where near this squad.

I’m really interested to see who Smith picks for this match.  For once, we have the strength in depth to change every player and still field a capable team, but obviously doing so can be disruptive as they don’t play together like that week in week out.

Will be interesting to see who he carries over and who he drops in from the squad, and how they react and take their chance.

I know I keep saying it, but I really, really want us to have a good crack at the cups from now on.  The fans enjoy it, players always want to win stuff, and it can only add to the attempt to create a winning culture.

I haven't had time to post while in the UK so let me just go back to the Everton game: fucking ace! The noise from the fans was deafening (and we were in the middle of the Trinity), I loved Guilbert, what a win, got a pic with Sir Brian and Li'l Lee, Tyrobe sauntered past us after the game but I was too alcoholically-challengedto react quickly enough to get up and ask him for a pic.

I should think Marvelous and Targett will need a runout.  Hourihane tried out in a more forward position.

Keep Wesley in, to see if he can get a few more goals, and bring Davis on after an hour or so if all is going well.

I'd go:

Steer
Guilbert - Engels - Konsa - Targett
Hourihane - Marvelous - Lansbury
Jota - El Ghazi
Wesley

Davis would 100% be starting this for me, he needs gametime to show he can be the backup for Wesley.

I'd also bring in Konsa, Hause, Marvelous and Targett because they also need the gametime. I'd probably get Marv to play the McGinn role and keep Douglas in though. I'd have a few kids on the bench as well, gotta give them chances.
