That's not at all the side I thought we would put out. Why Taylor? Where's Freddie?
-
Interesting selection.
-
May I be the first to say........ Neil Taylor ?!? WTF
-
Anybody else having issues logging into Now TV?
-
Trezeguet over Jota?
-
Interesting that Doug is on the bench but no Marv
-
Don't think many would have predicted that line-up. Guilbert must be illl or injured
-
Taylor?
-
May I be the first to say........ Neil Taylor ?!? WTF
I feel my confidence level just took a punch to the bollocks
-
The full backs are a surprise.
-
Well the play-off team are certainly being rewarded. Just hope we don't play like a Serie B side.
-

-
That’s a bit of a what the fuck team?
No Freddy, Taylor starting, no sign of Marvelous?
-
Taylor?? Elmohamady??
Wtf??
Guilbert and Jota the 2 most impressive in pre season are left out.
TAYLOR???
Very alarming!
-
Looking at those full backs we are dead. No Fred or Marvelous in the squad either. Fuck.
-
No Hause either
-
One or two surprises, bench included, but what do we know? UTV
-
(https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EBnmdDnXoAA-vGZ?format=jpg&name=large)
-
That has really surprised me and I imagine a few others
And if I'm honest a little disappointing
-
Hey, we actually have a dangerous looking bench. Wesley to score our first, Grealish with the second goal, Jota to come off the bench and finish them off. Get the bookies, that's as good as cash.
-
I'm now officially bricking it.
-
Erm......right....ok then.
-
On the positive side, at least we are going evolution and not revolution.
-
Now that really is strange after the last pre season line up
-
Surprised at some of the team selections but fuck it, come on you lions.
-
Both full backs has suprised me. Thought Hourihane would start after last week. Come on lads, do us proud. UTV.
-
What the actual fuck?! We’re going to be thrashed within an inch of our lives.
-
I don't get it regarding Targett. He played solidly enough all pre season. Nothing at all to suggest Taylor was the better player. And here we are he can't get into the line up opening day. Freddie must have taken a knock which is hugely disappointing. We are starting our PL campaign with two aging and only borderline Championship full backs. Fuck me.
-
I hope that this isn't a knee-jerk 'better play it safe' reaction to the performances of 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' and Citeh
-
Taylor!
-
As Dean Smith said in his recent interview, he is paid to pick a team he thinks will win the game. He deserves to pick it too.
Edit. If I sound a bit like clampy it's because I've not started drinking yet.
-
The fullback selection is a shock and Jota not starting is a surprise.
-
Guilbert cannot be fit to not even be on the bench. Taylor is fucking shit though. Do not understand that one bit
-
Let’s keep positive eh boys?
Deano has earned the right for us to have some trust in his choices and game plan.
-
We should look ok up front with our wingers but that midfield is very weak. Taylor is so shit, I hope this is his last game. I don't mind Elmo for Guilbert to be honest as I trust him far more than I trust the other side of the defence. Some weird decisions picking that side.
-
Well the play-off team are certainly being rewarded. Just hope we don't play like a Serie B side.
This was also my thought as soon as I saw Elmo and Taylor in there. I hope that is not what Dean is doing but....
-
That team sheet has deflated me completely tbh.
TAYLOR should be an emergency only player surely to god. When we get Targett on the bench and Hause not in the squad.......yet TAYLOR is starting i mean WTF?!?!?
-
Taylor?? Elmohamady??
Wtf??
Guilbert and Jota the 2 most impressive in pre season are left out.
TAYLOR???
Very alarming!
Why shouldn't Elmo start? He had a really good African Nations Cup.
-
Massively underwhelmed. I can only assume he was forced into the majority of these changes from last week.
-
Spurs away maybe a bit much for Fredie needs to be eased in, Spurs away isn’t that, so gone for experience. Taylor though dear me, and all the midfielders, Lansbury on the bench?? Jota will get his chance and it’s up to him
-
(https://media3.giphy.com/media/26vIes4DO3kzrEvZK/giphy.gif)
-
Hourihane protecting our back 4 is my biggest worry
-
Do we predict Taylor being subbed after 15?
-
Do we predict Taylor being subbed after 15?
I'll take the under
-
Anybody else having issues logging into Now TV?
Working fine for me.
-
Both fullbacks are more defensive options...probably makes sense
-
Can only assume
Freddie Ill or injured
Marvellous same
He feels they are weak out wide so going for pace with Ghazi and Trez rather than Jota.
Cannot fathom Taylor as Targett has premiership experience and has held the position for the majority of pre season since joining
My optimism has just took a knock
-
Full back selections are, um , courageous.
-
Guilbert is disappointing but I assume it's a fitness thing so sod all can be done about that, Trez over Jota is hardly the end of the world and was a tossup anyway for me over who starts, Taylor in is a bit meh but you'd think we were fielding a side with Bacuna, Richardson et al judging by on here :P
-
The only, ONLY thing i can think of is that Taylor has a better understanding at the moment with AEG and is a better supporting option on that side. And we might try and attack a bit down that side. But when they have the ball I will be fucking shitting it. If I am Spurs I would be focusing getting it out wide as often as possible. Fuck we saw Championship sides do it effectively, let alone the 2019 CL losing finalists.
-
Both fullbacks are more defensive options...probably makes sense
I'd hate to see our other options at right back if Elmo is the defensively minded one.
-
Let’s keep positive eh boys?
Deano has earned the right for us to have some trust in his choices and game plan.
Plus as fans we are going to have to keep our nerve and roll with a few punches this season so some people pushing the panic button before we kick off our first game does not bode well for when we lose a couple on the bounce. As Delia would say "Come on, lets be having yer". Faint heart never won anything.
-
Looks like a team set up to counter to me. He's picked the two more defensive minded full backs along with the quicker wide players rather than the guile of Jota. It's a surprise but let's see how it goes.
-
Dean is the man , he knows what he’s doing
Keep the faith
-
Cannot fathom Taylor as Targett has premiership experience and has held the position for the majority of pre season since joining
When it comes to top flight experience Taylor has about 3 times as much.
-
I have no probs with Elmo playing....in all honesty does he really deserve to be be dropped? I don’t think so.
But Taylor ..WTF.?
-
Both fullbacks are more defensive options...probably makes sense
Think both fullbacks are championship standard at best. Guilbert obviously injured, but to have Taylor in over Targett is unfathomable.
Think they will get ripped to pieces by Tottenhams wide players. If Pochettino has sense they will target those areas.
-
I had hoped never to see Neil Taylor play for us again.
-
The only, ONLY thing i can think of is that Taylor has a better understanding at the moment with AEG and is a better supporting option on that side. And we might try and attack a bit down that side. But when they have the ball I will be fucking shitting it. If I am Spurs I would be focusing getting it out wide as often as possible. Fuck we saw Championship sides do it effectively, let alone the 2019 CL losing finalists.
From my viewpoint at the playoff final, Taylor had little or no understanding with AEG. Most of which was down to Taylor's extremely limited technical ability. Cannot fathom that selection at all, poor decision from Smith.
-
Still excited but a little less so seeing that team.
-
We look far too open.
-
I guess we are still integrating players but hope that Targett plays much more often that Taylor this season. Bit of a solid looking feel about the selection rather than gung ho, with Guilbert and Targett playing, perhaps Dean thinks they will pick us off. The centre of the park is a concern with Hourihane in there at this level. Oh well, let's try to enjoy it, we knew it was going to be tough and this game does not define our season!
-
We look far too open.
Agreed, I want Hutton and Heskey as defensive wingers!
-
I have no probs with Elmo playing....in all honesty does he really deserve to be be dropped? I don’t think so.
But Taylor ..WTF.?
And will help Trez too you would imagine, I'm staying up beat for now.
-
I think it was a mistake by me to watch the Liverpool and Man City games :(
-
Anybody else having issues logging into Now TV?
Yes I did. Had to reset my password even though it was the same one I've always used.
-
Taylor????
spend 14 million on a LB and play ' oh fuck Im too far up the pitch , Im scared ' Taylor and I thought Guilbert looked excellent in pre season .
Yes Elmo is experience , doesnt mean you are a prem quality ,maybe hes playing him to hold Trezs hand as I was expecting Jota to start.
Anyway we are back and it feels good...
-
Ha ha Fulham eh?! I’ll flummox them by playing Neil Taylor instead!
-
Its a totally bizarre decision to play Taylor, a player most fans have wanted to see the back of from the minute he arrived.
He looked exposed in the Championship never mind against one of the big 6 and Champions League finallists.
When we have paid £20million this summer on 2 players who are far superior at left back in Targett and Hause.
Needless risk on the opening day from Smith.
-
Even Brighton and Burnley have chalked up three goal wins.
Welcome to the Premier League.
-
Eriksen not starting for them is a bonus, mind.
-
Keeping some faith in the core and some experience out on the pitch.
Not a big fan of Taylor but in Dean we trust. Guilbert doesn’t even fit on the bench, but looking at the bench I can see why. Good balanced subs bench
-
If we are going to be defensive minded today then Taylor makes no sense. Hopefully it is a measure to usurp Pochettino's planning as surely he expected Targett.
-
Eriksen not starting for them is a bonus, mind.
I thought that, but the others look very powerful midfielders all of a sudden. I guess we have to try to take the positives from this and get minutes under Douglas's belt in the second half if we can, knowing we have two home games up next. Tottenham aren't quite right either at the moment.
-
when their team aint got Ali and Son and Eriksen isnt starting . yes they are a top team but without them they are not exactly Brazil 1970 , so we can give them a go.
-
Let’s keep positive eh boys?
Deano has earned the right for us to have some trust in his choices and game plan.

Have to chuckle to myself ........all the pre-season optimism evaporated following the release of the team line -up ....some will be in melt down if we lose ......we need to get behind Dean and the boys for every game this season - it ain't gonna be easy - 17th will be acceptable first season back
-
Come on Villa. It's a big ask to go against one of the best teams in Europe, lets just give it our best and see how we go. Back where we belong. Come on you Lions!
-
Ffs, Taylor and Elmo. Really? I understand easing people in but fancied Guilbert and Targett to give Spurs more to think about both at the back and going forward than those two can. Looks like we're banking on Spurs playing mostly through the middle, but if they spread the play they'll make mince meat of our full-backs.
-
Eriksen not starting for them is a bonus, mind.
Yes but that's balanced by Alli also not playing.
-
Elmo starting I can understand but I didn’t expect Taylor to even make the bench to be honest.
-
Very attack-minded to go with Trezeguet over Jota.
-
Pochettino just now: "Oh bollocks! He's picked Taylor, what the fuck am I supposed to do now?"
-
Pochettino just now: "Oh bollocks! He's picked Taylor, what the fuck am I supposed to do now?"
Play down our left
-
bench looks good
he obviously fancies Henri this season
-
NRC already comparing us to Fulham FFS.
-
NRC
Nigel Real Cock
-
Why is Tyrone Mings dad dancing? Take it seriously!!
-
Has anybody started a drinking game yet? If so take a swig as Nigel Reo-Coker has just said "Fulham" ;)
-
I fear we're going to get handed our arse with that team selection. I can only think a few of our players and manager have been drugged.
-
The only sharp thing about NRC is his suit.
-
Reo Coker trotting out the fucking boring Fulham phrase.
Just fuck off.
-
I think it's pretty obvious that Smith is trying to get as much consistency in selection from the run in to last season so the only player who could've started but hasn't is Steer, the other 3 new signings are replacing Tuanzebe, Adomah/Green and Abraham.
I think he'll slowly evolve the team over the next month or so to bring in the extra quality. I think both fullbacks will be replaced pretty quickly.
-
Sat watching this in Poole, seems I am behind enemy lines.
-
bench looks good
he obviously fancies Henri this season
He really does, which is just plain odd to me. Only explanation I can think of is he's improved his attitude and stepped up for extra work when perhaps Birkir wouldn't - hence the decision to let go. Entirely speculation on my part but if not I can't how you'd choose between Henri and Bjarnason as the man to provide depth. Flipped a coin maybe
Also where's Nakamba? Did I miss a late injury udpate? On strike maybe?
-
Anybody else having issues logging into Now TV?
Working fine for me.
Thanks for confirming. Classic timing!
-
Full backs are a big worry. Turn up please Villa.
-
The only sharp thing about NRC is his suit.
He read War & Peace, you know.

Yeah, but he didn't understand it.
-
Nigel Reo-Coker. JFC.
-
As surprised as everyone else, but trusting Dean Smith and his coaching team.
Guilbert was great in pre-season though not to be on the bench might point to an injury.
Elmo didn't feature that much in the warm-up games given his involvement for Egypt (which was more than decent). Maybe Elmo gets the nod to help settle and support Trez.
Taylor is a surprise, though the grief he gets from some is over the top.
We signed 12, and six are starting and another four are on the bench. Away at Spurs first up and you could make a case for being defensively conservative particularly with Jack and the front three, so that might explain why Taylor gets the nod. UTV.

Yeah agree with this, keeping faith with the promotion team and will change over the coming weeks. He is giving everyone the opportunity to prove that they deserve the place. In Deano we trust
-

It was The Art of War, a book for knobheads.
-
It's going to take some time for our new lot to gel, Dean is being pragmatic picking a team that are familiar and comfortable with each other. Our marvellous signings will be integrated over the coming weeks, no sweat.
-
I get the continuity thing but Taylor? That was the one position where we stood to improve the most.
-

If Neil Taylor is our best bet when we want to adopt a defensively conservative approach, god help us against the rest of the top 4 is all I can say.
-
Yes I don’t get the Taylor selection at all.
-
Rail seats. Air port scanners. Old Snobs floor.
-
To be fair I'd got Elmo in to start the season as first choice right back until I saw Guilbert play and then changed my mind. I'm not massively surprised though, he does have a lot more experience so not too upset. Thought Hourahane would start as well, the only big surprise was Taylor but again he is more experienced, Targett will get his chance. A little surprised Trez is in but pleased about that.

Marvelous must be match fitness .

Unbelievable, since May, all the “in Deano we trust” has disappeared before we’ve even kicked a ball !?!
We’ve all got opinions, and this site is for posting them but lay off Deano, he’ll have his reasons, either dealt with illness or injuries , or just simply his choice
As he’s just said, 3 of our back 4 were on a very long winning run last year
-
Looking at the Spurs team Eriksen out, new £55 million signing Ndombele starts, trying to keep positive, Wesley to score a last minute winner!
-
Unbelievable, since May, all the “in Deano we trust” has disappeared before we’ve even kicked a ball !?!
There's someone who more or less said in Dean we trust just a few posts above.

More hysteria because people are having their say. This is a discussion forum. Suggesting Targett might have started ahead of Taylor doesn't mean we're all suddenly turning on the manager!
-
Come on you Villa boys!
-
Racist song getting an airing. Fuck off.
-
Assume Guilbert is ill or injured. Can't understand Taylor at all, especially as Targett is on the bench.

No-one is sticking it to Dean, we are sticking it to Taylor! The side is for consistency and away to Spurs, he's gone for fewer changes, more cohesiveness. Just win.

I'm liking the free wifi

As Dean Smith has just pointed out - he was one of three in a back four that conceded very few goals in the last 15 games last season (after leaking loads). He (Smith) is obviously keen on a fair degree of continuity. UTV.

True, but he was the worst of the four.

Haven’t read anyone having a go at Dean. It’s opinions as you say, I won’t agree with everything he does but I agree he knows more than me. I am surprised at Taylor starting, but that’s not having a go at Dean. I did have a Moab about Dean, in the pub after Brentford away, and keep getting reminded of it ha ha

You’ve repeated myself.....agree it’s a site for posting opinions. But there are too many already moaning about Deano’s Choices, that’s what he gets paid for.
We don’t see what happens at BMH all week or the stats they use

Yeah against joke teams, not effing Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela! Oh well, I really hope I'm wrong but my feelings aren't good about this.

Well, a little underwhelmed by the starting 11, but really only the full-backs. I think everyone thought Fred and Targett would start, but I trust Dean to make the right decisions, and I'm sure he's picked them for good reason! UTV!

Anyway, let’s make a good account of ourselves
UTV
-
The Villa fans in good voice.
-
Right, now it's down to them. UTV
-
No Guilbert even on the bench? Interestingly that's seven of the play-off final team playing today - all these pundits saying we've changed the whole team! What do they know?
-
Villa to win 2-1 (Taylor and Elmo)
Every week we follow...allez, allez, allez

Although probably not a good idea if you are watching it in the pub :)

A poor forward ball? No it fucking wasn't you twat.
-
Exceptional McGinn. What a player.

Great run in behind, exactly the sort of thing I've been talking about, even if Wesley gets a flick it's the right run.
-
What the fuck! Incredible! Come on Villa!

Get the fuck in!!!
Now TV is about a minute behind.

Our passing has been pretty poor so far it has to be said.
-
SJM with an unseen run, straight down the M1 and round the North Circular.
Haha
-
Stop ball watching Tyrone. Need to be calmer in possession.
-
I'm so hyped.
-
gooooaaalllllllllllllllllllllllll
-
We won’t last if we keep allowing this much time on the ball. At some point we need to get a hold of it because we are being pushed further and further back.
-
that finish in slo-mo...my word
-
Fuck Spurs. We look dangerous on the break.
-
We can’t sustain this. We need to get some control on the ball.
-
Engels looking good. Far calmer than Mings
-
Engels looks superb
-
I feel so confident in engels
-
Nice freekick
-
Dirty bastards
-
Wes needs to be stronger in these duels.
Otherwise delighted with what we've done so far, look good on counter attack.
-
FFS Wes! Stay on your feet.
-
Fuck right off, ref.
-
Come on Wed, stronger please.
-
Good to see the refs are just as shit as in the Championship.
-
Engels has been excellent so far.
Ref is giving us fuck all.
-
Fuck off ref.
-
Fucking ref.
-
Why is time not moving forwards?
-
Our son has been quite good
-
Hourihane limitations being exposed a bit here, joined late, where is Marvellous?
-
Why is time not moving forwards?
It feels like 70 minutes have been played.
-
Wesley needs to stop moaning and get on with it. Not impressed so far
-
Hourihane limitations being exposed a bit here, joined late, where is Marvellous?
I'm here
-
Engels has been excellent so far.
Ref is giving us fuck all.
Something about him tells me we've signed the new Mellberg. Liked what I saw in pre season.
-
Poor cross
-
Liking the look of Trez. Makes some intelligent runs.
-
Trezeget looks good so far.
-
Poor freekick from Conor, one man wall and he hits the wall.
-
BBC comments page is funny. Villa could be giant killers on opening day says Tony in Wales. Giant killers? Tiny little Villa vs massive Spurs. Ah you can't beat modern day football perceptions.
-
The refereeing at this level is just as bad as in Division 2
-
Kit looks smart.
-
Another chance wasted
-
Shit from Jack. Should have made pass earlier
-
Fullbacks playing so narrow...tons of space for their wingers
-
That needs to be better. Great run from Jack
-
BBC comments page is funny. Villa could be giant killers on opening day says Tony in Wales. Giant killers? Tiny little Villa vs massive Spurs. Ah you can't beat modern day football perceptions.
Unreal isn't it.
-
Shit from Jack. Should have made pass earlier
Thought he did well, Trez at fault there.
-
Engels really is very good
-
Not getting much off the ref, here.
-
Shit from Jack. Should have made pass earlier
Nonsense.
-
Wesley is frustrating.
-
This ref is awful.
-
How was that not a foul by Rose?
-
Shit from Jack. Should have made pass earlier
Thought he did well, Trez at fault there.
Bit of both. Trezeguet has to use his left but Jack’s pass could have been a bit better. But it was mostly Trezeguet not being confident enough with his left
-
Shit from Jack. Should have made pass earlier
Nonsense.
How? He took more touches than necessary after doing the hard work.
-
Trez is fucking class
-
Another bad decision from the ref.
-
Dirty bastards. Shit ref
-
How was that not a foul by Rose?
Wes suffering from going down too easy in earlier challenges
-
Good tackle Neil
-
We are starting to settle and play some nice stuff now.
-
Wes is playing like I would.
Note: I am really, really shit at football.
-
Tres looking very positive. Wes needs to stay on his feet. Engels best new signing for me so far
-
Big Wes will score 8)
-
Kodjia might get some action later then perhaps....
-
Engels is reminding me a bit of Mertesacker.
-
Taylor doing well so far
-
Taylor doing well so far
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh
You’re right
-
I think we can see this out until half time. Really nervy though, the Championship wasn't this nervy for me.
-
Engels is reminding me a bit of Mertesacker.
So far he's reading the game brilliantly and making it look a lot easier than is fair against this attack.
-
I want to hear loads of boos at HT
-
Really impressed with Hourihane so far. Our front three hurling themselves to the ground is a bit embarrassing.
-
Wes not impressing so far. He's up front on his own but looks very sulky.
-
AEG isn’t showing the confidence to take on the full back. He needs to keep the ball longer and have a go.
-
IF this stays the same think Jota would be decent sub to bring on, you'd trust the ball to stick a little better with him somewhere in that front three.
-
Finally another Spurs chance
-
Keeper had it
-
Kane starting to get into things now, don't really want to be giving him too many free headers in the box.
-
This feels like the play off final all over again!
-
Kane misses and was offside anyway
-
Half time.
-
This feels like the play off final all over again!
Very true, Villa 1 up at HT in London.
-
1/76th of the job done
-
More of the same second half please Villa.
-
We'll need another one. We've looked decent in phases.
-
And......breathe
-
1/76th of the job done
What about the cups?
-
Need to keep pressing the ball. There’s been sloppiness towards the end of the half. Need to keep the pressure on.
SJM, Trez, Engels have been excellent.
-
Come on Villa!!
-
Well this is somewhat unexpected.
Whisper it, but we don't look at all out of place.
And we have a really strong bench, too.
-
Wes was wank, Trez and AEG got into good positions but wasted them, we deserve the lead and look like we have more goals in us.
-
A lot of learning went on in that half, I reckon. I hope Wesley did some.
-
Wes not impressing so far. He's up front on his own but looks very sulky.
I think Sanchez went through the back of him early on but he didn't get the decision and he's been a bit annoyed about it and has been trying to get some decisions since.
-
Impressed with the first half, Engels looks pretty assured and Trez looks a threat. Come on you Lions.
-
Kodjia on for Wesley perhaps? Or maybe Deano will bollock WM and we shall see better second half.
-
Good half that. I don't recall us playing with so many behind the ball under Smith, so I'm encouraged to see we can mix it up tactically. I agree that our forward line could do with staying on their feet a bit. Trez has looked good, made some good runs. Hourihane and Taylor have done well. More of the same please Villa, no complaints and no regrets!
-
Right good stuff Villa, I’m off out for a meal in Bordeaux, don’t fuck it up boys,
-
I think Wes isn’t just a target man and we need to play the ball more into his feet. But this is part of his learning. He has to deal with the step up in quality and the expectations of being a top flight player in England.
-
Need to keep pressing. Let their heads go down second half. Geez this is worse than being the game
-
Right good stuff Villa, I’m off out for a meal in Bordeaux, don’t fuck it up boys,
Bon appétit !
-
CHEESE ALERT! The boys are back in town. UTFV
-
does feel like that emirates first game against Arse
could see us winning this 3-1
-
We actually deserve to be leading. I expect them to put us under huge pressure as the game goes on but we look a threat on the break.
-
Great stuff from us. Defended manfully, looked very dangerous on the break, plenty of pace. SJM is the best player on the park so far: he's got everything. Even though Spurs have created chances they're guilty of over-playing and we deserve the lead. In the first few minutes it was a bit heart in mouth but we've come to the party big time since then.
One negative point, Wesley hasn't done much except fall over too easy. In fact two or three of ours have gone to ground too easy, rolling around and then getting up moments later right as rain. I hate to see that.
-
He is 45 mins into his first PL game. He will learn.
-
Wesley has looked really strong well the ball was played high to him. I remember reading that players knew his temperament and would deliberately wind him up. So maybe a bit of coaching still needed. I'm sure he'll be a very decent player for us. Plus he's about to score a hattrick.
-
Very mature first half. Wes and AEG need to stay on their feet. They are not convincing thre ref.
-
Spurs could have scored a couple of times but they overplayed it. Happy for them to keep doing that all season long.
-
1-0 up at half time...that'll do. Keep it up Villa!
-
are we Fulham NRCock ?
-
Nrc grrr
-
brave performance so far
Trez has been pacey and has a bit of trickery
el ghazy and grealish has to step it up
Wesley its tough being the lone forward. he is mobile though for a big unit and working hard.
Engels looks class
Taylor and Elmo steady and dogged
-
Wesley clearly must be used to getting soft free-kicks in Europe, but I imagine that's a pretty short learning curve. Trez clearly doesn't like shooting on his left foot (shame!), but I've been impressed with the new boys apart from that.
Yes, the champions league finalists are dominating possession at home, but I think that's to be expected - but we've done more than OK, scored a great goal, and look dangerous on the break. I'd like to see us defend 10 yards further up the pitch, but I'm sure that's just a factor of being under a lot of pressure.
Clean sheet please!!
-
EVERYTHING about this league is stronger, faster and fitter than the championship.
This is a huge step up in class.
-
Pretty impressed with that from NRC there, he's spot on, Wesley did a great job of stopping the centre half from getting back as cover, which created the chance for the goal.
Engels was the best player on the pitch for me, exceptional debut so far.
-
To think realistically over time Targett will replace Taylor, Guilbert will replace Elmo, Doug replaces Conor, with the opportunity to mix in Jota and Marvellous. It’s a positive thought however this ends up.
-
Spurs could have scored a couple of times but they overplayed it. Happy for them to keep doing that all season long.
True, but we have had the best scoring chances.
Engels looks class.
-
EVERYTHING about this league is stronger, faster and fitter than the championship.
This is a huge step up in class.
It absolutely is and we will need to learn and adjust.
-
Slightly stressful. Shouldn't have started drinking at midday. Come on Villa!!
-
After 45 minutes the minnows need two if they are to make their dreams of a giant-killing come true.
-
To think realistically over time Targett will replace Taylor, Guilbert will replace Elmo, Doug replaces Conor, with the opportunity to mix in Jota and Marvellous. It’s a positive thought however this ends up.
Yes, and yet Conor and Taylor have had a decent first half.
-
After a shaky first few minutes I've been pleasantly surprised. Think we've put a lot into that first half. Hoping the fitness holds up!
-
Wes, stay on your feet. I bet Grealish was well pissed off at having to kick the ball out cos he was having a sulk. But him, El Ghazi and Trez will all be up to speed now with what is and isn't a foul.
Engels, superb.
Taylor, chat mate, chat.
We have never played like this before under Smith. Some balls on him to do it today. Bloke's a genius.
-
That’s 1.5 points in the bag then
-
Nice long ball from Mings for the goal.
-
And, annoyingly, lots of the Konza song before the game.
-
Slightly stressful. Shouldn't have started drinking at midday. Come on Villa!!
Looks like I picked the wrong day to quit sniffing glue
-
Is Guilbert injured?
-
Grealish and SJM have looked class acts even with the step up in level. Trezeguet looks dangerous and should have done better with the 2 chances he had.
El Ghazi very skillful but looking for FK's too much. Wesley looks a bit rattled and needs to calm down.
Defensively after a dodgy start we have been very good. Engels has won everything thats come his way. The joy Spurs are getting is in the wide areas. Need to be mindful of them exploiting that in the 2nd half.
-
Nice long ball from Mings for the goal.
But obviously if it was Harry McGuire it would be four times better.
-
It really is unbelievable how so many professional referees get away with playing to the home crowd. Scandalous.
-
Spurs could have scored a couple of times but they overplayed it. Happy for them to keep doing that all season long.
True, but we have had the best scoring chances.
Engels looks class.
Mm, agreed! We've done really well, if it ran for us it could have been 3-0.
-
I think whatever happens in the rest of this game, we don't look out of place in this league.
-
Nice long ball from Mings for the goal.
Did them all last season, including goal in the play off
-
Wes looks shell-shocked, but otherwise Villa is settling in and making Spurs bad.
Especially our midfield is amazing. Heaton commanding his defense with authority.
Come on Lions!
-
Tall blonde? Laursen mk 2?
-
It really is unbelievable how so many professional referees get away with playing to the home crowd. Scandalous.
Must admit I've not seen that. We've had plenty of free kicks, some of the pretty soft.
-
Nice long ball from Mings for the goal.
But obviously if it was Harry McGuire it would be four times better.
In all fairness he probably overhit it as he was looking for Wesley. Not complaining though!
-
I startled little AV celebrating the goal, apparently she raised her arms in celebration (aka shock) then went bank to sleep. Good girl. Come you Lions!

-
Nice to see the two owners in the directors with Tayls sitting behind them.
-
Tall blonde? Laursen mk 2?
Yes he's done very well so far.
-
Slightly stressful. Shouldn't have started drinking at midday. Come on Villa!!
Know what you mean. I've been trying to cut down on the booze, mate. But I drink when I watch Villa, and the more stressed I get, the faster I drink.
I'll probably have cirrhosis by Christmas!
-
Happy with the performance from all but could really do without the stress.
-
Great by Engels again
-
Engels is class.
-
Tall blonde? Laursen mk 2?
Yes he's done very well so far.
Reminds me more of Mellberg, let Mings do his Laursen imitation.
-
Christ this will be a long half, Spurs come out strong. Hopefully we can make another counter attack count.
-
Sissoko with an awful shot thank fuck
-
where was talor then
-
Hmm. This is getting very stretched.
-
Fuck sake. How much space?
-
That's the first time we've looked a bit ragged at the back.
-
We are being helped by spurs being staggeringly shit for a side touted for a tilt at the title.
-
Fuck off sky, check the bastarding history books, we're Aston Villa...
-
This is a nerve-wracking game.
-
Fuck off sky, check the bastarding history books, we're Aston Villa...
What they saying
-
That was a pen. Fuck this ref.
-
No penalty on McGinn, but Winks had a tug at his shirt beforehand which could easily have been a freekick on the edge of the box.
-
Sloppy header from Taylor leads to this pressure. Need to be more tidy in midfield.
-
engels is class
-
Omg Engels! New favorite player
-
VAR says no
-
I'll be very surprised if there's no more goals in this game
-
Time for a change, Dean.
-
This is gong to be long 2nd half.
-
If somehow we hang on to this Engels will have been involved in one of the best Villa debuts ever.
But fuck me we have to get a hold of the ball
Jota coming on
-
I'm mightily impressed with Engels
-
Wesley needs to fucking stop moaning. Fucking just get on with it.
-
Jota coming on, don't think that's the worst sub in the world. We need to hang onto the ball at some stage this half.
-
The arm wipes from Wes are worrying. Adapt mate
-
Jota for Trez
-
Tottenham seem to be getting frustrated now. They look rattled. Keep it up Villa.
-
Minutes are still supposed to be 60 seconds, yeah?
-
Love SJM
-
Jota for Trez
The Dean Smith version of shoring things up.
-
Better Wes!
-
I think we will score another goal tbh.
-
wtf VAR for potential red card??!!
-
I reckon we'll see a Luiz debut pretty soon given is Eriksen coming on.
-
wtf VAR for potential red card??!!
Looking at stamping. Easy one
-
Stay cool Wes, you're doing fine.
-
Minutes are still supposed to be 60 seconds, yeah?
I think we’ve entered the four-dimensional space-time continuum.
-
Erikssen on. This could get tricky.
-
Mings! Love you
-
Having Tom Heaton back there makes me feel better
-
Fuckthe ref is shit
-
Fuck off ref
-
Thank God for Mings.
-
Haha mings... love you more
-
I tell you what, Mings and Engels could turn out to be one of the best central defensive pairings in the country.
-
This ref is shit. Do your job you twat. Fuck.
-
Would bring on Kodj now tbh, surprised Davis isn't on bench as he'd be even more ideal for what we need for last 20 minutes.
Just need the CF to hold it up, win some cheap free kicks and we can slow the game down that way.
-
Kin'ell
-
That's fucking awful from the ref, thankfully VAR means if they'd scored it'd have been disallowed, that's where it's a good idea for me.
Mings is having a great 2nd half.
Having Tom Heaton back there makes me feel better
you fucking jinx! :D
-
I tell you what, Mings and Engels could turn out to be one of the best central defensive pairings in the country.
I agree sir!
-
That's fucking awful from the ref, thankfully VAR means if they'd scored it'd have been disallowed, that's where it's a good idea for me.
Mings is having a great 2nd half.
Having Tom Heaton back there makes me feel better
you fucking jinx! :D
LOL I nearly massively fucked things up
-
Desperate for some fresh legs in midfield now.
-
"It was like the ref tried to turn his back on that cynical foul on Grealish there. What an absolute moron. "
"Oh my god this ref is an absolute disgrace "
"What the feck is the referee looking at?! Just looking around as play is ongoing! "
Neutral opinions of the ref today....
-
Have we cloned Mings? There is definitely more than one of him on the pitch. He is f*cking everywhere.
-
We’ve got to keep a hold of the fucking ball.
-
Southgate is there apparently, what odds on Mings and Grealish in the next England squad?
-
Kodjia on for Wes
-
Making stupid mistakes and getting dispossessed. First Jota then Jack.
-
Nakamba could probably help.
-
Wtf this back line has been awesome so far
-
1-1.
-
Fuck me
-
Fuck off
-
Been coming. Only one winner now.
-
Fuuuuuuck
-
Ah fuck.
-
was gonna happen ffs
too much pressure
-
Been coming. Only one winner now.
And who might that be?
-
All from Jack losing possession and we never got the ball back after that and were under the cos non stop. It's been coming sadly.
-
They totally deserve that, you've got to say. It's been the fucking alamo second half, as good as Mings and Engels have been
-
Great save from Heaton at first
-
Couldn't clear from the corner.
Kodj on now. Would've put him on five minutes ago although doubt it would've prevented goal.
Shame none of our DMs are match fit as that would've been obvious sub.
-
I said earlier I think we need to bring Luiz on when they made their change and I'm sticking with that, we needed some fresh legs in there.
-
Harsh on Heaton after a really good save but it was an excellent finish.
-
That's a shame. Not a disaster though. We've been good.
-
We’ll have to find a better way of approaching games. This defend deep and hope for the best will rarely work at this level.
-
Fuck it. It had been coming though. We can't get out of our half.
-
Wankers! Celebrating like they've won the Champions League.
-
All came from another stupid giveaway. Spurs are just so much faster to the ball
-
All from Jack losing possession and we never got the ball back after that and were under the cos non stop. It's been coming sadly.
Too many time being caught in possession. Hopefully they learn quickly from this game.
-
id get conor off
-
We’ll have to find a better way of approaching games. This defend deep and hope for the best will rarely work at this level.
Were not going to play Spurs every week thankfully
-
We will score again.
-
Suspect we’re heading for a narrow loss which is a good result. Generally poor game from attackers, worryingly.
Strange selection decisions.
This game was always a free hit though so onto the next one.
-
We’ll have to find a better way of approaching games. This defend deep and hope for the best will rarely work at this level.
It's better than getting spanked 5-0 though, to be fair.
-
Oh, how I've missed these ****** singing that slow song.
-
Fucking hell. Terrible free kick to concede
-
Idiot FK to give away with Eriksen on the pitch.
-
id get conor off
Luiz should have been on for him 10 minutes ago
-
This wasn’t the situation to bring Jota on.
-
We will score again.
Don't know where, don't know when
-
We will score again.
We haven't created a chance this half.
-
And now we've got that dirge of a chant
-
We need an outlet to get out. Far too much pressure.
-
Fantastic save.
-
what a save
-
What a fuckin save!
-
Fantastic save.
Top class.
-
Fucking hell, we've got a tasty keeper as well.
-
We need an outlet to get out. Far too much pressure.
We’ve got no options to get the ball to stick. Really worries about being so reliant on Wesley based on that showing.
-
Come on you Villa boys! Get the winner,Kodj!
-
Or kodjia
-
Ffs kodjia
-
Get the fuck out Villa FFS. Far too deep.
-
Sloppy again. Sort it out Villa
-
kodja was awful then
-
We need an outlet to get out. Far too much pressure.
We’ve got no options to get the ball to stick. Really worries about being so reliant on Wesley based on that showing.
Is Davis injured again? Odd he's not on the bench ahead of Lansbury.
-
We've defended valiantly this half but we've been wank with the ball
-
I really think Davis could do a job for us if we're going to be playing like this a lot this season. He holds the ball up very well.
-
We need an outlet to get out. Far too much pressure.
We’ve got no options to get the ball to stick. Really worries about being so reliant on Wesley based on that showing.
Is Davis injured again? Odd he's not on the bench ahead of Lansbury.
Another weird decision unless he’s injured. He’s have been a much better option than kodjia to help us get a grip.
-
Doug for Conor
-
We need an outlet to get out. Far too much pressure.
We’ve got no options to get the ball to stick. Really worries about being so reliant on Wesley based on that showing.
I am pretty sure the pitch side microphone just picked up Dean Smith telling Jack not to drop so deep and be the out ball. He was definitely screaming at Jack.
-
I feel calmer now that Douglas is on. Go on Doug.
-
Don't give a shit about the result, but this defence is as good as Mellberg Laursen type
-
Nice touch Doug.
-
Fucking about again
-
AEG pulled up
-
Bollox!
-
ffs Jack.
2-1.
-
Fucking Grealish again
-
Fuck off
-
El Ghazi pulled his calf or cramp?
-
Grealish at fault 😖
-
Jack fucking about again.
-
That’s on Grealish
-
Ah shit.
-
Jack’s fucked us there. And he’s down that more than once this game, fannying around and losing possession on the edge of the box.
-
Got what we deserved with that. Ridiculously sloppy from jack
-
Stupid mistakes coupled with Spurs just being all over us.
-
ffs what are they doing
getting caught in fucking possession like that
-
Lucky bastards.
-
Both goals from Grealish, I love him but he's been poor today, and shit second half.
-
He got away with an even worse one earlier. Silly boy.
-
Too casual at times this 2nd half. Mings and Engels have been heroic. Don't deserve to be on the losing team
-
Oh fuck off.
-
Grealish at fault for both goals.
-
Three years away but same old feeling after late goals against. Gutted.
-
Jack is not good enough at this level.
-
It's been obvious since minute 1 of the 2nd half we would lose this. 2-1 flatters us too. Some good performances though. Worst game from Jack in years.
-
Jack learn your lesson. You cannot fucking mess about on the edge of the area.
-
Jack is not good enough at this level.
Fuck off is he
-
I know that we were up against it from the start but I’m disappointed this was our tactic first game back. We never tried to take the game to Spurs. Against a side this good the door was going to cave in eventually.
-
Jack is not good enough at this level.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
-
Problem is he’s been playing like he can skin 3 players like in the championship.
-
Jack is not good enough at this level.
Behave. Don't talk bolx.
-
Jack is not good enough at this level.
Calm down sunshine
-
Both goals from Grealish, I love him but he's been poor today, and shit second half.
Yep sloppiness from Jack for both. He needs to learn.
-
Jack won't have impressed Southgate at all today. That's really pissed me off.
-
Lesson for Jack. Got to be better than that.
-
Which is good in some ways, bad in others.
-
Jack's had a couple of seasons of getting clogged by shit footballers and earning easy free kicks.
He's going to have start producing without getting fouled now.
-
Double bollox!
-
Fully deserved for Spurs we’ve done nothing all second half. We give the ball away constantly and dwell on the ball too long can’t do it at this level.
-
Wankers
-
Lulz, we've fallen apart
-
Fuck, it was looking so good 10 minutes ago.
-
We’ve just tired badly which is understandable. Plenty to be encouraged about.
-
Jack is not good enough at this level.
Youre writing him after one game against the Champins league finalists ?
-
Game over.
Fucking Spudz.
-
Get it together you fuckers. Play for pride.
-
Jota looks lost.
-
Fully deserved for Spurs we’ve done nothing all second half. We give the ball away constantly and dwell on the ball too long can’t do it at this level.
Jack and Jota have done this repeatedly. Not tried to score this half. One shot from El Gazi from distance
-
Jack is not good enough at this level.
Go and dry your panties out you wet arse.
-
Weak and sloppy in the second half.
-
Bollox.
-
Harsh scoreline.
-
Harsh scoreline.
This
-
I still believe. Generally we defend well
-
I think it has been a case of men against boys today.
They have been miles stronger, faster and faster thinking than us all over the pitch.
We have looked like a championship team playing above our level today.
We MUST learn from this.
-
Apart from SJM, the 2 CB and Heaton we've been shit this half.
-
Harsh scoreline.
Not sure really. They've missed a good 6 or 7 good chances. They are a good side, unfortunately.
-
Harsh scoreline.
Nah about right for me. We’ve sat too deep, not been good enough at clearing our lines and very sloppy.
-
Harsh scoreline.
We’ve let them have 20 shots this half alone. Nothing harsh about it really.
-
Too casual at times this 2nd half. Mings and Engels have been heroic. Don't deserve to be on the losing team
You can include our goalkeeper in that list too. Decent performance and nearly a point away to the Champions League finalists but over the ninety minutes they wore us down, tired us out and due to that we made crucial mistakes.
-
Harsh scoreline.
It's really not. Luiz should have been on around 15 minutes earlier, our midfield was non-existent for most of the second half
-
Wait for it.... Fulham comparisons coming I am sure. Gutted.
-
Harsh scoreline.
This
They've battered us non stop for 45 mins.
-
Apart from SJM, the 2 CB and Heaton we've been shit this half.
Wtf is with this negativity?
-
We'll have them at home.
-
Apart from SJM, the 2 CB and Heaton we've been shit this half.
Wtf is with this negativity?
Yeah how dare I say what actually happened.
-
We are good enough at this level. We are going to be ok.
-
As said above, positive is Mings, Engels, Heaton we’re class and kept us in it far longer than we deserved.
-
Harsh, but Eriksen was the difference second half together with sloppiness from Jack. Need to learn lessons from this
-
Apart from SJM, the 2 CB and Heaton we've been shit this half.
Wtf is with this negativity?
2nd half might be bringing some PTSD flashbacks to our last run in this league.
-
Harsh scoreline.
This
Not really. They camped in our half for the whole of the 2nd half.
We defended very well for large periods, but I don't think there can be any complaints with the scoreline.
-
Apart from SJM, the 2 CB and Heaton we've been shit this half.
Wtf is with this negativity?
Yeah how dare I say what actually happened.
Outplayed, but shit?
-
Our next four games are 'winable on paper' and I saw enough today to think we can beat Bournemouth, Everton, Palace and West Ham.
-
We just ran out of steam, Kane's first was a gut punch and then we got suckered again a few minutes later.
-
Apart from SJM, the 2 CB and Heaton we've been shit this half.
Wtf is with this negativity?
Yeah how dare I say what actually happened.
Outplayed, but shit?
Yes, a number of our players were shit in the second half.

I expected us to lose, but after being 1 up for so long I started to get my hopes up. I think to be fair this was a pretty good performance against last years Champions league finalists, onward and upwards.

Played well, got beaten on to next week. Lots of promise and at times it showed that they didn't know each other.

I generously think he saw this as opportunity to give certain players extra minutes, an extended pre season if you like. You could see that from the team he picked and the subs he made. I think Dean saw today as a game where if it worked we got something out of it or it gives minutes to certain players and the season starts at Bournemouth.

Good effort...but just not good enough to keep last seasons Champion Leagues finalists out in the second half.
Sitting back at trying to defend a lead or a draw is not in the DNA of this team, and we struggled to get out of our own half or keep possession. Still a work in progress and a lot of work to do, but we have to look to the positives of the first half. We'll be ok against most of the other teams in this league.

Apart from SJM, the 2 CB and Heaton we've been shit this half.
Wtf is with this negativity?
Yeah how dare I say what actually happened.
Outplayed, but shit?
Yes, a number of our players were shit in the second half.
Agree that there were many heroes. But also some sloppy shit - thought Wesley, Jota, El Ghazi, Kodjia could have given more.

Jack is not good enough at this level.
Go and dry your panties out you wet arse.

They forced the issue and got the breakthrough. They were lucky with the second but you can't really say they didn't deserve it overall.
We gave them the ball back way too much but I thought under the circumstances every one of the starters did quite well, in fact McGinn, Heaton, Mings and Engels were excellent throughout. Grealish and Hourahane were very good and the forwards all showed glimmers of promise. The fullbacks did well too, the only 2 that I was concerned with were Kodjia who looked like a fan who had run on the pitch and Douglas who looked knackered despite only being on the pitch 10 minutes.

Good game. Fitness showed in the end. A lot of positives for your manager to take from this though.
Looking forward to visiting villa park again for the reply.
All the best for the season
(ps. to that member saying JG isn't good enough at this level: do you know what happens to butter in a microwave mate?)

I think he has left the building.

I agree, fitness and Erikson really showed.

You and every other Spurs fan is butters. Jack is an exquisite premium product that adds richness and flavour to any dish. You are margarine, a grey sludge with shit highlights. Erikson was the only player with a footballing brain in your team, and he wants out.

I suggest you re-read the post. It was aimed at the poster, not Grealish.

Must be my misunderstanding, all excited for the first game of the season. As someone who doesn’t use a microwave I was guessing a cross between melting and a hot mess.

I read that in a Grealish Brummie accent. Surely there is a gif of this.
Edit.
