Welcome to Guess The Crowd for the 2019 / 20 season!
Hello again, everybody!
Fresh from the fantastic Play Off Final and an even more fantastic pre-season than we’ve been used to for our beloved ASTON VILLA, the GTC teams are also collectively back up where we belong!
So, priorities beckon for all GTC team managers. Naturally, you’ll introduce the new players on your team to each other, arrange the WhatsApp group, Tweet the welcome Gifs and film all those jolly ‘ad lib’ Instagrams on the training pitch, to prepare for all the goals you’ll score during the season ahead!
The lads might also have to do a bit of running around in those little black crop tops, to get fit for a stunning season of Guess The Crowd which kicks off later on this evening!
If you're new to this:
The idea in every round is to guess what you think the official attendance figure will be, for that match. I post the total attendance that AVFC releases to the press at the end of the match on the Guess thread and award points according to how close you are to the total.
GTC is played for every home game and all Cup games. This means there are some overlapping rounds.
Usual rules apply again, this season.
These are:
One guess only in a round, per team.
Accidentally posting a second guess will not get you more points as only your first guess is counted.
No editing of your post.
Editing means you get only 1 point that round. Aaaaaaargh!
You must post your guess before Kick Off.
POINTS!!!
What could you get?
11 Points for a Brucie Bonus - which is for a spot- on dead accurate guess, usually early on - check the BB interval in my launch post of the round to win this. ;)
10 points. For a spot- on accurate guess posted after the BB interval.
9 points. For a guess up to 10 away from the official attendance total.
And then...
8. For a guess up to 50 away
7. For a guess up to 100 away
6. For a guess up to 200 away
5. For a guess up to 300 away
4. For a guess up to 400 away
3. For a guess up to 500 away
2. For a guess up to 1000 away
1. For entering that round! :)
And!!!
This season we have DEANO’s DOUBLE DIVIDEND, as well. Whatever the Villa goal tally is, the teams getting that number of points in that round get DOUBLE! Ooooh!
(Look at my post for more detail about this Bonus in the GTC trailer thread, posted yesterday. Thanks to Godfrey Brian for the DD inspiration and to wittonwarrior for suggesting that there was room in the competition to win extra points, as well!)
Other info if you have or haven’t played before, in the PL!
Villa Park: 42, 682 ( FA Directory, 2019/20).
GTC rounds are posted about 10 days before a regular home league match and about a week before for a Cup Extra round. Overlapping rounds are usually shorter, to avoid overwhelming Heroes Discussion with multiple Guess threads!
Check the launch post for details of kick off and if it's a cup round, the capacity at the host ground when we're playing Away.
There will be fewer League matches to play in GTC than there were during the last 3 seasons. If a team has not posted a guess in 4 consecutive League GTC rounds, the team will be moved with their points so far, straight to Division 5. Guessing again will revive the team to Division 4!
Once there's a space in any Division, the top ranking team in the Division below is promoted immediately to fill it!
You can join in on any round in the season. Keep your team active and you’ll get promoted, as soon as possible.
It’s never too late to join in and Guess The Crowd!!!

In case anybody is wondering, there are a couple of overlapping Guess The Crowd rounds coming up very fast.
1. I have launched GTC Round 2 ( Villa v Everton) today in Heroes Discussion. If you haven’t played GTC before, Round 2 will move up to the stickied section after Round 1 (Bournemouth) is over, this weekend. Completed rounds are moved in here, with your points added on the end ASAP :)
2. I’ll launch the League Cup Extras 1 (Crewe v Villa) next week. The date of this fixture is Tuesday 27th, so it will be up for just 4 days before the match.
Cup rounds are shorter and the BB is wild all through. The ground capacity is quoted from the Club site / current FA directory, as I assume these are current, unlike the Wiki or sports pages. Allocation and ticket sales are entirely up to individual teams to find out/ share/ assess and decide how relevant they are! ;)
Regular GTC Round 3 is not due until mid September so there’ll be a bit of a break until then.
Very polite request: if possible I’d appreciate any general questions / comments on GTC in here, please. It keeps the Guess threads easier for me to navigate when i’m adding up all your points!
And god knows, The old abacus will be smoking this season, what with working out the Deano’s Double Dividend as well as the regular fields, and the Brucie! :)

Division 4 includes every active team which is not already listed in Divisions 1, 2 or 3. If your team was active at the end of last season, you should appear somewhere!
New teams- If you have just guessed for the first time in Guess The Crowd you should appear in Division 4.

Teams listed with a score of 0 in all 4 Divisions were active at the end of last season but have not posted a guess yet, this season. If this is you, you have four regular rounds to post a guess and revive your team.
Currently, this will be GTC round 4, Villa v Burnley, 28th September. (Cup rounds are excepted.)
If you miss 4 consecutive rounds, your team is relegated directly to Division 5 :'(
...and all the top teams get promoted ;D. You’ll be very popular!

Meanwhile, f1sav and Gregorys Boy are still sauntering along at the wrong end of the players tunnel.
This is a huge spread of points within a Division for so early in the season, but D3 is also famous as the hangout of the rugged individualists of H&V, so all is explained.

GTC 13 will be Villa v Tottingham Spurs for Feb 16th at 2 pm, apparently. :P

‘Once there's a space in any Division, the top ranking team in the Division below is promoted immediately to fill it!’
I couldn’t separate AlexAlexCropley and CT so they both got promoted.

I don’t see any chance of Villa v Wolves happening when it’s supposed to, on April 4th.
I’m keeping an eye on the news and this season may yet revive, if they can get the antibody tests going by late April for example.

There’s an article by Jonathan Northcroft in The Times today saying that there are alternatives being discussed by those in charge of football. One is to finish the season starting in June, which would mean packing a lot of matches into a short time.
Another is to play the 2 matches cancelled for the Carabao Cup Final, which would bring everyone in the Premier League up to the same number of games, allowing them to finish the season at that point, but short by a quarter of the season.
Relegation and promotion could go ahead on that basis.
So could the last round of Guess The Crowd 19/20!

To everybody playing Guess The Crowd 2019/20:
* There’s a very tiny chance that GTC could finish the season, if games are played in the summer or in the autumn.
* If they’re behind closed doors, it might be more of a challenge to establish a crowd total.
* If the season is (gulp) voided I will cheer and dance wildly, singing, We Did Survive!! UTV! UTV! Oh yessss! will be very upset because i’d planned a last ditch dramatic revival from mid Division 2.
* Next season’s fixtures can’t be published until there’s a way to resolve this one.
So How are we to resolve Guess The Crowd 2019/20?
I’m going to be guided by the science.

As i was dangerously near slipping into Division 2 had the season continued and thus having the ignominy of being the first Brucie Bonus winner to ever be relegated [it was a couple of years ago mind] I am happy we drew a line under the season as it stands.
Thank you for all the hard work and organisation Lou. Spreadsheets are ace! Congratulations to all the league winners.

Good decision in the end, although I've only just noticed as I had been taking a break from excessive reading H&V multiple times a day, when essentially nothing was happening in the real world.
Hugely enjoyable GTC as per my previous 2 seasons, shame I didn't make more progress. Will have to tune up Dr Watson (IBM) a bit more. Doesn't cope well with dodgy official crowd figures for cup games, or DDD!
