Some pictures floating around of VP getting a bit of a Facelift. Hopefully the back of the North Stand will get the same.
Any pics or info?

On that first photo there's a quick job they could do while they're up there.

Has the back of the North Stand been cleaned?

It may have been but it’s the equivalent of putting lipstick on a pig

Should read H.D Ellis? Or did you have something else in mind?

I saw a pic where it showed grey cladding near the top and rest of it cleaned, think it’s your last posted pic. Nice to see our great owners spending cash on and off the pitch. I like the references to villa park and “home”.
What badge was at top of north before then , or has it just been cleaned ?
No pics of any demolition or temp shop/ticket office yet ? I thought planning application stated between July 22 and mid August completion for first stage

The 'Never A Borrower Nor a Lender Be Stand'
-
Reading elsewhere, that pic of villa banner between DE stand and holte is the rear of a newly installed VAR screen.
I’m sure I read a while ago that our other screens were also being replaced or upgraded

Thanks for the pictures. What a gorgeous, old, iconic stadium Villa have! I love the new signages. Tastefully done, I think.

My step son was there yesterday and day before (He works for Open reach) and putting lots of new fibre cables into that area so I would imagine it is for the VAR area also

I think we might be talking back to Witton Lane, Ron Saunders etc.

As I've said elsewhere I think it's a fitting tribute to him.

LOL mate no I knew very well that Dave meant they should take down the Doug Ellis name from the stand :)

Are they going to do anything with that big ugly plain bit under the club name?

Needs a claret wrap doesn't it

I think it says anyone who has placed Dean Smith 1st in the sack race is likely to be barking up the wrong tree!

Judging by your user name you were bound to say that.
-
I just hope it withstands the weather, I've seen cheap fixes like this look a right mess after a harsh winter. Think the images of DS and Jack are a bit creepy for a stadium too.plain claret would have looked less cheap looking
-
it's hugely better than it was the last time I saw it in May!

Good grief. Just enjoy it.

It looks fantastic. Great to see just about every level of the club being given an overhaul this summer. Not just the first team squad but the youth coaching, the stadium, the new kit, new sponsors. We can be massive again!

Good to see the old girl being tarted-up a bit.
-
Well done Villa. Another job well done.
-
The old girl's had a bit of a facelift looks much better.
-
Looks good.
I'd seen that we were getting the giant screens inside the ground replaced this season. I wonder if they will do anything with the ones in the carparks. I imagine the one by the North Stand is going anyway as will look pretty strange looking over the levelled earth.

Bravo, almost tempted to change to that.
-
Looks a lot better than what was there before, I hope they can do something similar with the Trinity. Really like it.

Drove past today. Quite surprised to see the images on the side of the Academy, Peter Withe, Sir Brian, etc are being replaced by lovely old images of the stadium in it's various stages over it's 127 years of evolution. Great touch, these guys seem smitten by the clubs heritage. Im guessing and hoping those ones that have been removed will be found a new home.

It’s for this reason that I don’t think they’d move us to a new stadium in a different location.
-
Even though I think stadiums like the Emirates are really, really nice, I’d hate for us to build a new one.
I’m old fashioned and love a good old four stranded ground, with corner gaps, and being able to see out from them. Too many stadiums now you can’t even tell where you are once you’re in them.

I would imagine doing what Spurs did and moving to a temporary home like the Alexander stadium while Villa Park is rebuilt would be more likely than moving somewhere else altogether.
Admittedly the location doesn't do us any favours. Coming in from the Holte side, with the church and Aston Hall is fine, but the other side less so. Its certainly not somewhere I'd fancy strolling around on my own.

Goodness me. It’s really not that scary.

When the H&V 20th celebration was at The Barton I decided to walk back to my hotel. ( I think I booked the Campanile because it was cheap and I knew I wouldn't see much of it).
On the way I was circled by a police van who then stopped me and asked what I was doing. I told them and they basically told me I was an idiot for doing that on my own at that time of night and insisted on giving me a lift back. Funnily enough the staff didn't bat an eye at a guest being dropped off by a van full of coppers.

My Brother saw loads of the old signs outside the club shop on Sunday, he asked if he could have one or two and was told "no, some historian is coming to look at them but they will probably end up in a skip"
There were loads of them stacked up and the smaller ones were in boxes

Ermmm.... Yes!
Scoring a few goals in a local derby win might be enough to make you a legend down the road. Not with us.
-
Although we may as well debate who would be on our respective teams to keep us occupied on deadline day...
-
Sam Hardy
Howard Spencer
James Cowan
Paul McGrath
Ian Taylor
Dennis Mortimer
Gordan Cowans
Eric Houghton
Gary Shaw
Dwight Yorke
Archie Hunter
Not quite sure what formation they would play, but fuck it.
-
A case could be made for Agbonlahor in a best Villa eleven of the premier league. But even then I'd pick Yorke and Benteke over him.
-
Tom Waring, Harry Hampton up front.

I hope the Ultimate XI isn't just Premier League. Sounds a bit small-time.

I doubt it would be. All the stuff around the ground about VP being our home since the 19th century shows that they have a better understanding of our heritage than most.
-
Let's hope so. The only guaranteed place is McGrath, either way!
-
That sounds fascinating and I'm really interested to see who goes up! There are probably at least five strong candidates for each position.

Just got back from the home of football, purchasing my away top which is five sizes too small for me.
The signs and general facelift look great, the North Stand has been transformed as is the Witton Lane side of the ground.
And I look great in my away shirt, I'll try to upload some pics later.

I don't see why they would, it's not like they couldn't do something to the ground now if they really wanted to.

A bedtime story related to recent posts.
Two of my b-loser mates painted a blue nose on the rusty iron head by the Sty on the Friday before the infamous Enkelman derby game. They had a couple of Rangers friends coming down for both the weekend and the game, and when they picked them up in town on the Saturday morning, they drove towards the ground to show them their handiwork. To their horror, someone had gone up there since and painted ‘AVFC’ on it. Under cover of darkness later on, they got rid of the offending graffiti and restored the head to its former glory.
In the early hours of Monday morning, they were in an all-night drinking den in Alum Rock when they received a phone call informing them that someone had daubed ‘AVFC’ all over it yet again. They asked the landlord of said establishment if he had any paint, and he told them he only had some black and some white. They reasoned that anything was better than ‘AVFC’ and borrowed the paint. On the way,one pal turned to the other and said “you do the painting, I’ll do the cutting in”.
They were wearing designer clothes so stripped down to their pants before getting on with the job. It was now early morning and Brummies on the way to work in their cars and on buses were treated to my two almost-naked mates painting the head in the middle of rush hour. Soon enough, and before they had finished painting, the police turned up and threatened them with arrest unless they ceased, desisted and pissed off. They complied and wandered off towards their car, parked round the corner.
The driver was many times over the limit and didn’t want to cause a fuss. But having seen the police car drive off, one pal turned to the other and said “fuck it, it’s only criminal damage”, and back they went to finish the job. A few minutes later a van full of Old Bill turned up and my mates thought this was it, they were definitely going to be arrested this time. But the coppers were laughing and when my mate asked “ain’t you gonna nick us?”, the OB replied: “No, when we heard over the radio that there were two little fat middle-aged bald blokes painting the head in their under-crackers we had to come down for a look.’
True story.

I don’t understand new signage and cladding on ticket office? I thought that the demolition process in the application had to be completed by end of August ?

Thats funny. I'm guessing they had been drinking in the 3 A's? Another genuinelly true story here : On the night Blues were relegated from the Prem (around 10 years ago) my mate was drinking with some lads in his local after the Villa game. For a bet they spray painted a bed sheet with "ha ha ha Small Heath back where they belong" then drove up to the Royal George next to the sty. All the noses were in there drowning their sorrows. They quickly tied the banner next to a big blues flag hanging on the railings outside the pub and took pictures. One bloke came out of the pub and shouted "keep right on lads" to them. He couldn't see what was written on the bamner from where he was standing. My mate replied "up the blues" They got back in the car and drove off leaving the banner on the fence. Sometime after while talking to my nephew who drinks in there after the match i told him. No names mentioned for obvious reason. He said "yeah i remember that. Everyone was fuckin screwing. They took it down and burnt it"

Yes. He’s my mate as well. (Not one of the head painters, although it’s possible they were involved).

It sits on the site of the old atlas pub which I was born opposite.
From the age of about 7 I was chief bottle stacker , and also in charge of nuts and crisps ooh the responsibility .
I have some great memories of that pub and it had some great/ odd characters happy days

A few of us went there after the Juventus game when they beat us 2-1. It was the last week of the Atlas, they said once all the beer’s gone it was closing, and they had a topless barmaid to tempt perverts, which obviously worked.

I missed that

Back on topic, I drove from the M6 onto the Expressway today, the signage at the Holte/Witton looks fabulous from there.

Was thinking the same. Even coming up on the 10:23 out of Euston for exactly that reason.

The 'i' is represented by the claw marks.

Quavers?

I thought the signage was awesome and well done to whoever thought of the concept. Just an OCD niggle from me, on the inside of the ground can the DE Stand be finished- the top balcony frontage finishes about 60% along- perhaps it is to stop a restricted view for the away supporters but for years it has looked incomplete and unfinished.

It is very common for companies and brand names to remove apostrophes from brand names*. It is also common for us to add a possessive ('s) that doesn't exist.** This annoys the purists but you can't tell a company how to write its name. I'd say it's not "McGregor's" suite/bar/function room, it's "McGregors" because that is how they have chosen to name it.
* Barclay's became Barclays, Waterstone's became Waterstones, and so on.
** We called Safeway "Safeway's" before it became, erm, ,"Morrisons". F.W Woolworth became both "Woolworth's" and "Woolworths", and of course you have "Tesco" which is colloquially referred to as "Tesco's", not to be confused with "the Tescos" who know who they am.
Interestingly, the home of golf is "St Andrews" whereas the home of the unwashed is "St Andrew's".

I recall a few years back, Birmingham City Council were talking about removing all apostrophes from road signs.

That sounds like an excellent use of resources.

Maybe they were worried that BE was moving back to Brum and he meant business.
