It is great watching our squad sing this, but how did it come about being associated with us? Or have I been living under a rock just lately and it is common knowledge?
-
I was a bit confused when this came on but it's a great song.
-
We stole it from the Boston Red Sox.

Was wondering the same.
-
Wherever it came from, the squad are loving it.
This is a great watch.

It's become a regular at One Day / T20 Cricket and came originally, as Mr Shin said, from our Red Sox
I saw Neil Diamond perform Sweet Caroline live in Boston at a 4th July concert
-
We stole it from the Boston Red Sox.
This post is....so good, so good
-
Yes, but when did it become a Villa thing? And how?
-
Just the players singing it is my guess, Derby players sang it after Leeds. Probably just because it's catchy.

And not many words to remember - they are footballers, after all!!
-
There's a good video on one of the Facebook groups of Whelan singing it, back in the hotel where he was staying with his family (some fans in there too) and he, very generously picked up the whole bar tab for the night for everyone!!
-
He deserves a 12 months contract for that alone in my opinion.
-
Anyway I approve, a good catchy song that I like. As long as it doesn't turn out that somebody shit like Middlesbrough or Stoke sing it.

Sweet Caroline
Neil Diamond
Where it began, I can't begin to knowing
But then I know it's growing strong
Was in the spring
Then spring became the summer
Who'd have believed you'd come along
Hands, touching hands
Reaching out, touching me, touching you
Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good
I'd be inclined
To believe they never would
But now I
Look at the night and it don't seem so lonely
We filled it up with only two
And when I hurt
Hurting runs off my shoulders
How can I hurt when I'm holding you
One, touching one
Reaching out, touching me, touching you
Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good
I'd be inclined
To believe they never would
Oh no, no
Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good
Sweet Caroline
I believe they never could
Sweet Caroline
-
Sure it's been used in Wembley previously (for us and others) to get the crowd going pre kick off.
Big with the boxing crowd n'all.
-
It is sung at a number of grounds and our fans always join in. Best was at Stoke in February, we sang, they didn't so they took it off.
-
I'm appreciating that today's major concern on here is why our players sing Sweet Caroline. It's kind of a different vibe to this time last year. It's so good!
-
this was always a favourite in the King Edward VII if I remember right...well it always seemed to be playing when we were in there :)
UTV
The Doc
-
It became a Villa thing at Half time at Stoke. The bloke on the PA played it, Stoke weren’t singing along so we did and the players were already out with a flea in their ears from Smith and the rest as they say is history.....
-
on the song subject
We are the only team in the world that would walk up Wembley steps to Black Sabbath (obvious reasons)
and then Unmade silent movie
have to say I love all that because it's unique to us

-
We stole it from the Boston Red Sox.
Who stole it from me and my mates in 1978 from the Beir Keller below Bogarts on New Street. Mind you, after 3 Litres of Lowenbrau you'd sing anything.
-
It got back "en vogue" with the cricket T20 and one dayers quite a while ago (last year)...Bumble used to bang on about it all the time...I've been singing it for a good year and it's "so good so good so good" to hear the boys belting it out....
-
In 2010 we went to Silverspoons before the League Cup Final and it was all a bit weirdly flat until they played Sweet Caroline and everyone belted it out.
Jane & I have felt like it’s been our anthem ever since! It’s great for us to see it taking off like it has!
-
I'm very impressed you could remember what you were singing at the Bier Kellar Bren'd!
Favourite haunt of mine too at that time, but after all that Lowenbrau could never remember what we were singing!!
Still struggling to get my voice back. After match celebrations in the Green Man garden got a bit lively for an old un!!
-
Anybody else think this should replace Don't Look Back in Anger? Sweet Carolina is loved by the players, exemplifies their connection with the fans, will always be associated with Monday at Wembley ....and can still be sung after a night out on the Lowenbrau!
-

Ha. On occasion there we even had a Caroline with us and she was sweet too, still is as well at 60.
Friday night Beir Kellar, Villa Park Saturday, you new Villa were about to take over the world. Sort of the same feeling now minus the certainty.

It was definately sang at half time at Stoke and it seemed to give the whole away end a lift. We are all turning into Diamond-ettes!
-
What is the deal with "Unmade silent movie" I know when we used to play it, but why did we become associated with the tune? Try explaining it to a 15 year old Villa fan...
-
Sweet Caroline is sung in all the bars in Vilamoura...I only got back from there a few days ago and it always gets everyone joining in! Would be a good choice if Don’t Look Back in Anger is replaced.

The club seem to be paying attention to detail and they got the playlist spot on. Can’t remember which Sabbath song they played...was it Paranoid?
-
Yes, but when did it become a Villa thing? And how?
A video took off after the Albion shootout of the team singing it in the dressing room and that's where it took off, I'm pretty sure.
AVTV asked Jack why they chose that song and he said that he really liked the lyric "Good times never seemed so good".
-

I think it was Tony Butler that started using it, and then we started playing it before games/at half time.
-
"Smith had always hankered to be a performer and - under the name of the Amos Gherkin Quartet - secretly made a record using EMI's equipment.
Called Theme from an Unmade Silent Movie, its only success was as a cover which went to number one all over South America; and, to his chagrin, Aston Villa played it for years as a prelude to kick-off at their home matches."
-
Sweet Caroline has been belted out at a Twickenham at half time and full time for as long as I can remember.
-

It was played as the team came out back in the 70s. I don’t think it was meant to be an anthem/signature tune. In fact, another instrumental always followed it but would always be cut short as the game started.
Tony Butler came along at around the same time and also began playing the tune on his show. This is when it really kicked off but it was definitely played at VP before butler had his show.
-
It was sung by Villa fans in Dr Browns, Middlesbrough before the away game in December 2017.

Yes it was Paranoid. I’d have preferred War Pigs personally but it may not have fitted the occasion.

That was my take on it too. I didn't know about Grealish's comments - nor the Stoke half time rendition (which seems like a different universe now)
-
has been song by Northern Ireland fans for almost 20 years at games
-

Now if you changed the words from Sweet Caroline to, Big Tyrone Mings, It'd be even better
-
The first thing I do when I get a new phone is change the default ringtone to "Theme From an Unmade Silent Movie".

That gets my vote. Brilliant intro.

whenever i hear it i cant help but think back and remember the old Trinity Road Stand and massive Holte End as was,
i was normally in one or the other when the teams came out in the 70/80s
lets face it its not a great tune but its our tune,
i would think most fans that can remember that far back love it

I love it. I'll always associate it with listening to Tony Butler on BRMB on European nights, but in particular when we played Kiev away - it was in the afternoon UK time , I was listening to it at school with the old earpiece up the arm of your blazer trick.
Villa were "under the cosh" as used to be said then, and Butler went through the whole "Get your prayer mats out, on your knees, Hail Saunders of the Villa!", then played Unmade Silent Movie (I just called it the "Villa tune" then).
Played it all the way through on my phone 3 times before leaving for Wembley. Definitely why we won !!

It definitely brings back memories for me but I think of it as of its time. It isn't a rousing song and it isn't a singalong tune either, so for me it's ok during the warm up well before kick off but definitely not when the teams come out.
I never noticed Black Sabbath on Monday - was that whilst the players were still celebrating pre-receiving the trophy?
On a general point, I would be much happier if they left us to just sing our own songs rather than having a playlist after the final whistle. A rousing rendition of Allez Allez Allez would have been wonderful with the euphoria of victory.

Never knew it was called that. My memories are like yours of Villa in the 70’s and listening to Tony Butler on the radio. Happy, carefree days

Yep I remember listening to that as a 17 yr old back from the pub. I got pie eyed on 3 pints in those days so not sure I managed to listen to it all

Yes, I was listening. My family thought I was mad.

But whats the reason behind it?
There wasn't really a reason - Things weren't so choreographed in the 70s.
-
It’s just an odd, obscure, tune to pick, no lyrics, no obvious link, very random.
-

I guess that someone was in charge of the playlist at VP back then and (s)he chose to play that song at the same time every game. Entrance music was unheard of back then as well.

Certainly does when Jack and the boys are singing, having a party with the fans on the day we are promoted
-
Much as I don't like to sing about "them", I now find it completely impossible not to sing FTB after the Sweet Caroline part.
I'm sure Mr Diamond wouldn't be happy!!
-
It's on a par awful wise with Don't Look Back In Anger. No idea what either have to do with our club
-

Our supporters sing them, therefore they're a part of our club . I don't suppose Rogers & Hammerstein spent a lot of time on the Kop.
-
I even joined in with DLBIA on Monday.
Fuck it, I can't be arsed to moan about anything at the minute. I'm staying off the Brexit thread, obviously.
-
I love ‘Sweet Caroline’ and it’s obvious the team, squad, club, do, too.
It’s on the party videos so that’s good enough for me.
So good, so good, so good...
-
These songs strike a chord with fans, hence their appeal. DLBIA obviously takes us back to Reading and the sheer elation we felt at finally breaking the duck, then I’m sure many like me see Sweet Caroline as a bit of a turning point, half time away at Stoke. They always will, so I’ll happily sing them.

Exactly. If you don't know what DLBIA has to with us, ask anyone who was at Reading away that night. I hear lots of people moaning about it, yet everyone sings it after games.
-
Nothing wrong with these songs. The majority of the fans join in and seem to enjoy singing them, what's wrong with that?
-
When away on holiday especially Benidorm, always slagging the wife because I hated it, but absolutely love it now

Gary aka Brazilian Villan made the same point at the Black Lion in Kilburn after the game.
Harry Lauder didn’t own a chip shop in Small Heath either.
-
Is the Oasis song still played at the final whistle for home games? That certainly was started by fans joining in at an away game.
SC seems to be the new victory anthem in football last 12 months. It's a cracking tune but always amusing how these songs that have been around for ages suddenly become all the rage, I assume it first got played at the Darts and developed from there.
-
I may be misremembering, but DLBIA didn't seem to be sung with much gusto on Monday. Possibly because it was played a while after the final whistle instead of immediately afterwards, or maybe that it takes longer to get going than say, Sweet Caroline. Or hopefully because people have started to realise that it's shit! :)
-
DLBIA can now be consigned to history as it’s all about not letting the recent utterly shit past affect our future. Sack it off.
-
This reminds me of the 1998 French squad who would sing 'I will Survive' after every win.

This reminds me of the 1998 French squad who would sing 'I will Survive' after every win.
They played it before the France v England friendly game at Stade de France and it was so joyous even some of the miserable England supporters joined in.
If you worry about the context of the lyrics, the origin or who recorded the song or which team's supporters sang it first then you're missing the point.

That's the way! I was dancing around the living room singing along to Paranoid. Love Black Sabbath, love Paranoid. Absolute tune! My rendition was appalling, mind.

It's like Hi Ho Silver Fucking Lining ...
Surely to God someone with some talent could come up with some words to go with the tune ? if we have to have Sweet Caroline can't someone Villafy it a bit ? same with the Oasis one

As long as it isn’t with players names, let’s not let it date.
-
Same here.
Also did the earpiece up the blazer trick at school speech day... can't remember which game - caused a bit of a commotion when Villa scored.
-
I also enjoyed the Conor Hurrihane song!
-
And "Our Hause".
-
Those at Reading away in October 2016 will recall the Swret Caroline was played before DLBIA came on and had a smattering singing to it then.

Doh. Only just got this.

I'll miss Tuanzebe.

Sick of hearing Sweet Caroline

I bloody love it.

It is great watching our squad sing this, but how did it come about being associated with us? Or have I been living under a rock just lately and it is common knowledge?
Where it began? I can't begin to knowing.
-
This has been a niggling "ear worm" since Monday
On top of that "Allez allez allez" and "Super John McGinn" are still echoing in my head
I watched the game in The Arch at Wembley and the " Super John McGinn " song was sung continuously - the atmosphere was incredible
-
Always loved it, love it even more now!

Brilliant nor me ---great to see such team spirit---fully well earned and deserved ongoing celebrations.

Well that’s the Directors Cut extended version, that’s the longest clip of that I’ve seen so far.
And it’s why I think as a song it’ll always mean so much to us.
Just look at what has happened as a result of a decent manager being backed, one penalty shootout win over the very quiet neighbours, one decent job done in the big smoke.
It could have meant selling the crown jewels and longer in the wilderness. Instead we are back where we belong.
Loving the anticipation of the new season.
None of that needed saying. Isn’t it great to savour!
Up the Villa!
Come on you Lions!
-
If we're as successful as we hope to be, that was the last time those boys were one(s) of us.
What, do I like the Smiths? Yes, I do. Why do you ask?
-
Neil Diamond is not enjoying the best of health at the moment, so I hope somebody has let him know how much we love Sweet Caroline.
Inspirational? Absolutely, going by films of the team singing along, on YouTube.

I’m not going to stop saying how big a result was in our history. To keep a player whose class, quality, rare grace we’d struggle to attract, to build a team around him, and he’s one of us, will always always give that extra (glances suspiciously at Agbonlahor, G in the rear view mirror).
It’s a result almost important enough to name your child after ;)

Isn't it time we ditched TLBIA (which was always a bit self-deprecating in my view)? "Sweet Caroline" will always have a deeply positive resonance in the mind of every Villa fan, as we recall that brilliant day at Wembley, our return to the top table and the unity of fans and players at that hotel afterwards. Let's belt it out at every home game.

Design, fluke or just a consequence of a winning team, but my favourite part is that that the squad looks united. There’s obviously Jack and Grealish front and centre but there’s also the loan players and the unselect/injured joining in.
Get it on the big screen after our first victory at villa park.

I think it is more than possible to have more than one song

How is little Caroline doing?! ;)

Compare and contrast with the Bad Santa video.

Ha! Exactly my thoughts!

Fantastic video's. Great togetherness. I wince every time I see James Chester smash the trophy into Jack's eyebrow!

Lil’ Miss AV (no names beginning with a C ;) has looked grand in her 2018/2019 baby grow, I’m pleased to report its one of the better designed ones for all those nappy changes. Her mother has started to learn ‘We’ve got McGinn’ as it’s been sung quite a lot, looking forward to a few new ditties to continue the gentlest educative upbringing.

I was at the Emirates on Sunday and if there's one thing that disappointed me as much as losing the match the way we did, it's the fact that they were singing Sweet Caroline at the the end!!
Is every fucker singing this song when they win a match now????

Be nice to find out!
-
I don't care if other clubs sing it - football is full of clubs singing the same songs / adjusting lyrics to suit.
Sweet Caroline, to me (at 43), is a reminder of probably my fondest day yet as a Villan, for many reasons.
-
That is how I associate it too.
-
I was there and it seemed that few fans joined in. Certainly didn’t resemble a raucous victory celebration

I went to a match there in the 17/18 season (Mother supports them) and they played SC at end of that game so been playing it longer to celebrate victories than we have.

In fairness, they've been experiencing victories longer than we have.

I left as soon as they were awarded the free kick. I only go a handful of times per season but I've seen that movie a thousand times. I reached the line of police with the sound of the suddenly-animated stadium behind me. One of their horses seemed to look sympathetically at me - and it wasn't one from the Shires, weirdly.
-
After The Faroese Cup Final last weekend, after HB won it, we all started singing Sweet Caroline - I think it has been sung at the club for quite a while after wins.

Thats embarrassing.

It's better than don't look back in anger.

Some people have far too much time on their hands.
-
I'm sure Lenny Henry did a version of this gently slagging off Villa about thirty years ago. I loved it as I was obsessed with all things Michael Jackson at the time.
-
This one?
-
I remember watching that as a kid, though I don't remember him slagging us off, I was just chuffed that our name was mentioned outside of a football programme.

What bout a more diverse song:
Which part me from B6 man,
True dappa Don,

Dagger Dagger, nah pum pum stabber, me nah batty rider, dat de zulu,

What the actual fuck!! Something smells funny, either that or I am older than I think.

I THINK it is the same poster who went on and on and on and on and on about standing from a few months back.

Love the zombie David Bellamy; ‘gwapple me gwapenuts’ , straight from Tiswas!

Pretty offensive if somebody in your family is anorexic.
