Whelan and Taylor were really good. El Ghazi my man of the match.

Don't like Bristol City at all. Horrible, niggly, overly physical twats.

Well done Villa!

Excellent.

Could've scored 5-6 without Jack and this against a team in form and likely to be in the play offs.

Need Mings back as back 4 was dodgy. Da Silva looks a very good left back in the making. Wouldn't mind him next season.

El Ghazi MOTM for us just ahead of the usual McGinn all star show.

Fantastic win, we could have had a shit load of goals today shame the Brizzle keeper had a blinder. And that was without Jack and Tyrone.

El Ghazi MOTM by a mile, he should have had 5 assists today.

McGinn worked well, Whelan also. Davis looked good coming on. Tuanzebe was not really fit - you could see that he couldn’t clear a ball at the end, and just managed to poke it to a teammate.

Unnecessary nervy

Their keeper was lucky in that almost everything we did was straight at him. Poor finishing from us rather than a great game from him. Speaking of keeps, did Jed Steer actually make a save today?

Brilliant second half performance. Whelan unbelievable, how many times did he win the ball back before relieving pressure with the right short pass? El Ghazi was terrific too, thought Davis was excellent, held the ball up with the strength of two Heskeys, while Jedi and Axel imperious at the back. Everybody did well in the second. Thought Bristol were very good too and caused us problems with their pressing and imposing physical presence. 2-1 a fair score for me.

Only other concern today was McGinn picking up another booking...13 now so can only pick up one more (he must be rested as soon as he hits 14).

Thanks to whoever provided the small river.  The commentator was about as one-eyed as it gets, the officials were giving everything to Villa and Bristol were hard done by yadda yadda yadda.  Sad twat.  I thought we saw the game out quite professionally again.  Need to stop hitting shots straight at the keeper and we'll be a lot more comfortable.  I reckon a win at Bolton will see the play-offs pretty much secured.

The fact we’re disagreeing over MOTM shows what a great team performance that was.

Taylor excellent for me.  McGinn superb in the last 10 minutes, especially when he held it in the corner and wriggled away to get his shot away.

Today's performance showed how good Smith is as a coach.

Axel is not long back from injury and Jedi has only been a bit player this season, but they were quite pretty steady today.

Ditto in midfield with Whelan, Hourihane and SJM. They all seem to understand today's system/formation, even though they must have had different roles today compared to midweek given that it was a different set up as a result of Grealish's absence.

Despite Tyrone and Jack being absent we were able to hold Bristol to 1 shot on target over 98 minutest and put together another  winning performance.

Would that have been possible earlier in the season in similar circumstances under Smith's predecessor?

25 shots
11 on target

We dominated them and never looked liked dropping any points. Did Steer even have to make a save of note, unlike their keeper?

Brilliant 2nd half performance with really good performances all round.

Well done the lads!👌

8 out of 8 is clear evidence that we are simply far superior to anybody in this league and shouldn't be here.
However, in any one off game even the invincible unbeatable Villa can always finish up drawing a game and then being beaten on penalties.
For that reason we should really be excused the lottery of the play offs and be given automatic promotion and in effect re-election to the premier league with immediate effect.

Always impressed by Davis’ ability to hold the ball up and find a pass to a teammate. Seen a lot of forwards with more experience struggle with similar link up play. Makes it very easy for the midfield to then run on.

Let’s not underestimate that performance. We fucking battered them. Their keeper has made god knows how many saves, including some top class ones. Loads of Shots on target and shots wide, plus alberts missed open goal. In the meantime, steer could had had a picnic.
Yes, Brizzle are a good team, and knocked the ball around well, but we dealt with everything.
Not one player let us down today.
The full backs were excellent. Axel and Jedi were superb, especially when you consider how little football they have played recently.
Whelan was majestic, El Ghazi had his best game since joining.
Tammy worked his bollocks off.

And McGinn is just a footballing god. His game management, intelligence and energy are just top, top, top class.

Well done me babbies.

Did Hourihane have a free role today in Jack's absence ? Keeper made two outrageous saves from him, missed a sitter, fouled for penalty and scored the winner (hardest chance of the lost). Hard to leave him out, serious goal threat at this level.

Davis looks a real handful.

When I heard the line-up - no Jack, no Mings (obvs) but no Hause/Elphick/Chester either, so Jedi at CB - I said I'd be happy with a point. In the end we could and should have won by 4 or 5 but a combination of profligate finishing and their goalie having a stormer meant that them getting one back made the last 10 minutes a bit twitchy. To a man they put a hell of a shift in and no surprise some were dead on their feet at the end. Great game, great atmosphere, three more points. Onwards and upwards.

Funniest thing of the afternoon - some guy actually landed on the 'Prize Where it Lies' half time fun - sadly he landed on SIS so won a year's worth of protein.

I can only give SJM a 10 for today as there were only three of him on the pitch.
El Ghazi was a revelation and the transformation in Taylor and Whelan  shows what a good manager can do.

Horrible little club managed by a little whizzel. Good keeper though. And that was just them.

Us proved we can play without Grealish   What tablets has Smith put Taylor and whelan on? Can I have a prescription

Before the game I was hoping Kodjia would've been playing instead of El Ghazi, but he put in an excellent second half display.

McGinn was outstanding again which is all the more creditable given he got booked early on and Bristol were a physical team without much finesse on that display. Their management team don't appear to have much of that either.

I would pick out Taylor as well. He's improved leaps and bounds recently and is playing easily the best I've seen him, Elmo at right back too.

Bristol City have some proper morons following then

Looking on their forum, it was even stevens and they were only beaten because the referee was practically playing for us.

Weren't they similarly full of shit before this fixture last year as well?

SJM has a great football brain as well. Right at the end we had it down in the corner, he burst through along the bye-line, then instead of laying it off, he did a u-turn and took it back to the corner. Great game management. Oh, and by the way, where did they get 6 minutes ET in the second half?!

Cracking game and absolutely battered them. A few had good games but I thought that was the best I’ve seen Taylor play. Defended well and drove forward linking well with El ghazi who was probably  my man of the match.
Bristol fans were giving Taylor loads and after the whistle blew he walked back and applauded them 😂.

Can't tell from the highlights if Tammys disallowed goal for offside or handball when he controlled the long ball? Not a criticism but said it after the Blackburn that we still need to be more clinical in front of goal and put teams to the sword...should have been 4 or 5 given the chances we missed today.

What a brilliant performance 2nd half, tempered with a few brainless spells, we by and large dominated 2nd half and could have had 5 or 6.

Negatives

The goal we gave away was poor. Attacking, Taylor and El Ghazi were excellent, but that small passage where we didn't clear the ball that lead to the goal was brainless.

I felt Tammy struggled to hold the ball up.

We had a few sloppy bits of play, mainly first half where we were too loose in our defending, giving them time to cross.

We were beyond wasteful in front of goal.

Positives

We dominated 2nd half. We upped the tempo and murdered them down the left.

El Ghazi cut in and ran them ragged, Taylor cause problems on the outside.

Hourihane was always popping in the box and could have had a hat full.

We did it without Jack and Mings. Psychologically that's huge. The belief in this squad is self evident as the quality. Hand in hand, that's a potent combination.

A massive 6 pointer won, absolutely brilliant. Fair play to their keeper  he stopped it being embarrassing. Lee Johnsom is such a gimp. Moan about the officials when you have one attempt on goal. Off you pop.

Max loved it again. 100% record, so when you combine it with him not having a season ticket for next year, we'll surely win the title with the luck he brings.

I genuinely think this is one of the most balanced football forums on the internet.  Most of us will normally pretty accurately tell it like it is.  I thought the Weimann goal wasn't offside today as an example, so we were lucky there, but overall on the balance of play and chances created we more than deserved to win.

Great result and performance. 8 out of 8 is fantastic! Equalling the record is on. Their goalie had a blinder and they were lucky to get away without another 5 goal mauling. Everybody played well. It was good seeing Tammy dispatch his penalty. It was also good seeing his replacement, Davis play with power, hold the ball up well and create chances from nothing. Onto Bolton next and hopefully 9 out of 9. UTV!

I was fully expecting those pathetically-inadequate, bitter, no-marks would be spitting (motley) feathers after their latest loss at VP: but I was pleasantly surprised by their outstanding humility & appreciation of losing to the vastly superior club (again). I've not had the pleasure of hearing 'cuddly' Lee Johnson's post-match summation, but I've absolutely no doubt he'll have been his usual magnanimous self; and a great credit to the proud club that continues to give it the big 'un to their skint L1 Brizzle rivals.

Excellent day at the game today; I thought it'd be a close one and the score makes it look that way but we could've put away five or six today especially in the second half.

I thought the first half was quite even- they had some good chances and the marginal offside- it looked very close but I was sitting right behind the linesman and he didn't hesitate to raise the flag. Adomah's had better days although he picked up a bit in the second half.

I thought Tammy was well offside for his disallowed goal but the only replay I've seen is inconclusive. I thought he struggled to hold the play up at times; his first touch let him down and putting Davis on was a good call for me.

Credit to the defence for restricting Bristol to the few chances they got. They all put in a shift today.

McGinn was excellent- he bossed the last few minutes after their goal and his decision-making in the final third to close out the game was first class.

Whelan was MOTM for me for some excellent passing and for repeatedly winning back possession in the midfield. What an improvement from him in this run!

Hopefully we can extend it to nine games against Bolton and ten against Millwall...

Albert was the only disappointment today.
I thought the cross leading up to thier goal should have been dealt with by Steer but I did not have a good angle to see it.
Is there a highlight of the penalty.

All those desperate challenges and head injuries were because he isn’t actually a very good defender. Came on late but did not very much. Well received by the crowd though.

It was certainly a Holte End penalty.

10k + roar and the ref is convinced he's missed an obvious foul so gives it. All crowds with big home ends get a couple a season.

Doubt we'd have been given it at the North Stand.

To be fair he has a point about the positioning of the away fans. I think it was Mo’N that insisted on them being moved to the side all those years ago and I think we benefit from it on the whole.  He’s only saying that is advantageous and has spotted something for his own ground.

Whelan, El Ghazi, SJM step up and take a bow. Got to London Euston and found it was full of celebrating Villa fans. So I joined in. Rude not to.

First half despite missing us two great chances, I thought we lacked tempo and structure. I thought they were the better team 1st half.

2nd half for large parts we were very very good. Created lots of chances and should have made the end of the game easier for ourselves. SJM his usual brilliant self and El Ghazi had their right back on toast.

Id echo the points about the commentator on the Bristol City biased stream. He was horrificly oneeyed. The coverage in general was shit. Lost count of the times they cut away from live play to show a replay.

Got to give a shoutout to Neil Taylor, who I thought was excellent today, both going forward & defensively. Linked well with El Ghazi, who looked dangerous throughout. Should have won by more & more wins will do it.

Good to hear .
I mean I seen from highlights he smashed ball against opposition player and then didn't prevent cross coming in from his side but perhaps his whole game was a lot better.
Seeing him v Rotherham midweek early on was awful falling on ball.
I would say he's still a concern for me especially on his defending and the part he played in the goal being conceded.
That said hear what you're saying so it's good there is part of play that's being recognized and certainly been more solid overall in this winning run!

Sorry mate, Neil Taylor had an excellent game today in defence and attack, just like his previous three matches, definitely a confidence player who is performing to his potential

Thanks for the link yesterday as it was good to see most of the game (bias Bristol City commentator aside).
A special mention to our makeshift defence today as in general we looked pretty solid.
Whelan was outstanding today, his screening of our defence and passing a joy.
El Ghazi made a mug out of their right back and this was his best game since Smethick away IMHO.
Davis very impressive in his cameo.
We were lucky and unlucky in equal measure so overall deserved the win.
And yes we CAN win without Jack if we have to.
On to Easter now and hopefully confirmation of our play off spot.

From Thursday morning’s hangover to now Sunday’s. Thank you Villa.

Couldn’t find out till Tuesday that I could get Saturday off and all the Bristol tickets have all gone - fucked off wasn’t the word. Dragged around the bull ring in between taking phone out every 2 mins hitting refresh.

BBC website failed. Thank goodness for this forum for the updates.

From the highlights chance after chance went begging and my heart sank when I saw Jack wasn’t playing - I’m a kid again! Next thing I’ll be getting a football sticker album out.

The magnitude of this win cannot be understated.

A sellout crowd contributed to the win. Dean Smith and his coaches all carry on to astound - we’ve had some shite back room staff and all this positivity and logic is like witchcraft.

Players one and all gave their all, kept their heads and belief and saw out the win. We won a game without Jack - one of the (appeared to be) toughest games of the season.

I’m so happy like the rest of you. 8 on the spin, Trotters next after that fucking snow game last time there - someone needs a pasting to improve our goal difference but also to remind the rest of the division they got off lightly and those to come should fear.

I think we will displace the baggies in 4th and play them in the semis with the blades in the final.

Onwards!

They will have been convinced when they saw Jack, Tyrone and others were not on our team sheet that the points were there for the taking. That's what's p-ssing them off! They should be looking nervously over their shoulders at boro or derby because on the basis of what I saw yesterday, they lack discipline on and off the pitch and they could well implode. The game was far more comfortable than the score suggested, their keeper had a blinder and that combined but with some pretty ropey finishing meant we didn’t run up the cricket score we should have.

Thought it was an iffy penalty decision but they created the square root of fuck all, ElGhazi really stepped up in the absence of Jack and some good performances from the lesser lights.

Taylor shading MOM from Whelan, El Ghazi and Elmo.

Arguably the best of the eight wins, with Mings and Grealish missing and against our nearest rival in the table.

El Ghazi was unplayable at times. On his day he is far too good for this league but let's be honest, if he wasn't inconsistent then he wouldn't be slumming it in the Championship.

The improvement in and how Smith has got the likes of Whelan and Taylor playing is remarkable. Shows what good coaching can do and it helps that we play on the front foot and limits the amount of defending Taylor has to do.

Bristol City fans definitely mirror their manager. He's an odious little prick with little man syndrome and is always very salty. Their fans on Twitter and their forum are the saltiest I've seen this season aswell.
I thought the atmosphere was decent in parts and loud at times yet according to them VP was a library, one of the quietest sell out crowds they've ever seen and the quietest set of home fans they've seen this season. Now either they're telling porkies or the acoustics at VP are terrible. I barely heard their fans and thought they seemed very subdued for an away support.

11 shots on target to their 1... obviously unlucky and you don't get 3 for 1 "goal" you rugby following muppets...

As for the atmosphere - it wasn't great, hardly intimidating and for large parts of the game it was subduded. The best recently at VP was the last few minutes v Boro in the playoff semi, it was a loud as I've ever heard the ground.

The best angle for viewing if it was a penalty would have been straight down the pitch and plenty from the Holte End are saying nailed on so I would go with that.  For the offside, it looked to me that Weimann was half a yard offside when the ball was played in but, again the camera angle was not the best.

When I’ve come across Bristol City fans on my travels I have found them in the main to be fine, just harmless bumpkins with a strange inferiority complex toward, of all people, Cardiff. Maybe bringing more than a few hundred slack jawed, straw chewing simpletons on an away trip has given them delusions of grandeur?

I’d imagine that if we were looking for opinions on what a 40k+ crowd should sound like, they wouldn’t be near the top of the list.

Yes however two things will stop most lower tier clubs from doing that. Size of the ground and need to maximise revenue. Also in PL most grounds tend to hide away fans and bigger the ground further away the opposition fans are. Look at OT and Sports Direct stadiums. At Villa PArk I would move them from the lower DE and just confine them to upper section.

Best Bristol player yesterday was imo Jay Da Silva, their LB. He hit in two brilliant crosses for the Taylor free header and Weimann offside.

Wouldn't mind him here next season, thought DS had signed him for Brentford but that's another Da Silva.

As for the game, a fantastic win in the circumstances. Without two key players and playing a very in form rival, we need this type of win to give confidence in the play offs and also show we can win without Jack.

Thought first half was pretty tight. We had a few long range shots but in general play I thought Bristol moved it around quicker. The Weimann offside was very marginal, not sure that was off at all although impossible to tell really when you just have one camera angle to go off.

Second half we were much better and could easily have scored 5.

No atmosphere, shithole ground, shithole city and arrogant fans.

Hysterical.

What a horrible club we are though.

Fancy having our own fans at both ends of our own ground.

It isn't fair. Clearly the Bristol City fans would have made an incredible noise if they'd been 90 degrees further around.

Wasn't it MON who when he first took over originally pushed for us to have our fans at both ends of the ground and the away fans stuck in the corner of 'The Doug'?

I think if we had lost at Rotherham after the pen/sending off, we’d have murdered Bristol yesterday...

Think our players, as well as us fans, were all a bit nervous about the fact that the run has to end sometime.

Is it just me or does it look like Weimann momentarily apologises to the Holte End for scoring before realising his goal has been disallowed for offside?

yes,
although I don’t think he was apologising just not wanting to celebrate like what they do nowadays

The penalty is well dodgy.  If there is a handball it's by Hourihane.  I'd be well pissed off it that had been given against us.  Still looks like we well deserved the win though on the balance of play and chances.

Looked very soft, then again we got done by a last minute handball goal v West Brom earlier in the season. (Cliche alert) these things tend to even out over a season.

Sorry if already answered, but does anyone know why Kodjia was missing?
Got rib injury from Wednesday night

Thank you.
Since I posted the original question, I've found footage of how he got the injury.
For those that don't know, he injured his rib throwing his shirt into the crowd on Wednesday night.

Weimann had strayed offside at the start of that move and was on the ground. Despite getting up and coming away from goal, he never got himself back onside at any time.

That how I see it anyway.

Well, that much more tense than it should have been.  If not for their keeper we'd have been out of sight.

Their keeper was lucky in that almost everything we did was straight at him. Poor finishing from us rather than a great game from him. Speaking of keeps, did Jed Steer actually make a save today?
According to BBC they only had one shot on target so he didn’t need to 👍

Living in Liverpool as i do,i have to admit it is a great place to live and most of the people are very friendly and helpful. It is the football teams ,mainly the reds ,who are the problem .So full of themselves and so biased. I think there is some suggestion that English as spoken in Gornal is reminiscent of Elizabethan English (in both cases English is in parentheses). Obviously, Gornal is not actually in Birmingham but most people hilariously imitating a Birmingham accent are actually closer to Black Country anyway.

They had that king of ready-made excuses lined up, "they're a one-man team, take Grealish out of it and they're shit, without him we'd have battered them". And then he was out, and we weren't, and the gods smiled on them when a combination of the best goalkeeping display I've seen in a long while and some wasteful finishing kept the scoreline respectable.

It's proper messed with their heads, that, I reckon.

You have to realise that these fans support a tin pot club and this was one of the biggest matches of their lives. I wouldn't be surprised if they made a DVD of their one goal and started selling it in their club shop next week. They will go on talking about this match till next time they meet us which hopefully is not going to happen very soon.   If their team has any balls may be they can meet us in the final and have another go.
