Title: Aston Villa vs Bristol City: Pre-match Thread
Post by: Chipsticks on April 11, 2019, 06:13:15 PM
Huge game in our season; feels somewhat like a make-shift playoff quarter final.

Luckily - due to all of the recent results across the board - dropping points wouldn't be quite as disastrous as it seemed it might be a few weeks ago.

Hause seems 50/50, do we go with Mile and Tuanzebe at CB? Does Smith change the system to 2 up-front with Kodjia and Tammy?

I think we'll win.

With Mings out can see us conceding but I just have faith that we will score more. Abraham to make amends for his penalty miss- 4-2 to us.

Hope Hause is fit because I’d worry about Jedinak against a very mobile team.

Kodjia for El Ghazi and Albert to keep his place over Green.
The biggest conundrum is Whelan or Hourihane. I’d go for Whelan now he’s had a rest.

The rest pick themselves.

Home win (but a draw wouldn’t be the end of he world).

I'd quite like to see:

              Steer

Elmo Axel Jedi Taylor

            Whelan

SJM      Jack     Hourihane

         Tammy Kodj

Subs - goalie any fit defender Henri Uncle Green El G Kienan

2 1 to us

Aston Villa 3-1 Bristol City. I've voted a Villa win 7 times in a row - this is number 8!

Smith said, probably a little tongue in cheek, that Kodjia's performance on Wednesday might make him have to rethink his formation. But I don't think he'll do it.

Wednesday, his hands were tied if he wanted something out of the game, the midfield only had to play with that intensity for 45 minutes, not 90, and probably most telling was the fullbacks playing up to Smith's ideals, but again they only had to do it for one half.

These are a different proposition to Rotherham, I'll be surprised if we don't revert back. Maybe Kodjia getting a nod, and Hause coming back in would be more than helpful.

Steer

Elmo
Tuanzebe
Hause
Taylor

Whelan

McGinn
Grealish

Adomah
Abraham
Kodjia

3-1 us, could be anyone, Weimann for them.

I'd consider replacing Tammy with Kodjia:
Steer
Elmo  Hause   Axel   Taylor
Adomah   Whelan   Grealish   McGinn   El Ghazi
Kodjia

Keep the same system, that's essential.

I wouldn’t mind a change of system especially as our correct formation relies on Green and/or El Ghazi who are both hot and cold. With Kodjia in form I wouldn’t be averse to him and Tammy as a proper front 2.

We have been on the wobble in recent games, and still managed to get results. At some point, we will get back on track again, I have no doubt about that. If it happens on Saturday, so much the better.

Either way, I predict a win.

Depends how Dean patches up the defence with Mings suspended. I'd be more confident of a win if Hause is fit than with Jedi (although I'm sure he will bust a gut for the team). Kodjia has given Dean a selection headache up front, but I think he'll stick with the system and use Kodjia on the wing...I can't see him changing a winning formula and switching to 442 at this stage.

Know very little about Bristol City, but I think this could be tougher than the SW and Rotherham games. They seem a side difficult to beat.

I’ll go 2-1.

Whoever said they would like to see Jedinak start at centre back.....no,no,no!

He did alright Wednesday dealing with the long balls and huge throw ins Rotherham bombarded us with but Bristol City will be a different threat altogether.

Im in the very back row of the Doug Ellis stand with a restrictive view for this one, does anyone know just how restrictive it is.....like seriously not enjoyable restrictive or just having to move about if the balls in a certain area of the pitch?

Bristol were absolutely gone on the hour mark against the Stripey Filth and despite their extra days rest, they've played 5 games in the same time we've played 4.

They played 4222 against the Albion which is a system that takes it out of you, despite the long ball back to front.

If we can get that early goal, then I'd hope to see us dominate possession. Grealish and McGinn are good enough to beat their press.

I wouldn't change our system from 433, as whether they revert to their normal style or stick to 4222, part of our game is quick ball transitioned wide.

For me;

Steer

Taylor
Hause
Tuanzebe
Elmo

Hourihane

McGinn
Grealish

Kodjia
Tammy
El Ghazi

Think it will be tight, but I'll go 2-1 to us.

I think that the spirit and togetherness in the squad is worth a goal head start.

Now spirit and togetherness doesn't win games but I really believe that we are on a roll and and whilst we are not unplayable we a side that never gives in. They won't be relishing playing us at Villa Park and I can't see anything but a Villa win. It will be tough but I've seen enough over the last few weeks to suggest that we are on our way back.

I don't agree with the people suggesting a draw would be a good result. We are at the stage of the season where we need wins, especially so if we are at home. 2-1 to Villa. Bristol are a good team but home advantage should tip the balance in our favour.

only because of who we are playing - a draw means they have no advantage over us and vice versa, with another game chalked off. I want us to win, obviously, but I don't think a draw would be a negative after the win on Wednesday.

Whelan in for Hourihane and then a replacement for Mings would be the only changes I would look at.  If Hause is fit then it's a no brainer, but I thought Jedinak did well when he came on in the week.  He concerns me at centre half though as he is prone to having days where everything goes wrong and we just can't afford that at the moment.

We weren't chasing the ball Wednesday and absolutely managed the life out the game second half, so I'm not convinced we'll be too tired.

Bristol though visibly went after an hour on Tuesday and wilted at Villa Park with 5 games in 14 days. 4222 is an energy sapping system and one I think we'd counter comfortably as Grelaish and McGinn slip the press time and time again as dual 8s.

Bring it on and their Pardew shit eating grin manager.

They would still have their advantage of a game in hand (vs Millwall on 30th April) so a win would negate that, and the sooner we get the points on the board to secure our playoff spot the better.

I'd like to see some stats on the supposed curse. You would expect it to be bollocks but then recent experience in relation to villa is that it a thing.

I guess it would make sense if there was some reversion to mean effect, with managers coming off unbeaten runs that have to end sometime, or soft fixtures.

Looking forward to tomorrow. Brizzle are capable of turning us over but if we hit the heights we did against Derby we will take some stopping. Hoping for a banging atmosphere but nerves could play a part. Im letting my heart rule my head and going for a 3-1 win to the pride of Brum.

Here's one I made earlier...

MOTM 18/19 winners, and their subsequent game
August, Bielsa (Leeds), Millwall (a), drew
September, Moore (WBA), Reading (h), won
October, McClaren (QPR), Brentford (h), won
November, Farke (Norwich), Bolton (h), won
December, Adkins (Hull City), Sheffield Wednesday (h), won
January, Mowbray (Blackburn Rovers), Bristol City (h), lost
February, Wilder (Sheffield United), Rotherham (h), won

Cheers, solid research. Crikey... McClaren MOM shows 6 months is 100 years in football.

Remember when we played the dogheads last season ? The best team in the division.
We ripped them a new one.
This team is more than capable of doing the same to Bristol fecking city.

Yes don't think this is ideal game to try Jedinak at CB from the start. They have Weimann in good form upfront so think they'd be too much pace and movement with the others they have for him to feel comfortable.

Seems Chester is training again so we might see him back.

Will go for 2-2 and then beat Bolton and Milwall to all but secure top 6.

I won't shit myself that the best an in form Villa can manage against a BCFC team at a sell out Villa Park is a draw.

BCFC can only manage to sell 2,600 tickets.

I guess that's better than the other (second rate*) BCFC.

*And i'm ignoring Bradford. No mercy! FTF!

2-0

Football is a funny game and strange results can occur. Also after winning 7  probability is that we will not carry on winning but fuck me we are playing an ok second tier team not Brazil. If we don't win it will be down to some lethargy/complacency in our team and not because Bristol City are good.

It's something like 2796 is the max allocation we give in the league, so as i've seen Bristol City saying they sold out maybe we, or the police, cut it slightly.

It's an interesting point, when you consider the catchment areas of Bristol, Bradford and Birmingham, that none of the BCFC's have acheived anything significant.

Basically Crap Football Clubs.

I feel today could be about strikers playing against their former clubs. Tammy needs to ensure he takes the chances that may come his way, but I feel Kodjia could be the more dangerous striker on the day, so I would definitely start him alongside Tammy. Getting to 7 wins on the bounce was always going to hit a bump in the road and I feel Rotherham was that bump. I think we can now go onto at least equal if not beat our record of consequetive wins, starting with Bristol today. So come on Villa make it 8 out of 8 please! UTV!

Still think the weakest area of our team now is the wingers. They all have days when they play well and others where they don't. Half wondering if we could play Kodjia on the wing. He is poor at crossing, but can cut in and shoot and has the added incentive of playing a former club.

It'll be interesting to see if he sticks with Kodjia after the way he played on Wednesday. I just hope the game the other night didn't take too much out of us. A win would be superb but even if we do lose, we've done well to get ourselves back up there. I'll go for a 3-1 win though.

Enjoy, we'll miss 'em next season.

I'm on the bus to Euston to get the train to Brum, first VP game since we mauled the wulves last season. Hope it's more like that and less like my last Villa game, at Brentford.

I thought it was the two up front  that worked rather than individuals however Kodjia got himself involved. When a team has been on a good rum by playing in a particular way other teams watch and divise methods to stop them so it's good that we can change the mix  and should do just to knock opposition off their game.

2-1 Villa really important game, win this and we put 4 clear points between us and Bristol City, it's in our hands now, after this, Bolton then Millwall, good result today, follow that up with good results against Bolton and Millwall ( very possible) and we're home and dry, serious rumours around that the massively rich owners of PSG are interested in Villa in a takeover, this could be the start of a born again sleeping giant coming back to life and so it should be, this would be the ideal club for owners like PSG to put us where we belong.

Read that the other night, not really sure I'd want us to be a Qatari plaything to be honest.  Would much rather see what Sawiris and Edens can do when we get promoted, they're not exactly skint.

Illness would.seem an extremely strange reason for Jack to miss a match of this magnitude (unless the illness is so severe that he won't be able to stop himself consequently defecating on the pitch). Nothing mentioned on any media site and nothing in Smiths press conference, so although not impossible he's out, it would be a huge surprise.
