Steve Bruce and Aston Villa meet on Saturday for the first time since he was sacked – and fans are calling on their former boss to be given a good reception.
Bruce was dismissed from Villa Park in October after a poor run of form brought a two-year spell in charge to an end.
After leading the club to the Championship play-off final last May, Villa won just once in Bruce’s final nine games in charge, with a 3-3 draw against Preston North End proving to be the final straw.
He was appointed by Sheffield Wednesday in January, taking up the manager’s job the following month after taking some time out to recuperate following a difficult year.
Bruce had two operations after leaving Villa and also had to deal with the loss of both of his parents.
And the time out has clearly worked with the 58-year-old having enjoyed a brilliant start to his reign at Hillsborough.
The Owls are undefeated in the 11 games under his stewardship, having won five and drawn six.
They sit in 11 place ahead of the weekend’s clash at home to Villa, three points outside the top six and four behind Bruce’s former employers.
Here’s what Villa fans are saying ahead of the meeting:
Aiden Bradley: Turned up to work after losing both parents and guided us to the play off final. Cracking bloke. Villa just needed to move forward and Bruce's football wasn't happening at Villa. Respect to the bloke I say.
Sean Baker: Deserves a good reception.
Phil Wattison: We should give him a great reception...respect the guy.
Nick Howlett: We treated him poorly in the end.
JD Carter: Undervalued and driven out by knee jerk supporters.
Jimmy Cobra: Nothing but respect for this man. All his personal stuff was never an excuse. Love the man to bits and will always be grateful to him for steadying the ship.
Yeoh Tze Siang: Please travelling fans, don't boo him. Congratulate him, show him we have class.
Mark Buswell: Remember he signed McGinn! What a player he has turned out to be. Bruce deserves respect!
James Richards: Great guy, turned us around. Just got stale
Micheal Knott: Still a good manager, respect earned for the way he conducted himself while grieving loss of family. But personally was he big enough a person to manage Villa, I don't think so. Wish him all the best (after next weekend).
Brian J Nutt: Greatest respect for this guy. As a player he was one of the best and nearly succeeded as a manager, but the world inside and outside of football went wrong for him at the same time. Good luck Brucie, you should always be welcome down Villa.
Daniel Witherstone: No hard feelings, he turned up at the play-off final...it was the players that failed to return the favour!

Fuck off.
(Not aimed at you not3bad, of course)
-
Left us with a squad not fit for purpose which Smith had to sort out and rightly got binned for it. Should have gone in the summer when his " get promoted using loans and then worry" plan failed - the implications of that are still waiting to be faced if we don't got up this season. Having said that, any real lingering resentment towards the guy has faded due to him not being here anymore. He is what he is - I can see him getting Sheffield Wednesday up during his time there, but staying up for any long period of time? I doubt it.
-
Never liked him. Still don't. Don't wish him any harm of course, and it was terribly sad about his parents, but he wasn't the man for us.
-
Some selective Fan choices there.
-
Fuck off.
(Not aimed at you not3bad, of course)
Fuck off indeed. That's two Aston Villa fans both saying something entirely different.
-
Comes across as a decent enough bloke and conducted himself with real dignity during some really tough personal circumstances in the second half of last season, but ultimately failed to do the job he was brought in to do. Should have been relieved of his duties after losing the play off final, but I can understand why he wasn't given the circumstances at the club.
His habit of turning things round on the fans after poor defeats became annoying, but I can't really get too worked up about him either way to be honest.
-
Not sure why Michael Knott thinks he wasn't big enough to manage Aston Villa unless he thinks Smith isn't big enough?? He was certainly physically big enough...…….
-
That’s an April fool right. Decent guy, ran out of ideas and left us criminally under prepared for this season.
-
Yes fuck off thrice!
Wasted money on useless players, had many horrific runs where we didn't win a lot, even when we won it was hot pokers in eyes painful stuff and when he won two games in a row he would have a go at the fans. So fuck off indeed.
-
Respect is a 2 way thing and the state he left the club in this season, especially defensively, showed a lack of respect by him for the biggest and best club he is ever likely to manage.
I firmly believe that if he was still in charge we would currently be fighting a relegation battle. Of course I always sympathised with him losing both his parents in the way he did, but quite simply he didn't do the job he was paid handsomely to do. He didn't make the playoffs in his 1st season when it was possible to do. He was no where near autos last season and failed in the playoff final due to his tactics (esp 1st half). This season he was disasterous. I will be hoping that football wins over bruceball on saturday for the good of the game. UTV!
-
This will probably be our most difficult game of season. Got battered for most of this fixture last season before turning it around late on.
Bruce has had a great start at Sheff Wed with limited resources, it's often a situation where he does his best work. Giving him a blank cheque like his first and final transfer windows with us, is where things start going wrong for him. I'm in a minority but I liked a lot of what he did at Villa, it wasn't sustainable but that wasn't the instant promotion at all costs brief he was given by Xia/Wynnes. Failing to replace Terry was his critical mistake, ending in farce v Preston with three right backs in defence and Bunn in goal!!
-
Why do we even need to acknowledge him on Saturday? He wasn't a roaring success as manager so hardly deserves a hero's welcome, but equally he didn't really do anything to warrant abuse.
-
I honestly don't care about the guy now he's left, it was never personal and I really don't care how the fans react either way. However a couple of those comments are just out right bullshit:
Nick Howlett: We treated him poorly in the end.
JD Carter: Undervalued and driven out by knee jerk supporters.
He was treated and valued exactly as he deserved to be, leaving us after 2 years (almost to the day) in pretty much the same position he found us having invested a fortune in older players and loans so we couldn't just sell his squad and use the money to fund replacements. Of his signings we'd make a profit on McGinn and maybe on Hourihane but all the rest are going to cost us far more than we'll ever get back and, in the main, haven't done enough to earn the money spent on them.
-
I find those type or click baity headlines really annoying.
-
Liked him as a bloke when he first come
disliked him in the end with his bullshit at the end
He could have completely fu@ked up this club in the end .
Anyway we move on.
-
I wouldn't applaud him and I wouldn't jeer him. I sympathize with his parents passing and his health scare. Nice guy, a reasonably good manager who did his best and came close to taking us up and can consider himself unlucky with how the play off final panned out. He was quite rightly given a reasonable amount of time this season but it was clear by the end (and probably even sooner than that) that it was time to go. His excuses and little digs at us fans towards the end were annoying and clearly a defensive distraction tactic on his part. He obviously thought that as the kids today would say it was 'our bad' for not being appreciative of negative football and a mid table position. I was quite happy when he was appointed and quite happy when he was sacked. He may well get Sheffield Wednesday promoted in the next year or two and everyone in the media will tell us we were wrong to sack him. But they would be wrong.
-
He should never have been appointed.
-
FOPH
-
I respected him as a bloke but I thought he pretty much under performed for most of the time he was here given the resources available to him. I think he deserves neither stick nor praise, which pretty much sums up his tenure. Meh.
I wish him well for the future, apart from Saturday.
-
He's gone and we are moving forward now which will do for me.
-
Can't stand the bloke. I hope we absolutely batter Wednesday, then we can all be condescendingly nice about him afterwards. He can put it down to it being "one of those horrible ones" and how we never gave him a chance, and we can move further towards a play off place, while he wallows in mid table mediocrity a bit longer.
-
They were shite against Stoke and haven't lost under him yet, so I hope we give them the run around and put 3 on them.
-
Over the last few years, a Bruce v Smith game normally sees the former and his team get a lesson in pass and move.
I hope we absolutely batter them.
-
We should neither boo him or cheer him IMO. He was never suited to us and lasted 18 months longer then he should of but that’s not his fault. He’s gone now and is just a poor memory for me for all the reasons quoted above.
-

Exactly what I was thinking.
P.S. Fuck the fat, negligent tosser.
-
Either a very non-representative selection of fans quoted or else the vibe about Bruce on here was atypical. Nothing personal against him but he was a very mediocre football manager who wasted a fortune (McGinn excepted) and still managed to leave behind a hopelessly inadequate lopsided squad.
-
Who gives a shit? He's gone and has been replaced by a manager that immediately got the same bunch of players playing some of the best football we've seen down Villa Park in years. I sympathise with his personal life issues last year but we have nothing to thank him for as a manager. We go there, do a professional job and come home with 3pts.
-
The Mail asking Villa fans to be thankful for the shit we were left in by Steve Bruce? This is why you should never click on their shit. Shitrag bollocks.

My thoughts exactly.

you don't think they have nothing to report on do you ??
-
I will struggle to forgive him for spoiling my day at Wembley with that total no show and cowardly tactics.
-
FOPH
Yep, that’s about summed it up for me.
-
I wish him no ill will and it's a shame about his parents we move on I just want three points against his Sheff Wed side.
-
I'm reasonably ambivalent towards Bruce. He came, steadied thevshipnand did a good job to get us tothe playoff final but was too 'Steve Bruce' on the day. He then was lazy once the takeover happened and looked for a pay off.
I'm glad we have Dean Smith whatever happens this season now.
-
In a few years time I'll barely remember that he managed us.
-

I'm kind of going that way now
-
Its been reported he attempted to block the extra allocation of tickets ....sounds like he knows exactly what we think of him !!!

There is only so much cabbage one person can eat.
-
Hope we beat them but think the pantomime villain thing is overdoing it a bit.
-
For me we are going to have a couple of days Thursday / Friday when the mgr press conferences are on for the weekend where his press pals are going to make out that he was a massive victim of big bully Villa and he will probably say something to fuel that.
We’ll have a tough game against Wednesday because this is his ‘free hit’ season like Pulis last year at Boro who turned up & played Traore because it wasn’t ‘his team’ then this year reverted to type with mind numbing football Bruce will do the same come August.
Whilst he was going through the horrible time with his parents he got nothing but support and respect which was you’d expect - he should have gone after he bottled the play off final with his panic about opposition tactics but financial circumstances left him as a safe-ish pair of hands. Once the new owners walked in and he knew he was on thin ice he struck me as a kid having a tantrum, his transfer dealings were shit or bust & he knew bust meant a big fat cheque came his way. Signing Bolasie on stupid wages when he wasn’t immediately available was crass stupidity & although he went after Bryan & the French centre back he sanctioned Elphick leaving without adequate cover, bonkers!
With the expensive, experienced back room staff he had at his disposal and the ability to bring in Premier League quality like Terry & Snodgrass he failed massively.
He’ll only be remembered as the latest in a long line to fail to get to grips with the job.
-
I still think Bruce did a lot for us and was pretty pivotal in stopping us heading into absolute free-fall.
I like him a lot and think he deserves respect for his time here, tbh.
-
I still think Bruce did a lot for us and was pretty pivotal in stopping us heading into absolute free-fall..
He was appointed to take us up, not tread water. We chucked the kitchen sink at it and he failed

What a pile of bollocks.
-
I still think Bruce did a lot for us and was pretty pivotal in stopping us heading into absolute free-fall.
I like him a lot and think he deserves respect for his time here, tbh.
The season he did a lot for us was the first season after we came down when he stabilised and stopped the rot up to Christmas, though in my view he proved that season what was to come with some truly eye bleeding football and poor runs of form allied to spending huge sums of money on transfers.
Getting to the Play Off final last season masked so may deficiencies in his management and the shit or bust approach he’d (and Wyness/Xia) taken to getting promoted.
The guy like so many other British managers has been left behind by modern football, he can come in and organise a bunch of underperforming players with little money and a defensive mindset (there or thereabouts) but ask him to construct a team with money and a progressive approach and he just can’t do it.
-
He has gone and we have moved on. He had his chance and was too cautious to fully capitalise on it. He also left us with an unbalanced squad.
-
He lied repeatedly, blamed everyone else to deflect from his own incompetence, insulted the fans, gave it the big one after beating mighty Rotherham at home, so he can go fuck himself. That said if I was at the game I wouldn't boo him, i'd just ignore him and leave him to watch what football should be like as we tear Weds apart non stop.
-
I wish him no ill will and it's a shame about his parents we move on I just want three points against his Sheff Wed side.
Roughly where I am with it. He's gone, we happen to be up against his new side on Saturday but the three points are all that matters really.
-
I hope the team and fans don't get embroiled in focusing on Bruce as it may end up deflecting from the task in hand - a game we need to win.
I won't be jeering or cheering him on Saturday. He wasn't the best of managers, but equally we've had much worse. He made some bad signings and made some decent ones too. He always seems a genuine bloke as well.
-

In the interests of balance...Also ran McCormack from the club, helped Grealish turn his career around, signed McGinn, got us to the playoff final and gutted a thoroughly underperforming squad.
His post game comments after that Rotherham game were pathetic alright, we were woeful the same day and fortunate to win! I think it was apparent reasonably early this season how woefully unbalanced the squad was, Bruce no doubt realised this far too late.
Bruce was our best manager since MON I'd argue, faint praise but still there are some real clowns in that list.
-
He took us over in the bottom half of the championship with an unbalanced squad that were struggling to win games because of defensive lapses and left us 2 years later with an unbalanced squad that was struggling to win win games because of the defence.
That's what he should be remembered for, 2 years with loads of money and left us exactly where he found us having been part of a management group that nearly bankrupt us.
-
If we win on Saturday, he'll probably try and claim the credit for that
-
If we win on Saturday, he'll probably try and claim the credit for that
I would put money on him shoehorning the fact he got us to a play off final into any post match conversation.

Don’t forget him saving us from relegation in his first season too. (Even though that was never remotely likely).
-
We should set up Brucie Bingo for his conference
-
I’ve nothing against the bloke, he did his best but it was nowhere near good enough. I hope he doesn’t get abuse.
We are in a far better place now.

All in all I hope any reception given to ste Bruce is a loud and warm one
-
I dont. He failed. I hope we mock him with a chant of "there or there abouts" when we're 2 up after 25 minutes.
-
The brass neck on this guy. Still giving it the poverty line...Steve you increased the wage bill by 10m plus!
You had the best squad in the league, the most expensive squad and you failed. Finishing 4th and losing in the Play Offs might be one of your finest achievements as you claim, but its utterly unacceptable for us and you were so lucky not to be sacked in May.

No, they just went back to the clubs that owned them, or retired altogether.
I was told we had to sell Grealish, we had to sell this one and that one, basically to pay the wages. That's how bad it was.
Who on earth did we sell? Did we sell anyone?

Bruce’s SWFC press conference:
Didn’t get enough time at Villa.
Only 2 clubs spent less than Villa in 2018.
Called Mat Kendrick a horrible git.

Said ‘off with me head’ once.

There was a cabbage flying around in the Southwark Tavern before the Millwall game this season. Whoever bought it must've got it from Borough Market which is next door to the pub. Must have cost a bob or two, that artisan cabbage.

Yes Steve, it appeared to be very, very bad at one point. But you forgot to mention that we were then taken over by very rich new owners who then allowed you to keep Jack on a much improved contract and bring in a number of expensive new signings both permanently and on loan. They then gave you a chance to prove yourself but you won only one game in nine and we were 12th in the league. Your replacement has taken us up into the play off places. Despite the fact you left him with more goalkeepers to choose from than defenders.
-
Taken from the Sheffield star. Yes he actually said it 😂😂😂😂
But Bruce, who has yet to lose as Wednesday boss having lifted the Owls up to 11th and four points off former employers, is acutely aware of Villa's strengths and weaknesses.
He said: "They’ve got some good players. And I always said they would be there or thereabouts.

I haven't got much beef with him other than how ridiculously unbalanced the squad looked on 1/9/18. That was the only time i felt that hed gone at something half arsed, although there were other times when he hadn't seemed to engage his brain.
-
He will be insufferably smug if we do not beat them.
-
I hope we absolutely hammer them today but other than that, I have no ill feeling towards the bloke at all.
-
He's being going on about us again, how "real fans give the manager time". The lumpy-faced twat. Didn't see him turning the job down when RDM was sacked after 10 games. He only got the job because it was off with RDM's head, to use a Bruceism. I hope we fucking stuff them today.
-
If we’d been 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League and through to the FA Cup Final when he was sacked he might have a point, but we weren’t and he can do one.
-
Just read his comments yesterday. "I can make as many excuses as i want but its not me" What utter fucking drivel this highly paid millionaire comes out with. " only Ipswich Millwall and Burton spent less than us" Cherry picking a moment in time while totally ignoring the facts. He genuinely thinks he deserves prsise for getting us to the play off final. The opposite is the truth. He had the most expensive squad ever assembled in the Championship. Automatic promotion was the least we could have expected. He spent millions on the likes of Hogan while giving not a fleeting thought as to how players would actually fit together in any coherent way. He had the luxury of top Premier players like Snodgrass, Terry, Bolasie, Johnston, Grabban etc on eye watering wages. Aligning us with those footballing giants Ipswich Burton and Millwall making himself look like a god damn managerial genius for making the play offs. Sorry but any lingering respect i had for him has gone. He's a fucking fantasist, a blagger of the highest order and he can fuck right off and fuck off again.
-
He's not on my Christmas card list, either.

"It's a great club, and it was an honour to be their manager. I gave it my very best shot, I came close, but in the end it wasn't quite enough. Perhaps I stayed a little longer than maybe I should've, but we've all moved on, and I truly wish them all the best for the future.
Apart from Saturday, obviously."

There you go, Steve, you can have that free of charge.

I moved on a long time ago, but i'm still going to enjoy stuffing him at home with them playing typical Bruceball which was why the sensible amongst us didn't want him within 100miles of Villa Park in the first place.

I've enjoyed the hilarious, salty posts from Owls Talk that's entertained me over the past couple of days, but spare a thought for this poor deluded soul, who has no idea of the misery that awaits him/her over the coming months.
To see Villa or Leeds not go up is fine with me, this is why I don't have a problem if those numptys at The Lane go up. It's more than likely they would endure a torrid time in the prem.
Meanwhile, next season Bruce can carry on his rebuilding, and those arrogant knobheads can look forward to paying extortionate prices when they come here.
Yesterday was daylight robbery, but we've a lot to look forward too.
I did like like this though :D

Bruce conveniently forgets that the aforementioned Ipswich outplayed us earlier in the season, despite being a man down for almost an hour, Millwall outplayed us TWICE last season, and Burton caused us all sorts of problems in the first season in this league
-
Burton beat us in the cup and didnt millwall beat us as well?
-
How many shots on target did they have? Apart from goal and penalty?
-
3.

Meh

Some Wednesday fans saying it was daylight robbery us winning 3-1 Not Half as bad as being charged £39 FOR A TICKET

Don't think he is over-fond of us as someone said to me yesterday.

i guess hes talking net spend because of the 2 years of his reign we spent the thick end of 100m and he still failed ,,still stick to the fantasy that you were hard done by m8
-
It was classic Bruce. They resorted to hit and hope. We had to be strong defensively which we are with Steer, Mings and House. Unlike the shite back four he left us with.
-
Sorry to bump the dinosaur thread, but thought this was worthwhile bringing up to show what an utter bullshitter Bruce is.
Last week, Steve Bruce after the Sheffield Wednesday game against Preston, said:
"I think we've lost two in 19 games, and in anyone's book I think that's quite a turnaround.
"At the end of the season we'll probably end up three or four points short (of the play-offs), and that's a terrific effort considering where we were."
They actually finished 10 points short of the play offs. Where were they when he took over, before the 'terrific effort'? 9 points short of the play offs.
Twat.
-
Yes, but at least he got his holiday in.
-
Good spot Risso. I guess Spud will claim an assist if Dean finishes the job for him and gets us promoted.

Surely that’s a technicality as he was in the West Indies for a month so could literally do nothing about it save for the odd phone call from the beach?

How can it be a technicality?

At the point where he'd finished his holiday and actually joined them and started working, they were 9 points off the play offs.
-
Wednesday fans should be grateful. He saved them from certain relegation and took them within a mere win of play off position. The man is miraculous.
-
Oh good. Didn’t want him getting off on a technicality anyway. Great statto work.

Tweet that quote to Michael Morgan (Yorkshire journalist who works for the S*n).
A few weeks back a Villa fan actually tweeting him asking why Journalists give SB a much easier ride than other managers and his response was something like SB always takes us out for lunch or something!
-
To the kebab shop!!
-

You don't need to guess. You can bet your life he will try to claim credit for us being in the play offs and even try to claim some credit if we go up.
You can fool all of the people all of the time so long as you suck up to them and take them all out for lunch.
-
His specialism is not quite the specialism it was.
-
I thought they were a better side when Forestieri was playing but wasn't.
-
If we get promoted, I’ll probably give the old woman a pass but only because of the signing of McGinn.
Spud cnut.

By the looks of it, he must be meeting a journalist every lunch time.
-
There are so many journalists so quite often two lunches have to be taken in a day.
-
Steve looks like he takes two lunches a day regardless .

Aye, enjoys a good pie or two!!🥟🥟

I DO NOT LIKE BRUCE!
But the one guy that has cost us for the last two seasons whilst BANKRUPTING the club, is easily forgotten. That criminal cost us the start of the season. Hopefully, his real backers
will see him floating in the Yangste soon.
-
A little extreme, if I may say so.

I bet he wears a really cheap looking pair of trunks.

Oh I get it now - I thought he was talking about drowning a specious communist billionaire.

Just had a look at their fans forum. God they really are a bunch of numpties, buying into the BS that Bruce is going to go against everything he's ever done, by signing young, fast players who they presume will be "versatile". Ha, Ha, Ha!!!!

I did the same the other day, mass delusion on that scale is something to behold.
They're still buying into the "promotion specialist" bullshit, despite the fact that he got them absolutely nowhere near the play offs this year. Ah well, they'll learn, bless 'em. You'd think that they might cast an eye over the city to their neighbours, and see what a proper progressive manager can achieve.

It’ll be the same as Pulis at Smogland last year - joined mid season so had the free hit few months where he used the likes of Traore - start first full season and back to the old, experienced & deadly dull boring durge - Bruce will be the same next year - the old & slow players in Prem will be waiting for his call for a last payday.
-
Maybe the real reason he couldn't start the job at Wednesday on time in January was that he had to finish his memoirs in a hot climate.
-
When he goes on a run of not winning in 6 games next season and gets some stick he will be claiming Owls fans are getting on his back because he used to manage the Blades.

That's clearly fake. As if a quote from Gregg Evans wouldn't have any spelling mistakes in it.

Agreed, he does seem to have a talent for joining clubs where the excuses are already written for him. Sunderland would never accept a Geordie, Hull had a mental Chairman, We wouldn't accept a bluenose, etc.
-
If we go up his media pals will interview him and will tell us all how he played a significant hand in it. I’m sure he’s already got his notes lined up about Sheffield United’s rise because of him despite being manager back in 1999

I am hearing it'll be a two book deal. The first is entitled 'I am not a cabbage', the second one is called 'it is never, ever, my fault, ever'.

Aren't Albion already the most promoted and relegated club from the Championship and Premier League? They can put another notch on the tally this season.

All us fans of different clubs can't be wrong. When are the media going to start reporting the truth instead of the myth
I feel for them but the dinosaus such as Bruce, Alladyce and Pulis et al the game has now passed them by and its time to put thier feet up
-
Poor old Geordies, the same suffering as a long list of supporters. I remember someone on here posting an old blog from Sunderland which highlighted the way he operated and all their woes. That was quite early in his role here, so it was more like a warning of what was to come for us.

The Jag was in its usual place, outside the club reception. It’s an XJ8, 3.2, sports version, V Reg. As I drove fast to the infirmary, following the ambulance as it cut a swathe through the traffic I wasn’t thinking of power assisted steering and speed sensitive variable ratios…
…I was considering how life can be sweet, one minute and suddenly, without warning, we are dead. Nobody can foretell the place and hour of their death, which is perhaps as well. The important thing is to make the best of life while we can.
The XJ8 has just about everything a man could wish for in a motor car. Or, for that matter, a woman could ask for. While there are few women in the highest levels of soccer management, there are many women in business at top managerial levels. They’ll make their presence felt in soccer as the years go by. Mechanically, the car has many excellent features. 3.2 litre AAJ-V8 all alloy engine; anti-locking brake system; facia and side-airbags for both the driver and the front passenger; power assisted steering; stability control; five speed electronic automatic transmission. The audio system couldn’t be better. There are nine speakers and a six-disc CD autochanger. Do I sound like a car salesman?
