Yesterday was exactly 45 years since my dad took my bother and I to a Second Division match against Albion. Afterwards he said he wouldn't take us to another local derby... So my first Blues game was the 3-0 in the Championship season with my school mates

Sometime in the 1950's.  Buggered if I can remember who won.  I remember us beating them at home 6-2 in 1960, Gerry Hitchens got a hat-trick.

February 1978 - a 1-0 defeat at their place where we literally battered them. Could have scored 5. Hit post and bar on more than one occasion and had a few kicked off the line.

At the sty in 1980 near the beginning of our title winning season, around September I think. We won 1-2, Frank Worthington scored a penalty for them and Sid with a penalty and Allan Evans volley on the turn won it for us. My bluenose uncle took me as my other uncle who he usually went with was working so I had his season ticket. My uncle sat on one side of me in their main stand and sat the other side of me was Benny from Crossroads.

A very hot day and we scored first. Andy Gray, I think. John Connelly and Francis for them if I recall correctly.

That was my first derby as well. I was distraught - our only defeat at home that season. They  beat us 1-0 at Villa Park the following season too. I didn’t see us beat them until Sid’s winner in 1979.

The 2-1 defeat at home when Barry scored in 90th min.

Couldn’t believe how shit we were and 2-0 down at halftime.

Very next was 3-1 win with Baros scoring and since then I haven’t seen us lose at home to them.

That 2-1 defeat in December 2004...we were absolutely dreadful in that first half. Heskey looked like the world's greatest striker. They were rampant and we could have been 4 or 5 down.

That was my second Blues game.

Third was the Cahill game, fourth was the 5-1. Both helped to eradicate the memories of the previous two, and then some.

At their place in the balloons period - we won 1-2 I think, Chico scored? all a bit vague but I remember Tony Butler on the pitch before kickoff getting a lot of stick and a surge where everyone near me fell forward but instead of righting ourselves we got stuck at a 45 ° angle and stayed like it for about 5 minutes. Could have been scary but we were teenagers so just a bit of a laugh.

12 April 1969, in the old second division, we won 1-0 at VP, Dave Simmons scoring the only goal.   This was during the revival brought about by the new regime, with Tommy Docherty as manager, which saw attendances leap from 12,000 to up around 60,000 in a matter of weeks.  The crowd for the Birmingham derby was just under 53,000.

1986 and even though we struggled that season we had picked up a bit by the time of the derby (helped by the signings of Steve Hunt and Andy Blair on deadline day) and when I saw their line up I was convinced we would win comfortably. They had been having an even worse season than us but I think Wayne Clarke got a couple of Steve Whitton scored the other one. Saunders had left a couple of months before and John Bond was in charge of them.

I do remember SGT slaughtering the team in his post match interviews. I think the Small Heath game was his first home game in charge. I don't recall him calling the players nuns but I do recall him saying they played like a bunch of schoolgirls. I strongly suspect he was self censoring himself in the media and that in the dressing room they were being called a hell of a lot worse than nuns and schoolgirls.

As a twelve year old I thought the 1983 game was great. I think Small Heath had started the season slightly better than us and their fans were giving it the big 'un on BRMB on the Friday night before the game. We had just got our first video recorder and I think the first thing I taped was the brief highlights from Central News on the Monday night. The goal, the sending off, Blake's phantom goal he thought he had scored, his penalty miss and his headbutt on McMahon. Ron Saunders fell out big time with Central for showing the Blake/McMahon incident and I think he banned them or tried to ban them from St. Andrew's.

1 - 0 home win in the cup Deano scoring. I was pretty young and don’t remember much of the game, in fact all I remember from the night was the goal and celebrating wildly. My Mom and I took up our normal season ticket seats in the back row lower Witton Lane in the block right next to that lot from what I can remember but don’t recall any trouble.

St Andrews 1969, end of season that we were relegated into the third division, we went there and battered them 2-0 with a 25 yard thunderbolt from Bruce Rioch and another from Pat McMahon.
We played in our yellow shirts and blue shorts kit and I remember standing on the Cattell Road side of the ground, amongst Blues and Villa fans in the pouring rain, which hardly ebated throughout the match, cascading off the top of the corrugated iron stand and soaking all underneath.
The toilets at the back of the stand were flooded, sending torrents down the delapadated terracing.
This, I think, was the first appearance of the Villa chant of "What a fecking p*sshole", that continues to this day and gets an airing from all who suffer the facilities at the Sty.
Villa were awful but probably turned in their best performance that year, Blues were also down near the bottom but just survived the drop.
I had to wait awhile before we played them again.
I do hate this fixture.

Same game as you Oscar. I can remember a shocking crush to get in with so many Villa fans going.
Fantastic goal by Rioch I recall, celebrated by a large group of Villa fans behind the goal in the Tilton.
Much scrapping ensued which was fascinating to a 9 year old. I can see why I wasn't allowed to go to a Derby before that.

Don't go up the Cattell road, cos you'll get foot and mouth!

In light of last Sunday's events up there.  I went to that game in 1969 with my then next door neighbours, father and three sons; every one of them Noses and all good men.  We stood on the Kop me being Villa and all around me Blues.  I shouted and roared for the Villa and was as happy as a dog with two cocks when we won and never, in the entire time I was in there felt in the slightest bit threatened and never had in the many, many times I'd been in there.  I think it was only in the early seventies did it start to become menacing and we all began to herd together in numbers for safety.  That's how I remember it anyway.

My first visit there was when we beat them 1-2 in our Championship winning season with Sid scoring a penalty and Allan Evans getting the winner. I was nine and maybe it was due to my youth and naivety but I don't recall any tension or nastiness. My one and only time was Villa Park 2010, the Milner penalty.

Though I did go to the Sty for a charity match around 2004 or 2005. Small Heath were about 8-0 up against a charity XI when I made the mistake of laughing and clapping sportingly when Darren from The Royle Family scored a consolation for the Celebrities and went rolling around with no shirt on to celebrate.

I was then promptly asked to leave by a steward.

As I was marched out I had drinks thrown at me, and was shoved and called a 'pikey Villa ******' by a different steward who must've been in his 50s (I was about 15).

It was nice to see they take no days off from their hatred of us. God knows what they do for red nose day, a charity effigy-burning perhaps.

Those two games were the second and third Villa/Small Heath games I attended. The atmosphere at the sty was toxic. Blake was getting pelters and "Villa reject" shouted at him and then he scored one of their goals. I remember the Evening Mail showing a picture of him flicking the V sign to the Villa fans after his goal with the headline 'Rejects revenge'. The only thing I recall of the return game at Villa Park is that Gary Shaw's winning goal came late on in the game. The last ten minutes I think.

Unless there is a friendly which I've forgotten, the first was the Paul Tait/Dean Saunders game. I also saw a few reserve/youth type matches against them. We lost more of those than we won, as I recall.

The turning point of the 3-0 was when Villa 'equalised' when Withe headed in Walters's cross, only for the ref to disallow the goal for a foul -on Walters!!

Yes, even then...

2-1 home win in 1975. I've watched the highlights on Youtube. Some of the challenges make you wince.

It wasn't my first game against them and it wasn't even the first time I had seen us play them at the sty but I remember going there for a Birmingham Senior Cup final around 1983. It was on the same day as the Charity Shield at Wembley I think and a week before the season kicked off. There was a big crowd for a 'friendly' but obviously not as many as for a league game. I recall both clubs fielded their strongest teams.  All I can remember other than that is that it was a hot day and Ian Handysides scored the only goal of the game.

Damo, I was thrown out that day and told I would be charged wi5 threatening words and behaviour. I think I was doing the Howard Gayle, what a wanker thing with hand gestures. The police were picking people off one by one but I was too righteous and stubborn to move. When I got outside there must have been about 200 of us who’d been thrown out. I recall a spicy march back to town after the game.

A pre-season friendly. I think 1971 or 72 could be later, I was very young. I might have it wrong but I'm sure Malcolm Beard who we'd signed from Blues played a half for each team. We won 2-1 I think.  I also remember seeing fisticuffs in the Holte from my Witton End position.

The Christmas 1982 debacle at the Sty, we were in the Railway End.  Horrible.

First win was a few months later at VP, Gary Shaw I think.

Was the Christmas one 3-0 to them? 3 is the most I've seen them put past us. Meanwhile Ive seen us put 6 past them, 5 a couple of times and a 4.

Yup, the Boxing Day defeat was 3-0.

I think Gary Shaw's winner a few months later was on Easter Monday. Imagine that fixture being played on a bank holiday now?!

I was at the game when Gary Cahill scored against them and if my memory is correct I think that was played on Easter Sunday

It was. I was dragged sofa shopping the next day. I sat on every settee we looked at, not out of interest but as a result of the crippling hangover I was lugging around.

I went with a mate of mine I worked with, a big Villa fan called Dave (who your Dad would have known) and after the game I ended up drinking with him and his family in his local in Kings Heath. He had two very attractive sisters.

As an indication of my devotion to her, I invited my then fiancee to her first derby match in the 81/82 season at St
Andrews. As a date it wasn't wildly successful - we somehow got trapped on the wasteland behind the Tilton Rd end dodging stones being lobbed at the Villa fans queuing to get in. Later we ended up in one of the usual ambushes on the way back into town and had to leg it.On the bright side Peter Withe won us the game! Years later we inadvertently got caught up in a riot in Paris which she declared to be nothing compared to her day out in Small Heath which remains her go to maximum on the fear barometer.

I wasn't at that game for some reason. Did Ron Saunders actually take his place on the bench that day or was he just watching from the stands? I know he had accepted the job but I can't recall if he had officially taken over in time to take charge of them that day.

Alan O'Neill signed from Sunderland I think score 2 on his debut. Peter Mac and a Gerry H hat-trick
In number order
Sims
Neal (rep. Lynn)
Winton
Thomson (rep. Crowe)
Dugdale
Saward
MacEwan
O'Neill
Hitchens
Wylie
McParland

Probably the last time I saw Gerry play in the flesh. Still the best no. 9 I ever saw play. That season ?? 42 goals in 56 appeareances.

Not my first game but I was on the Holte End the night we beat them in the Simod Cup 6-0. 9th November 1988. Which happened to be my eighteenth birthday. I still have the club match video somewhere in my house.
