Title: Stoke City vs Aston Villa pre-match thread
Post by: Risso on February 17, 2019, 12:34:01 PM
Sat 23 February 3pm.

Our record against them is pretty ropey at the best of times, and with McGinn out, god knows what midfield Smith will be able to put out.

Woah...this is waaaay too early, surely? Tuesday afternoon at least before we dream of the joys of Stoke.

But if you must...they are even more of an embarrassment than us given their squad. Doing a good impression of Villa 16/17 (and, er. 18/19).
We need to do what opposition teams do to us, grab the lead and sit on it. Should be enough. 1-0, Abraham.

It's really hard to see what team he can put out.

Kalinic
Hutton Elphick Mings Hause
Elmo Ramsey Bjarnason
Kodjia Tammy Adomah

I can't think of a single midfield combination that wouldn't make Jesus pull the wings off a baby angel.

Hutton

Carroll
Whelan
Ramsey

El Ghazi
Tammy
Green

I can actually see us losing to this terrible Stoke team, that's how much of a write off this season is now. Just so uninspiring and little to get excited about.

1-0 and probably someone loathesome scoring like James McClean.

Whelan is obviously going to start given it's his old club and I understand all those who want Hourihane dropped but with limited options the experienced players will continue starting.

Edit: If Carroll can train this week I imagine he'll be put in so that's as much freshing up of the midfield as we're likely to get.

Nothing to do with IRA tbh. Just never like this type of player who runs around like a madman and lunges into players all the time (see some of the tackles he did on opposition playing for West Brom). Just think he's a bit of a clogger who's lucky he played in premier league as many years as he did.

Reminds me of Stephen Hunt when he was apparently all the rage at Reading and his career quickly fizzled out.

Stoke been playing him as central striker recently which hasn't been much of a success....

We've not scored in three of our last four, kept one clean sheet in that time and will be missing another of our better players.  Hard to see anything other than a home win but sometimes just when we don't appear to have any chance at all we pull one out of the bag.  Also, every week I think the previous week was rock bottom and this will be when we turn it all around.  But I can't see that either.  Most of our players are shit not up to it.

As week after week of this shit piles up the more I think we might not reach rock bottom until some way into next season.

So, to sum up, 4-0 to us.  Morley (2), Daley (2)

Good call.
We are punch drunk. Our new goalie went off bamboozled at half time. Chap next to me brings sports binoculars and told me the fellow was non compos mentis and possibly seeing stars.
I told him that all stars had  definitely deserted our firmament and that I am no longer sure that my redeemer liveth. He took it badly but sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind.

If we go on the front-foot again we'll win 1-3 with Tammy rediscovering his scoring form.

Sadly, I think we're more likely to play both Whelan and Jedinak in central midfield with Hologram in front of them...and we'll lose 2-0.

Well an odd game this. Stoke could be having a close look at their immediate future if they make the same mistakes we did. Don't know why but i think we'll nick this. With McGinn our best midfielder out, bizarrely i think the midfield will gell a bit better and be more balanced 0-1

I’m going and have no idea what to expect. Other than its Stoke so liable to be cold despite probably being 15 degrees. I’d play a really boring 4-5-1 with Jedinak, Whelan sitting and Kodjia behind Abraham. Out wide Elmo and Green. So 0-0.

4-0 them.

We seem to be hitting new levels of low, the 2-0 last weekend was another all time low in the 30 years + i've been a fan. This is certainly the worst side i've ever seen and this season has become the most depressing hopeless joyless season i've ever known. The relegation season was bad, don't get me wrong, but at least there was hope that in the lower division we would come back strong and be back up in 3 years max, possibly less. This is our third season down, we are now looking every bit a mid table division 2 team and i have no idea how we're going to break out of this cycle. 3 lots of owners in in past 3/4 years and a massive turnover of senior staff, 6/7 managers in 4 years, a squad of older players in decline, younger players who are struggling and players at their peak age that are shit. Most of the few good players we have are injured all the while and have bad track records in that regard over the past few years. Nearly everyone we've signed for nearly a decade has been shit or injured and we have another massive squad re-build ahead. For all of those reasons plus Stoke being a bogey side and McGinn being out, we're going to get hammered. And so am i.

No SJG, and given the lack of options off the bench on Saturday don't know who's fit to replace him. Probably be Hologram, Whelan and Jedinak (*gulp*).  I'd like to see Smith go 4-4-2 instead for this one and take the game to them. Hopefully Jack will be on the bench to get a few late minutes, but can't see us getting anything. 3-1 to them

Maybe this is why Lansbury is a always injured:

Quote
I remember when Abdoulaye Faye warmed up in flip flops before a game at Chelsea at the end of one season and Glenn ended up taking him on in the dressing room. Sorted.

But if Glenn was in today’s Stoke dressing room he’d need his boxing gloves on half the time.

Yes; also it's not his fault he's playing in a position which doesn't suit him. He was getting loads of compliments last season, but now that he's not doing very well, he seems to have become the target for any jibe and an embodiment of all our troubles.

WTF!
Playground humour is great if you're 11!
I suppose the scapegoaters will be busy again this weekend in darkened cupboards, rubbing their thighs delighting in the fact that they "have a voice!"
Soooo sad!
Come on the Villa boys, lets get the 3 points!
Well said. It seems Hourihane is the new Ashley Westwood
Yes; also it's not his fault he's playing in a position which doesn't suit him. He was getting loads of compliments last season, but now that he's not doing very well, he seems to have become the target for any jibe and an embodiment of all our troubles.

His defensive efforts in the past few games have been pathetic, so I think he deserves criticism (although not personal abuse of course).  I thought, along with others I might add, that it became quite obvious towards the end of last season that we would need an upgrade on him in the summer, which to be fair McGinn was.

Hourihane is crap. Westwood was crap for us and is still crap now. Burnley in the Premier League or not.

It isn't playground humour, it isn't 'sooooo sad', it's nothing to do with 'scapegoaters', it's expressing an opinion about professional football players playing at a substandard level for our club.

To coin a crude, yet famous (ish) football chant, you can 'stick your fucking criticism of other fans criticising, up your arse'.

*It's not really coining a football chant....ah, fuck it. Too much wine.

Just win Villa.

Tammy's skills in dat training vid woz well-sick. He'd make muppets of most, not just Tayls and the Jedinator.

We could only dream of having Westwood back and that's saying something. Hourihane isn't a scapegoat, he's shite.

I watched Sky Sports (boo!) greatest goals of (I think) 2013 - 2014 this afternoon and one of them was the Snake’s goal against the Baggies. Westwood played a peach of a quick early ball out of defence, headed on by Benteke and bang into the back of the net by Delph. We would have ben purring if that pass was played by McGinn, and don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of SJM. I know I’m in a minority of 1 on here and will get pelters but in my h.o. it’s utter bollocks to say without any qualification that Westwood was shit. He clearly wasn’t, otherwise he wouldn’t have been picked time and time again by a succession of managers  and continues to be in the Premiership.  It’s all relative, compared with Kevin de Bruyne or David Silva, yes,  he’s clearly not in the same league. However, compared with others, he’s above average in open play, particularly in the Championship, say compared to Hourihane, although Hourihane is good at set pieces. Westwood was technically one of the most able players in that side and would be outstanding in our current team.  As would Daniel Johnson , Barry Bannan, Mark Albrighton or a host of our ex-players who get lots of stick from some Villa fans. Saying ‘Westwood was shit’ without any qualification is just a quick, easy trope, like saying Brexit would be easily fixed if politicians just got their fingers out and got on with it ...
I hereby claim my prize for being the world’s most hated man for managing to be pro- Westwood and anti- Brexit at the same time !!!  :)

He’s way better than May ! Have you ever seen her even pass it sideways let alone hit a defense splitting pass ?  She is truly the Bosko Balaban of British politics!

67% think we lose. I am one of them. No expectations we can get a result at Stoke.

The red and white may come out of the afternoon looking like Brazil.

It's got a draw written all over it really so i'll go for another 2-2. Abraham and Ramsey with ours.

2-0 Villa.
For the odd good showing here and there I can’t seem to forget the hours and hours of complete and utter anonymity of Westwood’s contributions to the team.

Tammy and Mings btw.

It was 2-1. Bacuna scored.

There was a very, very loud rendition of Achey Breaky Heart   We want Lerner out for most of the 2nd half.

I've gone for the bleedin' obvious (draw), but I've a funny feeling it could be won by a solitary goal - either way. If the latter, let's hope it'll go to our hapless mob rather than theirs.

Meh.

We have to win this, next 4 games are very much the banana skin that could see the end of Smith, more than capable of beating Stoke, lose this and it's curtains for him.

2-1 Villa.

McClean to torch us down the right side as with the fixture at Villa Park, sending a number of the brexiteer bigots in the away end into a frenzy. 3-0

1 0 Stoke Just a quick word about Westwood I was in the Trinity Road stand ,relegation season against Leicester I think, and a supporter give him stick for nearly all of the game, after about 80 mins I said you Know it’s Vertout your shouting at!

Back in the 90s, a game at Villa Park, I gave the referee Mike Riley absolute pelters for some awful decisions against us. I called him this, that and the other. No one said anything at the game, so you can imagine me watching it later to find out it wasn't him.....

I think that if he fails to win any of the next four games, it could well be curtains for him.  That would be 1 win in 14 games which would be enough to do for most managers.
