Another draw I expect.

In the run up to the match Dean Smith will say how well they've trained all week, then in his post-match press conference after answering a meaningless question about how nice it was to return to Brentford, he'll say how we didn't do enough in the first 60 minutes, while he shrugs his shoulders a lot, and pretends that the play offs aren't out of reach.

Well our ultimate bogey team and it's not like we've changed our 11 sufficently enough to counter them.

We played really well against them at VP in August (easily our best performance under SB in the 10 games he had this season) and they were still 10 seconds from winning.

That said I have a feeling we'll end the jinx and pinch it 1-2. Probably due to DS knowing their squad inside out so this really should be the best prepared we've been against them and you often see managers going back to old clubs and getting a good result.

Pulis makes a living out of it.

Will Chester or Grealish be back for this, even on bench?

---------------Kalinic
Elmo, Elphick, Mings, Hutton/Hause
Green, Whelan, McGinn, Adamoah
-----------------Hourihane
-----------------Abraham

No Jedinak, Taylor or Kodjia in the squad please Deano

Brentford have given us issues but that was largely thanks to Woods controlling the midfield. Without him, a midfield masterclass from Whelan will see us win.

Thanks legion ! for putting this thread up already gives some time to think and hear team news but I can give some insight. And will give initial prediction. (Maybe a revised one to come?!)

Also save me delving into the "why do we have such a struggle playing Brentford" thread

As we know villa haven't won away this year and since boxing day .

I've been reading up on reports and  Brentford away to forest and they dominated on match .
Also seeing highlights they certainly had a few chances .
Big on possession and 21 shots. 7 on target.
And a pk conceded was unfairly given (missed by the great grabban )
They still lost the match.
But have been on a 10 game unbeaten run.

I do think they have a chance to be got at having conceded conceded 2 goals plus in each of their last 3 matches.

Also the keeper Bentley (despite the pk save) was doing a good impression of Henderson or Nyland and was very poor at commanding and decision making

Brentford have 4 defeats in 15 home matches overall
And all their defeats have been by a one goal margin .

Villa have won 4 of 15 away matches
Twice by 3 goal margins (both under Smith)

My prediction is a 1 goal margin villa win. According to season so far any loss by Brentford at home they experience is only by 1

So rather than the 1-0 i could see a 2--1 or 3-2
A 4-3 wouldn't be a total surprise !!

Tammy to score all the goals .

Was it at Brentford at this stage a couple of years ago (post Bruce's first transfer window) that we got well and truly tonked? Seem to remember Bruce going with three at the back despite all his new midfield signings and they humiliated us.

Over the past 3 seasons we have struggled against Brentford. This time, there can't be an excuse for being ill-prepared, as Smith knows every one of their players, having also recruited many of them.

He will know Thomas Frank and the tactics, so the very least I am expecting is for us not to get passed off the field, not to be dominated, and moreover to exploit some of their known weaknesses.

SB special. Even he barely played those two as a combination from the start much last season but of course the one game he does it's against one of the most mobile and quick passing teams in the whole league.

Of course "that's the championship for you."

Has there been a pre-match Pravda presser for this?  Need my fix of an opening fifteen seconds of Dean joking and drinking and scratching his nose while our intrepid in-house reporter builds up the guts to ask him about how last Friday's comeback has the potential to be a catalyst and Smith replying that we had a poor first twenty minutes but after that there was nothing in it and now its two defeats in what, thirteen?

I never like "season defining" descriptions of games and writing off a target before it is mathematically impossible but tonight and Saturday may indicate what will happen for the remainder of this campaign.

Since Sandwell away we have resorted to dull, pedestrian, uninspiring football and the Manager has rotated a small number of the same faces with little difference to the results or way we play. The addition in defence has shored that up which is a plus but we still shipped 3 on Friday. As stated elsewhere we may have a bit of fizz following that startling comeback but the swashbuckling football of 'Boro and Derby away seems light years away.

Two wins are necessary, anything else will see us fall further away from the play offs and that acceptance of mid-table will become a greater reality. A reality which may become more stark if our performances see no improvement.

I'm mostly expecting another gubbing tonight, although I'm still hopeful of us somehow snaffling another point. Folk complain that this league is shite, but I think that's a conclusion drawn from our own level of incompetence. I'm just thankful that we've managed to amass enough points now for guaranteed mid-table mediocrity & not a potential plunge towards the depths. Meh.

2-1 Brentford.

Well, some things you can't replace ... buildings that've been around since the year dot and so on.  I often think, though, that as far as new grounds go the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff is really nice and seems to generate an intense atmosphere, the couple of times I've been anyway.

The problem is that Smith is likely to go with the same system ( a midfield 3)and we just do not have the players for it.
The fullback situation is well documented, a weak midfield and also the wingers in front of the fullbacks have not played with any intensity.
He is unlikely to change the system so it’s difficult to see how we will get a result.

It helps that the Cardiff stadium is in the City Centre, it's those soulless bowls on retail parks that have little going for them. The uniform way in which they are designed doesn't help, plonk yourself in St Mary's/Stoke/'Boro and you'll find it hard to distinguish which is which. The new Spurs ground has something different in that one end is a single tier, breaking up that sweep of seating that is so popular these days and this is something that should be done more often. The flourish of a gable, a grand tunnel or distinct end always helps a ground gain character, sponsored names don't help either. Ashburton Grove always sat well with the history and grandeur of Arsenal, likewise Eastlands sounds better than the rather parochial City Of Manchester Stadium.

Brentford are just better than us

That must be why they're flirting with relegation.

Let's not talk them up beyond what they. We took the "little cog that didn't matter" in Smith which proved he mattered a good deal. We're not going with a manager with shit for brains who will pair the slowest midfield in history like last time.

They're a poor side. Let's get back to what we can do and get back on course.

They're 11 points clear of relegation, and have massively improved of late.  Their defeat to Forest was their first loss in 10 games.

If they beat us tonight, they'll be four points behind us, with a game in hand, so careful about that relegation chat!

No I fully agree we've not been right. We're not our usual level of awful though that we've come to expect over these past 8 years.

We score plenty and we're very tough to beat, even when we're incredibly sporting.

Form changes. Friday was remarkable in a number of ways. They extreme lack of quality and the extreme turnaround.

What's clear is we're best at putting sides under. I hope we attack tonight, as they'll buckle.

Two years ago I got a puncture from a nitros oxide canister on the M40 on the way back. Last year it pissed it down.

Third time a charm.

Serves you right for tailgating Gabby on the way back.

The most telling factor on the outcome of this will be whether or not I fork out for a NowTV day pass.

I do; drab, lots of swearing, questionable result, we possibly do not win.
I don't; cavalier, comprehensive win to nil.

Was always the same for me, but I've bucked the trend by watching the rags, Boro away and last Friday's game on it.

I chortled at that too.

No beating "UTV,  The Doc" though.

I'm sat in the home section tonight with Olof's Beard of this parish. We're quite near the Villa fans though so I expect nothing but a shower of profanity rained in our direction, jibes at being tin-pot and given the wankers at every opportunity. Hope South Ealing (and Sexual Ealing) is prepared for such an awakening.

Sexual Ealing is fuming that, despite warning all and sundry that I'd be leaving work early, I was still in a cocking meeting twenty minutes ago. On my way now though. Expect to be given significant measurements of the bird.

Surely Hause will be at left back, not Mings?

In any case, oh Lordy!

The sun is shining, the Cider is cold and I’ve got a night off work. 5-0 Villa. Tammy x3, SJM and Taylor.

Maybe Hutts then not Taylor.
