I'd play Abraham wide, with Kodjia up front.

We need to be much more attack minded, now we have (hopefully) a better defence.
I love Albert but he really needs dropping, he's been dire.

No idea.
I think we have to raise our game against these so hopefully we do and it gives us kickstart.

I'm not expecting a Road to Damascus style turnaround here - simply because we have shown no hint since December. I hope I'm wrong. Think they'll nick it 1-2.

Only saw Adomah on the highlights but he looks shot.

Only sign of form out of him all season was v Birmingham, got injured after that and has been crap since. To be fair, I think all our attacking players have suffered, Abraham aside, since Grealish got injured.

Sheff Utd play three at the back so best to go with 2 up top for this and a lot more direct.

Would really love to see Davis in the middle with Tammy and Kodjia either side if him. El Ghazi and Albert have been poor and need dropping, Tammy needs support around him, so playing him off Davis, drifting in from the left may work as Davis is very good at holding up play. Something needs to change for us to start performing well again.

Could it be possible that Jack might be back?

Is Green still / always injured - if not then either him or Kodjia to replace Adomah

There is no way I would take Tammy out of the central role - it where he scores the goals from!!!!

                   Kalinic
Elmo    Elphick       Mings    Taylor

                    Carrol

El Ghazhi   McGinn   Hourihane  Kodjia
                   Tammy

bench

Steer
Hutton
Hause
Whelan
Jedinak
Davies
Adomah

2-0

Tammy x 1
Hourihane x 1

2-2 draw. Wilder is a good manager. He took Oxford back up into the league, won the League Two title with Northampton, the League One title with Sheffield United and has had them challenging in the top half of the Championship since then. His managerial record over the last five years is excellent.

There seems to be a growing number of supporters wanting to push Tammy out wide. I just don't get it! Keep him up front where he is most dangerous and the best in the league and get the others to fulfill their roles.

2 - 1 Villa. Better at the back and therefore we will nick it by one.

If we play like we have done since Christmas, we'll get beaten, so if ever there was a time to show an improvement, this is it.

Wilder has done a good job with what many would see as a journeyman squad and their average age over the season is older than ours, so it belies the theory that an older team can't be any good at this level.

They are a tough team to beat and their style usually does well against us (the Snodgrass game was a bit of a robbery win tbh).

Can't say I'm that confident, feels like another draw and we've really used up our quota of home draws already this season so will likely fall further off the pace.

1-1.

Agree. Its insane

I thought el ghazi was poor v reading but on reflection I think he created three great chances.

I'd stick with 4231. We've looked more solid.

Kodjia for Adomah. Maybe jedi for whelan. Dont fancy Carroll t o start yet

Pushing Abraham out wide when he is by far our best goal threat is like when Johan Cruyff made Gary Lineker play out wide for Barcelona.

Agreed.
Tammy in front of goal for me.

Let's beat these f**kers, and after the game I'm going to find the Northern tw*ts who I encountered on my way back to my car at Bramall Lane keen to rub my nose in it after the away game and reciprocate in kind....please

I've got for the win !
Heck, do we need it

I have an uneasy feeling Smith is going to deploy Carroll as some kind of 10 rather than a 6 or 8 .
Or at least try him out there at some point in this game.

It's uneasy as maybe Carroll best served as a 6 or 8.
Deeper lying.

Now the formation won't be too far from anything more than the regular 4-2-3-1 but my feeling is there could be a 4-4-1-1
Essentially a 5 strung across midfield with out the ball.

My fear then would be Tammy being isolated against the 3 centre backs.
I hope Smith has a plan against Sheffield United settled 3-5-2 system.
The thing with those blades under Wilder they have been consistently playing same football and shape so in that respect they are predictable
They do play some good football , have a style of play which is entertaining and down villa Park Friday could be in for a very decent match.

That's by the wayside as 3 points is a really needed and somehow someone to step up .

Along with Carroll , I'm intrigued by Jedinak role in last 16 matches.

Because the full backs give the width to Sheffield United and theh are used as a great strength in attacking maybe it will adomah and elmohamady as the wide midfielders.

Oli Norwood and Duffy are great examples of midfielders suitably playing a very effective game in their position.

Duffy can cause a lot of issues getting between lines more from intelligence position uptake and movement than and pace so it's important to have him monitored .
Also Norwood in a somewhat deeper role is a great example of a midfielder .

A key issue is matching that midfield and nullifying the full backs.

The play could be by Smith to have the wide players high up in a 4-3-3

I would like that in respects of taking game to Sheffield United but something like that could play into their hands.

Fascinating to see how this one does go.
Hoping Tammy to be difference he's the outstanding player

I got a good feeling about this - defence looked 100% better with TM and LK stepping in/up and we have performed better against the top teams than those below us.

2-0

We beat third-placed Sheffield United at Villa Park on Friday night then we can really start a run !

Title: Re: Aston Villa vs Sheffield United Pre-Match Thread

Abraham said it’s his favourite position, I’m confident he’d be just as dangerous.

He would have to do a little or maybe a lot more tracking back and defending.
Granted he makes supereme effort leading line as much as leading the first line of defence from the front and closing down.

For me it's a waste to have him coming back too often in own half when he needed as a presence up front.

Now a wide forward in a role without much defending I could take maybe this is your suggestion.

That would work ok. Still involved and dangerous and would get into box.
Same with Kodjia
If they just stayed up field a wide forward being just that

When I was a kid and still going with my dad we always dreaded games against this lot.  Always seemed to be poor games, we would lose 1-0 and an ex, Doc Pace, would come back to haunt us.

So on that basis 1-0 to them  Enda Stevens to score.

I still think he'd get goals drifting in from the left, just like Albert did last season, but i'd only play him on the left with Davis, not Kodjia, who'd lose it too much to bring others in.

Chester was clearly playing when injured and his form suffered, so taking him out of the side was important.

But has anyone heard how long he needs in terms of his knee injury? His form and that of the other options aside, I would be interested to know how soon before he might be, sensibly, considered for selection again.

The subtext being that Elphick worries the hell out of me. UTV.

Midfield too lightweight imo for this type of opposition, Sheffield United also like crossing into the box so I have a feeling Jedinak might be getting a rare start.

Shame Green is injured (again) as he's another I'd throw in and see how he looks after his loan, had enough fill of El  Ghazi to last a season.

Stuff it if Tammy fancies being a wide boy bring in Davis as central striker and have him and Kodj either side. Might not work but at least thinking outside the box a little bit more with the selection.

I'd give him a few weeks off personally, he's been way below the standard he's set last two seasons.

Keep same defence. It did keep a clean sheet at last so deserves chance to see if we can build on it against a much better team going forward than Reading.

My first game this season. Money has been very tight for us and as my mrs doesn't give a toss about football and is from a family of West Brom fans, it's been tough to convince her that Villa is a financial priority.

Please win, Villa. Though I can see a tight 1-2 loss, with their winner coming in the 87th.

I tend not to watch matches on tv or internet, so I think I'd settle for some signs that we're at least improving from the largely turgid Bruceball, which is all I remember seeing from us for what feels like about a decade.

But failing that, a scrappy 9-0 win will do!

Sheffield United most recent form in last 3 matches.
- beat lowly Bolton at home 2-0
-drew 2-2 away at Norwich (2-0 down)
-Lost and did not score away at Swansea 1-0

Last 5 championship matches  :WDLWW (3 wins)
10 points from 15 pts
(Include 6 matches and they lost 1-0 at home to barnet in fa cup)

Last 5 away - 2 wins in last 5.
DLWDW
Norwich 2-2 (2 nil down)
Swansea 1-0 defeat
Wigan 0-3 win
Ipswich 1-1 draw
Reading 2-0 win

Yes they are decent but hopefully the away results shows some optimism

Relatively to championship they are going well and in form .

The main thing is they don't have the winning form record of Norwich away from home or are on levels of hull or Bristol city recent winning form.

Yes, that's a pet peeve of mine too.  I can't stand that in-house reporter, and his inane sycophantic questions after games and in press conferences.  I know he's only doing his job and I understand why they do it, but still, I find it insulting to the intelligence of the fans.

"It's winter, all the games are under lights!"

Superb.

Can we not ask better and more insightful questions that what’s it like to play at Villa Park under the lights? FFS

Yeah, was a bit of a kids competition winners question. Something about a possible change of tactics and personel would be nice.

I was thinking exactly the same. The obvious questions about Hause & Carroll playing or progress. Terrible press conference ……..

Hope not as I'm unlikely to stick around for the comeback.
4-2 Villa in a controlled victory. 2-0, 2-1, 4-1, 4-2.

I reckon Nan's Hair would have been grateful for the gentle, inane questions from the in house bloke, but Smith has never really backed off from answering anything difficult, and I think he finds the questions as daft as we do, hence his "it's winter, all the games are under the lights" retort.

That's a real accident blackspot. So many accidents around the Keele services stretch, never really liked using it when going to uni up there.

Would honestly Trent vegas it. On a Sunday it would take just over half an hour to get from just north of Stafford to Newcastle Under Lyme so can't imagine it would be that much more late on a Friday evening.

I've just come back from Telford, left there at 10.45. The signs were already up on the M54 saying M6 closed 14-15. If they're working on it tomorrow night, you'll have to be proper on your toes after the game to beat it.

You have my sympathies for the trauma, and my congratulations on having left. I'm from Wellington. My dad died in a hospice in Telford seven years ago, leaving my severely disabled and demented mother behind. When I was on the M54 on the way to clear the shit from their home before my mum's move into residential care in the same village that my sister lives in (not in Telford), I promised myself that I'd never, ever use the M54 again. And I haven't. Truly, dreams can become real.

Like everyone else on here, desperate for 3 points. Based on our form against lower teams compared to their decent form/table position, it’s going to be a potential struggle though. On that basis just don’t like us being embarrassed on tv.

That whole stretch between 14 and 17 must have a higher incidence of accidents than anywhere else in the country.

The M6 does have more than any other motorway (not sure about that particular stretch though.

In terms of A-roads, the A38, between Birmingham and Staffs, had 8,698 accidents involving 13,153 vehicles between 2007 and 2016 - 360 more accidents than any other road in the UK.

Basically, all (dangerous) roads lead to Villa Park.

They're building (or may have already built) a new halls immediately on your left on the main entrance.

:D I  think he'll play this team and maybe the formation of 2 sitting midfielders

 Kalinic
Hutton
Elphick
Mings
Taylor

Carroll Whelan

McGinn

El Ghazi.  Adomah

Abraham

I prefer (for this match )
3 up front

Kalinic
Hutton
Elphick
Mings
Taylor

Jedinak Carroll

McGinn

Green   Abraham Kodjia

Either way drop Hourihane but no way would Smith make all those changes even with a game on Wednesday and then next week.
