I can't be arsed to complain about Whelan being in there again. He was decent last week too.

Me too. He wants three in midfield so of those available Whelan although generally crap is less crap than BB. I think Jedinak will be the better option but he’s coming off a long term injury, and once Jack is back Whelan will be on the bench.

Mine too, mate.

And the fact that Hutton is captain. And Taylor and Hourihane still seem beyond the axe.

He is making a rod for his own back is Smith.

Still, time to find a stream and cheer them on.

El Ghazi is being given a lot chances considering he’s been shite since his one good display at Smethick. I really think Kodja should be playing.
As for Whelan, best of a bad bunch between Jedincack and the moody bloke with a blonde. pony tail.

The fact that Taylor still commands a place despite a transfer window and the size of our squad pisses me off immeasurably.

Still, 3 points today is all that matters for now.

Still a lot better than Reading though.

Is Hause so poor that he isn't deemed a better option than Neil fucking Taylor? Taylor gives every right winger in the division a confidence boost

jesus, the guy's been here 3 months and he's supposed to have re-built the team already? I don't know what people were expecting in the transfer window but 6+ new players was perhaps a tad optimistic.

We signed five. And yet, looking at this team, we only addressed one problem position, maybe two with Kalinic.  No doubt about it for me, this is still a poor side. One or two bits of class but not enough of it yet.

Whelan played well last week. Hourihane can go missing but has still set up two and scored one in his last four starts, so it's not like he contributes nothing.

People seem determined to moan whatever team he picks. Smith isn't to blame for Grealish being injured.

Perhaps because he wouldn't last the whole match and will be brought on later in the game, if needed. He clearly wasn't match fit the last outing we witnessed - a practice match is not the Championship.

He did fine when he had a half decent XI to chose from. With injuries he's now down to turd polishing. I'd defy any manager to turn this squad into Barcelona. If you're not going to give him any time to put his stamp on the team then we might as well sack him now and bring in another promotion expert.

Not sure what else he could with the squad we have.

Put Mings at left back thereby continuing to play an injured Chester?
Rely on Hause who looked iffy defensively on his showings so far?
Put Hutton at LB and bring in that defensive colossus Elmo at RB (given Bree gone)?
I was disappointed with our window dealings too (esp the lack of a new DM) but you can't lay that all at Smiths door.

We should be putting these to the sword routinely - they're 22nd in the table, don't score many, tend to draw rather than win, and were pretty crap when we played them (and contrived to draw) in August. Not overly enthused with that line-up, especially Taylor in again, but I guess DS hasn't got many options. Roll on Jack coming back. Think we'll nick it 2-1

Seriously John, I’m not being sarcastic this time, but of the players available, who would you pick to be more swashbuckling ? The only one I would change is Kodjia - for all his faults I think he asks defences more questions than Albert ( of late) or El Ghazi.

Lets get behind Deano rather than all these comments .....
Its not his squad and you dont change it I'm one window
All the criticism of Whelan is unfair .... maybe its the unchain fans but what did he do wrong last week
One player who really needs to step up is Albert
This team should be good enough to win today

And that's his fault how? By definition if your getting players in on loan, its probably because they're not playing much 1st team football at their current clubs. If he's turning down premiership 1st teamers on loan then I agree, he's missing a trick

Exactly there’s a youthful policy in transfer window.... don’t keep complaining about the usual midfireld suspects. There is FFP to comply with too. Older guys and ripped up contracts be Leaving in summer they’ll back him further no matter which division we’re in.

Doesn't help when neither Whelan or Hourihane make themselves available for a pass when under the slightest bit of pressure. Might aswell get Whelan off at the break, not offering anything defensively.

Shite defending from Hutton to get on the wrong side in the first place though. You could see that situation coming 3-4 seconds before.

maybe, but he's still been awful. Taylor free kick half way up pitch = Reading goalscoring chance; not tight enough on crosser - more chances. Awful player. Surely Mings to LB once Chester fit?

It's just the same lethargic, slow, occasional hoof ball-type football again.

We reek of mediocrity. No cohesion to our play.

Big improvement needed second half.

It’s what Whelan does. And not just that I’ve said a million times the midfield plays so much deeper with him in it. Now it’s not like we are flush with options but I do hope Smith gets Carroll on so we can see what he’s capable of. He’s a tidier, more attacking player. But without Jack who drives the team forward we look so devoid of composure, ideas and creativity.

I don’t think he’s changed from that. But if the players in our midfield can’t keep possession or aren’t the type to force the play forwards then it’s not going to happen. McGinn simply cannot do it all on his own.

Losing faith with Smith.... All very well blaming the squad he's inherited, but Kodjia/Carroll not starting ahead of Whelan and co is bewildering (and not bringing em on till the 73rd minute in a dysfunctioning side?!).

Sort it out Villa FFS!
He does appear to have morphed into Bruce within a ridiculously short time.

Hopefully when Smith can build a team to suit his style we’ll have more of these positive comments.
