Does anyone know the story about this kit ?
It came up in conversation today, with Samir, who is organising the Henson 87 Kit purchases
Clearly the base kit is the 82/ Euopean Cup winning kit. That’s the easy bit. The badge , however, is on the left of the chest as opposed to the middle ( as in the home version of the Super Cup/ World Club final)
Then there’s the fact that Mita didn’t sponsor us until two seasons after the 82 winning kit ( Davenports were our first sponsor in 83)
The shorts are also those that went with the home shirt of the kits that replaced this one.
So why was Sid wearing that one, when there was a new one available ?
It seems to have some commemoration writing under the badge. Was there a one off game ?

Could it be from the centenary tournament? That's not even a guess, I'm just trying to think of something when we had Mita that could've involved a one off kit.
-
That should always be our away kit.
-
It is a thing of beauty.
-
‘84/‘85 season I think.
-
Can anyone else see the face in his shorts?

Now you mention it, yes.

That seems to be the 1984-1985 away top with the 1984-1985 home shorts. I think that season we had claret shorts and blue socks at home and white shirts and socks away with blue or white shorts depending on the opposition colours.
-
That’s the 81-82 away top without question
-
Can anyone else see the face in his shorts?
It’s the Turin Shorts- the face of our Lord. Repent all ye sinners.

Nah, we wore our home kit for the Juventus away game.
-
God bless Sid but I'm struggling to see the face on the face.

Badge was in the middle on the 81/82 season.

& looks like Champions of Europe underneath the badge too so its 82/83 , could it be a European away top ?
-
It's the 1982-83 away shirt because I can't think of any combination of words that would be the size of what's underneath the badge except Champions of Europe, and the Mita logo makes it after January 1984. It's definitely the 1983-84 home shorts. Sid was injured throughout that season. Which makes the entire thing a mystery.
And so we come to what me and the world's saddest man greatest anorak on matters Villa (my mate Greg) reckon:
It's not from a match. It's likely a promo photo featuring the logo of our new sponsor, a player who just happened to be around and training on his own and a few random bits of kit that Doug kept at the back of a cupboard "because they might come in handy one day".
-

Wow yes, spooky
-
The only shirt they had with the new sponsor, a bygone age, I miss it.
-
It was suggested on Facebook, and it kind of makes sense , that it was for a pre season game. The home kit for the following season had been released, but the away one ( the white with yellow hoops one) hadn’t. So although the previous kit ( Davenports ) had gone , the new sponsors needed to be seen that summer, even if the new away kit wasn’t ready
The really ridiculous thing was about three hours after posting the original post , I was within 10 ft from the man himself in Lichfield.
But he was with friends, so it didn’t seem right to pester him.
-
I’d go along with that as the picture is closely cropped and the setting seems empty behind. Still a lovely looking shirt.

It’s the away version of the 82/83 european shirt, which may not have ever been worn in a proper match. Didnt Sid break his leg in a pre-season game 83/84? It could be that match.
-
I knew that was Sid before I clicked and enlarged the image ( I suspect everyone else did as well ) . Not many players have that classy playing style on the ball.

The sponsors weren't announced until the following January.

The shirt was used in a game against Boca Juniors at the Nou Camp. No idea what this was for but it looks like a Villa hispsters wet dream!

Given what Dave says about Greg, I'd bow to his knowledge. He once told me that the replica shirt I had on wasn't a good one because the stripe on the top of the collar wasn't the right thickness.

Another top to throw in the mix, anybody shed any light to this one ?
-
Sorry, late to party on this one.
From the look of it, the sid photo is from pre-season training at VP 1984.
There are a few photos from it that made the cover of the programme, including the sid pic:

Its from the 1984-85 season, just without the Mita logo. Here's Mortimer wearing it in 85:

Why were we playing Boca Juniors at Barcelona and how did we get on?
-
Lost 2-0 and it was in this pre-season competition https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_Gamper_Trophy
-
Cheers, have found it now. We lost to Bayern in the semis, Boca lost 9-1 to Barca in their first game.
