Title: Wigan v Aston Villa: Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Ads on January 07, 2019, 07:37:29 PM
Time to bounce back. Awful display against Swansea and it sounds like Smith tore them a new one.

Wigan tend to start well, huff and puff for 15 minutes and then disappear.

Apparently if we score we won't lose according to the two season ticket holders I work with.

My team;

Kalinic

Taylor
Chester
Elpick
Hutton

Hourihane

McGinn
Landsbury

El Ghazi
Kodjia
Bolasie

Was popping up to this but a friend is going to the Doctors as his guts are playing up a fair bit so he understandbly dosen't fancy 90 minutes in the cold and can't drink much either while he gets a prognosis.

Anyway this is a must win to me otherwise we really will start to fall off the top 6 pace.

Thought Wigan looked a good team start to the season but they've really fallen off the cliff in last two months. Losing to Ipswich and at home 0-3 to SHA in last six weeks says it all.

0-1.

We should turn them over without too much drama.

In fairness we usually do fine up there. This fixture is an oddity like Boro at home, can never seem to win the home game but the away one is usually one of the more comfortable away wins of the season.

Well that rules out Glenn and Conor for selection.

In fact, it probably leaves a midfield of just McGinn

I think he also mentioned simply how hard both sets of players worked the point being if you want to be good you have to work at it.

One of my few abiding memories from that Godawful FA Cup Final v Arsenal was how hard their players were still chasing us and closing us down even when they were 3 up and wanting more!  Ba*tards!

Was all set for a proper session but Northern Rail have decided to continue with their Saturday strikes so  its the jam jar to Wigan and a couple of cricketer shandies instead. Watching us sober is something else.

Either we will win easily or a 1-1 draw and we end up on the back foot.

One plus point I wont have that rather long walk to the station to contend  with.

That's eerily reminiscent of Lamberts trip to Germany and ended up with Guzan passing the ball along the endline in the next game.

We don't have the players to play the high pressing game that he wants to play without the ball. I'd much prefer if Smith started focusing on more of a hybrid approach making the best use of the players he currently has, rather than enforcing an approach that simply won't and isn't working.

maybe not the technical side to it all,
but just being extra fit and pressing giving the opo no time on the ball, anyone can do that if they are fit enough

i always used to think that about Man Utd under Fergie
not only did they have the spending power to buy the best players, but Fergie had them chasing the ball down for 90 minutes as well,
every one of them fitter than any other team and willing to work their nuts off

you don't need to be great to do that, anyone can do it if they are willing and coached that way

You can tell Leeds don't really have the players to make their style of play work, as so often the final ball was lacking for them to score, but Bielsa still has them drilled to chase down every single ball.

PNE and QPR were supposed to be two of those “winnable” games.....it just doesn’t work out like that, as we know.
However, I hope the Swansea performance was a big wake up call for the club as a whole, and I think it may be following Deano’s comments this week.
I think the club will also have had a massive lift with the Tammy decision this week.

I am expecting a much better, energetic performance today and we will be too good for them and win, possibly 2-0.

We just HAVE to properly turn up today & put the recent rubbish behind us. Even with the injuries to key players: it's high time the usual suspects performed like their futures depended on it (which ultimately they will). No more hiding - and definitely no more excuses. Get it done.

1-3 Villa

Avit.

Only watched the 1st half of the West Ham Arsenal game, that was enough for me, but on that showing Arsenal are not going to finish in the top 6.
