Title: Boxing Day Pre-match Thread: Swansea v Aston Villa
Post by: Ads on December 24, 2018, 09:18:59 AM
Why do we fall down? So we can learn to pick ourselves up.

And that we must, as in as succinct a description as I can muster, yesterday was fucking mince.

But we must credit the quality of Stoke's midfield and the excellence of Leeds as playing a heavy part in our poor performances.

Swansea and Preston offer immediate succour of being nowhere near as good. But injuries to Grealish make it harder than it ought to be. First up Swansea;

If Taylor isn't fit, then we may have to hold our Nose with Elmo.

Nyland

Hutton
Chester
Bree
Elmo

BB
McGinn
O'Hare

Bolasie
Tammy
Kodjia

This is the start of the run. This is where we show our true potential. 3-0 villa and optimism restored. Tammy x 2 and Chester.

It's now looking like an easier run of games, but this being Villa, I'm not sure that really means anything.  We can honestly forget abut the top 2, and just need to strain every sinew to get into the top 6 and try to stay there.  Starting with Swansea.  They're not in a great run of form, and seem to have the same sort of defensive problems we do.  However, they always seem to score, so I'm going for 2-2, again.  I can't see anything really changing unless the defence does, and that can't happen until January.

I hadn't realised that this is on the tellybox!  We have no alternatives to that defence at the moment.  Attack is the best form of defence.

Traditionally, we don't do boxing days so another defeat is on the cards but who knows with this bunch of jokers ( Villa that is). Depends who turns up on the day.

We will have the firepower to score 2 or 3 in every game we play. Not every team will be Leeds or Albion or even Forest to score 2 or more against us as bad as our defence is. We are not going to be able to win too games with our current defence against the top sides with good attacking options but against the sides lower down we will have too much in my opinion. So while we might still conceded we should have more than enough to win this game, I'm going for 3-1 us.

Set up for a frustrating draw I Feel.

Swansea recently re-instated Dyer and Routledge in their team which has made a difference in the final third. It will be a much stronger first 11 than what we saw at VP when it was largely a bunch of kids. They'll have been taking note of yesterday.

Another problem is we put so much effort into yesterday, someone like McGinn must've covered miles all over the pitch so tough to get that going again three days later.

I would take a draw tbh and then hope for six points against Preston and QPR. That would still be a decent xmas.

I always think about Collymore scoring a great freekick against Spurs and us winning 4-1. I think Grayson scored too. Was it 1997? I was 15 and a very happy boy in the Holte End.

I think of the 3-0 Man United win, the 4-1 Collymore game and the 4-0 destruction of Everton where Baros got a couple, the first being a handball. 4-4 Vs Chelsea must be up there too though I didn't go to that.

Just don't fancy us winning. Swansea don't score many but they don't concede that many either. looking at the form Swansea are iffy at home while we are pretty average. With the injuries and our defence i'm tempted to go for a home win but will go by form. low score draw 1-1

The second half of the season starts here...

They’ve lost to Norwich and West Brom at home, and Derby away in recent weeks. If we are a genuine top 6 team then we need to be turning these over again.

1-3 Villa

yeah i know. Just decided to go by form, ignore the leeds game performance in my thinking, so both teams have picked up 6 points in the last 5 games, right next to each other in the table, Swansea home advantage vs them not being great at home etc... Plus i think we're due a goalless or low scoring draw instead of the usual 3-4

I remember 4-1 v Wet Spam back in the day. Stood on the Witton End in awe of the Holte when the balloons thing was at its peak. Deehan with a couple IIRC and thinking 1978. Someone will no doubt put me right failing which I’ll look it up later.

Swansea away is a game i never seem able to attend for lots of various reasons In fact i can only recall going there once That was December 27th 1971 in the 3rd Division  We won 2-1 with Graydon and Aitken scoring  I can not remember much about the game but i do remember all the aggro before and after the game  With our defence we need to score at least 3 to win so i would settle for a draw  Dyer and Routledge are decent wingers so i expect a few goals

Just found something I didn't know .....

It IS possible to record the game on Sky Q even though it's on red button - you navigate to the Sky sports football HD channel, press record on the Sheff Utd v Derby gane BUT a menu comes up and you can choose the Villa game instead.

Thought I'd post that in case it helps anyone but apologies if it's obvious and I'm just a cretin !

I hope not , but there is a chance that Deano could stick with majority again and like Bruce found out they’ll be knackered without enough recovery time. If so they’ll run through our midfield with ease

I'm hoping for us to show a positive reaction after Sunday's disappointment, but I fancy both rubbish defences will provide plenty festive generosity. This afternoon's encounter has 'Draw' dangling over it like the proverbial Sword o' Damocles IMO, so I won't be in the least bit surprised if it ends up with a few goals & a final score of 2-each.

The one thing we need to address urgently as a club is that teams will know no lead we might have is safe. It’s great that it works in our favour that no deficit we find ourselves in safe but teams tend not to go up when they concede twice a game.

We appeared to be doing ok for a bit when we went to Derby and Boro and got clean sheets. Injuries have just killed us. Dean needs to consider being tactically less expansive in his approach also with the players he has and brave enough to play younger players who have more energy than some of our older pros who look careless and knackered at times.

It’s not just injuries that have killed us it’s injuries to probably the two most important players

if you asked fans which two players would you least like to get injured at the same time i reckon those two would top the poll

that’s proper bad luck that is
(And also that we have a very average/rubbish squad in a midfield and defence)

True John. Of all the players Grealish and AT are in the top 3 with Abraham or McGinn the other. Despite the way the Albion game ended we were building some great momentum then we lose Jack. Losing AT right before Leeds has to be crushing for Dean’s preparations. And I’ve been mildly critical of him but inportant to point out that our manager is still learning the job and what he has without even having a transfer window. It will improve.
