Solid. I see he went for Kodjia over Bolasie in the end down the left replacing Albert.

Win please Villa. Broadly happy with that team, although I’d prefer to have Bree in the squad, is he injured?

Worrying Bolasie cannot get himself fit, especially the amount invested in him.

4 2 3 1 ?

Pretty much what I thought it would be apart from Koj for Bolasie

As good  as it gets, at the moment.

Probably the best starting line up available given that Albert is injured. I still worry about persisting with Taylor but not many options to change it tonight

Not a lot of width there.  I can see Kodjia and Abraham cancelling each other out.

I'm in the bar of a theatre, which has a sign on the door saying it won't admit people in football colours, and some (Villa) twat has just been trying to get some songs going. It isn't me, btw.

We will not start winning games until the young players are brought into the side.  That team and bench is too full of players that have failed time and time again to deliver.

Think it will be the same formation as against Swansea last weekend...which looked like 4141 to me with Barney conducting things. We just need to be more clinical in front of goal so hopefully they'll have been practising finishing this week.

It was 2-0.

Quote
Four defeats in six matches straddling the New Year saw Rangers slip from top of the table to fifth, but a 2–0 win at Aston Villa in late January set in motion an extraordinary run of 11 wins and a draw that pushed them right back into contention for the League title.

If Elmohamady has to play id much rather it was right back and not right wing. Seems such a waste of an attacking position.

How long does it take for Bolaise to get himself fit? Hes had what 2 or so months now to do it surely he should be ready by now.

The defence look scared of the keeper, the keeper looks scared of the defence, the midfield look scared to play a through ball to the strikers, and the strikers seem scared to shoot, other than Kodjia, who is scared to give the ball to a team mate rather than try to beat 6 men himself.

Kodjia is useless out on the left and it's plainly obvious he is sulking that he is not the focal point in the side. Pre-game, Tammy was asked what he thought was his best position, to which he replied ''out on the left'' so why don't they alternate positions?

Taylor is also worse than crap. Put Hutton to left back, Elmo to right back and Bolaise out on the right wing.

We can still win this.

We are far,far too ponderous and deliberate around the box which means we are constantly trying to play through their whole team.
We have got to draw their back line further out and then be quicker.

It's because we don't have any plans or patterns that the players are familiar with, to create chances.  Every time we get the ball in the attacking third, the player in possession has to wait and see if someone will make a run, create space for him etc.  Other teams have plans, they know when the ball gets to a certain place, player X will move here, player Y will move there and so on, and they can play the ball much faster.  This alone is where hopefully Smith can improve us, as Brentford were a team that seemed to know what they were doing and had plans to create chances (fingers crossed that wasn't all down to their analytics software).  Also, even if we had plans we also have a couple of loose cannons in Grealish and Kodjia, which is fine, but you need other players who can anticipate the unexpected so to speak and most of our players lack football brains - McGinn excepted.

Hard to tell if that was Taylor not telling Chester to pick up the runner, or Chester just being shit again. Either way we are giving the ball away too cheaply and many times in situations where we are not under any pressure. McGinn strangely seems to be struggling too. Don't see a problem with bringing Whelan on for BB. We need to move the ball and the players much more quickly to break through - it's not as if QPR have a world-beating defense.

Chester was more at fault. No pressure on the ball so should have dropped off and given himself a yard or two. Little or no communication between the pair of them but Chester was in no man's land.

Grealish and McGinn were outstanding up to then. Lot of decent performances around the pitch, Abraham aside who has been hopeless. Bolasie for Abraham at half time and put Kodjia down the middle. Been an enjoyable game so far. Lot better shape about us but could see a few struggle with the pace of it later on.

Geoff Cameron would have been a solid loan signing for us...

Taylor stands still and points at the goalscorer as if to say "someone else's problem".  There are two issues with this:

1 - he had no one else to mark, so why's he giving his man up;
2 - a 10 year old defender knows to worry about the danger man first, and then worry about the winger after.  Given that guy was the winger and was clearly going in on goal Taylor should have tracked him.

I don't doubt Chester could've been deeper but he hasn't got eyes in the back of his head.  That was Taylor's man and Taylor's fault.

We barely create great chances, we rarely shoot and have stopped scoring goals.

I mean, you wouldn't throw all of them in. But O'Hare should absolutely be in the mix. Clark should be recalled and thrown in there. No reason not to at this point.

The goals we're conceding this season are so cheap. Teams aren't even working that hard to score against us.

Would help if we had a functioning attack but we don't so always going to be a struggle to win particularly away from home where the opposition attack more than they do when we come to VP.

Got a depressing feeling of 1-0 defeat now. Hopefully we can battle to a point and then beat Bolton and things look a bit better.

Chester, Taylor and Nyland all could and should have done better for their goal. Nyland was like a rabbit stuck in the headlights and didn't know whether to stick or twist so did something in between. We could also be down to ten men.

We don’t have one player with any real pace who can beat a man, or men and create something. Think Tony Morley

Tony Morley played for a team that competed in and conquered Europe. That is light years away from a team in the bottom half of the 2nd Division.

McGinn, a Scottish player most of us hadn't heard of this time last year, is making the rest of our expensive and experienced lot look like Sunday league players. It will never cease to infuriate me how these people end up earning fortunes at the expense of our club. Thank God for John and Jack having a bit of actual footballing ability - they might manage to keep us up this season.

That's the thing though, by the standards of this division, they're not.  It's just that we're absolutely dominating them, despite not scoring.

This just reinforces my view that if we can click quickly we've got everything needed to tonk this division.  Like Fulham found last year though, if you leave it too long it's impossible to catch the top 2.

They'll get a player sent off just when it's too late to make any fucking difference.

And that was pish, Yanick.

Yannick Bolasie: for those moments when you really couldn't give a shit how the game ends.

Weekend potentially ruined on a Friday night rather than a Saturday afternoon - thank you SKY and Aston Villa - I wish I didn't care so much :(

Same time same place next week? (wink)

You can already see the Smith influence though, the lack of hoof all has been noticeable. Jesus our crossing has been poor though. These are the games that promotion candidates win though.

How often does Bolasie fall over ?? He has a bizarre habit of falling backwards as he receives the ball!
Great ball in, though!
Followed by a truly awful one!!

Have to say, Whelan has been shite since he came on: giving the ball away, ponderous and too many fouls conceded.
He adds nothing.

His only role is if we're winning with five minutes left and he can come on and close things out. I thought he was an underrated player at Stoke but looks like we just signed him past his best.

I suppose a positive at least is him and Jedinak are out of contract end of season so Dean will have some scope to remould the midfield into the passing and mobile style he wants to play.

yep we're sort of half bruce half smith. got the possession bit right, can't score for toffee.

I don’t think that’s fair.
We just aren’t direct enough from 30 yards out

True, but I think that we'd benefit from trying something different if BB is not available, perhaps involving Doyle-Hayes or one of the other kids.

I've been thinking that refs should have the power to book or send off players based on the singling out of opposition players, ie the repeated fouling of Grealish.

Back on topic, the result has been nailed on for ages. We've no cutting edge.
