Title: Villa Park
Post by: Holte132 on September 15, 2018, 02:27:32 PM
After all these years supporting the Villa it has just occurred to me for the very first time that we are, I think, the only club in the top four divisions at least, whose name is in the name of the ground they play at. My other half suggested Notts County as they play at the County Ground, but the County part of their name could refer to other clubs too.

Of course - sorry. Shows what my other half knows about football!

I know it's sponsored now but does Man City's ground still go by the City of Manchester stadium?

City of Manchester Stadium, Sunderland Stadium of Light, Cardiff City Stadium, Stadium mk, University of Bolton Stadium, Vale Park, Alexandra Stadium.

Could make a case for Field Mill.

Brentford Community Stadium is under construction.

Barnstoneworth play at Barnstoneworth Football Ground.  They fought off attempts to re name it Davitt Stadium.  See Football Stories.  Producer Holte Lower RR 113.

Man City play at the Etihad Stadium, Sunderland's ground is just Stadium of Light, Bolton play at the Macron Stadium. I'll give you Cardiff City and Port Vale. County Ground is not specific enough as it doesn't say which county is meant. Alexandra Stadium? Do you mean Crewe Alexandra? They play at Gresty Road.

I edited out County Ground. Bolton is no longer the Macron Stadium, it's the University of Bolton Stadium. Gresty Road is officially Alexandra Stadium. I may be wrong about Sunderland, I've always called it that. Man City can be known by either name, like Celtic Park/Parkhead.

Port Vale play at Vale Park.

Does the place Port Vale actually exist?  Isn't it just a small borough in Stoke?

Quote
The official story reported on the club website is that Port Vale F.C. was formed in 1876, following a meeting at Port Vale House, from where the club was supposed to have taken its name. However documented evidence of football from that era is extremely scarce and comprehensive research by historian Jeff Kent indicated that it was probably formed in 1879 as an offshoot of Porthill Victoria F.C. and took its name from the valley of canal ports where the team played.

It’s in Burslem (which is a lot nicer than Stoke city centre). Think they were called Burslem Port Vale back in the day.
