Five defenders against a League 1 team. Sums Bruce up - try not to lose rather than take it to the opposition and try to win.

The  Burton Albion chairman has just been on Midlands Today reminiscing fondly about how much they enjoyed beating Aston Villa when they were in the Championship, which is pretty impressive seeing as how we have never lost to them.

Maybe he said meeting not beating but more likely he's stupid and he's getting us mixed up with another Birmingham team who they beat regularly.

He's using the sha 'logic' of a draw being as good as a win.

Not a lot of attacking options from the bench, or the first XI.

Still, I’m sure we’ll be ok

Only one striker in the whole match squad??

Grealish and Kodjia came on last round and nearly scored and made a goal respectively. We won't need that this round though against a team from a higher division?

A pretty uneventful opening 15 minutes, with neither side registering an effort on goal. Tuanzebe has assumed a holding midfield role in front of De Laet, Elphick, Bree and Taylor. El Ghazi, Adomah and RHM operating as a front three.

So even they are so confused they are forgotten Lansbury and Hourihane, presumably in front of Tuanzebe. So 4-1-2-3?

To be honest given the schedule we’ve had and the status of this cup, I think that’s a pretty sensible line up.  Would have preferred to see Axel at centre back, but valuable game time for most these players.  They need to show us they have the desire and quality to push for a 1st Xi place.

No goals yet as we reach the break. Villa looking most threatening down the right-hand side through De Laet and Adomah as the game has gone on. Tuanzebe, Taylor and El Ghazi all solid. More cutting edge needed in the second half.

It might be if players were being played in their positions and others had some prospect of getting in the team in anything other than an emergency, for example given we have multiple options at holding mid, why do we need to try Tuanzebe in there? Other than to tip Mourinho over the edge.

From Chrisw1
To be honest given the schedule we’ve had and the status of this cup, I think that’s a pretty sensible line up.  Would have preferred to see Axel at centre back, but valuable game time for most these players.  They need to show us they have the desire and quality to push for a 1st Xi place.

It might be if players were being played in their positions and others had some prospect of getting in the team in anything other than an emergency, for example given we have multiple options at holding mid, why do we need to try Tuanzebe in there? Other than to tip Mourinho over the edge.
[/quote]
As I said I’d prefer to see him at centre back but I don’t see any harm in having a look at him at holding midfield given as it’s a position it’s been suggested he can play.

The reality is there should be enough quality in that line up to make a decent fist of it and the players need to pull their fingers out and do what they are paid to do.

nice to see what Axel can do at CB instead of DM when we already have thor, Jedi and wheman to play there all season

I think we need more pace in midfield, let's move Whelan to centre back - that's where I see his future.

I can't help feeling he's playing Axel as DM because he's determined to favour Jedi at CB regardless of ability, hence why he won't test Axel there just in case he's better in that position

I am surprised the Dogheads are playing in this cup completion.
I’d have thought they’d give it a swerve ready to go straight into the knockout stages of the champions league so that can win that.

Either take it seriously (which I wouldn't) or play the full junior team - with said manager.

This benefits nobody.

Even if we (he) has not prioritised this competition, why not try and learn something from it.

A new formation and more players played out of position means we don't even get that. Never mind the prospect of gaining confidence from a clean sheet and a few goals for the strikers!

Nothing is served by his approach to this match - other than he edges closer to the exit, maybe that is the grand plan?

We've stopped winning in the league now so surely going out of this cup isn't going to impress the new owners.

Fair enough not starting likes of Kodjia and McGinn but at least put them on the bench.

Crazy, as far as i'm concerned his duty is to go out and win every game regardless, with maximum effort, to believe he as some grandiose plan to rest players from competition in order to save them for the ultimate goal of promotion is just tosh, it's not going to happen, getting way above his station, win every game, that's it.
