Title: Ipswich Town vs Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Toronto Villa on August 15, 2018, 09:24:28 PM

Team I’d like to see

Nyland
RDL
Hutton
Chester
Tuanzebe
Bjarnason
McGinn
Elmohamady
Green
Grealish
Kodjia

Subs:

RHM
Moreira
Hourihane
Jedinak
Elphick

My first trip to Portman Road was SGT's first game in charge. They have drawn at home to Blackburn, lost away to Rotherham and been knocked out of the cup on penalties by Exeter. Even under their new manager i think they will struggle this season. They have been treading water in the Championship for some time now. I had them as one of the three teams to go down (along with Rotherham and QPR) in my pre season predictor. We should be capable of winning this one even given the unpredictability of this league.

I would hope we are a lot more balanced and organised defensively than we were against Wigan and to a lesser extent at Hull.

Nyland

Taylor
Chester
Axel
Hutton

Jedinak

Albert
McGinn
Grealish
Green

Kodjia

I still really want to see us try with Kodjia and Green both playing as wide strikers and Grealish in the hole (gif incoming) with McGinn and 2 from Thor/Hourihane/Jedinak in behind him.  I genuinely believe it would bring the best out of the front 3 without sacrificing anything in midfield and defence.  I could mean we'd end up quite narrow but that's all about making sure Kodjia and Green are holding to those wider positions until we get into the final 3rd. I think Adomah and RHM would be better in those attacking roles as well but we don't have any like for like cover for Grealish, McGinn moving forward would probably be the best option if needed.

I'd keep Thor in there. I know he didn't have a great game against Wigan but i'd like to see him have a run at some point and he has a goal in him.

Nyland

Elmo
Chester
Axel F or Elphick
Hutton

Thor
McGinn
Grealish

Green
Kodjia
Albert

I wish I shared your optimism regarding us being a free scoring side this year. A potential lack of goals is a concern of mine.

Looks about right. Since Mick McCarthy left Ipswich have been trying to play the ball on the floor so no real need for Jedi. The other reason is Thor suits and will support more our attacking strengths.

Hoping Kodjia playing a key role in winning the game Tuesday night will be the boost he needs to get back to goalscoring form in this one. Despite being short on confidence of late and missing the great headed chance I actually thought second half he put in the yards v Wigan and didn't sulk. Tuanzebe and Chester must be our #1 CB partnership for the season when fit, their skillsets compliment one another well and if all goes to plan they could be our first choice two for some time.

I don't see any reason to make any changes from last week other than RDL in at right back and Jedinak on the bench so Axel can slot in to his natural position.

I'd go for Clampys team with Axel at CB, think he needs a run of games there now, probably less error prone than Elphick.

I'm not sure we're relying on them, we've only played three games. They've just happen to have been the one's who have got the goals.

Axel at CB please

I wonder whether Bruce will try and get hourihane McGinn and grealish all in the same side. Given our wide players have disappointed it must be tempting to take one of them out. Perhaps grealish nominally left of a front three as Risso suggested

But there's an obvious counter argument that we want grealish to be right at the heart of the team

I think the point is though that out of 6 league goals four are from defenders, one from a defensive midfielder and one from an own goal.  Those are unlikely to prove a consistent source of goals, so maybe it is something to be slightly concerned about, especially with Kodija and Albert both being out of form.

This is a game that we should be expecting to win, therefore a banana skin. Hopefully we keen the goalscoring coming but play a bit better collectively as they all get to know one another.   Nyland, RDL, Chester, Axel, Cafu, Jedinak, McGinn, Grealish, Elmo, Adomah and Kodjia.

We should win this.

Ipswich seemed to have adopted our Lambert policy.

Getting rid of all their big earners and replacing them with loads of players from league 1 and 2.

So far they've played two of the promoted teams and have 1 point and that was a last minute equaliser.

1-2 win.

Yep, this has been good fun the last couple of years. Ian Taylor was in there last year.
Worth noting that absolutely nowhere we went last year took cards - load up with cash, as contactless is still years away from reaching Suffolk.

I watched their manager's press conference yesterday, he's not a happy bunny after their defeat to Exeter in the cup and is hoping to get a response from his team. At the same time he really fears us. An early Villa goal and I think they'll collapse. That's assuming we don't sit back and try and defend the lead. It's ours to lose. The fixtures have been very kind to us this month, we really need to take full advantage.

Also signed Janoi Donancien from Accrington a  week ago so he'll be playing v us in central defence.

Last season they had Garner and Waghorn in good form upfront.

Both gone and replaced by Ellis Harrison (Bristol Rovers) and Kayden Jackson (also Accrington). He also had a season at Tamworth in 14-15 (Dave Cooper spotters Badge).

Decent chance for our first league clean sheet here.

They're all really confident here!

Am really annoyed as I thought I had a ticket for this one but it has fallen through. It's a relatively easy train journey from London too. If anybody hears of a last minute spare please let me know.

Hope we keep our momentum going - we have started badly the last 2 seasons and need to maintain our winning start this year. The fixture list has also been relatively gentle on us too.

The formation certainly suits us especially away from home.

Would make us a bit narrower/tighter in centre and also carry more of goal threat.

Plenty of squad rotation options too without changing the system when it comes to midweek.

I go for Hourihane over Green at Ipswich - gives him a bit of time to get over Yeovil then bring him back midweek.

On checking the records, yes alright I know I'm sad, 1930 was the last time we won our first 4 games, so, stating the obvious, history is against, plus despite the results, the performances have not been great, so I'm going for a draw 1-1, forever pessimistic.

well we've been far from convincing so far despite the 2 wins. either we're gonna gradually improve performance wise and tighten up the defence or someone is going to punish us. Haven't got a scoobie what to predict except Ipswich were probably The average championship side last season so a win or a draw away to them is going to be what we need to be in the mix.

You are spot on with saying they were the average Championship side last season. They finished bang in the middle in twelfth place. I must admit I thought they had finished lower than that.

I'd love to think our winning run will continue today, however, I've got a feeling that we'll end up with a less-than-juicy point. Ipswich don't look like they'll be pulling (ploughing?) up any trees any time soon, but our defensive shortcomings will eventually cost us big-time if they ain't sorted: and today could be just the day mistakes will do for us. Here's hoping what I've just offered is a complete load of ol' bollards - & we give those big-eared simpletons a right good hammering.

well we've been far from convincing so far despite the 2 wins. either we're gonna gradually improve performance wise and tighten up the defence or someone is going to punish us. Haven't got a scoobie what to predict except Ipswich were probably The average championship side last season so a win or a draw away to them is going to be what we need to be in the mix.

You are spot on with saying they were the average Championship side last season. They finished bang in the middle in twelfth place. I must admit I thought they had finished lower than that.

yeah there's a couple of teams who you look at and think "well they're not going to do anything other than maybe flirt a few times with the play-offs or the lower half of the table. Ipswich are gonna be steady at home and pretty duff on their travels so its the sort of game we have to pick up something from to sustain a challenge. Norwich are another one.

I was watching the thing on youtube about our championship winning year the other day.  Some of the players still seem embittered by the Ipswich players behaviour in our tunnel after they beat us late that season, thinking they'd won the title in doing so.  Funny how that stuff sticks.

Can someone suggest which radio stations are favourite for keeping alive to how the game goes?

Expect to win this one think Ipswich will be right down there this season.  But have a feeling it will end 1-1.  Jack to get ours.

Jedinak at centre half....

I know he's playing but he is conceivably playing in front of Elmo, 2anzaB, Chester and Hutton.
