Minutes on the pitch or pick your strongest side? Not likely to go with the same side as we play against Hull, if there are signings on their way, or, gulp, sales! Can Moriera play?
-
Well if it was me it would be :
Moriera
Chester
Elphick
Hutton
Elmo
Jedi
Hourihane
Grealish
RDL
Green
Kodjia
-
Oh and subs - Steer Bree Whelan Barney Lansbury Adomah Davis
-
Oh and subs - Steer Bree Whelan Barney Lansbury Adomah Davis
I might be wrong about this but I think Davis is with the u23's at the moment.
-
That's odd then as obviuosly something has gone wrong there
-
Steer, Hutton, Chester, Jedinak, Taylor, Elmohamady, Bjarnason, Whelan, Grealish, Green, Adomah.
Subs: Sarkic, Gardner, Bree, Elphick, De Laat, Lansbury, Hourihane, Knibbs, Sarkic.
No Kodjia, Taylor again at LB who is utterly bollocks. Looks like Albert up front, Jedinak at the back with Chester. Why, when Hutton played so well at LB last season isn’t he playing him there with De Laat at RB?
-
What's happened to Kodjia? If he's injured we are fucked.
-
And fucking Whelan.
-
That looks like a 4-6-0 formation. Bruce is just so inivative!!
-
Welcome to the new Steve Bruce era. The same as the last shit one
-
What's happened to Kodjia? If he's injured we are fucked.
I think he took a knock at Walsall, I remember him going down but he did get back up. Maybe he didn't want to risk him.
-
What time is the kick off? It says 2pm on Legion's link but a few people on Twitter are saying 1pm.

2pm local, 1pm UK time. Possibly.

That would be far too sensible, you realise we are talking about Bruce here and sense goes out the window!

Bit misleading really then. It says 'head over to You Tube after 2pm' so whoever does will miss the first half.
-
It’s not even on the OS to give clear instructions when the game starts. This is what happens when you have to fire people for being skint and basic communication services no longer exist.
-
Yes on youtube at 1pm uk time
-
Ok now OS confirming kick of is at 1.05 pm UK.

They're just assuming that'll be our bad half.
-

Nah it's not. He's been watching the World Cup. It's actually 3-2-5-0.
-
No idea what formation he's trying there !
-
Is that a ‘safe’ team selection or just a fucking lazy one?
-
I think it's a 3 5 2 on reflection but Taylor and Whelan no thanks
-
It’s absolutely childish and frankly pathetic of Bruce not to try and reintegrate McCormack into the squad. He’s a forward with a proven track record. He won’t play him. He can’t sell him. Just mind numbingly stubborn and stupid.

We don't know what's going on there though do we? It looks strange from the outside but there might be other things going on we don't know about.
-
Well that’s Bruce’s much vaunted experience for you.
-
The new keeper is starting just seen him about to kick off
-
No names on the back of our shirts. Is this a thing?
-
Always until squad numbers are confirmed.
-

He sent him away on loan where overall RM did well. He comes back fit and isn’t even given a sniff. I absolutely get RM started all of this. But at what point do you put that aside and get him to contribute again. We can’t buy players, we need to reduce the wage bill, we paid a stupid amount of money for him. Using him in some capacity given our current situation surely makes sense.
-
Apparently it is Steer in goal he now has a beard

I agree.
We are paying him a fortune. At least TRY and reintegrate him.
What exactly have we got to lose?
-
Always until squad numbers are confirmed.
Ta.
-
Just started watching this on YouTube - no striker?!
-
We're way more exciting in German!
-
Dresden look a lot better than us so far. Better movement. We look dreadful at the back trying to incorporate/force a CM and RB into a three man CB formation.
-
We do miss Snoddy down the right.
-
Their pitch is in a bit of a state.
-
Being schooled by Dresden's passing and movement right now. We look devoid of fresh ideas from the bench and on the pitch, it's like nothing has changed from last year. Oh wait...
-
The average age of our starting line up has to be pushing 30. And we look it
-
It seems like the new tactic from Bruce is to see how ,amy he can play out of their natural position ........
If we are short of a forward then Ross Mc should be playing not sat at home .....you cant blame him for picking his wages up if the manager wont give him a chance
-
It's infuriating how when we play any side whatsoever with a semblance of confidence, quick movement and decent passing we just immediately retreat into our shell, start lumping it long and stop moving ourselves.
-
What a keeper!
-
Quality goal keeping by Steer
-
What a fucking disaster. 1-0 Dresden
Clown goalkeeping by Steer
-
The average age of our starting line up has to be pushing 30. And we look it
Yep, and I thought that was a feature of the play off final too.
-
oh my god.
-
Losing 1 0
-
I think we have a new calamity for a keeper
-
Oh shit. Howler from our goalie.
-
Marvellous goal.
-
Great defending ...NOT
-
Fuck
-
I've seen some dodgy keeping but that just about tops the lot
-
I think we have a new calamity for a keeper
Jed from Alan Partridge in goal today.
-
I want to be excited about the new season. But I’m just not. And take Jack out of this line up; fuck me what does it even look like? A prehistoric manager, prehistoric tactics, left with prehistoric players.
-
I posted during our first friendly against Telford that it was obvious from something Steer did that we desperately need a new keeper, that just confirms my belief.
Also, it's evident Bruce didn't attend too many coaching seminars during the closed season.
-

I was about to say - if Jack goes, this team has absolutely nothing. nothing.
-
You stop Grealish, you stop Villa. Simple as that.
-
so that's Levy's plan...
-
Save.
-
Good save there.
-
Good save from Steer.
-
When did Enkelman return ?
-
I know he loves the club and fans but Jack needs to leave for his own good.
-
Our patterns of play are just so predictable. It must be so easy to defend against.
-
Fuck another calamity at the back. They should be 2-0 up
-
Close. Nearly 2-0
-
Other than flashes from Jack, there is just so little drive or urgency or passion or involvement from our midfield.
There are all just so fucking non descript.
-
I long for the end of Bruceball.
Henry wasn't the answer for me, but there has to be something better than this.
-
Looks like he's swapped Albert and Andre over. So a different wide player up front. That's bound to work. Wonder if it's crossed his mind to play a striker up front
-
Fuck me, so pedestrian. I bet Hull cannot wait to tear us a new one in the first game.I'm 58 and I reckon I can move faster than Whelan and Jedinak.
-
HT well that was fucking dull and uninspiring. Roll on the season.
-
45 mins of huffing and puffing and a total lack of any coherent football.
-
Whelen is crap. Created the opening at the back for their chance, slow, wrong positions. I don't get how he is rated by Bruce
-
Half time. Well, any optimism that might have been rekindled post-takeover has been well and truly extinguished. Considering we probably won't be able to see the benefits of that (if any) until January at the very earliest this is going to be a loooong season
-
I'll never get that time back.
-
I can see Bruce again refusing to use more of the younger players. We are so slowly and deliberate. It gives opponents time to adjust and defend in numbers and then hit us on the break where we look like 18 wheelers turning.
-
Not impressive at all. I know it's only a friendly etc etc but we seem a very long way off the standard we'll need to be if we're thinking about doing well this season. Dresden better than us in all departments, and more energetic too.
-
It's looking very much like we are going to have our arses handed to us on more than one occasion this coming season. I hate Bruce's idea of football.
-

He doesn't seem to have any ideas.

You wasn't wrong.
-
Come on now. If Bruce gets sacked tomorrow i will throw a party but its a pre-season friendly not the play-off final. It's about getting match fit, no more no less
-
My summary at half time. Without Grealish we have zilch creativity, Whelan only has niggle, nothing else, absolute shite. Thor runs around but has no creativity, our wingers are thick as fuck, Green always on his heels and crap at crossing. A week before the season starts and we still have no settled formation. What the fuck was Steer doing? Just hoof it. Cheating lino when Adomah was clearly onside. It's shit, yet again. We can only be better in the second half, surely.
-
Does ‘stabilty’ have to equate to ‘fucking boring’ ?
-
Come on now. If Bruce gets sacked tomorrow i will throw a party but its a pre-season friendly not the play-off final. It's about getting match fit, no more no less
Not that old chestnut?
It’s also a time to try new things, look a different players and give some youngsters a chance to stake their claim.
Maybe we just haven’t got any players coming through who are good enough to displace the plodders?
-
Why are we playing Grealish? We all know he's going so we won't see the benefit of playing him pre-season and we need to be looking at how we're going to playing without him this season.
What if he gets injured? I don't get it.
Haven't seen much of the first half but not impressed with us. Dresden look much sharper in all areas.
-
Come on now. If Bruce gets sacked tomorrow i will throw a party but its a pre-season friendly not the play-off final. It's about getting match fit, no more no less
It's our last pre-season friendly though isn't it? And with just over a week to go, I think Bruce will be looking for more than just match fitness.
-
Other than Kodjia, is there another player likely to come in who we are missing? Other than Hourihane? Don't say Hogan. We really are in need of signings. If Grealish leaves, we will do well to finish half way up the table, especially if Kodjia has a poor season.
-
Judging by all I've seen pre-season, I think we have to train our eyes towards looking at the bottom of the league table again. This is just pure rubbish, no guile, no incisiveness nothing. I'm very worried.
-

Yep. Missed the first half but doesn't look like I missed much.
-
That was utter dog shit. Pedestrian in defence. Players out of position. Players aimlessly wandering around like they're shopping at the fort with their Mrs. I don't care if its a friendly. There should be some sort of shape to our game. This is bruceball at its moronic worst.
-
Come on now. If Bruce gets sacked tomorrow i will throw a party but its a pre-season friendly not the play-off final. It's about getting match fit, no more no less
Does that equate to just jogging around then?
-
We have manager with less tactical ability of 10 year old rugby fan. But the best bit is we have kept him for a ANOTHER SEASON.
We yet again have new stupid owners.
-
By the last game of the pre season Bruce should have settled on a playing style and formation. He’s been insisting on this 3-5-2 which just isn’t working, and today it’s 3-7-0. Albert isn’t a forward. He’s drifting out wide which is what he does naturally. It’s dull.

We look like we are playing 4-5-1. We don't like like we are playing three at the back? Chester and Jedinak are the centre backs.
-
Nice run by Jack to get a freekick, subsequently blazed over by Albert
-

On the plus side I really don't think he'll last the season unless we're smashing the league by Christmas.

take this shit into the season and he's out by the beginning of October

We are taking this shit into the season and I want him gone by September.
-
Now they’re starting to give Jack a kicking

If it's only a couple of wins by the end of September, he'll be gone.
-
The referee is very poor. How many times has Grealish got to be dumped on his arse before he books someone for doing it?
-
Grealish seems to have took the position of pantomime villain at the moment.
-
Now they’re starting to give Jack a kicking
I think that was just mild payback for some equally mild handbags by the corner flag. He's getting the pantomime booing too.
-
They're even kicking Jack on the edge of our own area now
-
And again.
-
I hope to god this isn't the formation or team for Hull. Like many Im really not looking forward to another season of backward thinking defensive football.
-

i've seen clubs mullah their pre-season opposition and get relegated. likewise i've seen teams do awful and have a decent season. one of 'em
-
Knocked out of the cup by West Ham and Europe in the space of a few days. Bruce out.
-
I’d like to take that bugle and shove it...
-
That c**t with the trumpet is more entertaining than the Villa.
-
Nice work by Elmo, decent cross with no striker in the middle. Ace
-
I don';t know much about German football. Where do Dresden figure?
-
We have 5 forwards on the books and not one of them available today. Unbelievable
-
blimey - do we really miss Snoddy, Terry, Onomah and Grabban this much?
-
Goooaalllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!
-
Cracker by Andre!
-
Woof. Some goal.
-
What a goal green
-
GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAL Andre
-
That's better.
-
Get in! 1-1. Lovely stuff.
-
What a stonker !
-
Have we had a shot on target yet?
-
Screamer again from the kid.
-
Yesssss, we're gonna win the league!!!
-
And another!
-
Aaaand another.... blimey
-
Eat my goal.
-
Green again 2-1
-
Cafuuuuuu!
-
We’re gonna piss the league 😂
-
Yesssss, we're gonna win the league!!!
heheheh
-
Stunning goal from Green
-
Fuck me Bruce in, we’re going to win the league and Champions League. Fuck you Wolves.
-
And another. I think he's going to step it up this year.
-
And another! Good work from Hutton.
-
2 1 Villa Green again with a header
-
I fecking love being fickle, me.
-
Well fack me.
Lovely run and cross from the Scottish Cafu and headed in by the big ma... er Green.
-
Villa fans singing “we’re gonna win the league”
-
Are all of their players related?
-
Just watched the goal again. Hutton’s run is superb. He’s not a CB.
-
Bruce. Genius.
-
Fucking get in.
We had enjoyed better possession for 5-10 minutes. As has been said, there was no discernable plan as to how we might create chances but evident application and effort.
They are a group that with a couple of additions and some notion of a plan - i.e. a pattern of play as well as a settled formation - that could do well. UTV
-
Are all of their players related?
Well they’ll all be having sex later with each other, wives and pets at a local farm so it’s entirely possible.
-
We better bloody well get a trophy for this.
Otherwise they are just wasting our time.
-
Amazing how with a bit of pace,we suddenly look like the team that smashed Wolves. So I have to ask the manager the question, "Why do we play so fucking slow 95% of the time?"
-
Pressing them much higher up the pitch
-
Lovely run by Green again. He looks well up for it.
-
What a ball by Jack to Albert. Wasted opportunity
-
Albert was tucking those away for fun last season.
-
Get this lad further up the pitch, with his pace he'll scare most of the Championship defences.
-
Is it just my stream that keeps stuttering?
-
Greenadlo off, Richie the Light on.
-
If Green doesn’t start on Monday week then I want the Bruce thread name changed back again.
-
I don';t know much about German football. Where do Dresden figure?
Did a bit of digging during the boring bits. They play in 2 Bundesliga - equivalent to the Championship. Other interesting facts - their Assistant Manager is a Mr Lust and their Sporting Director is a Mr Minge

They finished 12th I think.
-
Language Timothy!
-
Should have been 2-2
-
More calamity at the back nearly gifts them an equalizer.
-
Off the line to stop them scoring
-
Off the line by RDL. Thank goodness we have so many right backs
-
Blimey we look a bit ropey at the back.
-
Decent turnout nearly 10k.
-
Game over. Champions of Europe yet again
-
Much better second half and I think Andre Green has found his position. Through the middle. We still need players.
-
Decent 2nd half. Defence is still a worry. Andre Green could be our secret weapon this season.
-

Arggh s**t, that's him finished or sold then before the seasons started!!
-
Game over. Champions of Europe yet again
You joke but Wolves would have claimed that.
-
Poor first half, much better in the second. Not overly convincing but I'm sure the one's who went over enjoyed the win.
-
30 boring victories like that will do very nicely indeed.
-

Doesn't count if it's not under floodlights.
-
We have to find a central midfielder to replace Whelan. We need another striker too.
-

Someone/anyone with a wheeled zimmer frame would make an ideal replacement for Whelan.
We need to offload him, Tshibola and Gardner, and if its true that Jedinak is also on the way out of VP, then play Thor as a DM, and use Lansbury, Hourihane, Lyden, Doyle-Hayes or O'Hare when he is fit, to play alongside Jack.
As for a striker,we need to sell the likes of McCormack, Hogan and Kodjia and replace them with a few loanees, to go with our youngsters, in my opinion.
-
Missed the game but looked at the initial knicker wetting posts on this thread about formation, selection etc but it's just a friendly stepping up preparation for the start of the league campaign.
-
Just before he scored I was thinking how anonymous Green had been but the first was a cracking effort and the second he was in the right place. Overall I thought we were ok in possession but a bit loose defensively. Grealish was a mile better than anyone else on the pitch and the treatment he received would have resulted in about 6 yellow cards in a normal game. Terrible mistake by the keeper for their goal but other than his handling was good. We were too ponderous in the first half, Bruce clearly told them to up it in the second and we looked far more threatening.
-
No knicker wetting they were poor.
-
Just back from a very enjoyable weekend in Dresden. Villa were staying in my hotel, which was a lovely surprise. There was excellent rapport between the home and away fans, which hasn't always been the case when we've played in Germany. I agree with the earlier comment that the booing of Jack was "pantomime booing", but it did worry me at the time. Hogan, Davis, Hepburn-Murphy and Kodjia were all injured, which is why first Adomah and then Green played as the central striker. It's not Green's natural position and playing him there isn't an answer to our striker problem, but he certainly took his goals very well.

The Maritim. The German Villans and I booked in there because I stay there through my work, but I didn't expect to see the Villa team there. The players and Steve B were great with photos and autographs, including signed cards for the sons of cheltenhamlion. You'd previously said that you were staying at the Westin Bellvue, which is immediately opposite the Maritim on the other side of the river. I could have contacted you via H&V to say the team were in our hotel and I apologise for not doing so
-
Cracking weekend in Dresden. Boiling hot weather, beautiful buildings, great pubs (and the best beer I’ve ever tasted in a football ground), lovely people and a Villa win. Perfect!

Yep, lovely stuff. German beer is immense. Far better than the piss we get over here.

Yep beer, terraces and, if you like, the option to smoke all while watching the game. There is much to like about watching footy in Germany.
To balance that out they also sold a product called ‘Beer Cola’.
-
Oh and the fanzone outside the ground afterwards was great. Fair play to the Dresden fans, they were very friendly and welcoming.
-
Did anyone see what the scuffle was about in the Villa end? Looked to be something to do with a black tshirt?

No need to apologise, we had a fab weekend.
-

Some bloke took off his shirt then someone picked it up and threw it and he spat out his dummy. Storm in a teacup really. Blame the heat and alcohol.
-
Will they ever allow beer in the stands in English grounds?
Can't be a Fifa restriction as plenty were drinking it in their seats at the World cup.

Fuck all to do with football bodies. Tis the law. (http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2005/3204/schedule/2/made) But only for those ghastly soccer types. Bloody oiks.
-
And yet you can drink in the stands in crowds of 2K+ at non league grounds at a lower level. It's daft.

Well, it's been 100% successful in preventing undesirables getting tanked up at league matches, cos there's like nowhere anywhere better or cheaper where one can get a drink matchdays. Literally nowhere.
Ffs, they're bloody determined to stop standing coming back, you've got no chance of having a pint too!
Expect to be treated like an adult? Not any time soon.

At Bromsgrove you can drink in the stands but not during games like the FA Cup/Vase/Trophy. So you could have for example have a crowd of 4K allowed to drink during a league game, and a crowd of 300 for an early prelim cup game can't.
You could drink in a crowd of 8000 in the Conference South (I think that's the highest level you can) but a crowd of 125 for a Conference game can't.
