Title: Help for Hazel
Post by: Help for Hazel on April 08, 2018, 11:08:21 AM
I hope that admin will allow this to stay on the main page of your site as I am appealing to all the local clubs fans to dig deep and help out this young girls cause.  This has already gone on SHA and now here on HAV.  Next stop will be the Baggies and Wolves forums so I'm hoping that the West Midlands football family can help out this family and more importantly Hazel!

So, come on people of HAV, this courageous little lady deserves all the help she can get, our government will not help with this sort of thing, which I think is absolutely disgusting. Born with a very rare Chromosome disorder called 18p deletion, Hazel does not communicate well as her development is delayed and she is unable to walk unaided.

She has kept on defying all the odds, doctors said she'd never walk but she has started to take just a few steps with support and has also started to use sign language. If you met her you would see she knows clearly everything that is going on and what you say to her, she just develops very very slowly on the physical and communication side of things.

So that's a bit on Hazel. She is one of my best friends daughter and she desperately needs a new wheel chair to help her get around independently which she cannot do at the moment.

The problem is the cost, its £3000. To raise this money her older brother Aiden, who is just 9 years old, is doing the mud run on 21st April and is looking for sponsorship. He has already raised an amazing £1800 on his just giving page so we only need to get another £1200 for her.

If you can give anything, even just £1 then please donate here, if I could get just 1200 people to do that we'd get there for her. If you would like to help out then please donate here:

I have nothing to do with the poster or the young girl in question, but in case anyone wants to read more or donate, a working link might help:

I presume you have been to your local social services department to seek an assessment of need? £3000 is very little money, budget wise for a case like this. I presume the family are also eligible for direct payments given the disability? Before you start asking for money, you need to exhaust all other avenues. Have you written to the Director of Children's Services in your area, or contacted your local MP? Not worth the complaint and they would give you the money as its only three grand. It wouldn't be worth the reputational damage for such a small amount.

This is not the way to do things. However, I can tell you categorically that there are many people in this situation. Wheelchairs are rationed and subject to local decisions-it has very little to do with need. Most people can get a basic chair, but the adaptations are far more problematic. The advice given above is helpful, but you have to experience this day in and day out to know this is political.

Thanks to Zouch Villa for adding the link.  I did add the link but its not carried across for some reason???

In terms of social services etc for funding, they don't provide it for this sort of thing,  the family have obviously been down that route, hence the sponsorship for her brother who is doing the mud run.  Thank you for the suggestion though.

In response to asking if it can go on the site, the first line does say I hope the mods don't mind.

And finally in response to I find it disgusting that they can't get help from local services and the government for grants then if that offends you that's your prerogative but there's no real need for you to comment.  Just ignore the post, I'm not here for an argument just appealing to the West Midlands football fans to help out a family who i think deserve it.

I managed to donate but got her name wrong.
Sorry, Hazel!
I think I confused you with your mom, the crowdfunding organiser.

It would make a huge difference to a child to be able to move independently and if this chair  is what can make that happen for Hazel, then that’s the main thing.
What a superb big brother, as well. :)

Here's my two-penneth worth.

The poster hasn't done anything wrong here. His request is not political (as some have suggested), and his allegiance to small heath is irrelevant in this instance. He is just trying to help out his friends little girl who is in desperate need of it. I for one will be donating, and am disappointed at some of the responses on here.

I don't know what he has said over on SHA as I tend to avoid the dark web at all costs, however I'm sure he was well intentioned at the start and I'd expect the good folk of H&V to be a bit more supportive. Some things transcend football rivalry.

I don't think it's anything to do with football rivalry, but you're right, something like this would make a big difference to a young girl so let's forget about the well-intentioned but possibly poorly-executed request for help.  Donation sent.

It's only a game, something you remember when you read about something like this, so bollocks to rivalry. Donated.

Totally agree: in most things that really matter football rivalries are irrelevant. Donated.

Hi. I just wanted to straighten a couple of things out about the write up for Hazel. Hazel is my little girl and we are very very grateful for all of the donations from Heroes and Villians. I did not do thevwrite up so I think a few things got confused. The doctors didn't say she wouldn't walk but they said they couldn't say if she would or not. Also, the government have provided a wheelchair and offered to put self propelling wheels on it so we do get wheelchair support but Hazel is very small for her age and cannot propel that type of chair because it's so heavy. Therefore we are trying to raise funds ourselves to buy a lightweight wheelchair for her from a specialist wheelchair company that she tried out recently and could get around by herself. The smile and proud look on her face as she wheeled around bought tears to our eyes and we decided there and then she deserved to have one.

Again. Thank you to anyone who had donated and we can only apologise if there was any confusion.

Jon

Jon, no apologies necessary.
I’ve seen your film of Hazel trying out the chair on the crowdfunding page.
Her smile as she realised she could move by herself said it all.

Best of luck with this and to Aiden on his mud run.

I've donated. The total is rising fast and is now at £2448 of the £3000 needed. It doesn't take much to make a real difference to a little girl's life and I'm delighted that it seems this target will be quickly met. Good Luck Hazel!

So - if by the time some of us reach that page we find she already has her chair, please don't forget our Moin - who still needs a vast sum if he is to be able to have the skin treatment that would change his life. Text MoFund to 70507 to give a fiver. X

Nice to hear from you, and good to see that the fund is well on its way to the total.  Hopefully you get there this week and Hazel gets the chair she needs, and it makes a big difference to her life.

I give this poster the benefit of the doubt and wish him success but my antennae start to twitch when children and wheelchairs front up money appeals.

Evening all,

Firstly thanks to all that have donated from my request for help and seeing past footballing alliances.  Jon, sorry if the write up was a little confused matey, but you guys deserve this for Hazel so just trying to get the message out there.  Next time i'll run the write up past you first!!

Have to say I am proud of all on HAV and SHA who have donated, especially one person from here who has put in £300.  Huge huge thanks and respect to you.

Secondly, I put myself in the Lions Den so to speak so I'll take all the digs etc you want to throw at me if it means we can reach out to a few people willing to donate to the cause and make a difference to Hazels life.  Believe me, the donations on the two sites have really put them close to being able to get this done sooner rather than later!  They were around £1200 short this morning, now its down to £500.

Huge thank you to all again.

Thank you to all on here who have donated. You really are so generous and we are so grateful. We have an appointment with RGK Wheelchairs on Thursday to get Hazel measured and stuff so we can get the lightweight wheelchair on order and with the support of the people on here you have helped make this possible. Thank You so so much.

I'll post pics when I have them so you can see what your kind donations have gone towards.

Thank you all so much for the amazingly kind donations. Hazel was so happy to be able to go off exploring and join in on the dance floor with the other children. This really will be life changing for her and we couldn’t of done it without the help for the generous people from H&V. We are so so grateful  :D
