The kind of win that rejuvenates the club and fans. Just like the last time we were in Sheffield

Bringing Jedinak on was a genius move. Ok, maybe we got a bit lucky too. To get that win is just massive given how shit we were in the first half. But these are the wins that get teams promoted. Can’t play well all the time and the players will be just buoyant on the way home.

Our two most creative players out for three games, three poor performances and still taken four from nine points.

That's the sort of team that gets promoted.

Rode our luck first half with the chances they had, then they go 2-1 up at the end of the half and I thought that was game over and only one team would score second half, and they nearly did especially with that goal mouth scramble. What a turnaround. Win when you're playing badly - great result, great feeling.

Excellent second half turn around. On reflection maybe the only mistake in that line-up was including Onomah. Also having Hutton go off allowed Terry and Chester to not get pulled out of position so much which reduced their threat significantly.

Did I think we were going to score four goals, fuck no... but it sure feels good!

Snodgrass involved in all 4 goals ? Only saw the last 25 mins or so but Snodgrass and Hourihane were immense in that time. Credit to the players for not settling for the point that Bruce seemed to be. Hourihane nearly scored just before his cracking goal.

We look an utter wreck at the back though. Johnstone and Terry all at sea.

I was wrong too, said it would be 3-2 and it was actually 4-2.

Dunno how that happened, we could so easily have lost and yet we have a scoreline that flatters us.

We have had a few results that were tight and could have been bad results but we ended up winning, but I think credit has to go to the players for believing they can still win, and for showing resilience.

We have a resilient team.

No chance at 2-1 HT we would have won this match last season.

No chance at 2-1 HT we would have won this match last season.

Aye.  And  think earlier in the season (and even during our recent 7 game winning streak)  there was a feeling that we needed to score first or things would get difficult.  Go behind, and we might get a draw at best.

To get a result like today hopefully illustrates to the players (if they ever doubted it) that they can salvage a result from any position.

Back in my car and my head is pounding and my voice gone for the second time in 4 weeks in Sheffield. Fucking love It!

First half we were easily the better side till we gifted them far too much room and conceded. I felt we re-grouped and ought to have scored when Snoddy was 6 yards out. Rode our luck thereafter and we looked vulnerable throughout to crosses.

Really disappointing goal to concede at a daft time.

The system changed from 442 with Onomah coming in and we just looked ragged.

Second half they came out to dedend and bar one crazy scramble second half they did nowt.

Showed guts to keep going. Found a way to win.

Snoddy, Whelan and Grabban all excellent. Terry put in a brilliant tackle where they were going ape.

Speaking of apes, the Wednesday fans were a bit upset after and there was some argy bargy. Diddums you shower of twats.

Let's hope today's results treble is reflected in a promotion/double relegation treble at the end of the season.

Someone posted pre match that they weren't confident when they saw the team selection, but I was the opposite. I posted that it was a positive attacking one and a bit un 'Bruce like'. My confidence obviously increased during the week as I tipped a draw a on here in the pre match thread a couple of days ago but by today had selected a Villa win in one of my selections in my championship acca bet. Which reminds me that in the excitement of the game and after match glow I haven't checked any of my bets yet.

Well deserved win ha ha - onomah your taxi to London awaits you

He looked really lively and a class above in the early games of the season. And Pochettino apparently didn't want to loan him out, so he is thought of highly at Tottingham.

Hard to know if his current dip is just the kind of ups and downs young players go through (see also Keenan Davis).

Or whether he genuinely can't be facked and is counting the days until he can head back.

Just got back. Never ever saw that after 75 minutes. We’d played well in parts but had been cut open several times by an enterprising opposition. Credit to the manager for mixing it up, with the unimpressive Onomah going off. And, credit to the players for finally turning the screw and getting a result.
I was surprised at the number of police and stewards around, both before and after the game. Is there something from the recent past that warrants such presence?

Fucked it off just before half time when they took the lead again, and went up in the loft to try and sort the long standing issue out with my bathroom extractor, telling myself not to check again until after the final whistle.

Then, the dustbins and the wife were using all digital devices, so I checked via Final Score on the beeb. The Championship scores were coming out on the yellow tape bit, so I had a couple of seconds seeing Forest's 5-2 win at QPR and thinking "why can't we do that" before our score rolled on. It was a brilliant way to find out.

The extractor is still bollocksed, but I don't give a shit. Up the Villa.

You have to wonder how far he'll go if he cant enjoy this season with us.

Stressful, yet ultimately wonderful result. How on earth did we win 4-2?

Snodgrass man of the match for me, and great defending by our lads during that scramble to prevent Wednesday at 2-2.

Snodgrass almost single-handedly carried us forward all game, what a superb performance from the man. Watching him celebrate like a mad man after the game in front of our fans was a thing of beauty. How we won that game I have no idea. Oh yes I do, Snodgrass.
Absoloutely, constantly running at them it was his best performance for us I thought, his run at the end that won the penalty was representative of 3verything that was good about him today.

Superb result.  We got in from a trip to Kingston and the score was 2-2 and our friend wanted us to watch the Ireland Wales rugby last twenty minutes that he'd recorded so, when it was good manners to collect the iPad, it was 2-4, I couldn't believe it.
Any friend of mine would be told to stick his egg-chasing up his arse. ;-)

It's his house, he's Irish as is my missus who likes rugby, I didn't have much choice.  I went up for the iPad on the pretence of having a piss.  It was worth it for the sheer surprise of seeing the result.

Considering that snodgrass is on loan, he must love being here. The way he celebrates goals and wins, you would think he was a born and bred Brummie whose dad, grandad and great grandad had played for the club.

If you fancy a laugh see the 5 page thread on the Wednesday forum titled 'Matchfixing'. They're convinced the ref was a Villan and/or corrupt. Even though I have a bit of a soft spot for them having lived up there for 3 years and sympathise with them for having 16 players out injured, 10 that would be in the first XI according to their manager and most certainly don't want to see them relegated.. but bloody hell, what an hysterical bunch they are. As they say down in South Yorkshire, there's nowt so queer as folk. They should know.

I just had a look at that and your right. That's some next level chip on yer shoulder stuff that is. One guy even brought up "that game" when fergie time was invented. He's right. Goals in the 95th and 97th minute. Blissfully unaware that the team that got really shafted that day was us. We'd got the title wrapped up on 90 minutes! That day changed the course of history for two clubs. Man Utd an Aston Villa. Sheffield Wednesday were robbed of 3 points so they're the real victims according to the twat who posted it.

Just back, rode our luck in the 15 mins before half time. We were second best for an hour. But we somehow ran out winners.

Pleased for Whelan, gets a lot of stick, much of it unjustified.

Spent half time trying to reason with some bloke who was adamant that the end of our run of 7 wins coincided with Whelan' s return to the team. He couldn't grasp that he hadn't been on the pitch.

It's key we get Jack & Albert back in place of Hogan & that tart from spurs.

No Albert?

I may be biased as I was first (and only?) poster to suggest Grabban’s signing, but he’s twice the centre-forward Hogan is. Hogan runs all day but hardly touches the ball outside the box.

I think that's a bitterness filled comment and unnecessary. Match threads re live comments and should be ignored a second after ball has moved on.  To be truthful the team should be 4 point ahead in second place not 1 point behind with the rival having a game in hand.

I loved his 'celebration', he's marvellously dour. It hints at unremitting professionalism, which is most welcome. I think he's one of those that despite having limited impact on the pitch is the right character to have around the club, and that we've needed that almost as much.

How many times have we hosted Man United, for example, and played very well only to wind up with zero points?

Fuck all this "but they were unlucky not to be 12 up" nonsense. It counts for fuck all. We took the three points because we're one of the best sides in this league.

I couldn't see us winning after an hour but we looked better once Onomah went off. He got a lot of stick from the fans today.

The decision to finally play an inswinging corner from the left led to the 3rd but our own defending from corners and set pieces is becoming a problem and Johnstone has recently looked less confident with them.
It could have finished about six or seven each, but on reflection it was an entertaining game and we finished much the stronger.

Ball retention I think, we keep it better when we have our better ball players out there (probably stating the obvious there), Were missing Grealish hugely in this aspect, we have tended to hoof it again over the past few games which is just not suited to Hogans game at all, meaning were losing the ball more quickly and putting more pressure on our defence, We only really have snodgrass at the minute who can carry the ball over any distance, the sooner we get Jack and Albert back the better from an attacking and defensive point of view the better.

There's only so much woulda, coulda, shoulda, the referre was bent! that you can talk about when you get 4 drilled past you on your own patch.

I remember Yorke diving for a free kick at Old Trafford which Beckham then sailed into the top corner from 25 yards. Football is about opportunity and who takes it with that moment of quality. Hourihane's lovely guided finish made the difference, the rest is just noise on the breeze.

So fuck off Wednesday, there's good chaps.

Extremely fucked off with players and Bruce pre match and expected a defeat. Once we went 1-0 down I’m downcast as autos is gone and the lottery of play offs. So hit Tesco’s with the wife.

Just about to leave and it’s 1-1, cue relief with the showing of some resilience.

Get to Tescos and its 2-1 to the owls. Fuck sake villa. Praying for equaliser. Checking bbc updates every turn and half way down each aisle.

Last aisle (bog roll), missus forgot cheese, I’ll wait here and check score.....2-2 Whelan!!!!

One of the reasons I was cheesed off was seeing him back in the xi. WTF do I know ?!!

Get in the car, roundabout and Hourihane makes it 3-2 - cue bedlam behind the wheel, euphoria, swearing, fist pumping.

Approach drive, pull in and penalty to villa. Singing, Dancing, jumping in the Remy household.

Great to be a Villa fan..as I wipe egg off my face, apology to Bruce and the boys.

I’d say in the context of our season that may prove to be one of the most important victories in our season or recent history.

I’m counting hours till I take my seat at VP for the hoops.

The very encouraging thing is we scored 4 times without Albert and Jack and without really providing any service to Hogan. He could have scored just before Grabban did but it wasn’t like we were very creative most of the game. But we found a way. And our midfield came through yet again.

Quality post Remy.

Hourihane's finish was an absolute beauty or a wonderful stroke of luck. I'm inclined to believe the former as he has form for those expertly guided shots. Love the way he almost celebrated it before hit the net, certainly before a mighty cheer came from the away end. His left foot is worth its weight in gold, one more and he's our first midfielder double figures since God knows who.

Do we like that Fulham is ahead? No clue - Guess we fight for no 2 and it is crap

Anyway - today - the MAIN man was Snoddy! bloody .... - he was good today. Others - especially midfield were not so good - we rode our luck. Flooded the midfield without controlling it - Onomah was good the first 20 minutes - then I praised him :/ and was shit after.

Lesson learned? I will never ever praise a player on match thread again.

He's a player and his attitude is fantastic. Pray he stays.

Good stuff Remy.

Like a small heath fan’s match thread for a home game, apart from the ‘we won’ bit.

He kept giving Snoddy free kicks for being fouled and then didn't send Terry off for an excellent tackle. Didn't give a goal for a ball not crossing the line.

Not sure what the referee had to with us sticking 4 past them or them only scoring 2. Bitter cranks.

they were a tad unlucky with the amount of times they hit the woodwork, but sometimes you need luck on your side  and let's face it, we've not had much of it in the last few years. Maybe the gods are on our side again and this is our year.

Great win that. If you want to go up automatically you need to win games when you play poorly and don't necessarily deserve to win. We were dreadful first half and I feared the worst but credit to Bruce, he made a couple of changes and they worked.

For the first time in years we've actually got players that we like again. That season we went down I hated every one of the fuckers. The scenes at the end showed how much it means to them and that they care. People said Terry was coming for one last pay day and he wouldn't be bothered but he's a professional and a winner and a leader. Snodgrass aswell, only on loan but he cares.

Onomah on the other hand. Send him back to Spurs. Useless and shouldn't even be in the squad.

Two of our best and biggest wins have come in Sheffield. Brilliant scenes and support in both games. UTV

No way would I take Hogan out. His energy and enthusiasm in chasing the ball was exemplary.  Grealish for onomah and grabban on the left

No Albert?

I may be biased as I was first (and only?) poster to suggest Grabban’s signing, but he’s twice the centre-forward Hogan is. Hogan runs all day but hardly touches the ball outside the box.

Completely agree.  Grabban looks like a proper striker, and one who can also play wide if needs be.  When Jack and Albert are fit, I'd play:

Johnstone
Elmo Chester Terry Hutton
Jedinak/Whelan/Bjarnason [depending on whether physicality or a bit more athleticism is called for]
Hourihane Grealish
Snodgrass Grabban Adomah

I reckon that team would see us over the line into 2nd no danger.

Superb result scoring 4 away from home without our 2 most creative players is some achievement. I'm one of Conor's biggest critics, but fair play to him, 9 goals from a midfielder is impressive.

Looking at the Wednesday fans website, the referee had a shocker. I wasn't at the match but certainly can't see how they can have any complaints about our goals, but to have only 1 foul awarded against is an amazing stat. I would be interested to hear from those who were there of their opinion of the ref.

They’ve obviously got history with Snodgrass as he seemed to be the one getting pelters. I thought the ref was fine to be honest, Wednesday we’re just niggling the whole time, committing petty fouls. More fool them to be honest, for the first 60-70 mins they created much the better opportunities and always looked likely to score. Once Whelan equalised we looked stronger, fitter and they faded badly.

It doesn't come as any great surprise to me - since I've found them to be an arrogant, deluded bunch for as long as I can remember. I see one of the paranoid juveniles on their website has now sent an email to the FA about the Ref's performance yesterday! Our first goal might have been offside but tbh non TV games down here don't have replays so have no idea how anyone could be certain watching it at real speed.

The team at the end in front of us were a joy to watch, Brucey not my type of manager, but he has brought this club around and it's nice to have players that care and we care about them.

Can’t agree about the “crap ground” bit. Hillsborough is a fantastic stadium and always has been.
It's dated run down and not fit for purpose.  That end should have been bulldozed down in 89

I agree with this. Been past the ground a few times and approaching from Leppings lane it has a creepy feeling about it given its past and also situated in a valley. Standing at the memorial board for the victims was a very sobering 30 seconds.

I'd be uncomfortable on an away end knowing this is where so many people lost their lives, I too don't understand why it hasn't been rebuilt.

Bramall Lane imo is a much better ground and overall trip. Can walk to it from the centre in 10 minutes.

Putting another side to them, we were in one of their clubs not far from the ground before the game. They were quite pleasant to be honest.

We'll have none of this 'quite pleasant' lark, Clampy. I think you'll find they're all arrogant, deluded arseholes. FACT!  :D

From my angle I thought Terry could have been sent off. The only other decisions I remember the referee getting wrong were the blatant corner we were denied in the first half when the goalkeeper misjudged the ball and had to race back and tip it over, and the ludicrous non-booking of the thug that, literally, kicked Hutton out of the game.

One of them has actually written to the FA!

They might be the twattiest set of fans we have faced this season, pretty impressive considering we've already played Leeds, Millwall and Small Heath (twice). Bunch of moody twelve year olds shouting from behind the safety of a row of stewards.

I remember once Graham Poll saying it would always be big news when you send off an England captain as John was at the time.

He's just one of those players you know will make headlines if you show him a red. Most refs would have second thoughts at it.

He could actually have been sent off in the week, PNE player was in on goal and Terry cyncially pulled him back which stopped him shooting. Got a yellow for it but could easily have been a red.

This seems to be their complaint:

"

Precisely.

Their first goal came from a free kick that wasn't.

Their second came on the back of a two footed challenge from behind on Reach that was deemed to be no foul.

Their third came from a corner that wasn't.

The fourth came from Snodgrass entering the box (running the ball over the line in the process) and hunting for contact before passing the ball and charging, head down, into the back of Pudil.

Not to mention the challenge on Atdhe when he was through on goal - albeit with work to do - and the foul on Boyd in the box.

Incompetence wouldn't explain the disparity. "

I have to say reading his take on the Snodgrass pen was amusing, that's one of the clearest fouls in the box you'll see all season. If that's how he interpreted the incidents I doubt there was much in the others!

You can see the Snodgrass penalty on telly or the internet. It's as blatant a penalty as you'll ever see. If they're so one-eyed as to try to imagine some reason why that shouldn't have counted, it invalidates the rest of their discourse.

I had a read of their fans forum for a couple of weeks last January during the transfer window. Both teams were being linked with the same players (Hourihane & Rhodes) and I was keen to read of any updates. They were livid when we signed Hourihane and started blaming us for paying more than the going rate for him (which translates to him preferring to join us). They also seemed very aggrieved that we somehow had the audacity to expect them to pay Joe Bennett's wages if we re-loaned him to them. They also have some bizarre impression that Dr Tony is a madman akin to some kind of Bond Villain you see in movies. Finally, when we signed Hogan, it allowed them to sign Rhodes and they accused us of trying to derail the Rhodes deal for them because we were never interested in signing him.

I'm sure they do have some sensible members on the forum but based upon the (albeit small) portion of threads that I looked at, connected to the transfer window, I formed the opinion that the board was made up of a mixture of nutcases and 10 year olds. Their comments about match fixing yesterday only reinforces my opinion.

We did have a game recently where I thought that we got the rub of the green regarding refereeing decisions but I can't remember who it was against. Whoever it was, it was a long time coming. I saw nothing wrong with the ref yesterday although watching from behind the goal is not the best place to catch everything that goes on.

The best thing to do when other fans moan is to agree with them that yes, big clubs do get the decisions and yes, John Terry does referee the game and yes, if they were as big as us they'd get the same preferential treatment.

But that "Owlstalk" forum seems to attract the full gammet of conspiracy theorist, tin foil hat wearing, everyone's got it in for us  bunch of twats. Apparently we only got the penalty because the powers that be want us back in the premier league and not because their player hit Snoddy with a body check worthy of any Superbowl final.

I don't know what i enjoyed more yesterday. The result or listening to their equivalent of the WM after match phone in (called 'praise or grumble' i shit thee not) on the journey home

Absolute clowns. The result was all down to the referee, even going as far as to claim he'd took a bung  ;D

But special praise to their fan that called in just to call Snodgrass a ****** on air ...  :)

I thought the performance itself was pretty poor all told, which seems odd when you score four away. But it was a mess for most of the match to my eyes, with very rare moments of quality creeping in unexpectedly amongst the chod.

A classic, in and out, how did we win that performance which was all that was required really.

I think he got the no tip over the bar right.
I also think thier players got involved with the being hard done by, by the ref which led to thier capitulation in the last period of the game.
Let’s remember they were 2 1 up and pretty comfortable.

Just watched the extended highlights.

Terry plays the ball in the incident where they claim he should have been sent off.
Snodgrass is pulled back for the foul that led to our 1st goal
The ball wasn't out in the build up that led to our 3rd goal

Looks like the match wasn't fixed after all.

The two things that have really stood out for me since we've played in the Championship are the poor standard of refs and the number of times you can get away unpunished for mistakes in the final third of the field because of poor finishing from the opposition. However, I don't think that I can recall a refereeing decision that has cost us points other than possibly the Lansbury sending off against Boro.

Wednesday will rightly feel upset that they didn't get anything out of the game and we rode our luck at times. Ultimately, they didn't get anything out of the game because of a mixture of poor finishing (a Championship trait) and misfortune. To blame the ref is just silly.

Anyway none of it matters much now. We have a vital 3 points from a game that we'd probably have settled for a point in prior to Whelan's goal and can now look forward to the next game with confidence on the back of netting 4 times.

My conclusion to your post is that you need a new extractor fan. UTV
I agree but I think, Lee, don't do anything about it till our next away match. So get back up in the loft on Tuesday evening 6th March.

Not sure what to make of Bruce's Villa at the moment.  Playing gash for 70 minutes and winning 4-2 sounds like the kind of thing sides looking to get promoted need to do, and augurs well for grinding out further wins.  But the fact we were gash for much of the time makes it sound like we rode our luck and the result and scoreline was somewhat flattering.  Which doesn't augur so well unless that kind of luck continues or our form improves.

I certainly remember a post-match barrage of bricks down Witton Lane when we played 'em in the late 70's/early 80's. I seem to recall that it was a midweek night match, but my (hazy) memory is of it being a league game after they'd finally got promotion to the 1st Division. Pwoppa nawteee.

We didn't play them in the first division. They were up for a season when we were in division two but we played them twice in the League Cup and twice in FA Cup replays.

All good sides do that - ride their luck, have spells of playing poorly and still get results.

If you set yourself out expecting to play well week in, week out, you'll be disappointed - especially in such a long season.

The one I remember was a league cup night game. A group of Sheffield Wednesday fans were being escorted up Witton Lane and a group of Villa fans ambushed them from the bingo hall just past the Holte End. It was the Villa fans who were guilty of causing the trouble and throwing a barrage of bricks etc. Back then, it was unusual for fans to be escorted directly past the Holte, they would always go round the back way, serpentine Rd etc.

Extended highlights here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4Rt63Xqu06g

I can’t believe how shocking we were defensively, particularly from set pieces and particularly Terry

Seems like we got played off the park in the first half, quality first goal for them.

For their second, did Hourihane leave the post as the corner came in?

He seemed in no mans land as the header went past Johnstone.

Terry is struggling last few weeks, positioning is all over the place.

There was a big old ding dong with Weds in Big Ron’s first season, they got off coaches at the leisure centre, and attacked the Aston Tavern. I always remember a Villa lad with his leg in plaster getting right stuck in.

I thought we started the game quite well but then they came back into it. Their two up front were fuckin giants so it’s no wonder they won so many headers.

Looks a handy addition. Has hardly played since finishing up with Sunderland but has made a timely impact for us.

Thought Davis did well when he came on too.

Been impressed with Grabban aswell. In fairness he is proven at this level and seems a much better fit for our style under SB than Hogan.

Dare I say if we'd sign him in the summer we'd be comfortable in top 2.

Funnily enough, our XG was the highest in the league over the weekend, at 3.5 goals expected

Not sure id have guessed that from the highlights. Maybe it’s because all of our goals were absolute sitters?
Sorry but can you help here. What is XG? Is it expected goals factor?

Someone once said you are better being a lucky manager than a good one. Bruce is certainly lucky. We were as bad as we have been at any time over the last few years for parts of that game. Awful. Last 20 minutes Onomah going off changed the game completely. Fair play to Davis for making himself a target up front and Snodgrass is miles better than this division.

It's pretty obvious that we are massive when we have clubs hundreds of miles away obsessing over our ownership. I don't think I could name the owner of a single club in the division other than us.
.

I can.  The bloke that runs Blues is called Dong.

Funnily enough, in Korean, that means 'shit'. How apt

Many thanks for filling in those pesky age-related gaps, chaps. I was definitely present at the above fixture & remember said flying bricks & mucho rubble as I attempted to get up to Witton island. The Wednesday fans had been gathered up and surrounded by a thin blue line on the station ramp when I finally got down there; and they were still being bombarded by a variety of missiles. Those genuinely scary times were certainly a far cry from the modern-day equivalent of luzzing the odd plastic chair or traffic cone...

It all depends how many triple word scores he can get along with double word assists I suppose

Villa need more players to contribute to the scoring. Grabban can't have a monopoly on the goals

One thing I noticed from the highlights - and I'm not trying to make an issue of it - is the first goal Hogan had the shot, it didn;t go in, then he almost looked disappointed for a couple of seconds that Grabban had netted, then realised and ran over to join the celebrations.  it was a bit weird.

I was following on the Beeb from a bar in Paris whjilst watching Englnad get stuffed in the rugby and it cheered me up no end, proper oh yes moment when I saw the final score!
