Was worried then.  Hopefully this is pretty routine.

One of my all time footballing heroes.

Get well soon Tony.

it was never a pen!

Great double from Tone. Great player, will forgive him for trying to chat my girlfriend up in front of me back in his heyday!

My favourite ever Villa player. Also a great bloke. I've got his Morley 11 shirt from a Villa legends charity game in Yardley years ago after donating quite a few quids to the very worthy cause for a very poorly little boy. It was an unofficial agreement between Tony Morley, me and the father of the little lad. All parties were happy with the deal until Neil Rioch ,who was running the team vetoed it as he said they couldn't be 'giving' shirts away. Tony Morley then vetoed Neil Rioch's veto and we swapped contact details and I met up with him a few days later at a school he was coaching at in Chelmsley Wood so he could give me the shirt and get a photo with him. I found Neil Rioch to be a miserable git abut the whole thing (which is also what Tony Morley thought), but it did mean that for a while my claim to fame was having Tony Morley's phone number on my old mobile. I'm as sure as I possibly can be that I didn't ever drunk dial or text him in an ex boyfriend/girlfriend style. I hope he has a very speedy recovery.

I've often thought that if he hadn't missed that penalty we quite possibly wouldn't have won the European Cup.

Seem to be a fair few celebrating Morley's winner. Can't believe many Villa were behind the Iron Curtain so must be locals taking the piss out of the Stasi team?

Maybe. Didn't know we had soldiers in the East as late as that.

Maybe. Didn't know we had soldiers in the East as late as that.

They would have come over from West Berlin I would imagine. I spoke to someone recently (an Irish lad) who lived in W.Berlin in the 1980s and he said that he would quite regularly go for a drink in the East. Brendan Ormsby and Ivor Linton in defence - the rock that won us the cup

I didn't know you could just pop from the West to the East that easily. Obviously, the local population couldn't.

I knew some blokes from the Cup in Sutton who went to that game - we went with them to Anderlecht.

They said there were maybe 400-500 Villa fans there and a good number of squaddies who jumped over from West Berlin. It was common to pop over as booze was incredibly cheap in East Berlin. Apparently outside the stadium a small mob of  Berlin fans were looking for trouble after the game and the squaddies  told my mates to leave it to them. Which they did.

So... if the East Germans wanted to defect they should really have just sewn themselves a convincing Britisher uniform and they'd have got away with it!

Anybody else see the thread title and panic slightly before seeing it was 'only' a knee op?

Yeah, thread title should have been more like 'Wishing you a successful knee replacement'.  I'll be having the same for one or both knees within the next 5 - 7 years I've been told.

Get well soon Tony !
I can endorse all the nice things said about him - have met him just twice and he was very friendly and genuine  -   one of my all time favourite Villa players -  I was in the main stand at Goodison when he scored that brilliant goal in 81 - happy days !

Oh dear Bren sorry to hear that.  I have just had my second hip done.  I guess you may be going private but I would recommend the Royal Orthopedic surgeons if you have a choice.  It's all hips and knees in there and the staff really know what they are doing.
Funnily enough I see Tony Morley around quite often and have never noticed him limping so am a bit surprised but I saw Peter Withe in Doha Airport in November and He was walking exactly the same as me and definitely needs his hip doing.

My knees aren’t quite incapacitated yet. I can walk but I’ve come to terms with the fact I’ll never make the starting 11 for the Villa unless of course medical advancements in the next 5 to 7 years prove otherwise. The man who looks after me looks after our players too so I should be in good hands.

Tony Morley is my all-time Villa hero. I was excited pretty much every time he touched the ball. Was devastated when he got sold. I’m still not sure I ever got over it!

My mom's had some very complex surgery at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, which is one of only 5 purely orthopaedic hospitals in the country. One of the surgeons who operated on her is a Villa fan. He's great, IMO.

All the best Tony.  One of the few players who when he received the ball always gave everyone a sense of anticipation and raised the crowd volume at villa park. Quite often the ball just landing at his feet caused a roar to go around villa park.
