Title: The greatest game you have ever been at (Villa only)
Post by: wittonwarrior on December 03, 2017, 11:43:24 AM
Mine has to have been the 2nd Replay at OT in 77.

The game had everything - half term meant I could go evening living in London at the time.  Stayed at my mates house in Northfield (shout out to Mark Tonks).

Went the match with Mark, his sister Nicki and his mum and dad (who both were Albion fans - he used to work at the Albion something to do with physio).

Traffic was horrendous and we only got in the ground as Everton scored.  We gradually started to dominate the match without scoring when Chris Nicholls wrote himself into history with that tunderbolt (was it 40 yards, 50 yards or even further).

Little then scores our second only a minute or so later on and we were in heaven for the first time that night only for  the spawns to grab an equaliser of their own.

I knew at the end of 90 minutes we would win all the Everton players were flat out on the ground  whilst ours were all on their feet receiving instructions from Saunders.

Again we took the match to Everton in extra time and what had to be one of the world crosses of all time which two Everton defenders took a swipe at and missed only for Brian Little to score the winner.  Heaven has no boundaries.

Inter Milan at home, 94, Phil King. Remember driving back down the M1 to London and every car that had a Villa flag was greeted with cheers, horns, etc. I was in love with the Villa many moons before but that night was very special.

Cried like a baby when Bozzie saved the last one.

Great night in the Ad's after.

Villa 4 Liverpool 2.

Remember that so well, I was on the move around the Holte when Saunders slipped the equaliser in and Ronnie Rosenthal missing that sitter.

Villa v Manchester United in the second leg at home, winning 2-1. 47 years ago.

Amazing passion, throbbing Holte End, breathing as one. Irrepressible team held and lifted high by Villans giving everything, everything from the heart.

Athletico Madrid second leg.
This stocks on the mind, especially the second half. I remember Collymore  and Hendrie having a blinder. Tails with his usual home leg goal. I remember Mollina had just broke a Spanish league record for time without conceding a goal and played a blinder. How we didn't win the round I don't know.

I remember Taylor giving the pen away in the first leg and a pretty bad first half.

I remember being pleased to see Vieri in the flesh as he was one of my favourite players at the time. Best player out of Australia by a mile.

I am sure Bernboy that for those of us of a certain age this is the game we will remember. It was a packed Villa Park, Villa were in the old third division and for me , this game stood for the re-birth of the club that 12 years later would be lifting the European Cup. The Trinity Road stand was rocking, the Holte End was absolutely rammed and in the middle of it all a 12 year old Virgil Caine realised that this would be the football team he would go through life with.

Too difficult to chose out of so many starting with Charlton 11-1.  So from my greatest list I've gone for the most enjoyable, the 1977 League Cup semi-final replay at Highbury, QPR 0 Villa 3.
Living in London you had to suffer their press going on as to how QPR were going to put us to the sword after the previous two drawn games.
Little scored all three, Gray ripped the QPR centre backs to bits and Mortimor dominated midfield. Highbury was awash with Villa fans and the evening was made all the more enjoyable as QPR had acted like horses' arses throughout the two ties.
One of the next days red tops had the headline "Little by Little by Little".
Happy days.

94 League Cup Final Villa 3 United 1, goals from Dalian and 2 from Deano. A United side that had Keane, Ince, Giggs, Hughes, Cantona and a certain Steve Bruce.

It was a monumental win against one of their best sides, they’d been almost unbeatable and had run away with the league.
I think it gets a bit overshadowed by the drama of the Tranmere game.

As I've posted before, me and a mate brought a bunch of kids over to Birmingham on a football tour.  The final part of the trip was a group tour of Villa Park.

After that was over, we got back on our coach to head home.  The kids' all wanted to load up with a few goodies, sweets, cakes etc, so I got the driver to call in to One-Stop at Perry Barr.

Most of the kids on the trip were Manure fans including my mates then ten-year-old son who was wearing a Manure shirt.

As we boarded the coach a Villa fan approached in his Villa shirt, opened his coat wider and started singing "where's yer treble gone"?  Priceless.

For me its Villa 2 Man Utd 1 November 1966. Utd running away with the 1st Division title, Best, Charlton, Law, Crerrand etc. Thier fans took over the Holte & drowned us out, expecting a cricket score win. Not so! We kicked off & scored thanks to Utd thiking they didn't need to defend as we were so poor. Then came the onslaught. Intense attack which some how Colin Withers & "Tulip" in particular kept at bay. Eventually they scored & the Utd fans started telling me how we were now to get the kicking we deserved for having the cheek to not be several goals behind. From the kick off Lew Chatterly (Ithink) went upfield & put the ball in the net! Utds fan were stunned into silence. Wave upon wave of thier attacks came to nothing & eventually we ran out winners. Great memory for me.

For pure theatre and drama away at Sheffield Wednesday in Big Ron's first game in charge having defected from Wednesday in the summer of 1991.  I cannot remember being more elated after a game.  Games are sometimes defined as the best due to their significance.  Others are down to the circumstances of how you won.  This one was definitely a case of the latter.  As was Tranmere.  I don't think days like these will ever be repeated due, primarily to the lack of atmosphere lost when standing went.

Off the top of my head and in order that they happened, the Anderlecht home leg, the final in Rotterdam, the Super Cup final second leg the following year, the return game with Small Heath at Villa Park that season with Shaw's late winner after they did us 3-0 at the sty on boxing day, 4-3 against Albion on the first day of the following season, beating BFR's United 3-0 on Six's debut, the last three games against Shrewsbury, Bradford and Swindon in '88, all three of the 13-0 triology against Small Heath, most games in the winter/spring of 1989/1990 (especially the win at Spurs and the last day at Everton), Milan 1990, BFR's first game at Hillsborough and the win at Spurs that season after being two down, Wembley 1994, the Kevin Phillips game at the sty, the Easter Sunday 3-1 Cahill game that helped send them down, the day we stuffed Sheffield United in front of the boys of '81/'82 and the Albion the and Sunderland  games at Villa Park under Lambert.

Oh, and winning about six nil in at Witney town in pre season 1991 when I not only saw Ivo Stas play for us he also scored (even if it should have been disallowed as it hit the side netting, squeezed under it and crept into the goal.

Edit - I have just remembered I wasn't at the game when Phillips got the winner at the sty, I watched it in the pub!

The Tranmere semi final home leg is one that still gives me goosebumps. Not the biggest game in our history by any stretch, but it had absolutely everything.

Also, shout out for Christmas 1989-90 when we beat Man U 3-0 and Arsenal 2-1 both at home, in the space of three days or so.

Best football I've ever seen at Villa Park was Juventus in 1983. What a truly special side that was.

Two great bits of skill - Sid at 1:54 and a breathtaking flick from Platini on 3:10

I had it in my mind that Cantona was suspended for that game. I think what confused me was that he had been sent off in the previous league game and I think Schmichael had been sent off in the one before that meaning Mad Les was in goal for them. I was sat behind the goal Dalian scored in with Cyrille Regis sitting near me.

It wasn't a replay so I think it was a night match because we had to replay our third round tie against Spurs? Fantastic atmosphere at the old Baseball Ground that night. A proper old style football ground. We had a decent view too as we were up in the seats as opposed to the lower standing part.

They showed the highlights on SKY a couple of years back.

Andy Lochhead has prompted me to post.
That game, probably the biggest crowd I ever stood in at V.P, the record book says 58,000, I am sure at the time it was set at 62,000
Pat Mac & Andy
Sammy's game against Arsenal,  Cup  3rd round replay 74. Pity about the next round at Burnley, but it was great on the night.
As per many others L.C replay against Everton, C.N screamer and Sir Brian X 2, although the semi at Arsenal against QPR and Sir Brian's hat trick runs this close.
Beating L/pool 5-1 I really thought we had arrived. finished 4th, won the league cup, knocked out in 6th round of cup 2-1 at OT.
In the modern era there have probably  many fantastic games I have never seen,  so being at V.P for the 5-1 with my family and ensuring they will always be Villians, finishes off my selection

Neutral: 94 League Cup Final, 96 was good as well, but was more routine.
Agree with all of these.

Sorry, but 5-5 from 5-1 down at Spurs takes some topping for away results, at a time when we were really shit and they were that era's creme-de-la-creme.

Away from home would be 5-2 at Spurs after we were 2-0 down in April 1992. Absolutely loved that game.

Edit - I have just remembered I wasn't at the game when Phillips got the winner at the sty, I watched it in the pub!

How? It wasn't on telly.

That was back when some pubs had the dodgy satellites. I remember watching us at Anfield in the Ivy Bush back in about 98 and that wasn't on Sky.

Yes, I definitely watched it in the pub. I watched it with my mate in his local, The Red Lion in Shirley. Foreign commentary, either SKY Italia or Al Jazeera I think. At least we saw the game. We went in there once to watch a dodgy after hours feed of a David Haye/Audley Harrison fight and ended up listening to it old style on tut wireless. Still, a lock in is a lock in, even an 'audio only' one.

94 League Cup Final Villa 3 United 1, goals from Dalian and 2 from Deano. A United side that had Keane, Ince, Giggs, Hughes, Cantona and a certain Steve Bruce.

That was where I was too, Damo. Big Cyrille was only a few seats away from me, on the row behind I think.

I was sat in that area too and Gary Shaw was right by us, though I only caught a glimpse through the sea of supporters trying to talk to him.

Was it long benches still, rather than seats, in '94?

If I remember right he was in the row behind me, sort of over my left shoulder so it appears you and I were sat in the same row.

I was on the Holte that night. The Juventus side had Zoff, Gentile, Cabrini, Scirea, Tardelli and Rossi in their side. Six of the Italian team that started the 1982 World Cup final. Plus Bettaga who had previously won loads of Italy caps and Platini and Boniek who had both reached the semi finals in '82 with France and Poland.

I used to think Liverpool were the best team I ever saw at Villa Park when it came to pass and move football. Until the night I saw Spartak Moscow pass us off the park. Their movement was incredible, even if it did take a last gasp goal for them to beat us.

That Juventus side were the second best away side i've seen at VP, Spartak Moscow a couple of years later were the best.

Tranmere game wins it for me, the game itself was enough but it was also the last great day of the Holte, in fact of any big terrace in this country.

I don't know if this game has been mentioned, but Bradford at Villa Park in our last promotion season was an incredible atmosphere. The Holte was rammed and the noise was deafening.

To this day, I'll never know how we got away with that one.
Yes that's a game I'll never forget and you're right it was Chatterley, who got the winner.

You are Lew Chatterley and I claim my £5.
Dec 3rd - and Tony Scott got the first

I'm not sure that I'd call this game the greatest that I've ever seen, but I've no doubt that it was the most extraordinary. Colin Withers is one of my all-time favourites, but I've no idea how he kept out the onslaught on that day. In the end, it was almost a siege with "shots in." I can clearly remember standing behind the goal on the Holte End watching Bobby Charlton firing wide from inside the penalty area on several occasions when it seemed that scoring was just a formality.
It felt as if the number of times we crossed the halfway line all afternoon could have been counted on the fingers of one hand.

EIA, I think I can tell you how many times we crossed the halfway line that day...twice!*  Outcome, two goals, the rest of the time it was the most one-sided football match I've ever seen.  As I said above, to this day I do not know how we got away with it.

*Not really, but it wasn't much more.

I know, but the thing that has intrigued me the most was when Lew Chatterly "broke away" from our half and lumbered his way towards their goal only to score, much to everyone's joy and amazement. Lew was a good hearted centre half who had been seconded to play centre forward due to the lack of any options to fill that position.

Tranmere at home had everything; apart from the relief of Kevin Phillips winner over at their place.

Some great memories, Rotterdam, Highbury, wembley a few times amongst that, the Liverpool game in 76/77 obviously. One game that always sticks in my mind though is when we beat Liverpool 2-0 in our championship winning season. That was the day I actually believed we could win the league.

Another I always think about is boxing day 1970, 2-0 v Shrewsbury. My first ever game at 7 and I had the bug straight away and knew I was going to follow my late Brother in following this club all my life
