I worry quite strongly about our ability to keep the ball with that central midfield. Ah well, here's hoping.

Three right backs on our books and he plays Elmo.

Rest of the team looks great. Whelan playing deep and giving the defence some cover is fine providing that's what he's told to do.

Finally an attacking line up.

4-0 Villa

Bring it on!

I think I'm finally starting to see the pattern. He bows to the pressure and picks an attacking line-up so that we (hopefully) win again, then he can have a 4 or 5 game streak where he can go back to what he likes, the old 8-1-1.

Reckon it'll be a 4-3-3..With the Kodjia wide left and Snodgrass inside....

Adomah could be vital ,if we are to get three points today.

Yep I'm going for 4-3-3 also on second look. I expect Whelan to sit in front of the back four, Adomah and Hourihane in front. Kodjia left, Snodgrass right.

Post by: Monty on September 16, 2017, 04:48:27 PM
It's an attempt at an attacking formation, but it might not end up like that as the wide 4-4-2 can make it difficult to keep the ball (having the ball being an important thing to make sure you've done before attacking).

Come on Villa...There's been some advantageous results today in the division...We'd be right in the looking above pack, if we can win today.

Can we just have another on the front foot performance ala Norwich

No Jedinak on the bench

I remember Bruce saying last season that he has always been a 4-4-2 man. Not many square pegs in that team today so I'm hoping for a positive result and Kod to get through the game without any knocks.

Surely Snodgrass central and Adomah wide?

Has Adomah ever played centrally for anyone before?

Us, in whatever desperate game it was at Villa Park (I cant remember who we were playing) where he subbed our only striker and moved Adomah in to an ever so slightly advanced central midfield position in a 5-5-0 formation.

That is 442 with Elmo at right back and Adomah on the left I would reckon. If Bree and De Laet are behind Elmo in the right back pecking order then that's a huge issue.

Probably not 100% hence on the bench. Probably see him at some point in the second half. Disappointed Jedinak isn't fit enough - another key player still not fully fit after his groin operation.

It's all a bit predictable this.

We score, they immediately start to run the game whilst we drop back more and more.

And our attacking presence gets less and less.

What I'd like Bruce to do is find a style, but it doesn't need to be the same home and away.

So, if we reckon we're useful on the counter, set up to play that away from home.

If we think we can replicate the way we played against Norwich, adapt that at home.

Then just fucking stick to it and hoover up wins. This league is fucking awful, it's shameful that we do so badly in it. That's what Benitez got right with Newcastle, took a few games but found a starting line up and style that would work more often than not, and stuck to it.

If the saying is true, you must be a good team, if you're playing badly and winning, we must have a heck of a team!

It's only due to good defending by the CBs and poor delivery by them, that they could've have scored 3 or 4. They've looked dangerous, almost every time they've attacked.

Davis has got immense physical presence. If he can add goals to his game a la Benteke he'll be superb.

Agreed.

One good thing is if we can get a clean sheet, would be 3 in a week so starting to get that defensive toughness we had for large parts of last season.

Indeed, but I think he could be a 15-20 a season striker in the league above this one if he reaches his potential, he's got decent pace, is very strong, works his tits off but also has very good technique.

On topic taking Kodj off is the right decision here, the game is passing him by a little now and he looks like he's running in jelly.

The thing is, if he thinks Hogan can turn it round still that's the sort of time where you bring him on up front alongside a guy who is occupying both central defenders and try to create a few chances for him in the hope that it helps him going forward.  Kodjia had to go off but the change was a 'seeing it out' one that we didn't really need to make.  I'd have taken Houri off as well and given them both half an hour because I'd like to see if we can form a midfield 2 who can offer a bit more control than this one has.
