Bristol City vs Aston Villa
Championship
Fri 25 Aug, 19:45
Ashton Gate, Bristol
-
Dave was supposed to start this thread. 😓
-
I am sure most will predict a win on the back of two win, however Bristol are on the back of a good win having gone to Watford and won comfortably. Will be a tough game and they panned us last season. 2-1 to us if our strikers turn up.
-
My first game of the season, Ashton Gate is walking distance from my house.
A week ago I wasn't relishing this too much (the same fixture last season being a little sobering) - but now I'm properly excited! Not expecting another four goals, but a positive, confident performance would be most enjoyable.
UTV.
-
Lee Johnson's boys are buzzing so it's going to be tough. Anyone's game so a draw for me.
-
Draw. A confident start and we take the lead. Half time sees us a goal up. They change things, the inevitable coming for some time, when they score on 73. We chuck an extra defender on and get the draw. Bruce hails it as masterful.
-
They have been poor so far. Drew with Milwall at home last time out.
It's the acid test. We have to show a positive intent away from home.
Same side as Norwich save Lansbury in for the injured Onomah and Bree for Hutton.
-
We better beat these ******. They have pissed me off lately. Two defeats in their last eleven... both against Small Heath including the game that kept them up. We should be aiming to score ten.
-
I think this will be a tough game so I'm going for a 1-1 draw.
-
Dave was supposed to start this thread. 😓
It was only 36 hours until kick-off, so the thread needed starting. If you lot decide on these stupid superstitions on days that I'm not around, how am I supposed to take them into account ? ;)
-
Hopefully Onomah will be fit so the only change I'd make from the Norwich line up would be De Laet for Hutton. Villa win
-
Lansbury played well, set up a couple of goals and had some attacking purpose about him.
-
2-0.
-
Away from home, live on Sky, what could go wrong?
0-2
-
Keinan Davis and Josh Onomah should both be fit for Friday’s clash with Bristol City – but Mile Jedinak looks set to miss out.
Davis has struggled with a hamstring injury since making a brilliant first start against Norwich City at the weekend.
Onomah came off in that Canaries game with a head issue.
But both Young Lions are looking like being available for the Robins encounter.
Jedinak, however, is struggling.
Steve Bruce said: “Keinan has had a niggling hamstring injury, which has hung over him all week really.
“He trained on Wednesday and was a little bit sore still. We will see how he is this morning. But I expect him to make Friday. Onomah will be fine.
“Jedinak is sick. He reported in sick this morning. We will see how he is. I doubt Friday will be right for him.”
-
A draw would be a positive result. I expect City to be in the play-off mix this season and its a tough place to play. 1-1. Hogan to get another for us. Baker for them ;)
-
We'll lose. The only person I work with who has an interest in football is a Bristol City supporter, he barely speaks unless of course Bristol City beat Aston Villa.
-
Mr Sox how very American of you. So is this game Aston Villa at Bristol City 😉
-
We only score 4 now.
4-0 Villa.
-
We need to treat all our matches as if we are at home and attack, not try desperately to draw 0-0 whenever we're away.
-
-
I'm really looking forward to this.
Unfortunately, due to our poor start, a draw will not be good enough to get us back on track. 5 points after 5 games in not promotion material.
Newcastle - who were used as our bench mark a week or so ago - had a worse start to last season than we have, and had 9 points after this game.
Bristol City are the kind of team we need to start beating, away from home, if we want to take this promotion lark seriously.
2-1 to us!
-
I thought it was a Villa manager press conference, who gives a shit about Granny shagger.
-
I think we can win this, we need back to back wins for confidence and the team is plenty good enough if Bruce continues with an attacking approach. Lets just hope he doesn't revert to type and keeps a winning formula going.
-
Play like we did last week but convert more of our chances and we win.

Welcome to the forum mate. Enjoy the game.
-
The Bristol fans aren't expecting much, other than their ground being taken over by Villa fans. It appears they have little to sing about..
We could have cheered every missed tackle, sung our hearts out at all the long balls that were gobbled up by the giants of Millwall's defence, chanted every City players name during our playing sideways among our defenders.
And it would not have made a scrap of difference. We were outplayed at Brentford and got a very fortunate equaliser. We didn't threaten Millwall more than a couple of times.
3-0 Villa win.
-
The law of averages dictate that we have to win away at some point, so hopefully the football Gods will be shining on us...by the power of McGrath let it be so. Villa win 2-1.
-
Logged in to WatchESPN to watch the match and then realised that today isn't Friday.

Welcome to the forum old boy, enjoy the game.
Bristol City 1 - Aston Villa 3
-
I'll be optimistic for once and go for a 2-1 win for the Villa - Hourihane and Hogan to get the weekend off to a cracking start!
-
It's on TV. We lose. Sorry.
-
Jedinak out, Hutton out and Davis a doubt for tomorrow night, according to Gregg Evans. Our forwards are cursed!
-
It's on TV. We lose. Sorry.
Have you forgotten about Colchester already? (wink)
-
Thinking Bruce doesn't intend playing Davis tomorrow ...... mention today of a hamstring issue ...sigh
-
Thinking Bruce doesn't intend playing Davis tomorrow ...... mention today of a hamstring issue ...sigh
Doesn't intend to or might not be able to?
-
Doesn't intend to is my guess ...we will go back to the cautious Villa and lose
-
He says Davis and Onomah should both be fine.
I think he might go with the team started save for Lansbury who played well. Hopefully Bree gets the nod.
-

Even though he is quoted as saying he wants to play him?
Yeah, ok.
-
Easy to say he wants to play him ....... lets see I just suspect Hogan will start
-
Easy to say he wants to play him ....... lets see I just suspect Hogan will start
Why shouldn't he play him?
-

Why shouldn't he play him?
I think he will play both.
-
Same team that started against Norwich for me, except for De Laet or Bree coming in for Hutton.
-
Aren't these a bit shit?
Stat fans, prepare to start tracking down our last four-for-four.
Them, 1 or 2. Us, =>4. Hogan 2, Terry, Davis.
-
<4 =3(plus or minus 1) against 2(plus or minus 1)= win or draw.Or lose.
-
It's going to be a cracker. Lots of goals.
-
1-1
-
0-2 and the march to the top of the league is well & truly on!
UTV!
-
We really need to be winning this sort of game if we're serious about promotion.
I actually have a good feeling, 0-2.
-
I think a 2-1 win & the start of of an unbeaten run that will propel up the league!
-
We're Aston Villa, we always score four.
-
Easy to say he wants to play him ....... lets see I just suspect Hogan will start
He said he's undroppabel after the Norwich game. He'll play if he's fit
I'd just play de Laet for Hutton, and don't mind too much if Lansbury gets in ahead of Onomah as he seemed to play well
I wonder if he's going to go 352 though. He rested Samba but played both Bree and de Laet despite Hutton being injured. He talked about 352 on talk sport, though only really because allardyce asked him about it
We do need to start getting some clean sheets too, but I'd prefer to keep going. If Davis isn't fit however, we'll struggle to make the same game plan work
-
BBC says Davis is doubtful for the game. If we play Hogan up front I'd like to see us try playing Lansbury just behind him. He caused havoc for Forest more or less playing up front last season and Hogan needs some support.
-
Did Angela really cause havoc in that position for forest last season?
I think he scored theee goals from open play and got a couple of assists?
-
If there's one worry, it's thats we look at bit vunerable at the back. We do need to tighten it up a bit. I'll go for 2-2.
-
I voted for a Villa win before I read that Crash Davis is doubtful. Without him a draw is the most likely outcome.
-
Bruce expects him to be fit
But it's villa so I'll believe it when I see it
-

Hogan seems to have done well with O'Hare just in behind him so that is the way I would go if Davis is not fit.
-
2-2
-
2-1 defeat, back to reality.
-
Bruce expects him to be fit
But it's villa so I'll believe it when I see it
The Ron Vlaar Rule: Villa player doubtful = won't play, probably won't be seen for several weeks or months.
The Daniel Sturridge Rule: Opposition player doubtful = will start, play ninety minutes and score at least once.
-

The Daniel Sturridge Rule: Opposition player doubtful = will start, play ninety minutes and score at least once Then be out injured for the next 2 months.
Edited for accuracy.
-
2-2.
-
Just can't call this match, could go either way so a fence sitting draw
-
High scoring draw....we take the lead and go further ahead they then score quickly then brown trouser time with a dodgy scrappy equaliser in added time.....thanks ref
-
They're pretty weak up top, so I'd be surprised if its a draw if there were many goals.
-
One good result might look fortunate - two begins to look like carefulness. And three would be pretty fecking great.
I still think he needs to stick to the system which allows Hourihane to make the breaks from midfield, as freeing him up was a revelation last weekend. If we can invade the spaces between their defence and midfield, we'll cause problems.
-
The result is not as important as the performance, it's crucial the approach and attitude demonstrated over the last two games continues, should it not then even a scrappy defensive 1-0 win will see the doom soon descend again after the short term joy of gaining the points.
Pragmatists may point out that a win is a win and in most circumstances I would agree but tonight could be a bellwether for the rest of the season.

Nah, this is bollocks. Any sort of win would be fantastic for keeping the momentum going and getting the confidence up. We're not going to move from one of the worst away records in memory to blowing teams away over night. Bristol are in excellent form and any sort of result would be welcome today.

They're not in excellent form at all. They've got one point more than we have.
-
3-2 to us.

They also knocked a Premier League club out of the cup in the week.
And if us sticking four past Wigan is evidence that our form is improving (and it should be), then so is them beating Watford.
-
I really hope Davis plays. Up against Baker with both knowing each others strengths and Davis knowing he's twice as quick as Baker, more skillful and stronger and not made of glass.
-
They're in excellent form apart from matches against Small Heath. The ******.
-
everything's in place for the big beard to have as stormer
-
We owe these for failing us on the last day of last season. Still, 2-0.

It was their Reserves side. The team we face tonight will be very similar to the one that drew 0-0 at home to Millwall.
-
And Wigan was our reserve side. The team we put out will be similar to the one that battered Norwich but tends to disappear in away games.

Indeed. And every one of our games to date has been against a side who have a good chance of getting in the play offs
Brizzle have played Barnsley, blues, Brentford and millwall
If Davis is genuinely fit I reckon we should win.
-
M5 is already backed up to around J14
My normal route to south Bristol involves one or two junctions of the M5.
I'm not going to risk that today. I'm going M4, M32 and then working my way round into Bedminster

Looking at an attendance of over 100,000 if traffic is backed up already.

Indeed but I expect us to turn up tonight and start showing what we're capable of. I'm pretty confident of a good performance and three points.
-
Really need to win this.

Leaving Birmingham city centre in about half an hour. Is M5 the only route?

A38 is possible. We're currently in Cheltenham and so far it's slow on the M42 and parts of the M5.
-
M5 is now looking OK as far as Almondsbury. Suggested route from there on Googlemaps is currently M4(Eastbound), M32
I'd say to head down the M5 but keep an ear on the radio
-
Defining moment for Villas season tonight.
-
Have we really lost 10 of our last 14 away games?
That's so bad. Makes me a bit less optimistic about tonight

By my reckoning, since the draw at Brighton our away league record is W3 D1 L12. The wins were Rotherham, Wigan and QPR and the draw was Burton.
-
Bristol City 0 Villa 3 - Baker o.g 3, Baker o.g. 7, Lansbury (pen - conceded by Baker) 9. Baker goes off injured after 10.

If we can win by 4 we will be in the playoffs 😊

I've just come home to Portishead from Worcester, it's backed up completely from J17 (Cribbs Causeway) to J19 (Portishead), (I went through Clifton to get home), and I'm sure it will get worse before it gets better. That's probably not much help at this stage- only advice is whatever route you're trying, get off the M5 before J17.
I'll be getting the bus to the match later, looking forward to it. Safe journey all who are going, hope you all make it in time.
-
I intend to be on the 16:49 from Bath and in the Tobacco Factory by 6pm.
Hope those on the roads don't have too many problems.
-
M5/4/32 clear into Bristol an hour ago.
-
Given that I can't make it tonight, would someone mind confirming our rating from 1-7.

On which note, not seen Glenn Peen for a while.......
-
Took me four hours to get to J3 of the M5. An hour and a little bit later I'm in Brizzle.
-

Yup, I came via the M4 but dived off the M32 a junction from the end and came in via Bedminster.
SligoTom came via M5 and Portway on an official coach. Sounds like they had a decent run
-
I'm expecting the last mile of the journey to take a good hour.

I have to run the M5 gauntlet tomorrow morning.

If you are down all weekend then feel free to pop along to H+V Burnham on Sea tour on Saturday!
-
Oh we do H+V beside the seaside?
-
Massive game for Bruce this, it's his chance to show the fans that we can play more openly away from home and not be negative. If he reverts to type and we lose then he can have no excuses.
-
Looks like we've got 3-5-2 for this as Samba is starting alongside Terry and Chester.
Surprise is Hogan isn't upfront, looks like Green will play off Davis. Onomah, Hourihane and Whelan the midfield.
-
Why disrupt the formation and play Samba?
Gabby on bench??
-
5-3-2 with Samba, interesting!?
-
Bench is Steer, Gabby, Hogan, Adomah, Lansbury, Bjarni and Bree.
-
He's playing three centre backs, Samba, Terry and Chester. Davis up front
-
Think he's desperate for that away clean sheet. When did we last keep one, Rotherham?
At least if we do that we won't lose yet another away game and fairly sure with Hourihane in good form we can nick a goal at some stage.
-
Potentially 343...
Chester Terry Samba
Elmo Whelan Onomah Taylor
Green Davis Hourihane
-
or 541...
Chester Terry Samba
Elmo Taylor
Whelan Onomah
Green Hourihane
Davis
...or 532...
Chester Terry Samba
Elmo Taylor
Whelan Onomah Hourihane
Green Davis

Nope. I am pretty sure that is defensive minded wing backs and Green playing off Davis. The midfield will play deep is my worry.

Staying in Bristol I think but will ax my comrade.

Samba starts, 3 at the back.

Set us up not to lose by the looks of it. Hope he proves me wrong.
