Title: Colchester United vs Aston Villa (League Cup) Pre-Match Thread
Post by: cdbearsfan on August 07, 2017, 10:03:34 AM
Wednesday 9th August. 7.45pm kickoff. Live on telly. What could possibly go wrong?

Getting pretty sick of embarrassing cup exits year after year. A convincing four or five nil triumph without getting into second gear would be nice, but I'll settle for any scrappy win. Just do not fuck it up, for once, pretty please.

I expect Johnstone will be "rotated", and I'd probably rest Terry and Whelan. Other than that, we should be looking to play a pretty much full-strength team.

I'll go for us to win one-nil, with a Hogan winner on 79 minutes after Steer saves a penalty on 62.

If we do get through, we will be seeded in the Second Round if at least one team that finished above us last year gets knocked out.

Changes to the side that will mean an appearance for Micah Richards leading to a repeat of last year.

Sorry I can't be anymore optimistic.

We should win this comfortably, and I wouldn't be resting anybody this early as they all need sharpening up.  I'd go 4-3-3 as follows:

Johnstone
Hutton Chester Terry Taylor
Lansbury Whelan Hourihane
Elmohamady Agbonlahor Green

Sorry I can't be anymore optimistic.

I hope he plays and has a blinder encouraging a club to make an offer for him. Unlikely to happen but I think we will win in extra time 1-2.

Elmohamady

Onomah

I would definitely play Hogan to see if he could a goal or two to help his confidence.  Terry and Whelan are the only two I would consider resting and it would probably be worth giving Steer a game at this point, so would go with a side of:

Steer
Hutton
Chester
Samba
Taylor

Elmohamady
Lansbury
Hourihane
Green

Hogan
Agbonlahor

Can see Bruce making a lot of changes though.

Samba deserves game time, Adomah needs to get match sharp so he can compete with Elmo. Hourihane should be starting anyway, and Bjork needs a chance.

Bruce saw Richards play centre back against Shrewsbury, he can't be dumb enough to play him in a competitive game having seen that debacle. If we play Richards we will lose, and Bruce should be handed his P45.

We have a 100% record against them away from home, though we have never played at their current ground.

1974-75 League Cup Quarter-Finals: Colchester 1 Villa 2 (Villa went on to win cup and gain promotion)

1979-80 League Cup Second Round, 1st Leg: Colchester 0 Villa 2
2nd Leg: Villa 0 Colchester 2 (AET, Villa won 9-8 on penalties).

We don't seem to have ever met in the FA Cup or the League.

'Fun' facts about Colchester. They've averaged 10K once, their first league season in 1951. They've only spent 2 seasons in division 2. Their best major cup runs are 1 QF in both the FAC and LC. Their record transfer fee paid is £400K. And their record attendance is 19,042.

Hourianne for Landsbury

Colchester chariot racing arena used to attract crowds of 15k.
But as the Colchester popular front say "Apart from chariot racing arenas what did the Romans ever do for us ? "

I'm going for 0-3 or 1-3. If I'm right then enjoy it as it will probably be the only game this season where we score three goals.

God help SB if the score was 1-3 tonight, the misanthropy on here would go into a frenzy with the one goal conceded.

Why did we force Ads out? We all agree with the team he's picking now, but when he was in charge it was nothing but "WE'RE NOT FICKLE, WE JUST DON'T LIKE ADS" banners and, admittedly hilarious, chants questioning his parentage.

I hope you're all proud of yourselves.

Once you get a taste of Ads, no the Ads, you all come back. Eventually.

Just concentrate on your point of view and allow others to have theirs. You needn't lose any of your teddies.

Weather looks terrible around the Colchester area, heavy rain, flooding and thunderstorms. Could the match be in doubt?

?🤔

...in student digs are of a female tennis player scratching her arse?

I used to know a bloke who claimed he had shagged her!

There's a good chance, the shot was taken at Edgbaston and she resided in the city.
I'm not joining in this it's too classy and highbrow for my liking.

I've retired. Forced out is how it was positioned. My record last year started well and faded faster than an Aston Villa team in the second half of a game.

Hope the pitch doesn't make it a "leveller", then we really are in trouble. It's bound to impede the fast, high speed passing game we are used to.
