Wednesday 9th August. 7.45pm kickoff. Live on telly. What could possibly go wrong?
Getting pretty sick of embarrassing cup exits year after year. A convincing four or five nil triumph without getting into second gear would be nice, but I'll settle for any scrappy win. Just do not fuck it up, for once, pretty please.
I expect Johnstone will be "rotated", and I'd probably rest Terry and Whelan. Other than that, we should be looking to play a pretty much full-strength team.
I'll go for us to win one-nil, with a Hogan winner on 79 minutes after Steer saves a penalty on 62.
If we do get through, we will be seeded in the Second Round if at least one team that finished above us last year gets knocked out.
-
Changes to the side that will mean an appearance for Micah Richards leading to a repeat of last year.
Sorry I can't be anymore optimistic.
-
2-1 defeat.
-
We should win this comfortably, and I wouldn't be resting anybody this early as they all need sharpening up. I'd go 4-3-3 as follows:
Johnstone
Hutton Chester Terry Taylor
Lansbury Whelan Hourihane
Elmohamady Agbonlahor Green
-
1-4
Does it really matter what minutes and whom.
-
Steer
Bree
Chester (c)
Samba
Amavi (unless he's gone by then)
Green
Hourihane
Bjarnason
Elmohamady
Onomah
Davis

This for me as well, pretty much a full strength team confidence builder for cardiff
-
Steer
Bree, Samba, Chester, Taylor (De Laet if available?)
Adomah, Onomah, Hourihane, Green
Barny
Hogan
-
2-1 Villa win for me fingers crossed.

I hope he plays and has a blinder encouraging a club to make an offer for him. Unlikely to happen but I think we will win in extra time 1-2.
-
Steer
Bree
Samba
Richards
Someone
Someone
Odomah
Hourihane
Green
Hepburn Murphy
Hogan
I Expect something like that.
-
I'd like to be a bit more attacking.
RUSH GOALIE Bacuna
DEF Amavi
MID Lansbury
MID El Mohamady
ATT Davies
ATT Onomah
ATT Agbonlahor
ATT Hogan
ATT Hepburn-Murphy
ATT Green
ATT Samba
-
Them 1 Us 5, Bacuna 8, 44, 77, 80, 90+2
-
Steer
Bree
Chester (c)
Samba
Amavi (unless he's gone by then)
Green
Hourihane
Bjarnason
Elmohamady
Onomah
Davis
I would definitely play Hogan to see if he could a goal or two to help his confidence. Terry and Whelan are the only two I would consider resting and it would probably be worth giving Steer a game at this point, so would go with a side of:
Steer
Hutton
Chester
Samba
Taylor
Elmohamady
Lansbury
Hourihane
Green
Hogan
Agbonlahor
Can see Bruce making a lot of changes though.
-
I'd give Bree a start, and I reckon he'll give Bjork a start.
-
Please not extra time - that's all I ask
-
Steer
Bree
Samba
Richards
Someone
Someone
Odomah
Hourihane
Green
Hepburn Murphy
Hogan
I Expect something like that.
Sadly, the Someone brothers are both suspended.
-
Have Onomah and Adomah morphed into 1 player?
-
0-4

Have Onomah and Adomah morphed into 1 player?
The Mah brothers
First brothers to play in the same Villa team since the Djemba twins
-
Just need to sign Nomaaaahhhh*
*Probably only MrSox will get that.
-
Will be similar to Luton last season. I always say start with your strongest team ensure the victory then make your subs
-
Should start with the strongest line up possible.
-

I'm not sure we will be able to sign eleven new players by Wednesday.

Steer
Bree
Samba
Chester
Taylor
Bjork
Hourihane
Whelan
Adomah
RHM? If fit otherwise Gabby
Hogan
Samba deserves game time, Adomah needs to get match sharp so he can compete with Elmo. Hourihane should be starting anyway, and Bjork needs a chance.
-
Looking forward to another new ground. I'm expecting Villa to knock that out of me fairly quickly.
-
Im expecting SB to play
Steer
Bree Richards (if fit ) Elphick Taylor
hutton Whelan Bacuna thaw
Samba Agbonlahor
onomah to come off the bench and nick it in ET

Very good.

Hogan
lets hope and then Reading will want him even more

UKR we could make it a four timah.
Adomah, Onomah, Sambah and Bacunah
These are the boys that are going to do us fine
If you support the City...etc. etc.

Could also be sung to the tune of the dreadful 'Kokomo'

Not forgetting we can use Wankah to cover some of the others.

Bruce saw Richards play centre back against Shrewsbury, he can't be dumb enough to play him in a competitive game having seen that debacle. If we play Richards we will lose, and Bruce should be handed his P45.
-
A straight forward win with no fuckin about. No excuses.
-
I've gone for the worst possible outcome, that way I'll be very pleasantly surprised whatever we do!
Extra time loss.
-
This lot lost 3-1 to Accrington Stanley (exactly) at the weekend - failure to win is not an option. Absolutely no excuses.

Cue a thoroughly convincing victory for the hosts.
-
Not one of the negatives will put a penny on a Colchester win, it's just too easy to follow.
-
1.3. On route to Wembley
-
Them 1 Us 5, Bacuna 8, 44, 77, 80, 90+2
Utterly ridiculous!
Bacuna will have been subbed after his 4th goal as SB battens down the hatches
-
Just need to sign Nomaaaahhhh*

Pakh Ya Kah In Hahvad Yahd
wicked awesome dude.
We will win 2-0 having missed enough chances to rack up a cricket score.
-
Can see us getting beat, like Luton last season.
-
A solid away performance and a 2-0 win to the Villa. Will go for Hogan and Taylor to get the goals.
-
Of course we will win, wont we ????
-
5-0 Villa
-
Win please. I'd like us to have a decent go in one of the cups. Last season was pathetic.
-
It should be easy but we will do our best to not make it that way. A spluttering performance will see us home.
-
I know this is a new season and so form guide is irrelevant but we have only won 1 game in our last six and that was against you know who. We need to win this and win it well or we might start getting jumpy
-
We have a 100% record against them away from home, though we have never played at their current ground.
1974-75 League Cup Quarter-Finals: Colchester 1 Villa 2 (Villa went on to win cup and gain promotion)
1979-80 League Cup Second Round, 1st Leg: Colchester 0 Villa 2
2nd Leg: Villa 0 Colchester 2 (AET, Villa won 9-8 on penalties).
We don't seem to have ever met in the FA Cup or the League.
-
9-8 on pens! Is it our highest scoring penalty shoot-out ever?
-
'Fun' facts about Colchester. They've averaged 10K once, their first league season in 1951. They've only spent 2 seasons in division 2. Their best major cup runs are 1 QF in both the FAC and LC. Their record transfer fee paid is £400K. And their record attendance is 19,042.
-
As always any team combination sent out should really be enough to blow these away
As usual on TV we will make either hard work of it or a complete pigs ear
Please Steve no more excuses
I would play
Steer for Johnstone
and only change Terry for Samba
Hourianne for Landsbury

Colchester chariot racing arena used to attract crowds of 15k.
But as the Colchester popular front say "Apart from chariot racing arenas what did the Romans ever do for us ? "

-
A shocking shit performance and 1-0 defeat.
I would pick 4-4-2
Johnstone
Bree
Taylor
Samba
Bedeau
Green
Bjarnasson
Hourahane
Onomah
Davis
Hogan
-
If he plays Bjork as a goal poacher (I know, I know) I think we should call him Dwight. We might not get any goals but we would get a bloody good song back.
-
If we lose Bruce might get the sack.
Runs.
-
Was the 9-8 penalty shoot out the one where Bozzie was arguing because he was expected to take a penalty before the outfield players had?
-

In 1980?!
-
Remember it well. He came racing out of his pushchair, pushed over Colchester's dangerous German toddler and goose-babystepped up to the Holte End in celebration.
-
I would play Samba for JT
houriane for the bun man
and the icelandic David Platt for Bacuna
-
Oops, I should have looked at the date first. I do remember the incident with Bosnich but no idea when.
-
Team news is late this evening.
-
The match is tomorrow.

The match is tomorrow.
Yep of course it is, I knew that. ::)
-
1979-80 League Cup Second Round, 1st Leg: Colchester 0 Villa 2
2nd Leg: Villa 0 Colchester 2 (AET, Villa won 9-8 on penalties).
Remember that first leg so well. Layer Road was rocking and you could feel the wooden floorboards creaking! and one of the best performances from a Villa striker I have ever seen
-
1-0 defeat. Meltdown.
-
1-0 defeat. Meltdown.
There's not a lot of happiness in your life is there?
-
Preston's elimination at Accrington means that we will be seeded if we get through. It also means that Colchester's defeat at the weekend to the same opposition doesn't seem quite as bad!
-
Less than 8K could be bothered remembering the way to the Sty tonight.

It's going to absolutely hoy it down all day tomorrow. I fear our elegant passing game may be no match for them belting it up front at every opportunity.
-
Colchester have an extremely young side looking at their squad list. Lewis Kinsella plays for them now. Just put £20 on us -1 goal.
-
I don't ask for much, other than a decent bit of pre match grub, a comfortable win in normal time, a swift getaway from the ground and back in my scratcher before 1am.
Make it so, Lord above

I'd like to see hourihane and both versatile midfielders Onomah and BB given a go in the middle v Colchester . Samba in defence Bree and Davis and perhaps Toner and Lyden too .

There's a good chance, the shot was taken at Edgbaston and she resided in the city.

Why did we force Ads out? We all agree with the team he's picking now, but when he was in charge it was nothing but "WE'RE NOT FICKLE, WE JUST DON'T LIKE ADS" banners and, admittedly hilarious, chants questioning his parentage.
I hope you're all proud of yourselves.

I'm going for 0-3 or 1-3. If I'm right then enjoy it as it will probably be the only game this season where we score three goals.

Fixed.

God help SB if the score was 1-3 tonight, the misanthropy on here would go into a frenzy with the one goal conceded.

Just concentrate on your point of view and allow others to have theirs. You needn't lose any of your teddies.

Weather looks terrible around the Colchester area, heavy rain, flooding and thunderstorms. Could the match be in doubt?

Hope the pitch doesn't make it a "leveller", then we really are in trouble. It's bound to impede the fast, high speed passing game we are used to.

Three pitch inspections but the game is on.
