Title: Happy 20th Birthday
Post by: Mac on March 31, 2017, 08:32:43 AM
I was a mere slip of a lad, cough, when I launched this website 20 years ago today.

No expections of what it would do, no idea that it would cause as many arguments as it has. Or how much time it would take up for so many people.

I may not be around as much as I used to but thanks to everyone who had helped make this the longest running Villa website in the world.

Happy Birthday heroesandvillains.net

Blimey, I'm fairly certain I'd never been on the Internet then, let alone been aware of what the hell a forum was! You were a visionary, sir. I tip my cap.

I reckon I was 4 or 5 years late to the party, so that's only about 15 or 16 years of my life wasted.

Congratulations and "thanks."

Cheers Mac.

I've been following the site for a large part of those 20 years and through various web platforms (not much of a poster as you can see).  Certainly back to the days of 'mad Rob,' Malcolm Everall and the VT guys before they split.  I still chuckle at some of the rows over the years.

H&V has undoubtedly grown to be by far the best fan site I have ever read.  Although TBAR and Admin ran you close at one point...

Many congratulations, it's some achievement.

I think I first started following the site around 99 or so, maybe a little later but there or thereabouts. Speaking as someone who has no real links to birmingham this place has helped me feel "closer" to the club than i may have otherwise felt. Not to mention the everyone I've met directly through here, who have been to a person (almost, *cough*) great people.

Here's to another, hopefully more successful, 20.

I started reading the forum when I was at uni in 98 so I reckon I'm at about the same.  I'd love to see, if it exists, a screenshot from the original site.

Someone else said it above, but what a vision you had back then and how refreshing H&V is, in the world of football fan sites.

Superb achievement.

Huge thanks from me go to you and the team who keep it going, as well. UTV!

Hmmm, must have been around 2001 when I became a H&Ver.
It's been brilliant (and frustrating, amusing, uplifting, irritating, obsessional, informative, supportive, petty, outrageous, angered, sarcastic, triumphal, focussed, campaigning, international, broad-minded, divisive ...).
Know what I mean?
Thanks to all that made it thus.

Congratulations and thank you all involved, in particular Mac and Dave.

There can't be many achievements over the last 20 years that Villa fans can look back on with pride, but this site is most certainly one.

Sadly my employers might not share that sentiment, as probably one of the main sources of distraction I can attribute my lack of productivity to. But who gives a shit, they've just paid me off so I'm off out on the piss to celebrate.

H&V - I was going to say that you're my favourite waste of time, but that does a great disservice to what you actually provide.  The intelligence and erudition displayed on here make it a haven from other areas of the net. It's also funny and passionate; a place where opinions and differences are generally argued in a reasoned manner. I sometimes wonder if it would lose something of what makes it great if we had a successful team to follow...

Happy 20th birthday and thank you to everyone who keeps the show on the road.

I started reading the fanzine in 98 I think (first article I read was on Brian Little leaving) but only really started looking at this site in 2004.

Been plenty of highs and lows hasn't there during that time. I do long for the day we finally win something again just so I can read the glorious threads on here in the days afterwards.

Great site anyway, it does feel like a family on here even though I've only met the odd person on here face-to-face.

Didn't use the site until around 2007-ish but read the fanzine from maybe 1989, can't really remember, there was the Witton Wisdom, Missing Sid and Holy Trinity, possibly some others but Heroes and Villains always stood head and shoulders above the rest when it came to Villa matters.

A real thanks to all those who have been involved both online and fanzine wise as it's been a part of my life for nearly 30 years. Here's to many more, Up The Villa.
