I was wondering... if Jordan Ayew had stayed with us this transfer window and - as seems quite possible - Ghana win the African Cup of Nations, would he have been the first Villa player to win an international tournament with his country?
I remember Kent Nielsen won Euro 92 with Denmark but I'm pretty sure Ron Atkinson had sold him earlier that year. So that doesn't count. Both David Platt and Ron Vlaar reached World Cup semi-finals whilst Aston Villa players... but has anyone actually won a trophy with their nation whilst being a Villa player..?

Only the Home Nations Tournament I think.
-
Has one of our Australian or American players won their equivalent of the European Championships?
I'm thinking Aussies are the best bet.
-
Colombia won the Copa America in 2001 but, according to Wikipedia, they did so without Juan Pablo Angel.

Herd is listed as having won the Asian Cup, he didn't actually play any matches though, was just part of the squad, as he got injured in the warm-up before their second game.
Other than that Vassell won the FA Summer Tournament, Steve H**** won the Rous Cup and numerous Villa players won the Home International Championship, most recently Cowans and Withe in 1983 unless we had any Ulstermen that I've forgotten the season after.
Kieran Clarke and Richard Dunn won the Celtic Nations Cup, I think. They played in the opening group games in February 2011 but the final games weren't until the following May. I assume they got medals though.
Dwight Yorke won the Caribbean Cup on 9th July 1989 but I don't know if he'd actually signed for us yet.
I'm sure our players have probably won a fair few other minor tournaments, too.

Gareth Southgate played every minute of that bullshit Tournoi de France for England in 1997. That one where Roberto Carlos scored that ridiculous free kick that scared the shit out of that ballboy.
-
We have only ever had one player on our books who can boast a World Cup winners medal........Robert Pires. Obviously not while he was with us.
-
If you're including tournaments won when not with us then add...
Euros: Six, Schmeichel, Nielsen, Pires.
Asian Cup: Jedinak.
Afcon: Djemba-Djemba.
CONCACAF Gold Cup: Guzan.

Was there not an Oceanian Cup that Australia would have won most times before they joined the Asian Confederation?
Thinking Bosnich could have won one.
-
We almost signed Juninho 3 years BEFORE he won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002. He was over for talks and everything. Does that count?
-
Double post!

Thinking Bosnich could have won one.
He was never part of their winning squads.
-
Was Der Hammer in Germany's Euro 96 squad? Moreover, was he with us at the time...

Which Bosnich? Talksports former Chelsea and Manchester United legend Bosnich; or the one who played for Aston Villa?

He was 14 years old in 1996. He joined us in 2000.

I think he joined afterward but I'm pretty sure that Didier Six was part of the French Euro Championship winning squad. One of the best debuts ever, it was all pretty much downhill after that mind.

Yeah, for the whole fucking club!

In the squad and played in most games but not the final. Bit of a Jimmy Greaves experience in '66 I guess.

Pires won the World Cup before he joined us as well didn't he?

Yes, about 40 years before, judging by his performances.

I was at the final game, a 1-0 defeat to Brazil at the Parc des Princes. The trophy was presented after the game so I have seen England lift a trophy.
