Title: Villa at Goodison
Post by: usav on December 02, 2016, 08:52:33 PM

A match I missed our first away win back in Div 1 1976 the saturday after Man City away Brian  Little breaking the deadlock.

1981 3-1 at Woodison four scousers in the Villa Team plus an ex Everton McNaught.  Set us on the way to the title

and of course Stone and Carbone  in the 1/4 final in 2000

Plus of course the Danes goal in the Gladys Street right at the end of the game

Best Villa atmosphere though was the end  of season game the 3-3 with Tony Casc  scoring

For me, the stand out game was the 3-3 last game of the season in 1990 after Graham Taylor had taken us to 2nd in the league. (we were challenging for the title up until the last month or so when we blew up).  Coupled with the 3-2 win at Sheffield Wednesday in Big Rons first game, I think it was the best away support I've experienced.

I was at the 3-1 when Morley won the goal of the season which was also a great day, even if the memories of that one are a tad jaded now.

Also, was a fantastic performance under Big Ron when we fielded 9 black players and won 2-0.

I always enjoyed Goodison, a great away trip

Went to the 3-0 defeat in 2014 so not great memories.

We did always used to do well there when MON was manager.....that 3-2 with Young scoring the winner which I think was 8 years ago this weekend of course is the first game I remember.

Could anyone post a video of that...Legion....

The Carbone QF was my last away game before leaving the U.K.....not counting the SF and debacle in the final.

Where's the video of Young's last minute winner?

I remember, as a youth, Fashunu scoring(maybe he didn't) on his debut there. First game of 94-95? I remember Gregory's team running riot in 98, too.

I have to say Everton are probably the only Premier League team I have never hated. Some good mates are Everton fans, and I've always seen them as similar to us. Just not as classy.

You wouldn't say  that if you went there in  the  70's plus they have got a bit of the SH syndrome of being extremely  bitter.  Certainly not a bigger club than the Villa.

You're probably right about the 70's thing. I was just being thought up as an idea by my mum and dad about that point!

The bitter thing I can kind of understand. Imagine sharing a city with that horrid lot from Liverpool. It must be awful. At least our neighbours are all shit and very very very very rarely ever successful.

2005-06, early ko & late arrival, police escort for the coach through the traffic, arrived at 0-1, lost 1-4, sh*t game but great day out. Gabby's first goal for us I think. Free pies at the end and the p*ss take songs about DoL throughout the game

Moyes struggled to get the better of O'Neill in our games but they always(?) finished ahead of us during the hat-trick of sixths.

Your mum and dad if they went the aways 40 odd years ago would probably know me and other posters on here. Scary thought.

Whenever Villa played Everton, my MiL always used to remember her friend from the war years. Her name was Muriel Thomason and she lived on Muriel St right next to Goodison Park.

I also loved that house near the ground that had a chippy in the front room.

You're forgetting our record there in the 90s too, we regularly did the double over them.

1993 Whittingham debut goal in the green and black Muller kit
1996 Ehiogu 1-0 white AST kit
1998 4-1 thrashing, Yorke got two and even Charles got one
2001 Merson lob in last minute of game

Had a ticket for the Ashley Young 2-3 match, but my Grandad died in the week running up to the match, so ended up not going. Despite the fact I missed one of the great Villa moments of the past couple of decades, it still cheered us up after a horror of a week.

Remember going to this one ( evening game?) and it was at the time when Refs used to wear green shirts and black shorts. I'm sure the ref and linesmen changed into white Everton away shirts in the second half.

sure that was a saturday game.  Terrible  spec, crap ground, used to be  a dangerous place to  visit  - just don't like em.

I remember their fans giving Southgate grief all game long for the penalty miss from the Euros, so that must have been at the start of the 96-97 season.  I don't remember the result.

my Daughter and I were at the Ashley Young 2-3 match in 2008. Unfortunately we were guests of an Evertonian so on our best behaviour in the VIP section, but the smiles on our faces couldn't be disguised as we left our seats at the end after Young scored the winner straight after Lescott scored the second equaliser, sheer joy!

Definitely an evening game in late August or early September and yes the officials changed into white kits. We went the year before when Mo Johnson got an 89th minute winner so it was great to get a win up there just after.

The visit I always remember (but not too clearly) was an FA Cup 3rd round match late 70's/early 80's. We lost 4-1 but I was so drunk I thought we had won 1-0 having fallen asleep in the toilets for most of the match. We drank in the Everton supporters club before and after having a marvellous time (despite a fracas with some scallies right after the match). We always seemed to get on with Evertonians until a few years ago when they turned snotty on us.

The FA cup match was Jan  78 - We were supposed to have been playing them a  week after in the league but the game got postponed with me having  travelled up from London already reached Stafford.

The FA game was naff  we  were terrible.  If I remember the Chelsea v Liverpool game kicked off at 2pm and the Evertonians were overjoyed  because  Chelsea won 4-1 or 4-2.

We hit a bit of a blip in 78 sorry JJ but your dad  didn't help running away to Wolves.

The highlights  that season were the Bilbao and Barcelona games.

Well obviously 3-3 stands out...

But 0-1 I think the following season where we kind of had a watered down half-time version of the 3-3 game with half-time singing. Plus Platt cleared off the line but it was a (I think ) header from Mountfield that was going in for 1-1. Platt somehow managed to hook the ball back from the goal line as he tried to prod it in.

2-0 win I think in 91-92 (or maybe the year after) when we played well. Sure Tony Daley scored a nice goal in that one.

Other than that the 3-2 Ashley Young game was simply triffic.

One of our best results there, was in the old League Cup 1974, when we beat them in a replay 3 - 0 having drawn 1 - 1 at VP.

We were in the old 2nd Division and the great Ron had just taken over as boss. We then went on to win the League Cup and get promoted.

It was a Tuesday night, if memory serves.

The 3-3 end of season was magnificent, but my favourite by miles was when Merson banged the last minute winner.

We didn't take many, live on Sky on Bonfire Night. We were in the lower Bullens and it pissed down on us all game, those exposed choose to sing relentlessly a thorough catalogue of songs from days gone by to stave of the boredom from the lack of action on the pitch.

I'm pretty sure it was the first time "My old man...." rear its head for years, it was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon despite everything around us trying to spoil it, and then bang, right at the death a stroke of genius wins it.

Glorious.

I always seem to treat myself to a restricted view when I watch us at Goodison. Yorke's woeful display in the last away game of the season before he wrapped his bangers in and joined another club stands out for me. I was also there when Fash the Bash made his debut.

That Fashanu debut game was first match of the season wasn't it? Exciting 2-2 draw. I remember two lovable Evertonian urchins outside beforehand bemoaning the fact that the Villa team was 'full of n***ers.'

1976/7 in August. Villa won 2-0, great display. I was sat in the Upper Bullens and several hundred Villa fans were led out of the Park End of the ground by the police with about 10 minutes to go. Never seen that before or since - maybe for their own protection.

this really is one of them wish I was there games. First  away victory back in Div 1 (took us over a season but nevermind).  I had an altercation at Maine  Road  a few  days before when I got battered and my mum barred me from going.

I was there . There was some Everton in the end early on and Villa chased them on the pitch .

By 3 pm we were totally surrounded with the scousers here Scousers there chant and Villa where are you .Any Villa identified was given a right kicking  when the 2nd goal went it it was murders and loads left .

The Cup game we had barely 400 there due to the fixture change and a rail strike we would have been clattered only for the old lads coming up on a coach .
The league cup game when Richardson scores was pure evil

I've been to Goodison twice and saw two last minute winners.  Merson 1-0 in 2001 and Young 3-2 in 2008.

Great memories of Goodison in general. Funny what you remember and what you forget. I was there when Fashanu played where I think for some reason the away section was split in two? Am I right? I also remember Mo bloody Johnstone scoring against us. Typical when someone cant score against anyone he scores against us.

Mersons Lob, the 2 v 0 under Big Ron, plus others. My favourite away ground by far, despite the fact the escalators never seemed to work when I was sat upstairs and its so steep celebrating a goal properly is a hazard!
