David, it's not that we are fickle, we still just don't like you. Call me a sugarbag if you like but I know a crap, lazy manager when I see one!

We played some nice football in that 2003-04 season, and he got the best out of Angel. But I never really warmed to him, I don't know why. I don't hate the bloke, but he never seemed to get what Villa are about. He seemed to view us as a bang average club, which I found irritating.

Oh well, he's never going to be a manager of a top club again. Interesting read, though. Cheers, Matt C.

I think we went a long way to stuffing up his future prospects with the ''we're not fickle...." banner.  Chairmen notice that sort of thing.

Once he got overlooked a few times he was suddenly yesterday's man, see also Alan Curbishley.

Grade A tosser too.

Record-wise not the worst manager we've had. But you'd be hard pressed to find a more dislikeable one.

Couldn't be arsed with minor details like when we actually last won a trophy when he was getting his excuses in. Combined with the impression he was always doing us a favour just by being there. We've had far bigger, successful managers than him who never gave off that vibe.

Sounds like he has his dream job now. Talking to old Arsenal tosspots about how great he was.

I never liked him

But you can watch highlights from his first season on YouTube and I honestly think some of the footballl we played was first best since Brian little - better than mon's team just without the same cash to back it up on real quality

The only manager we've had whilst I've been a season ticket holder that I've genuinely disliked.

Was always banging on about Leeds. Wake up O'Leary, we're a lot bloody bigger than them!

I agree. The Leicester, Chelsea and Blues home matches, we played some excellent stuff.

It's no wonder he hasn't aged, he probably got a nice pay-off from us and christ knows what he was getting paid in Dubai.

Ten years on and this odious pug-nosed little piss-ant still makes my skin crawl.  Bloody Leeds-this, Arsenal-that.  We can't compete with the likes of Charlton!  Sod off.

The Villa ain't complicated, but this prick just did not get it.  You don't feel like that about Bruce, he seems to appreciate the stature of the club, even when we're halfway down the second division.

Forest v Newcastle  tonight. Forest are capable of a point if not all 3 fancy a draw in this one as Newcastle stutter. Makes villa match for the win tomorrow important.  A performance  like at Brighton would see all 3 points

We used to have managers that were not just good but really likeable - Little, Taylor, BFR.

But more recently O'Leary, Lambert, Sherwood. Even O'Neill was pretty snidey.

The Telegraph article goes on about how O'Leary is a good family guy. But it doesn't show both sides of the coin, the dirty sex pest.

Really pleased we now have Bruce. We're winning but he also seems like a stand up guy.

We have had worse managers but in my lifetime I can't recall a manager who treated both the club and it's supporters with contempt.

For that I always consider him the most objectionable to hold the position.

Sorry to go against the grain but one banner has never spoken for us all. I never really disliked him and thought that in relatively poor circumstances he did ok. I enjoyed some of the football and liked the squad of that era. Thought that time may have mellowed the views of others but it appears not!!

I can remember attending bodymore heath to watch the Villa train ahead of playing scum (3-1 Villa, Cahill's goal). After watching for a couple of hours, training finished and who came cycling in from the road but O Dreary. He missed the whole of the training session ahead of a big match because he was off cycling somewhere and we were paying him for that!!! He was f-cking useless. I can't remember who they were at the time, but don't underestimate the work of his coaches in our performances because O Dreary was contributing f-ck all in my opinion.

29th November 2005 0-3 v Doncaster Rovers FL Cup 4t Round on live TV.  Never have I ever wanted to put my fist through a TV screen more than when that pug faced twat came on screen afterwards supping a cup of tea in a styrofoam cup to face the post match interview.

Bearing in mind we had a 'great bunch of lads' that night that included Milner, Barry, Angel, Phillips, Melberg & Baros and he couldn't manage them past a League 1 side (Div 3 in old money)

Did a good job to bring us up to 6th from 16th but we got worse the more of his own players we brought in and his attitude was that it was everybody's fault but his. Should have been fired after Doncaster, not just for the spineless display on the pitch but the equally spineless post match interview.

sums him up perfectly for me KG. He did quite well with us- especially if you look at where we are now and ignore the O'Neill years. He's just such a dislikeable choice as Villa manager though. Nobody ever really warmed to him as I recall. No acknowledgement or apppreciarion for the club. Just I spent loads of money at Leeds. What do do you mean, who are leeds?

I'll never understand him. Given the situation at Villa in those days he didn't have to do anything much to get everyone onside. He didn't have to play the fans like Gregory, or come out with the one-liners a la BFR. Just keep his gob shut and let the anti-Ellis feeling do the rest. Instead he alienated us, the press, and eventually the players.

We always seemed to be his rebound relationship after his break-up with Leeds and I did hear that he never got over the fact that when they sacked Eddie Gray in 2004 they didn't beg him to return.

I think I've said before but my memory of him is at the pre season tournament in Dublin where he totally ignored his new clubs fans to give that Leeds stupid 'salute' as both teams walked out. It didn't go down well with our group if I remember right.

I think my view was slightly tainted as me and the wife picking Florence for a lovely romantic break only for it to coincide with it being chosen as a new venue as Hapoel Tel-Aviv needed to play them at a neutral ground. It may be a massive stereotype but my memory is of thick Yorkies shouting at Italians because the couldn't understand them.  I saw a grown man of about 50 years old in Leeds full kit wanker' mode pissed and abusing all and sundry. A truly horrible club.

Yeah same for me...he always seemed condescending about us in interviews even in his good first season (plenty of times he would just rattle on about Leeds or a lack of money in post match interviews).

Something you can put up with when the team is winning but not when we went to pot under him halfway through his reign which meant the famous banners came out.

Second half of the season was fantastic, we weren't far off making the top 4 which was miraculous considering we were in the bottom 3 going into December.

A shame the old Villa mentality of bottling crucial games came to the fore....we really should've beaten Bolton over two legs in the cup but had a terrible first 30 minutes which cost us the tie and then messed up the Man. United game on the last day of the season which they finished with 9 men.

Results wise, he was one of the better managers we've had in the recent past.

That all gets overlooked though when you take into consideration what a total bell-end the pug-nosed ****** is.

MacLeish, sherwood, lambert all worse managers, but far more likeable. O'Neill was probably the only one to beat him in both the results and personality stakes.

The Charlton game that is being mentioned and quoted about I was actually there on a bday trip to London for the weekend. It was an horrendous 0-0 draw and sections of the away support were very vocal of there displeasure at what they were seeing.

O'Leary afterwards stated just because we are Aston Villa and won the European Cup 20 years ago it does not give us the right to be coming to places like Charlton and winning, and how fans needed to get into the real world that just because we were a big club it doesn't make us one now.

The game itself included an extraordinary 20 minute substitute cameo by J'Lloyd Samuel where he looked like a total clown with everything he did, the entire stadium including the Villa fans were laughing at him, he was a total trainwreck like he was on drugs.

Horrendous pr*ck of a man. Looked down on Villa like a piece of crap at the end of his shoe. Did the same at international level until Jack Charlton well and truly softened his cough.

Did well for the first couple of years on a shoestring budget so he definitely had management ability despite his odious personality. Solano, reintegrating JPA, Barry even McCann and Sorensen were solid signings on the cheap. Played good football too for the most of it. The last season was vile, didn't Arsenal do up by 5 or 6 near the end of it?

The run we went on in his first season was superb,  from bottom three to within a whisker of Europe, and that alone should mean he left us with some decent memories. The fact that he's more reviled than tossers like Lambert show just what a prick of a man he was though, with no redeeming features whatsoever. He's been peddling that "famous manager/player keeps asking when I'm coming back into football" act for years now. Nobody cares you pug-faced twot.

No didn't dream it Frank, it's a favourite of me and my brother to quote O'Leary when he said "we have a different agenda to Charlton" - You see that's the kind of shit someone who previously had no connection with Villa would come out with and assume we wouldn't take offence. Because we did take offence they then get all precious and say we're living off past glories or we're fickle. Christ that man was naive.

In footballing terms how is this man still even relevant?

There are probably bigger culprits but he's almost the ultimate footballing charlatan. I don't think anyone is critical enough of his period at Leeds with the amount of money Ridsdale spent and ultimately broke that club with. I'm not sure how much of a say O'Dreary had on signing the likes of Seth Johnson for something like 50k a week and can't be bothered looking up whether he even signed him. He was a hungry young manager who inherited some good young talented players, played some entertaining football, had a wild ride which eventually went tits up big style. Trophyless.

His time with Villa has been covered here already, one thing that Lambert has over him is that unlike so many former Villa bosses, he actually landed a half decent job after getting the arse from VP.

The line (to paraphrase) "I'd be interested, if the right job came up" is all the more comical considering he's been in charge of more than a dozen matches since he disappeared up his own arse as the bloke with the complimentary Arsenal suit.

Beckham has never struck me as the funny, smart arse type but I must admit him asking O'Leary where he'd been all these years may've changed that. There's probably a reason why he's reluctant to do interviews.
