Title: Forest
Post by: Andy_Lochhead_in_the_air on August 31, 2016, 09:48:16 PM
Notts Forest to give them their proper name.  ;)

Surprised we haven't played them for 17 years competitively.

Lots of games in the 70s/80s, we always took a good following.

The Franz Carr Cup Quarter Final and the home game on the championship run in are my best memories.

Franz Carr's goal was a screamer.  Signed from Leicester and did fuck all except score that goal.

I always think of 1991 and 1992 home games. The 1991 was the one where Yorke scored our goal of the season, we hit them on the break and he scored a curler past their keeper. 1992 was the game where Cyrille Regis scored with a lob over Mark Crossley.

The 1981 game and home win against them after the Ipswich defeat is the stand out game against Forest For me. Lose or draw that and Ipswich would have won the league

1989 - standing in the pouring rain all afternoon watching us getting tonked 4-0 singing 'Brian, Brian give us a slap' just a couple of days after cloughie got involved with some of their pitch invaders.

But a better memory in 1993 with McGrath heading in the only goal of the game in April and thinking we could now go on and win the league!

The 2-0 on Easter Saturday in 1981 for obvious reasons, but I also have a strong memory of the home game 6 months later when we beat them 3-1. Pouring rain, they were surprisingly dirty for a Clough team, and we finally triumphed through standing up to them physically and then outclassing them.

Re the original post, the best way to piss off a Forest fan is to refer to them as "Notts". That is reserved for Notts County.

Winning 4-1 at home a long time ago.
Losing 5-0 at home a long time ago.
Arriving 5 mins late, and being charged (non threateningly) and winning 3-1 in one of BFRs first games. Then coincidentally chatting to/up a girl in Leicester week later from Long Eaton who was a Forest fan who'd been the game.

The most important game against them without doubt the 1981 home game which kept our hopes alive of the Championship (the one we are going to win this season).

My first ever trip to the Trent saw us lose, got locked in and got escorted all around the ground for the return special - oh we lost 2-0 and played crap (Forest's first season back in the top division) - later that season we bladdered them at Villa Park and still lost 2-1.

One of those gaffs I just don't like.  Saying that so much admired Clough.

Remember being on cub camp when they stuffed us 4-0 in 88.  SGT said it was the most inept and disgraceful performance by any team he'd managed.  Those words stick in my mind for some reason.

As I am sure we all know, Forest (City Ground) and County (Meadow Lane) are the closest professional football stadiums in England. Located just a few hundred yards apart either side of the River Trent.

The eastern border of the unitary authority of the City of Nottingham runs along the Trent. Therefore the City Ground is in the County, and Notts County is in the City.

We got beat 4-2 in a league cup game one November night in 1977. It was a night when a rolling fog off the Trent obliterated large parts of the match.

This was the 2nd of 3 visits for me.  On this occasion I was sat in their main stand, level with the Trent End six yard line - am I right in remembering a Gordon Cowans penalty earned us a 1-1 draw ?

1992 was the game where Cyrille Regis scored with a lob over Mark Crossley.
It had been a pretty poor performance up to then and where we were in the top of the left side, the fans were making their own entertainment - well, I say fans, it was one man singing Could It Be Magic and dancing. But he was very good.

Was that the midweek game? If so me and my mate left really early and went into town and met a couple of girls we knew in the pub. For some reason we decided to tell them we had been thrown out rather than admit how crap we were, blaming it on drunken behaviour from another mate who stayed at the game but we said had been arrested.

The only other midlands club that I don't mind.

Have been to their ground quite a few times, but only once to see Villa-in the summer of 2012 when Lambert was first appointed. We played pretty craply, but had a great following, especially for a pre season friendly. If I recall correctly, Bannan scored a nice freekick.

My other times there were with my Leicester supporting dad(who also came to the 2012 pre season game)to watch Leicester play. My dad's best mate is a Forest fan, so he'd be in the home end. No matter who won, there were no hard feelings between my dad and his mate, and I never had an affinity with either team, even as a little kid. I eventually, aged 9, chose to support Villa due to my grandad.

Me and Damo70 were on the train in front so managed to get to the ground, we couldn't get in so strolled back to the station to be greeted by that bizarre sight. We crossed the road (we weren't wearing colours) for fear of getting thrown in with everyone else.

I still find it a bit difficult to believe really.

Did one of the Villa fans who was held as a 'political prisoner' that afternoon have a legal background and lead a group action to get some compo from the police? I have a vague recollection of it being a story in The Evening Mail some time afterwards.

Denis Howell took it up I think as well but got nowhere. Who would ever have believed the word of a group of football fans over the police in those days?

Haha. Hello Paul, mate. How are things? Hopefully you've had a good summer.

My dad was a gentleman last year. Since he first took me to Villa Park, he's been more interested in Villa than Leicester. Of course, being born in Leicester and leaving school to play at youth level for Leicester, he loves his 'blue boys' dearly. But Villa being relegated ruined his season, despite the title win. I felt a little guilty. Haha.

And he much prefers going to Villa Park than down Leicester. He often tells me about being pelted with coins by Villa fans at a Villa Leicester game in his youth!

Correct. I lived on both sides of the river during my 15 years living there. Trent Bridge Cricket Ground is very close to the City Ground as well.

The Forest fane get well narked if you call them Notts Forest.

I've just recently tied the knot to a lovely girl from Hokkaido, and conversations have been had about our future children's football alliances. They usually go like this; 'what if he supports Chelsea?'. The conversation quickly ends with some sigh or disgusted 'urgh'. Boy or girl, they will be bombarded with everything Villa. Hopefully by the time that comes around we'll have a team to be proud of again!

I feel so proud of my 6 year old great nephew, he's at least the 5th generation of Villa supporters in my family and already well familiar with all things claret and blue.  He kept saying all last year he hoped we wouldn't go down, but he'd still support us if we did.  I saw him on Sunday and he was happily watching the England game in his Villa top.  As with everyone else in my family, not supporting Villa is not an option.

Two main memories v Forest:-

1. (Bad) Took my son who was aged about five to the 4-0 defeat in 1988. He asked to go home within 10 minutes but suffered with me until the end.
2. (Good) Home game in 1981. As I recall we were 2-0 up in the first half in bright sunshine. The scoreboard suddenly flashed up "Ipswich 0 Arsenal 2". We were back on course to be Champions.

It happened. He scored the winner against Forest at home and away in the 92-93 season. The away game was a Sunday. I was in the Trent End and it became apparent that loads of Villa were in there when McGrath's towering header hit the net.

One of my first games at Villa Park was to see the 1-1 draw in 1990. Franz Carr scored really late on, and I would have forgotten that name completely if he hadn't made amends all those years later. But I've always had a soft spot for Forest, probably because of that game. I went to the friendly in 2012, and it did seem for the first ten minutes of that match we had a new playing style that would finally see us turn a corner. And then it turned out we didn't and were in fact still quite shit.
